I think the most agreed upon opinion that Ive seen from Non-SJM stans and current SJM stan's is that she desperately needs a competent editor who's not afraid to tell it to her face that she needs to cut some content from her books.

So truuuue for HOSAB. I was okayish with the length of HOHAB (except maybe too much dead ends in the case) but HOSAB.... I just can't, it could have been cut in half really !

I agree and unfortunately I feel like that carries into book 2. The bonus scene in the B&N edition doesn't even feel bonus because it's not like we gained a bit of interesting knowledge, it was Bryvlce being Bryce for another... 20 pages?

@@rachelrudd603 Yes !! I'm at 88% now and I just can't wait to finish ... It also seemed really inconsistent with the first book sometimes and I am really pissed about it.

I'm really glad you read this because I wanted to know your thoughts! I'm also glad you enjoyed it. I *love* this book. It's my favourite of all of SJM's books (although I'm reading book 2 right now and that's just as good, if not better). I think it's really interesting how different people's opinions seem to be on this book. I never had a problem with how long this book is, possibly because I'm obsessed with Bryce and Hunt as characters and as a ship, so I never really felt like anything was superfluous or that the pacing was off. I also didn't have a problem with the world building (this is probably my favourite world of any series I've read) but I do see your point about the info dumping. I didn't think it was too bad but I can see why others might. I hope you enjoy book 2!

Hey Sam. It's nice that you're updating your thoughts on Tiktok. It will be nice if you could post them as Instagram reels too because some countries (like mine) don't have Tiktok anymore. So we could watch them too. And I'm definitely reading it after this review ❤

      @ThoughtsOnTomes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I’ll have to look into that! I know reels doesn’t like reposts from tiktok so I’d have to find a way to remove the tiktok watermark and I think to do that you have to pay for apps that will do that 😣

The vacuum scene. Could not stop laughing. One of my favorite things in a book ever. Hilarious and badass! Totally agree with you on the side characters. So much better than the mains.

I liked the ending of this but I can totally understand why people struggle in the beginning. I feel like a lot of the info dumping stuff is going to be relevant in later books but I’m not sure how much I’ll remember when that info does pop up again.

I fear she has gotten the dreaded no edit clause and if so, it’s terrible. I like SJM but not to the point I will just accept anything. This book was hard to get through. The last 200 pages were good but it was hard to get there. I just dnf’d the sequel. I was bored and just didn’t care. I heard the ending and I just can’t.

I've been so up and down about whether I want to read this. Sometimes I really want to jump into a big chunky fantasy, but hearing over and over about how this is longer than necessary really keeps me avoiding it. I think I'm just going to have to wait till it's done to see if I really want to commit to it.

    • @ThoughtsOnTomes

It’s longer that necessary but it still reads quickly

Every time people take about this book it makes me think of ‘Angel’s Blood’ by Nalini Singh which also involves the female character teaming up with an Angel male character to solve a thing. However that world is primarily angels and vampires. I love it is as a series and would definitely recommend you checking it out if you’re on the urban fantasy/ paranormal romance kick.

The broken sentences get me 😅 like we get it, everything is the biggest and most overstated, I don't need a handful of broken sentences each pages to tell me that.
And I agree, she has some amazing scenes! They just need to trim it down a bit with editing.

I really don't get how people see the whole "she's good at everything trope because I didn't see it. the girl was really messed up in the head after her friend died she couldn't bring herself to do much until she was forced to and as far as crime solving that was mostly hunt * whenever people said anything against danica Bryce refused to believe even when the evidence was right there. these are more like character flaws than anything..there'ss a lot that i can go on about but yeah didn't see it

I had a hard time connecting with characters in this one. I just didn’t feel that same pill to them that I have in her other books. So while the book was fine, I wasn’t blown away by it. I did enjoy the vacuum scene though. 😂

Bryce is a brat, she irritated me, but I think she was supposed too honestly. Love Ruhn, and you will love him even more in book two. Book Two is definitely better than this one (I did a spoiler free on my channel), but there is a LOT going on in the second book, still a big info dump, expansion of characters, introduction of some new ones.

"If her editor edited it at 500-600 pages"
I heard from a redditor once that they worked in a book publishing company and their coworkers said SJM didn't need her books to be edited because it would sell anyways...
