I've literally diagnosed three bad ecm motors this past week! All three of the customers said they were running their furnaces on a generator (generac). Another great video, Craig! I appreciate what you do for this community!
@OhHenrysMusic The inrush surge of the generator smoked the motor modules I'd bet. Upsell a surge protector any time a circuit board, variable speed, or ECM blower gets fried during power outages. This will protect their investment from future outage damage. P.S. thank you for your service.
Six years ago my Rheem air handler ecm fan motor stopped working. I determined the ecm fan module went bad - I assume it was from a voltage surge from a storm around that time. I was able to locate and purchase a new GE gentec module on eBay for $250 (the dealer flashed/programmed the replacement module for my specific system application). I did not purchase a new complete GE gentec ecm motor assy as at that time it was $700. The air handler fan motor w/the replacement fan control module is still working fine to this day. Properly diagnosing the module as the issue for fan not working was very difficult as all I had to go on was the wiring diagrams located on the air handler. At that time I didn't even know that an ecm fan assy that uses DC power to operate the fan motor was a thing. Had I had this video back then as an explanation of system operation it'd of saved me several hours of troubleshooting. Back then I couldn't find any info online on how the ecm fan motors worked or their elec/system diagnosis procedures.
Easy way to diagnose one vs the other. This may be somewhat out of date for newer ecm stuff. Try to turn the motor. If it feels stuck, unplug the module. If it turns freely, it's a bad module. If it still feels rough, replace all.
As always I like your videos every day I work as residential PM technician and these videos are great resource to refresh my knowledge. Again as always your one the top technician and teacher…
My education was from your home state where I graduated from Middlesex County College in 1985 with an ASET Degree And DeVry University in Woodbridge, NJ with a Digital Electronics Certification. Professor Lee was my Digital Professor at DeVry! Thank you very much!
Excellent video, I recommend your videos to any of my friends who are interested in learning controls. It amazes me how how thorough your training is. I have gone to training that cost money that were not as good as your videos.
I know you have the heart of a teacher, but you should CHARGE for all this knowledge. Case in point... you saved my son at least $300 plus in labor. He calls me up... 8 year old Bryant heat pump. Blower with an X13 would run all the time. Using one of your videos... I pulled the thermostat and it still ran. Checked G to C no voltage. Pulled the fan speed wires on the X13... still ran. Bad module. Replaced it with the Rescue Ez13 because it had both pigtails. All is well. i charged him a 12 pack of beer. 😁
There is a lot of good information here, and it's free. But in all of his videos he jumps around quite a bit and they can be hard to follow. Little things like is this 24 volt ac or dc? He will just say 24 volt and assume that you know. But, I shouldn't complain because it's free but I'm complaining a little bit anyway.
I’m all for free stuff lol but I just finished hvac school and got my epa universal and they were using allot of your videos in our class for us .. definitely should be getting some type of compensation from these vids!! But I appreciate you, you were a big help 🙌
No older techs are trying to retire well not necessarily retire fully but they’re getting old and want to spread there knowledge to the upcoming/future techs. It’s not a high enough demand for the this trade.
Thanks again for all the content, editing,nd post s you create for us guys in the field . You are sooo correct the price of just the module is nuts , better to buy the whole assembly
Amazing! I use fan for just fan. I use cooling with automatic, so indoor blower motor comes on according to the temperature and compressor and outside fan motor come on also!
Thank you Craig, my question is if thermostat power up the G terminal when there is a call for heat, what speed fan would run and same question if there is a call for cool
I am an electrician, but I took a furnace and gas unit heater course before. The gas unit heater fan was broken. I replaced it. The fan continues running without heat. Thermostat temperature is high about 25 C. Heat is not working. Is the ECM blower motor fault? Can you tell me about it?

I loved the Video and explanation! Question: I have 5 York units and I have Unit #2 switches from Cooling to fan only right after 5 minutes of running. Do you think that has to do with the module Program failure? Thanks
Have a EMC motor and a IFC furnace, replaced my emc motor with same emc motor specs it with a refurbished one! When we connected it just turns on continuously, disconnected thermostat wires, stays on. When we turn heat or ac goes thru process and turns on. If I turn fan on it stays running but at lower speed, when I shut fan off it stays running but faster speed. Thoughts
I was struggling to understand how te controls work. Then I did a plc training (aka siemens logo programming 😅) and now I understand all electronic boards are basically logos without the coverage, with the difference that they are already programmed
my replacement motor won't switch off, actually with the minimum fan speed potentiometer dialed all the way back it stops but can still hear a buzz from the motor.. it's a breezair variable speed motor with just 4 pins though
If it’s an air handler here in the Pacific Northwest then you might see 256 volts at the blower in one neighborhood and 207 volts at a residential home a couple of blocks away… Ya our power grid is screwed up here
Like craig Said. Fails at the Module. not the motor I know This for sure. Because I've Fixed.six ECM motor instead of replacing the module or the motor itself. On the high voltage side of the module There is a component on the board that is called a rush current limiter. This component, after a period of a few years blows a leg off the board. Due to heating of the component. $3 part from Melzer electronics out a Texas and you're up and running again. The latest one that I Fixed. Was Six years old and The rush current limiter blow a leg off the one side of the Component.. replaced with new one And still going 4 years now.
I found this exact board and motor to be problematic. At least for me I’m constantly replacing either or in some cases both because of the blower taps not energizing or the motor not kicking on when being energized by the taps. Anyone else having this issue?

Do they have surge protectors on the furnaces?
I'd bet they do not.
@@YTsux24-7 Probably not.. There was a big power outage where I work and it messed up a lot of people's furnaces.

Is their genset certified to produce clean power ? older gen sets cant meet modern electronics HD requirements .

Good job
You know it’s going be a great day when you have a new video and a cup of coffee for breakfast.
I always follow you, your videos are better than school and work place
of course school wont teach you everything but i was fortunate enough to have good teachers. I learned the basics

He surely gets paid via TH-cam?
He does! Have you not seen his books?

Great video, well explained, good camera quality and clear voice. Thanks always Craig, you teach and explain great.
This was perfect explanation and visual for new techs. Wish all videos was like that.

What would you do if you lost the programming on the red wire?
Fantastic go video. As a Instructor, you always give me great ideas
Glad to help
Great video Craig. I bought your book on Mini-Splits. It’s been a huge help to me. Thanks for the knowledge
Thank you for getting my book! I'm so glad you like them!
Like always, thank you for sharing the knowledge. All your videos are always so helpful!
My pleasure!
Thanks for the video. Could you explain how we could substitute an ecm motor for one with a capacitor? Thank you in advance
You mentioned DC relays on the IFC board but measuring AC output from the motor speed taps. What part of the relay is DC?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have a question, maybe a silly question. Does the board has a relay to turn on the gas valve?
Thank you Craig, my question is if thermostat power up the G terminal when there is a call for heat, what speed fan would run and same question if there is a call for cool
Can you recommend a good surge protector for the type of ECM blower motor troubleshooted in this video?

Hi so about the fonction of test in this board how it works or runs ?
Thank you for All
When troubleshooting an ecm motor I like to also use the supco ecm tester as insurance.
Can you detail that with the motor in this video
Another banger. 🤘⚡️🤘✨✨✨
I loved the Video and explanation!

what if you jump R and G and don't get 24v threw common and fan and no blinking error codes at all. Does that means I have to replace the board?
I was struggling to understand how te controls work. Then I did a plc training (aka siemens logo programming 😅) and now I understand all electronic boards are basically logos without the coverage, with the difference that they are already programmed
Great video. Very helpful
Excelent. Enjoying your books
Thank you for picking up our book!

Awesome video 🙏 thank you so much 👍

This ecm motor/module easily breaks as compared to older systems psc system..
I see r and c connect not g
So confused
Ecm motors are junk. Especially the new high flow.
