Hi Tyler, thanks for the video. I'm in the middle of doing the same thing times about 10. I bought a used hoist that needed to be rebuilt and a used mill that needs some work. I also bought the raw steel to build the gantry. The hoist is almost finished, the gantry is yet to be welded and the mill is being broke down now at the previous owner's house for the move. I spent 100 on the hoist + about 80 on the restoration, 200 for the steel and 450 for the mill. We'll see how much the mill ends up!
Tyler- Outstanding video! Congrats on the new Mill! As for justification on buying a chain hoist... Their are some tools that are too cool not to own. I have tools that I could never justify to a sane person but that's why we work metal. It's impossible to explain to a lay-person why we need a particular tool but you are among friends here and there's no need to elaborate. Chain Hoist, Arbor Press, Tapping Stand, Cold Saw, Sheet metal brake... Got to have them!!! ;)
Yep, they sell an gantry crane too. The shop crane maxes out at about 7', so it might be slightly shorter than the eylet in my ceiling - but I think my ceiling is only 7'6" so it should still provide enough height.
Funny, you don't look anything like I had imagined you. Great video! Please keep them coming. Do you have any intention of turning it into a CNC mill? Would you recommend against putting casters on the base? Are there even places to attach them to the base?
I just started uploading videos of my projects. I have one of the hoist when I first got it home if you want to see it. As soon as the weather clears up down here I'll be adding the last coats of paint. I've watched all the moving videos I could before I came up with this plan, hopefully it works out ok, I'm just a little worried...
Yeah, I only have 7 videos up so far. Hoist part 1 shows it as purchased. I'll be uploading a video soon showing the inner workings of the gear reduction. Ever heard of a gyrating yoke? Very interesting!
I'd love it if you document the process on a larger mill. If you video the process I'd be happy to upload it to my youtube channel if you don't have a channel of your own to upload it to. I like watching videos of moving large equipment. It helps make the process a little less spooky.
Have you done a belt drive conversion. If not, how have the plastic gears held up. I'm shopping for a bigger mill. I currently use an X2 sized mill. I'm looking at either the G0619 or the G0704 as my next mill.
For those that do not have a attach point for a engine hoist, the Harbor Freight 1 or 2 ton folding shop crane is a nice investment. I bought the 2 ton for the extra height. #60051 (2 ton) #69512 (1 1\2 ton)
Lemme guess, I'm thinner, younger, and better looking? If so, thanks! Eventually I'd like to CNC the mill. As for casters, I say "casters" in the video and I mean the leveling pads, not casters in the sense of wheels. With proper thick rubber pads I think the machine would be pretty stable. But bolting it to the floor is still the best bet. Some people even secure the column to the wall to prevent vibration during use.
Just stumbled on this channel, so much good information here, sad it seems to have been abandoned for a decade :(

Tyler, I remember when you started making these videos! Hope you are doing well.

those are great little mills and do some good work you just cant push em but they will work for you and do accurate work. Is it setup for R8 tooling?
I, 80 and my wife 77 manhandled it from vehicle to work shop but separated it at stand. Not too bad.
“As always, thanks’ for taking the time to make this video! And I support this site.” ~M~
Yea, I'd like to see it. Is it on your channel?

I've just bought a lathe just like this! Thanks Man!
Agreed! Well said. Thanks for the kind words.
Do you have any video (or tips) for radius cutter (in particular concave radius 1 inch/25,4mm)?
Yep, R8 spindle. It comes will a chuck, but not collets.
You in WA? I heard another video you mention port angeles. I'm down in eatonville.

With proper precautions, you can lift using a robust scale scissor.
Thanks Nelson!
I don't think I've ever seen someone standing next to one on the stand. Damn! That is short!
Another method is to dismantle the mill into smaller pieces. :)
Lemme guess, I'm thinner, younger, and better looking? If so, thanks!

Roger that.
Don't walk it. Get wheels from Shopfox. Then you can roll it.
