Excellent video Rob, I think that today Oura Ring doesn't offer something new that doesn't do the rest other than being a ring and not a watch, I don't know if it's worth those 300 + subscription. Today everyone has nocturnal hrv, sleep and respiratory rate. It would be interesting if you could test the Apple watch applications for sleep and a new one like Athytic

Really good analysis. So glad I chose not to upgrade my Oura Ring 2.
It's unfortunate that releasing the 3 was really a move to generate cash, and not because there was any improvement to their technology.

    • @TheQuantifiedScientist
      @TheQuantifiedScientist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Hi Joshua! Well, it could still happen. Also, I think the improved sleep stage algorithm could also work on the Oura Ring 2, though I think they will not upgrade that one. They did improve the sensors to improve temperature, and add workout heart rate and SpO2, though they have so far needed many month to provide these updates... I indeed think they were overly optimistic on timelines, but lets hope they release these soon and that they work well 😊😄

@@TheQuantifiedScientist yes good points! How much do you find devices can improve with software/algorithm changes? I kinda feel like it depends much more on the hardware technology itself, and software improvements are usually small or to resolve bugs.
I guess we'll need another update in a little while!

    • @Kuk0san
      @Kuk0san 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It is certainly a bit aggravating that people now have to factor in a subscription fee, or people like me had to rush into upgrading to the next gen before having had enough usage of gen 2, for a product with barely any improvement.
But I try to remain hopeful that this cash flow is part of a strategy to show investors that the product still has potential, and will help Oura keep the lights on and crack on with improvements. But then again, I could be saying it because I am now personally invested into the product and wish to see a return on that. Either way, it's a new-ish form of technology so it is to be expected that it is a risky investment.

Went for a ski trip a few weeks back and the oura ring was quite good in noticing my body becoming exhausted.
Subjectively I was starting to feel it gradually as well. But the morning then oura ring said to rest, I was originally planning on going but decided against over caffeinating and going and just resting and it was the good choice.
Athlytic with the apple watch was still reporting stuff that was a bit more random at that point.
So I like the ring as an unobtrusive tracker that I also like as an accessory. Means I don't have to take any others with me.

I am totally agreed with your assessment. I am wearing Oura ring 2 then 3 for many years now. The recommendation the ring gives me has been very helpful and my sleep has improved a lot. The readiness scores were very accurate to how I felt when I jog. Oura ring look at the data on that day plus the trend lead to that day to give the scores, I think that might be the big difference compared to Rob data only looking at specific data of the day.

As feedback, I'd be really interested to see a plot of devices how well devices detected awake time vs sleep time combining (deep, light and rem together). I've accepted that actual sleep stage tracking is not very good for these devices and I'm only really interested in tracking how many hours I was asleep accurately, and I'm curious which device is the best for that.

Hi Shervin! Yep, Whoop still beats Oura's ass when it comes to sleep stage tracking at the moment. Yet another excellent, comprehensive review. I’ve worn WHOOP for over two years and have now been wearing Oura Ring 3 for about 4 months. In my experience, WHOOP is far superior at sleep staging. Oura is particularly bad at detecting SWS & REM. Here’s to hoping that the updated sleep staging algorithm is vastly improved, but I’m skeptical it’s as good as Oura claims in that one peer-reviewed journal article.

    Hi Rob!
I love your channel almost absolutely!!
There is one little thing I started to question in your reviews.
From what I understand you aren't analyzing the most useful data for sleep.
As a productivity maniac I am interested in better sleep. In this context better sleep is more deep sleep.
Especially the amount of deep sleep is the most important metric for me (and the rest of biohackers).
So when you analyze if the deep sleep was detected it's only a small part of the story.
For me, much more important information is how accurate was the amount of detected deep sleep.
It actually doesn't matter if the deep sleep was detected mistakenly in incorrect moments IF the sum amount of the deep sleep was counted correctly:
-> the amount of deep sleep on the test device is 95% the same as on the model device).
Do you think you could address this challenge in some way?
Maybe you could publish the raw sleep data from your tests and I could help calculate the accuracy for this specific and (in my opinion) the most important metric.
    I appreciate your work!

Awesome interview, would love to see more of this between those of you in the wearable space, and I have so many questions for all of you, including the quantified scientist.
For instance, does he see an overlap in his field of study and wearables? If so does he plan to pursue them? I’d imagine somewhere buried in the data there’s useful information when it comes to epigenetic‘s.
Three people come to mind when I think about the work you guys are doing, Daniel Kraft, Eric Topol, and Berci Mesko. These guys bring the health and medical side to the wearables discussion.
Lastly, we’ve all had our “I wish my watch did this” moments. What features or upgrades do you wish Garmin or Apple (or other) would add today, something you know is technologically easy to add but for whatever reason doesn’t exist?
I’ve been begging for a multi-activity feature for years, I’ll buy whatever brand delivers it. The common term is”WOD”, a mix of as many activities as you like. The activity names should transfer too so that box jumps transfer to Garmin Connect and Strava as box jumps and not revert to the generic “cardio” name. Ideally we can save these WOD’s and share them so others can download them. The possibilities are endless and so many people are Crosstraining, doing CrossFit, Hyrox training and competition, Spartan obstacle course racing, DekaFit competitions etc.
Okay I can go on forever, thanks for the interview and keep it up!

I mean you are seriously promoting it in this video and yet I think it's worse than it ever was. They didn't even really change the way they perceive it I mean measure it. It just seems like they used a formula to change the math based on the HRV score. People with higher HRV scores are getting instantly more sleep and deep sleep but people that have lower HRV scores including those who are older who have normal HRV scores for their age are immediately seeing huge deficits in sleep and deep sleep. That's just total BS. They're also admitting that their former algorithm was completely wrong. And that they were basically ripping people off for the last several years if we believe that their new algorithm is true. This is why it's oh so very important for you to do another review where you test this new algorithm against other devices and your other equipment that you so well used to do so. We're really counting on you sir!

Hi Rob. I’ve been watching your videos for a while, and follow your analysis with interest. The only thing holding back my decision, not just the algorithm update, is the battery longevity. How long will the battery in the ring last before it just stops holding a charge? $300 + subscription is a lot for something that may last 18-24 months maybe?
What’s your opinion on the oura ring’s shall life? Thanks 🙏

Trustworthy videos. If you could suggest any budget band with high accuracy of steps and heart rate, sleep tracking is not important. Thank you. 👏

I noticed that about a month ago my REM sleep time increased significantly and has more or less stayed higher. I have been wearing an Oura ring for 3 years now and the increase REM amount was definitely a noticeable change. I was wondering if they tweaked the sleep algorithm a little bit.

Can you do an analysis of the 'sleep as android' app? It does an estimation based on movement so probably not accurate. However you can also couple it with a HR monitor during your sleep and maybe then the accuracy is decent.

Oura has a new CEO as far as I know. Could be the reason for the sudden change. Hopefully this doesn't become a new pattern. That said I have had two rings with battery issues, gotten two new rings for free with upgrades include.

I have a question - have you since reworked the data analysis for the sleep tracking on the garmin venu 2? Because as far as I can tell, the dot in your comparison chart doesn't match any of the data given in your review of the device, and I know you changed EEG device around that time. Just, yanno, what is the method for generating the comparison chart here?

Hi Rob. Thanks for the video. Do you know if the oura ring released the promised features yet?
I am quite excited and looking forward to a nice device with which I can track my hrv, but also o2 levels in my blood. The oura ring appeals to me, but I also feel kind of lost as to which I should go for an alternative device. Some much choice. Which would you recommend?

Regarding sleep stage tracking - do you believe it's only a matter of algorithms and data analysis, or is perhaps hand movement (and other sensed data by the ring) *itself* not reliable enough for sleep stage indication compared to brain activity measurements?

Hey there, love your videos :)
    Just had a question :
Is there a reason why the data isn't sorted by date in ascending / descending order at 15:05 ?
Might have shown the nature of their algorithm (learning / static) :)

Was going to order one. However they have no UK supplier and it can’t be bought on Amazon. So I’d have to buy if off their international site, wait several weeks, then pay unspecified import taxes and fees. So that’s a major fail and I’ll forget the idea.

If you don’t mind me asking, are you left or right handed please?
Provided you are using the same size ring on both hands, I wonder if there is any difference in data as a persons most used hand is supposed to be ever so slightly bigger than the other. Just wondered if you’ve noticed any correlations?

Hi Rob, may I ask why do you think Oura ring 3 is not better than whoop devices in Test 8 of this video? I think among the sleep tracking devices you've tested, Oura ring 3 has the best performance in terms of detecting deep sleep which I think might be the most important component of a night sleep. Thank you.
