The fact that Kira had to look down and away from Quark's eyes when he said "Do you hear the cries of starving children? I don't." has got to be the most heartbreaking thing about this whole scene.
I think the key line is when he references the cries of children - with ears like those he would have been acutely aware of the sonic effect of the suffering on the station.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but all three of them were present on the staion during the cardassian occupation, so they all knew firsthand what that was like.

SantomPh, Kira was on the station during the Occupatiom for a couple weeks to gather intel, there was a flashback episode that covered that. It's also the first time she met the two of them.

Quark is a good guy in denial. When it came down to a choice. He always chose the welfare of others before profit. Not that he'd ever admit it.
He certainly tried to have both.
But the truest thing about Odo and Kira, is that despite knowing full well he was a good person in denial. They were kind enough to let him believe it. Let him believe he was a good ferengi. Sure they busted him plenty of times, but never enough for him to fail.
After all I wonder who the angels were who watched over quark. Cause there's no way he would have made it as far as he did without someone watching over him.
I even remember him being on the point of bankruptcy before some convenient chairs and bar equipment were put into storage in his closed bar.
Of course they weren't charity, we couldn't ever believe that quark was taking charity. He was just the best person to store all of the equipment with. It's not as though his generosity was being repayed.
Never would such a thing happen with a greedy ferengi.

What's interesting is when the Ferengi were talking with the other business-people race when the wormhole first opened, they were arguing about how to do business. The Ferengi prioritized short-term profits, while this other race prioritized long-term profits. It's simple game theory: you can gain greatly by cheating in one deal, but you gain more long term if you both co-operate. As Hagath once said, not every deal is about making money, and the friends that Quark made by these actions repaid him many times over.
Willing and Trustworthy Allies are a much more lucrative and valued resource than one may think.
There is market value, and then there's Speculative Value.
The more people he helps and the more palms he greases he'll be able to maneuver how he wants.
Quark is right. Sometimes, even in the darkest of circumstances, you have to step back and realize, 'things could be a whole lot worse' and appreciate that so you can keep moving forward.
For being the comic relief, the Ferengi had some really deep dialogue. That is what makes DS9 so great.
Deep Space Nine made far better use of many of the races introduced in next gen.

@@williammerkel1410 i wish they woudlve built on that more. its like TNG established an extended universe, but the only ones to use the other races as anything more than 1 dimensional one off characters seems to be DS9. which is a shame considering the whole "evolved sensibility" and "racism and greed are no more" stuff that star trek prides itself on. on a lot of occasions they really just moved the "us/them" divider one step over.

Even if the Federation doesn't like what the Ferengi are doing or who they are doing business with they don't send in warships to aggressively shut down trade routes. The Dominion is shown on at least one occasion attempting to do just that, and are often seen taking an equally hostile approach to other things they don't like other people doing.

Even the 'root beer'. Which interestingly tastes like a cleanser agent in eastern Europe, which is why that flavor of soda isn't popular in most parts of Europe.

There was an episode towards the end, where he basically was demanding Umax from a Dabo girl for her to keep her job. I thought that undid SO much awesome character development the prior several seasons.

he was drunk, it was after the 'resistance' started a fight in the bar, and damar said he could bring down the minefield. hell, rom wasnt even booked for execution at that point.

In his drunk exclamations he summed it up that the Dominion were boring customers. Rom hadn't been arrested yet.
Not just boring but creepy. the Jem'Hadar would stand around and stare at everybody while the Cardassian soldiers proceeded to be their cruel, blustery selves. To me, this was a demonstration of just how much Federation morals could change a person, even non-federation members eventually succumbed to the "better way of doing things" mindset the federation used (thankfully via demonstration instead of forced occupation). Quark would rather sell root beer then Kanaar. This is all even more funny because Quark and Garak commented on how the Federation didnt just believe in their creed, but actively used its Utopian bounty-of-plenty tactics to actively lure and outright subvert a species moral center to match their own, passively. I love the idea that though the Federation prefers to "play nice" and avoid "unpleasantness," that doesnt mean theyre intention about claiming space and, dare i say it, dominion over other races is any different then the Cardassians, Klingons, Romulans or the Dominion. They just rather people come into the "trap" willingly and of their own accord. Its wonderfully insidious and ultimately only a true outsider of societies (both native and foreign) would likely notice such a thing (like Garak and Quark, despite their subjective belief in their own societies...at least at first)

Gotta admit , he has an interesting way of looking at things . Then again , he does come from another planet . Quark is one of my favorite characters on DS9 .
For a non-human, he's depicted as the most human character on the show. That's the best part about him, is that we relate to him more than we could hope to relate to heroes.
The man reason we can relate to him so well is because he represents humanity as we are now and not what we could become.
Quark and Garak were my favourites. Watching a Garak and Bashir chatting was always a highlight for me.
DS9 in my opinion was the best trek series because it had such great characters, Quark, Bashir, Garak and even Dukat and Demar made this show so damned great. Oh and how could I forget Weyoun

All the other franchises just revolved around the senior staff and a couple of extra people. DS9 had the senior staff and Odo, Quark, Rom, Weyoun, Mourn, Dukat, Garak, Demar, Martok, Kurn, Gowron, Lida, Zeall, Vedik Barile, the Kye, and shot shit load of the people I left out.
Quark is such a good soul. He is deep into his Ferengi roots but also not blindly believe in them as he has seen it all, he retrospectively changes his views over time. This is how everyone should be.
Man's got a point. As long as you don't dissent or act against the Dominion's interests, the Dominion are actually quite benign overlords. They even kept the Cardassians from doing anything bad to the Bajorans, when they could have thrown them to the proverbial wolves.
That might have more to do with the treaty of non aggression they signed with the Bajoren government more then anything though. Say what you will of the Dominion, at least they honour their agreements lol.
That's what I mean. The Bajorans have nothing of real value to offer the Dominion, apart from the wormhole. And the Dominion now control that by taking Deep Space Nine. If they wanted to, they could have landed a legion of troops on Bajor and enslaved or wiped out the population. But they honoured their treaty and made damn sure the Cardassians did as well.
PR. You don't wipe out the first people who join you in the alpha quadrant and expect anyone else to ever join you. You need to shower gifts on the bajorans so that others see how awesome it is to join the dominion.
SirCraigius the Dominion honors treaties, at least with minor powers like the Tholians and Bajorans. The Romulans were their one big catch but luckily that was subverted.
Other than the fact that the Dominion, according to Weyoun, was planning to eradicate Earth's population once they conquered the Federation. I agree that it's all just PR. After a while, these space Nazis would should their true colours.

What i think alot of people forget about Quark is that he actually was around before the federation took over. He's familiar with the old occupation even if maybe in it's last few years.
I think it's funny after Picards speech on how people of that era no longer strive for monetary gains, they introduce the Ferengi.

With the federation the invention of replicator technology created a post-scarcity society where reputation became the new currency. Exotic matter reactions provide the power needed and the skill to build and operate such a device builds upon one's reputation. Being one of the best Starfleet has to offer grants Picard a level of authority and privilege that others do not, both as a result of his place in the ship hierarchy and in the mere act of exploring the unknown.
The Ferengi on the other hand switched to a none-repilcatable substance as a form of currency but likely back by debt like the modern Dollar to determine value. The issue being that sense most substances can be replicated the currency is used for both luxury and access to monopolies upon certain technology. Well using a replicator would be free the cost of power is charged to the user because of the value of the skills required to produce the vast quantities of power needed for such.
Basically, Humanity & the Ferengi both exist in a post-scarcity system but still places subjective value upon skill and ability of the individual. They simply market & monetize that value in a different fashion.
Mr.13 I agree with the majority of your analysis. Very well thought out. However much of what Picard, Sisco, and other captains accomplish while still based in skill is from a command hierarchy in a high discipline environment. They command respect because of their position in the hierarchy not solely on their skill with technology.
The chief engineer in most ships handles more technology responsibilities then anyone else including replicators, but is by no means the highest ranked officer or even the most respected. In Ferangi society before the end of Deep Space Nine how much you were worth ment everything. The rich were on top the poor were on the bottom. Your skill in earning profit was respected as long as you had profit as proof.
I wasn't trying to imply that the commanders/captains we valued for their technical skill but rather their overall abilities that serve in that position. It still plays to the idea of social reputation as currency.

It was an optimist's view in this case. The only thing he shut her down on was her automatic assumption that all he cared about was money. But it was certainly a vast improvement over the Cardassian Occupation without a doubt. But in the end...it was still an occupation.
3Rayfire technically even the Federation was occupying the station when Sisko was in charge. Unless it pulls a Babylon 5 and goes independent there is little to worry about
@SantomPh: It can't be called an "occupation" if they are there by request of the Bajoran government and is bound to protect Bajor. Then it's an "overseas (extrastellar?) base."
In Season 1 they made plain it was a "Bajoran station, under Starfleet Command."
The big difference would be the Federation would have something similar to a modern day Status of Forces Agreement. That would lay out the exact limitations of their authority, and in what situations Bajoran or Federation law would apply to Federation personnel.
In an occupation its "We're here, its our rules."
The Federation was _invited_ by the Bajorans once they reclaimed the station from the Cardassians. Bajor eventually wanted to join the Federation. The way I see it, I think Quark is just talking about Kira's impugning of his character. The station was still under an occupation, and a violent war was still going on upon planets and in space.
It WAS still an occupation. That's why Quark said "As occupations go....".
He knew what it was, he also knew that there were far worse things that could be happening.
The difference between the Dominion and the Cardassians is that the Dominion stands for order, while the Cardassians crave power, both personal and political. The Dominion in the Gamma Quadrant comes down brutally hard on those who defy it, but those who do not are mostly allowed to live in peace and even prosperity at the expense of their political freedom. The Cardassians offer no such compensation. Their soldiers are often uniformed thugs drunk on their own authority, and those who obey their rules barely suffer less abuse than those who fight back.

Then later in the series, Quark has a silent nervous break down, as he realizes the Cardassians, Jem'Hardar, and Vorta, etc, are torture to service for in a silent, smothering way.

Quark and Kira, the best actors in the show. All their scenes are so good. In 7 years, you never have a single moment where you don't think Nana Visitor is Kira and Armin Shimerman is Quark.
Aww the best part is right after this clip ends. Odo acknowledged Quark and says that he is right.

Quark was actually disliked by many Ferengi because he didn't gouge his customers (in particular the Bajorans during the occupation). He was, by their standards, a 'philanthropist'.

Plus, I'm sorry to say, I heard his mother goes around the house completely dressed! No wonders he merely owns a modest establishment, with that kind of influence. Exactly. The actions of Gul Daheel also show how much worse said occupation Could have been, had he been Prefect instead of Dukat.
The Dominion though at this time discuss their plans for exterminating the population of Earth if they win the war, which Dukat balks at. The latter also later muses upon how Weyoun would have had mercilessly exterminated the Bajorans, if in his place.
An example of the shades of grey in this series that're quite compelling.
Yeah, but Kira has a point that there's a slippery slope with conceding any power or legitimacy to the occupying forces. I think at this point, she, Odo and Quark are all basically in agreement actually. They all know firsthand that it could be much worse, so they're hopeful but wary. They're just disagreeing about how hopeful or wary to be exactly. Here, Quark is taking the optimistic stance ("we can work with this!") but just a few episodes later, he's changed his tune ("I don't like the Cardassians. They're mean. And the Jem'Hadar are creepy. I want to sell root beer again!") Here also, although the clip cuts off before this, Odo agrees with Quark. And he ends up buckling down on that stance before actually completely abandoning his friends and allies for a while. Quark ends up siding with Kira.
@@stephantom8237 The problem is, they were bracing for a rerun of Dukat's last term in power, since he was in charge again. And it never hit. Life aboard wasn't all that different, on the surface, from the way things were before, just more...professional. And that bothered them. The enemy should FEEL like the enemy, and when it doesn't, that's when it gets dangerous. That's when you become a collaborator.

Quark is one of those people with a heart of gold but who quickly realized that the world is made of coal and for people like him to survive one needs to burry those feelings deep down and be as pragmatic as possible.

"puts Kira in her place" seems like a reeeeally odd choice of words to summarize this clip. Especially since the way the narrative plays out shows Kira to be right--they shouldn't just accept this invasive, fascist rule--and Quark even joins her in actively resisting the occupying forces. He makes a good point here and it's a perspective that's worth keeping in mind, but it's not the whole story and it doesn't really negate Kira's concerns here.
It's also worth noting that Kira stands to lose the most here, as a Bajoran facing potential Cardassian control again (the Dominion might just give DS9 back to Cardassia and they might become as brutal as before). She's speaking from a place of fear because the stakes are higher for her. Quark will get by just fine either way (though he would certainly PREFER Federation control, and no starving children, etc.) so he's speaking optimistically (at least for now). Odo stands to GAIN the most from a Dominion victory. So the choices the three of them make in this sequence of episodes is interesting, and make a sad kind of sense.
Of course, their choices also align with their personalities and value systems. Odo is basically lawful neutral (he's generally good and pro-people, but he also sometimes seems to value orderliness and peace over actual people and justice--for instance, he sides with Quark when Quark's employees decide to unionize against his terribly unfair (but standard for Ferengi) work policies). Kira is chaotic good (doesn't care about breaking rules to save the innocent or people she cares about). Quark is true neutral and therefore kind of a wildcard. In this scene, he's saying the occupation will be fine, because he's a realist and he knows iit could be much worse. But a few episodes later, he's breaking into a Dominion jail cell to bust out Kira and the other resistance cell members, taking out a couple Jem'Hadar soldiers in the process, because he ultimately knows that the Dominion is very dangerous, has acted unfairly and will continue to, and he wants to protect the people he cares about.
in the 1990s, I saw Quark as a greedy, scheming, duplicitous little toad. As an adult, I realize that Quark is a practical capitalist. He would make a fine politician, and like every good businessman, he respects the ruthless efficiency of capitalism. All the high-minded ideals in the world don't save people from cold, from hunger, from laziness. Profit does that. Purpose does that. My hat is off to you Quark; you are what we should all aspire to be.^_^

That's because TNG Ferengi only had a handful of episodes, and even then the writers were still ironing out what they wanted them to be.

Without context this whole speech while deep kind of flies over my head.
Context: Cardassians (brutal and oppressive) occupied the planet Bajor for decades. The occupation ended, triggering the beginning of this show, where the Federation of Planets helped assist Bajor get back on their feet. Enter The Dominion (a rival coalition of planets to the federation, of sorts). Carnassia joins the Dominion, then the Dominion goes to war with the Federation. This leads the station to now once again be occupied, and once again by Cardassians, but now they are under the leash of their Dominion masters. This conversation is commenting on how different both occupations are to the characters, whom all had direct experience having been present during the previous occupation. Sure, they are both led by an oppressive force taking away freedoms of the Bajoran people, but the Dominion aren’t brutal oppressors in the same way the Cardassians were when they occupied the station. The Dominion is more like Communist China, where citizens are allowed to live in peace assuming they don’t make waves against the established order.

He has a good point. I think, (if they the won the war), the Dominion would have definitely curtailed some of the Cardassians excesses. As far as i can tell, every Dominion citizen has rights, whether Cardassian or hypothetically Bajoran - as long as they serve the Founders, all's good.
The Dominion cared for order above all else, so naturally did everything to maintain it. Subvert their order and they go to the other extreme to crush you, as they showed with the Cardassians. The thing was, they cared far too much for order, to the point of genetically engineering loyalty, which they would have done.
I wonder what life is like in the dominion when they aren't at war, we only see a very limited part of their cultural systems in the show-focusing on the founders, jem'hadar and vorta but not much for other groups.
They're always at war, that's the point, they're a constantly expanding force always looking for new territory to conquer. The Dominion would only not be at war if they'ed crushed all opposition.

Quark may be a dubious schemer, when ti comes right down to it, but, in this scene, the writers gave him the perfect lines. He's actually correct and Quark really stands out as a quality character in this scene.

It was always a key flaw in the Ferengi cultural psychology, the complacency for accepting oppression as long as profits were good. Even their own home world is a bit 1984. Half their race kept naked, unemployed and ambitionless (women.)
While I hold to that correlation doesn't mean casuation, our own real culture had done wholesale suffrage.... and look what it got us. Doubling the workforce caused wages to flatline, and without real added value, we've created a lot of bullshit jobs. Divorce rate is through the roof, so is single parenting, if there are any children at all, that is. Smaller business decreased leverage and ability for meaningful unionizing. Modern feminizm turned into wholesale men harrasment, backed by the law (basically, Stambul Convention revoked right to trail and rule that one is innocent until proven guilty!). Families, countries are fracturing. Women blidnly vote any social policy, regardless of long term circumstances.

I love this scene (and Quark lol) ! Kira still has a LOT of bad blood in Her system towards the Cardassian's, but Quark's logic bright Her back to reason.
I don't know about that. Kira ultimately decides that they need to actively resist the occupation or it will only get worse, and Quark ends up agreeing with her and backing her up. He helps her resistance cell by delivering intel about a potential weakness in the mine field that's protecting the federation, and by helping her get a message out to the federation about that. And then he literally breaks her and everyone else out of prison, directly defying the dominion by literally killing two dominion troops. (Meanwhile, Odo...)
I wish they had made a movie somewhere along the lines for DS9 so you could get the production quality to show how horrible things were supposed to be. Not sure if as a prequel or what.
At this time I can only hope they bring a character back for a guest spot on a newer show.

This was a great way to highlight the relative virtues of the Dominion in comparison to the Cardassians. The Dominion could be ruthless and barbaric, but only when they felt they needed to be. Besides their totalitarianism, pragmatism is the Dominion's key feature. It is in their best interests that Bajor and its people are kept healthy, happy, and peaceful, and so they endeavour to make it so. Compare the cruelty and barbarity of the Cardassians, which stemmed from an unbridled sense of cultural and racial superiority, giving them leave to commit every heinous act they could fathom on their helpless 'inferiors'. The Jem'Hadar are creepy monsters bred for combat, but they practice none of the casual brutality of the Cardassians, because it's not in their masters' interest to do so.
The Dominion will only do what is necessary, good or evil, to preserve their control. There's no hatred or contempt or pride in their actions.
Yeah, and that's a problem, and not just because people might rebel. If for any reason that those people can't control the Dominion finds itself incapable of preserving their control (for example, a regenerative disease in the Founders), the Dominion will think nothing of killing every single being under their care. The Cardassians wouldn't do that. They would be willing to cede some level of autonomy if necessary to preserve their sense of cultural and racial superiority.
Also, the Founders have a MUCH greater sense of cultural and racial superiority than the Cardassians. The real difference is that the Founders were much more far-sighted in terms of acting on that cultural and racial superiority. They saw that the beings they subjugated needed a sense of identity and purpose, and gave it to them in a way that served their sense of cultural and racial superiority, like the Jem Hadar.
