My HVAC guy came Fri. because my heat pump wasn't working. Bad news, system totally dry of coolant R-22, and compressor had dumped some oil. It's a 3.5 ton unit 13 yrs. old. He recommended new system. I'm not too thrilled but I guess it has to be done. We've got emergency heat (split system) and gas log fireplace (LP) I want to make sure I have a good system before summer heat sets in.
Looked this up. Have a service call to go to tomorrow on 4 ton Ruud package heat pump most likely same issue from the description of the problem from my customer. Good video. Unit is only 1-1/2 years young. Crazy!
I always work alone I've tried to train a few guys and half don't care what kind of work they produce they won't get simple helper tools or they just plain won't work think they can keep a phone in one hand and work with the other so I've got my van set up where I can do anything by myself I can move package units by myself I can put furnace or airhandler in the attic or crawl space by myself my son used to help me but someone killed him in 2019
@@donaldpainter956 i am so sorry to hear that ,god bless his soul. I know exactly what you mean, i have to be on almost every job, (plumbing, electrical,....) because they leave a mess and i have to take the call from tenant so i go meet them at the site and once they are done and i don't see any issues i pay them. I hope you stay safe and again god bless his soul 🙏🙏🙏
Saturday calls bring out max speed in a technician during nice weather. I found a bad heat exchanger today and your short sleeving on a.c.unit. Enjoy nice weather. Hope ribs are doing better.
I really like the way your present your diagnoses and fixing HVAC systems. You are so informative. Also just wanted to say take care of your health for yourself and family along with your clients too.
Few months ago I yanked out an indoor motor on an air handler!!! Same type … ECM!?!?! I installed a regular PSC motor! And put a relay in to work with the fan control board! I asked (the supply house) the difference in ECM vs PSC…. He said lower locked rotor amperage! So I asked what’s the difference if you run a PSC motor on continuous fan (run load amps are about the same!!!)🤔🤷🏽 So I’d really like to see the difference in a power bill when both are ran nonstop! I personally jus think it’s another high dollar addiction to what could be a more standard reliable operating system! With a satisfied customer & a service tech going where he’s really needed! “Keep it simple!” QUIT THINNING EVAPORATOR COILS FOR MORE EFFICIENCY TOO!!! More refrig leaks on da way in da process 🙅🏼🙅🏻♂️🙅🏽♀️
I see what you're saying about the ECM but you can't run an indoor fan constantly. During cooling season you'll reintroduce the moisture on the indoor coil back into the living space and there will be an issue. It'll also feel like they're living in a cave, cold and wet. The blower must turn off after a call for cooling unless there's auxiliary dehumidification.
You are correct static pressure my foot in carrier folks in ga exscuse I've had 2 blower motor on one dual fuel gaspack go bad in 7 yrs glad I registered it for the 10 yr warranty
Right now we're seeing a wave ecm fan motors fail on 16 seers rheems all within 5yrs old. It's pretty upsetting, we've already had 8 warranties in the last 3 months. They're claiming is water related, but it's not just rheem, it's across the board. Also had our first compressor fail on a unit less than a yr old, (the new model).
On the condenser ECM motors, I assume they still do the 15 second run in each direction to determine proper rotation? Once they do the initial rotation procedure, is there any way to make them redo the initialize procedure?
Depending on the make of the motor. An OEM motor is programmed. The Evergreen motors self learn rotation at first startup but I'm unsure about the speed programming.
I've never seen an outdoor fan motor save any energy by being ECM. I mean, they always pull .8 amp current for me. Unless I'm interpreting that wrong....
Recently bought my house. I noticed that my Rheem AC unit's outside fan will spin for 15 seconds and then shut off for 2 mins. It'll turn on again for 15 seconds and then shut off. Rinse and repeat over and over. Called a buddy of mine. He does some HVAC work. He says my unit has an ECM. He doesn't know to much about them. It appears to be similar to what's going on in this video. His buddy says that it's normal. I don't feel like it is. When it was 90 degrees here, my house was blowing hot air until night fell. Then the house started to cool down. So long story short, should the fan always be spinning when the AC is turned on? Thank you!
They are often found in AC units and heatpumps with variable speed compressors in them but they are of higher grade materials since AC units with variable speed compressors are made to last longer than single stage units.
Love the content, which Veto bag is that? & does that SC680 fit in it? I need to retire my current bag but, I loaf around that 680, just want it to fit. X13, you lose any benefits from cost saving measures of that motor the first time it breaks out of warranty.
I work on rheem/ruud and it's not as uncommon to have their ecm condenser fan motors that will thermally trip over and over. It's a clear symptom they are bad.
If you have plenty of business or work on the appointment books, it makes zero sense to rush any job or be in a hurry. And if you are not all that busy, why rush?
Have you ever run into a situation where an ECM fan motor would not run if the line voltage was slightly high? By that I mean 242 to 243 VAC. Do you have a video on swapping an ECM fan motor to a PSC motor?
Psc motor is simple. Wire it up to a capacitor and l1 and l2 on contactor. When contactor pulls in it will cut on. Just don't do that on a heat pump cause then it won't turn off in defrost
Rheem a/c units are garbage. Too expensive to repair. I have that same unit. After 2.5 years air handler ecm motor quit. $800 just for labor. Motor is under warranty. Imagine if both Motors were ecm 😳🤔 The other motor has a capacitor.
You can't blame it on static pressure, you can't blame it on humidity getting into the motor..... I love it brother! Those are my sentiments exactly.

Got yourself a workout there, Good job Curtis, I can tell your ribs getting better, you went at that motor at full steam.
Just came across one of these yesterday. So glad you had made this video. Great advice thanks for the help man
Good little fan motor changeout vid ... Thx ...
Great troubleshooting and change out on this fan motor 👌

Inside the round controller there is an $8 thermistor that limits inrush current. That is the likely failure mode.
How do you test the thermistor and is there different sizes if so how are they rated ?
Part is under warranty. Wouldn't be worth trying to repair a bad part.

Tidy work 👍🏻
There is a part in the module that causes that problem it is the choke
Thermistor...a $2 part.

Thx, just a thought a Folding table makes working easier 😊
Those motors suck but they help me pay the bills. Thanks
what do you think about surge protectors ?
If it has a VFD compressor They should be part of the install.
Those should be built into components since the industry is fully aware that power is never perfect.
Mine in three years old (manufactured 2019) and did the same thing
If you are having trouble separating the fan blades from the motor could u tap on the shaft of the old motor with a mallet to dislodge it?
No, that risks mushrooming the shaft and you won't be able to remove the blade without a lot more effort.

Whats the name of the last part installed ? Is that the module?
I can't get the bolt off from the fan shaft.
I put WD40 on over night but it won't budge.
Can you have a 50/5 Capacitor and install a condenser fan that says CAP10? Will it still work properly?
Would you do a video on Rheem heat pump 2 ton condenser fan doesn't turn off and how to fix it.
Please share how many years youve been doing this and where you got your training and education.
I'm just curious. What do you do with all your bad parts? Where do you throw them away at?
The metal I sell for scrap. I collect it and sell it in bulk to guys that break it down and sell it.
I've never seen an outdoor fan motor save any energy by being ECM. I mean, they always pull .8 amp current for me. Unless I'm interpreting that wrong....
They have a higher power factor. They do use less energy but not a whole lot less.
@@douro20 yeah like what, .8 vs .97? Which saves on costs if you are a big commercial customer.

You should've explained what everything was like that round can that you replace inside the unit. Is that à control box for the fan motor?
it’s a module. but, yes it controls the motor

Tech MCT, and yes the 680 fits
Always take the panel off, always do amps, always do pressure, subcooling, always calculate uF while running
Same issue.. my module..I think...😁
👍
Mine ECU has went out for the third time. Still under warranty until Sept 2027.
I work on rheem/ruud and it's not as uncommon to have their ecm condenser fan motors that will thermally trip over and over. It's a clear symptom they are bad.
Is the typical for a Rheem unit to have the fan motor fail after 3 years?
Don't matter rheem or other those motors give problems like he said if out of warranty go to psc motor
Should fan motor be replaced when vibrating excessfully.
Not your design, but what a wonderful place to tie any and all excess wires???
Good video tho
I’ve noticed in your last few videos you seem very rushed are you that swamped seems like you need to slow down just a bit
Sometimes. Early in this video I was rushed because I didn’t want that compressor to overheat.
If you have plenty of business or work on the appointment books, it makes zero sense to rush any job or be in a hurry. And if you are not all that busy, why rush?

40° F here and you are doing no cooling.
We get about 4 weeks of winter, and even then we run the AC during most of those days.
