Yasss! Diehard Coach fan here. Most luxury brand prices have far exceeded the craftsmanship and the intrinsic value of the bag, the rest is just us paying for their branding and supporting their push to exclude the average buyer. Hate the exclusivity happening in the handbag industry. Thank you so much for this video.

I used to be a die hard Coach fan, too, but their quality has gone down since they started making them overseas. For me, the appeal was that they were an American company. I have a few classic Coach bags and they are lined in suede instead of fabric…so much nicer.

I tried Vivelle to borrow designer bags. I really found that the quality and design didn’t match the price point. I’m dinging MZ Wallace,Sanreve, Mansur Graviel, DeMellier, and even Coach are better suited for me.

Most bags I purchase nowadays are Coach & Kate Spade. I'm trying to get into supporting smaller companies. Me personally, I honestly can't justify me spending more than $500 on a bag. No bag is worth thousands of dollars bc I'm unfortunately adulting, lol.

I agree. I desire a LV bag but honestly I can't justify the cost. I am a Coach girl from waaaaay back (before they lined the bags with fabric). And their prices have increased as much as others. I do like the line that Coach let's you "design" your own bag, you can choose the colors and types of leather in select styles as well as choosing the hardware.
And you said something very wise earlier also. The price of some of these bags can be more than a first class trip.
I do appreciate the high-end luxery market, couture clothes, 5 start hotels, luxery cars, etc. However, given the current situation in the world today.....there are far better places for me to put that kind of money (should/when I have it). Good for you, I love seeing your growth.

i think this is such an interesting discussion. I got into luxury handbags over lockdown - to be honest it became a bit of an obsession watching hundreds of videos about them even though i can't afford to buy. Very quickly your idea of what is 'affordable' can change - like dropping $/£1,000+ on anything is a LOT of money, but in luxury around $/£1k is entry level or relatively affordable. Realistically I can't afford any of them and i considered buying on credit a few times, but i'm glad i didn't in the end.
I'm similar that as i've got older my responsibilities have increased and i'm having to be more sensible. I'm accepting that my level is really Kate Spade, Coach etc, and only then a couple of times a year, and that's OK. I'm enjoying scouring ebay for vintage and non branded pieces too that are more affordable and unique. Still love luxury bags, but just fantasy for now!

Thanks for sharing how your approach to luxury consumption is changing along with your priorities, Sergio. I have a few pieces (one LV, two YSLs, one Ferragamo and one Valentino) and I am increasingly interested in less ubiquitous brands like Lancel and Alaïa. The biggest thing for me is value for money and the current prices being charged by many houses are not in line with the quality. Value can be subjective and some consumers may still find value in purchasing at these price points for their own reasons, so I don't judge them for that. But for me, just because I may be in a position to purchase a bag at these price points doesn't mean that I don't think about what I'm getting for my money. I also prefer discreet branding and the bags I have reflect that so I like the appeal of lesser known brands for that reason as well. I love the bags I have and don't regret buying them but I reach for my Ferragamo the most because of the quality, value and timeless style.
At the end of the day, fashion is supposed to be fun, not a source of insecurities, pressure or worry and we can find that enjoyment at any price point with any brand, so continue to do what feels good and right for you.

Some of my favorites are Cuyana and Fox Roamer.

I think the last couple years I’ve started to purchase more contemporary bags. I like to buy bags for their style and I guess I was also tired of seeing the amount of luxury brands being shoved right to my face on the interwebs lol. And not to mention the price rise :| the value and quality doesn’t really add up.
I’ve always been a massive of TB and some other contemp. brands too, and lately, I’ve gotten into Coach and their vintage bags. It’s really relaxing to restore them or moisturise them to bring the leather back to life. :)

I think, we as consumers, made the luxury craze. Because of social media, everyone saw people using chanel or LV etc. It made everyone want one and everyone got “influenced”. The demand changed and the luxury brands saw it and kept raising prices. And people still buy it so they still will keep raising prices. I understand prices go up. But the % they are doing right now is insane!!! Before socials, you got a bag because u liked it and it gave you that feeling… then the only ones who saw it are the people you actually saw in person… and unless you’re in the clubs or going partying all the time, your circle of friends and fam were the only ones seeing the designers. Now with socials, people see it even if you’re staying home and just staging an outfit in your backyard… imo, I feel like social media and us as consumers did this lol. I always wanted a chanel jumbo for years. I had the mini and medium and wanted the jumbo to complete but never actually went for it. I got my mini in 2011 and medium in 2014. When I saw current prices I still got the jumbo because I’ve always wanted it and knew I would purchase it regardless of the price so I just bit the bullet and went for it. But, I’ve wanted it for years. I no longer will be buying that from chanel, I only liked classic flaps and I feel complete with my chanel collection. I still think the price was crazy and I was going to purchase it in 2017, but ended up not doing so and now I wish I had lol
I don’t care who has a bag, even if everyone has it or doesn’t. That doesn’t change my decision on getting a bag or not because I’m the one carrying it or not. So that’s not a factor. I don’t think LV has been doing anything special lately. I don’t like seasonal items because I feel like it’s dated. I don’t really buy chanel seasonal prices unless it looks timeless (boring) lol since it’ll be relevant in 10 years. I feel like all brands are mimicking each other so much that it also doesn’t feel unique or special… so many brands including contemporary brands like TB are mimicking the Hermes Kelly/birkin … I need things that look more special to that brand… it’s all becoming a pool of the same styles regardless of the fashion house… so yea- why pay 10,000 when you can pay 400 for a similar looking piece.

You’re right! But don’t forget that these brands finally come to a place where they can get rid of the “wannabe’s” These brands always wanted to be exclusive. And with these prices a lot of people will fall of the wagon they will give up buying because they can’t afford 8000 on a Chanel bag anymore. Only the real rich people will continue to buy.

You are absolutely right! The only time someone should purchase a bag from Fashionphile is if that item is discontinued. Their prices are a few dollars from being full price lol. You should add the couple hundred and buy brand new.

I never heard of Tory Burch before I started watching your channel and now I love my lee radziwel MORE than my Louis Vuitton, the quality is so much better. I’ve always been really interested in luxury products more for their quality and craftsmanship. I’m over seeing everyone and their mother with a Neverfull thrown over their shoulder. Tod’s, Mulberry, Loewe, Ferragamo, Hermès and Bottega have been sparking my interest more than logo-laden mass produced pieces…

Thanks for the update. I'm really speechless about the LV price increases. Especially since the quality of the newer LV is not as good as the old LV. It's really refreshing to hear someone else say this! I've been moving away from the big deisgn houses too. I will still buy them but my standards have gone up along with the ridiculous prices. I most recent 3 bags are the By Far mini, Coach Tabby in the orange and pink ombre and a medium top handle TALEL bag in blue. My dream bag is the mini lady dior but it's so expensive now that it has to be absoltely 100% what I want.

I'm from the UK and I truly believe that coach is very understated. I think their quality and craftmanship is sublime and deserves far more credit! I also have a vintage Dooney & Bourke leather equestrian saddle bag, possibly from the eighties and the metal on the bag is solid brass and will last more than a lifetime! I like Tory Burch, Mulberry purses etc. Other bags that say Borse in Pelle made in Italy on the inside of a bag are usually great bags to get your hands on! . ❤️❤️

i cannot i agree more with you, some brands luxury brand are just overrated some other that are very good quality- price point are just underrated like crazy. It's such a shame. And like you said the quality of those luxury bags nowadays doesn't justify the extremely high price for a bag. But they will keep increasing because people keep buying them even though prices are very high it is also promoted buy social media.

Totally agree! I have been watching your content since you started and it’s been wonderful to watch you grow and develop your sense of style and fashion thoughts. I started with Coach over 10 years ago and have dabbled in contemporary and premier brands. You’re right. Back over 10 years ago a speedy and neverful was well under $1000.00 and now I just recently saw the prices since COVID and lost my mind. I went on a mad splurge of Coach during last year because I am in love with their classic styles. They are my ride or die favorite and they always always looks amazing. I always go back to Coach. I bought my first Chanel wallet for myself as a gift for passing my MA exam and I love that little piece and it’s my only Chanel. With the prices, it might be my only one ever. Even Gucci went up in piece too. At this stage I prefer Gucci over LV. I’m tired of seeing the same LV over and over and over again and these price increases are nuts. There’s also so many other really good brands. Most people don’t talk about Dooney and Bourke. I love them. Also, don’t even get me started on the amazing local crafts who manufacture gorgeous leathers locally in the US. So underrated. Thanks for this as always love your honesty! ❤️🙏🏽❤️🌹

I completely agree. I have one Chanel black caviar medium flap bag and the rest are contemporary bags from Coach, TB, and MJ. I haven't worn my medium flap out yet. Really love your style. Totally agree. A lot of high end designer bags are lacking design innovation. These fashion houses have become greedy and complacent; it is a prestige grab, with the consumer literally paying the price. Contemporary brands are creating new silhouettes in innovative fabrics, experimenting with vegan leathers and grabbing more attention than snoozy Chanel flap bags.

  • @pretaporterp
    @pretaporterp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Firstly, I'm a new subscriber and I admire your maturity and humility esp. at such a young age. I too am a fan of contemporary brands--the quality, price point, and peace of mind is sometimes superior to luxury. I'm also a fan of the luxury bags that were around when I was your age, so lucky for me I can find them pre-owned for often less than a new contemporary bag.
That said, I do not knock luxury. As someone that works in the alternate reality of high luxury retail, the person that can spend $30k on a single bag like it's a pack of gum is the reason I have a job. But for the aspirational customer as I was explaining this to a co-worker who wanted a "nice watch" just because...some luxury goods are not just the sticker price of the item. They are a lifestyle/commitment... that comes at a cost. For ex fine swiss timepiece, is like driving a German luxury car--requires $$$ maintenance to preserve the complicated movement. Once bags/jewelry start exceeding the cost of a car!!, this is considered an asset, social media has made the value of these mainstream. These are things people fight over in court and we see the crazy increase in luxury theft. These are itemized on insurance policies, wills, pre-nupts, divorces, stored in safety deposit boxes at the bank, etc... I think all of this is beyond the day to day life of the aspirational customer. Which some luxury brands (Chanel, especially) want to try to claw back their facade of exclusivity.

    • @luxetolowkey

Yes!! I completely agree with you. I love luxury and learning the heritage behind certain brands. However, now that I am 23 and have responsibilities like rent and a car payment I have a different outlook. These price rises are ridiculous. A big part of luxury that I enjoy is seeing an item and being able to work hard and save for an item. But right now by the time you have saved the money the item has gone up by $500.

I agree. I'm really leaning more to the contemporary brands. I love the luxury brands but at the end of the day we are talking about a bag with someone's name on it! I bought 2 saint laurent bags and they cost as much as having my backyard fenced in. More than my landscaping and equal 2 mortgage payments. I'm so over it. I have just one bag on my wish list right now. I will get it someday but for now I don't think so. You're right again about Tory Burch. Some of the contemporary brands can cost as much as the luxury brands did a few years ago. If worst comes to worst I can just enjoy the massive collection I already paid for. This morning I did order a Brandon Blackwood bag in denim. He's another alternative other than the luxury brands
