While I found the ending sad. This film is a happy directing ending for Isao's life. I honestly don't know much about him, but looking at the films he made, I bet he will be a legend for generations to come.
The tale of the princess kaguya is not only one of studio ghibli’s best films but also one of the most underrated films from them. The story is very interesting character study on Princess Kaguya. A simple coming of age story of a young woman, who came from a bamboo, with a lot of complex themes. One of themes of I like from this movie is sometimes the things we think need in life aren’t always the same as we wanted. We should do what makes feel happy. The bamboo cutter always believe that princess kaguya needed the best life someone like her could have, but as she becomes settled in the royal lifestyle, she becomes increasingly unhappy especially after some of her decisions ended up having consequences. Making her having second thoughts on her starting a life on earth. It’s definitely a lot for her which makes her a pretty complex character. The animation is not only beautiful but I even say innovative. It feels like an actual Japanese painting coming to life. And the other characters are giving amazing depth and charm to them. Also, I give credit to voice acting from the English dub. All the performances were amazing like James Cann, Lucy liu, Hayden walch, Mary steenburgen and more. But if I have to pick the best performance, it would hands down be Chloe grace moretz as the title character. She greatly captures her innocence, curiosity, and emotional struggles she goes throughout the film. It’s definitely different than what he does later when she voices Nimona. Isao Takahata has always created so many amazing films, like grave of the fireflies, Pom poko and only yesterday. But with this he really went out with a bang on his final feature. 9,5/10
Literally my FAVORITE Ghibli movie ever! I saw it for the first time last year & was floored how much I adored it & not just for its artistry! Probably one of my top 3 fave films as well & given I adore a majority of Ghibli’s works, that is impressive! RIP Isao Takahata 🙏🌸
i used to watch this film when i was 11 when i was during my traumatic period in 2016 and the ending has already stayed with me since, when i watched a nostalgia critic video where doug mentioned this movie, my head suddenly clicked back and remembered that scene. i rewatched the scene but didn't feel anything but as i brought a dvd of the tale of princess kaguya, i watched and my god......when i saw the ending again but in full, my heart died as soon as i saw kaguya tearfully running back to hug her family goodbye as she'll never see nor remember them ever again. this film will forever make my heart hurt, arigato takahata-san, i love you💔
I think we can all agree this film would’ve been a better pick to win Best Animated Feature in 2015 over Big Hero 6 and would’ve made Isao Takahata’s high point before his death even more sweeter. But I guess THAT WAS THE ACADEMY’S MISTAKE!
I know right? As much as I loved and enjoyed Big Hero 6 now, I do find it a dick movie to give the Oscar for Best Animated Feature to Big Hero 6 instead of the Tale of Princess Kayuga 👸🏻 to pay respect 🙏🏻 to Isao Takahata. Also I wanted How to Train Your Dragon 🐲🐉 2 to win 🏆 the Oscar for Animated Feature since it won a Gloden Globe 🌎 and it was close but the Academy gave it to Big Hero 6?! Don't get me wrong, but Disney already won an Oscar for Frozen and they didn't need an another Oscar. The HTTYD trilogy never got a chance to win 🏆 an Oscar for Best Animated Feature despite critical praise, box office success and winning awards. That is the only part that makes Big Hero 6 overrated for winning an Oscar 🏆. At least Studio Ghibli won 🏆 an Oscar for Best Animated Feature this year with the Boy and the Heron.
@hunterolaughlin Also another animated film that didn't need an Oscar to win was Brave back in 2013. I thought Wreck It Ralph was going to win 🏆 but nope they gave to Brave. I don't understand. Brave is a pretty good film but it suffers from unoriginal story and flawed characters.
First Your Name, then The Triplets of Belleville, then The Secret of Nimh and now The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. The Animation Hat has been especially kind to Animat this year. Now I didn't know what the next review is going to be from his hint alone, but the comments say that it's going to be Christmas in New York. And considering it's from the studio that made the animated Titanic movies, yeah I'll buy that there's going to be some craziness here.
Oh boy! "Christmas in New York" is next! Alright, AniMat. Please keep your hands, arms, legs and feet inside the ride at all times. Secure all loose articles, including wallets, change, sunglasses, cell phones, and hats. Remain seated until it comes to a complete stop and you are instructed to exit. And as for the lap bars, *HOLD ON TIGHT, and LET'S FREAKIN' GO!!!*
An animated adaptation of an old Japanese folklore. Count me in!! It’s probably going to be a beautiful looking film when I’m going to have my experience with it. The animation style they’re going for is fantastic. Also, we’ll never forget James Caan since he’s a legendary actor. Mondo…. Oh no! We’re going to review Christmas in New York isn’t it? The same people behind legend of titanic
❤️💖 Even Kubo and the Two Strings did justice ⚖️, respect, love ❤️ and recognition 👏🏻 in Japanese culture 👏🏻 as much as Studio Ghibli movies. 🇯🇵 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤️
Back in 2014, I couldn’t even tell you how excited I was for this film, not only because it’s from Studio Ghibli & Isao Takahata, but I also loved the original Japanese folktale! (Which I first discovered through an episode of Hello Kitty’s Animation Theater!😺🎀) And although Sailor Moon S The Movie/Princess Kaguya’s Lover will still be my personal favorite adaptation🌙❄. I would definitely put The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya among my top 10 Studio Ghibli films! It stays true to the source material while providing strong character development, a powerful message of finding happiness & wonder in the small things in life, and fantastic voice acting both in Japanese & English. But hands down, the shining star of the film is the animation!🖌 From the beautiful watercolor backgrounds to the brushstroke style, it showcases some of the studio’s best work like when Princess Kaguya runs away from the mansion or dances underneath the cherry blossom trees! So, I’ll also give Isao Takahata’s swan song a 9/10!🌸 Okay, now let's end the 2024 Classic Reviews on a high note as well!🤩 A CHRISTMAS SPECIAL BY THE SAME STUDIO WHO MADE THOSE ANIMATED TITANIC MOVIES?!?! NOOOOOOOOO!!!😭
In my opinion, Princess Kaguya is one of, if not, the greatest animated film from Studio Ghibli. Yes, I think it’s even better than Spirited Away. Sure it is somewhat sad, but it does have such a hopeful message with truly beautiful animation and complex characters to make this a fitting finale for Isao Takahata. I might check it out when it comes out in theaters later this month as part of this year’s Ghibli Fest, although that will depend if I will because of a few big movies coming out that weekend. Also, who the heck on Patreon thought it was a good to request Animat to review an AWFUL Christmas movie this year instead of a great one like Klaus?!
I'm looking forward to catching a Fathom Event of Isao Takahata's directorial work on November 25th! But, if he, along with color designer Michiyo Yasuda, hadn't convinced Hayao Miyazaki to make another movie, we wouldn't have his next Oscar-winning “The Boy and the Heron”. Also, it's bittersweet that the end credits song was sung at his funeral. God bless Paku-san's spirit. Also, while a sad choice, I hope AniMat covers "Grave of the Fireflies".
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya was a very great movie, but it is also so sad it became Isao Takahata's final film. After Kaguya I really wanted him to do a feature film of Momotarō the Peach Boy which was also hinted along with Kaguya in My Neighbors the Yamadas.
Speaking of Isao Takahata, has anyone ever heard of his first film, Taiyou no Ouji: Horus no Daibouken? Which was a film that he and Miyazaki made at Toei Animation back in 1968. It’s been a while since I’ve seen, but it was cool from what I remember.
The ending theme in this movie, I cried. Inochi no Kioku, or When I Remember This Life, was so deep and meaningful. This was the song that was played in Takahata's funeral, so it is a fitting song for a departure of another Ghibli legend.
The film's visuals is like a modern update to the Disney Xerox era films between 1961 to 77, that's why the characters show more rough lines which works to capturing an ancient setting.
It is worth noting that the inspiration for the visuals of the film came from Frédéric Back, a Canadian artist and film director in Quebec, whose works, Crac! and The Man Who Planted Trees, gave such an impact to Takahata. When I first saw that film, I became immersed with it. So much so, that I became very fond of Little Bamboo (yes that is her real name, not Kaguya).
I know Takahata can be a difficult director at Studio Ghibli and ends up causing more trouble/ friction for the animators, which is why there should be a unionized system for all Japanese studios no different what's occurring in the U.S. But either way, Princess Kaguya will probably be the last Ghibli film that's like a throwback to the director's early days as series director. In short, Takahata will be remembered as an experimental figure and a complicated individual just to extend 2 hours in a feature film.
If you're interested, the next movie for AniMat's Classic Reviews is available to watch on TH-cam at th-cam.com/video/9uncFROQJAY/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUbY2hyaXN0bWFzIGluIG5ldyB5b3JrIG1vbmRv.
This movie is absolutely beautiful. I love the ancient Japan folklore story, and I love the animations more beautiful than the other Ghibli movies and the English voice after did amazing and I can’t believe you’re ending the year off with weird holiday a Adam Sandler animated movie eight crazy night
I think what he's actually going to end off the year with is the infamous "Christmas in New York", from Mondo TV, the same studio that brought us the animated Titanic movies and series (that means a lot of craziness, and animation by North Koreans. Yep! NORTH Korea has an animation studio, SEK Studio (though they actually call it the Korean April 26th Animation Studio)).
Hope you enjoyed your break cause when you come back after next week oh boy your podcast is gonna get chills with the Mufasa Lion King last trailer and Ice Age 6 with the original cast returning and being released in theaters in 2026
Ice Age 6 is happening and the original cast is returning and it’s going to be released in theaters instead of on Disney+?! “Oh man……” - Alex the Lion (Madagascar)
@hunterolaughlin thank and since it gonna be coming out the same year as Shrek 5, Toy Story 5, And Super Mario Bros Movie 2 it is Doom to failed rather they released it in the Spring or summer maybe the fall or winter it would do fine

if this was Takahatas final film then I would hate to see what Miyazaki's looks like if the stubborn bastard ever actually retires or dies heaven forbid
Christmas in New York. It is a 2005 animated movie directed by Orlando Corradi, who also directed The Legend of the Titanic and In Search of the Titanic. That's already a red flag right there.
I’d rather have Mickey’s upon a Christmas duology in a vlog-style review just like two years ago with DOAWK: Rodrick Rules and NATM: Kahmunrah Rises Again than something that SaberSpark would review.
I wouldn't be sure it would be that big of a rant. Though it would be a bit like you're trapped in a tornado. In which case, go to the lowest floor in a sturdy building, preferably in the center and with no windows.
December 5 and 6 will be the reviews of Moana 2 and That Christmas, December 20 will be the review of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, and December 26 and 27 will be the reviews of Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
17:33 - 17:48 REST IN PEACE James Caan. WE MISSED YOU. 🙏🏻 🪦

Darn it, and I was hoping Animat would go and review The Polar Express, because this movie is celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year.
@moritztsacher That WOULD be cool.
Ice Age is back, Mr. Animat!
Blue Sky is back!
My personal favorite Ghibli film ❤

Not to be confused with Kaguya-sama. Love isn't war in this movie, instead it's award worthy in a different way.

When Are You gonna Review "The Tale Of Despereaux"?
I don’t know if you’ll see this but could you review the Shudder original Mad God?
if this was Takahatas final film then I would hate to see what Miyazaki's looks like if the stubborn bastard ever actually retires or dies heaven forbid
Who else is excited for Arcane Season 2 tomorrow? 😃
Wait is Mat gonna talk about Happy Tree Friends? Cause MondoMedia is exactly what I'm thinking about.
It’s mondo as in Mondo tv as in titanic
@supereddieman397 Oh, OOOHHHH I see now the same company that gave us the Puppy face Octopus himself.
What’s the next movie review
Christmas in New York. It is a 2005 animated movie directed by Orlando Corradi, who also directed The Legend of the Titanic and In Search of the Titanic. That's already a red flag right there.
@@andrewharkin9774 After that is the loud house movie.
@@JonathanAhnberg-fc6gsHow do you know?
OMG CHRISTMAS IN NEW YORK IS THE NEXT ANIAMT REVIEW CANT WAIT TO SEE ANIMAT BIGGEST RANT EVER WHEN HE GIVE THE ANIMAT SEAL OF GARBAGE.😃😃😄🎄

When is the next classic review?
I'm gonna predict the next classic review will be on December 13th.
Never mind, the next AniMat's Classic Review will come out either on December 19 or 20 since there will be an AniMat Watches video this week.
