    I just shot a feature film with the S5. I shot into the Ninja V so I got Full Frame, 5.9k RAW Proress 422 at 12 bit all day long in hot temps and never had to think about the camera once. The image is pure poetry, same color science and the Varicam. I have shot Vari's and Alexas and Reds, etc, and this image stands up with the best of them. You cannot tell them apart in the edit except for the fact you have a full frame aesthetic which to my eye is much better than Super 35. Just two small issues, rolling shutter, you have got to be careful with action sequences in full frame, no fast pans, make the action come toward or away from the camera, and you will brake lots of micro HDMI cables unless you clamp them. The S5 (not the mk II) is simply the best bang for your buck out there, and even cheaper now because of the advent of the MK II. You literally have to spend 50k on an old Vari to get anywhere near the image out of this little monster. It is the same sensor as the S1H but you can have two of these for the same price. The S5II X looks like it might offer some redundancy back up in terms of internal codecs and the enhanced IBIS, just in case the Ronan takes a crap, but I would happily shoot my nest 2 or 3 films on the S5 and know I can get 5.9k RAW all day without worry. Important point for nubes: the "cinematic look" has nothing to do with the camera. If you point a 90k Alexa at a bag of laundry in the midday sun it is going to look like a bag of laundry in the midday sun. The "cinematic look' is all about composition, colors, lights, shapes, textures, the art department and the costume people working in concert around the color palette, all in front of the lens. It has very little to do with the camera apart from use of lenses, anamorphic, long lens compression, control of depth of field, etc, not the camera. Most medium price cameras today are good enough as long as your composition is right. Lastly, auto focus: I shot a wedding on the Sony A7 Mk III, it's supposed to have great auto focus, right? It fecking hunted right when the groom was putting the ring on the bride's finger. As a matter of filmmaking skill, but also as a caution, do not rely on any auto focus when someone is paying you for your work. Unless you are shooting youtube videos, box openings etc, take pride in deciding where the camera is focused, that is a major part of the art.

    • @RoryandCasey
      @RoryandCasey  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh 100% man. Autofocus is not for every shot especially at a wedding. But it's really nice to have especially on repeatable shots. I've been manually focussing for years and can do it whenever I need to but it's nice not to have to for some moments or to just be able to see a moment happening and hit record as you're bringing the camera to eye level and it's already locked on before you'd even have a chance to start manually focussing. It's clutch in those scenarios.
      I agree with most of what you were saying though. The original s5 is great.

    Nice update from real life usage! In some future video would you be interested in explaining your process for setting ISO and white balance during weddings? Wedding pros seem to have some of the most challenging setups with awful mixed lighting, rapid changes in lighting, low ISO environment and then suddenly in high ISO environments, etc. THNX!

      Thanks for watching! I actually did a video a little bit ago that had my methods for very quickly setting white balance which I use all the time at weddings. For ISO I try to stick to either 640 or 4000 but I'm happy to go higher than 4000 on the dance floor. I'm pretty happy with the image without noise reduction up to 12800 but will push to 51200 in a pinch but I know I'll need to clean that up in post. Ideally though I try to stick to the native ISO's

    What is the difference between Auto-focus Continuous (AFC) and Auto-focus Single (
    AFS)? .... My S5ii behaves in same way in both the modes? ... Also, in Human priority mode, it tracks human body, but if something e.g a shoulder or hand comes in the front, it will focus on the hand, even if the hand is not covering the face. This is one of the biggest drawback for keeping the face in focus.

      For doc work you honestly can't go wrong with a 24-70. It's versatile and provides an amazing image. I can shoot an entire wedding on that one lens. It's probably not going to be long enough for sports though where something like the sigma 100-400 will be better but it's a very specific lens for a specific use.
      As for other gear recommendations... I have another video going over all the gear I use in a wedding day and a lot of it is listed in this video's description 😊

Hopefully in the upcoming firmware update lumix will fix and add compressed and uncompressed RAW shooting modes to be able to choose for even higher image file quality. Lumix's image file is very beautiful and flattering. Hopefully panasonic listens and somehow they can fix these in a firmware fix. A sony alpha camera user like me from the a7m4 generation switched to lumix s5ii also because I want to experience the new things that the company brings, hope panasonic can improve its AF to remove the prejudice that the camera company has traditionally slow focus.

On the AF I would say it is reliable, you just have to be a bit more intentional with it, given certain situations, where as the Sony is more plug-and-play, but it’s not perfect either, and the manual focusing features are way better than Sony, so it kind’a balances out.

      @@FrankJoseph911 haha I get that... TH-cam is a playground of clickbait and sponsored videos. I haven't used a sony camera in a long time. I've had associates shoot for me on sony in a few weddings over the last few years and the colours are not good. I'm not loyal to any brand, over the years I've shot panasonic, sony, canon, fuji, Nikon and for what I do with my workflow I've landed on and am very happy with Panasonic.
      I'm not at all sponsored, endorsed or given anything by panasonic, I just like their stuff (though if panasonic are reading this my inbox is always open)

    I have the first Gen model. It gets the job done.
    Disappointed in the mk2. NO 4K 120. No FHD 240.
    A crop at 4K 60?? No lenses for this system.

    • @RoryandCasey
      @RoryandCasey  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Have to mostly disagree with your disappointments for professional use. 4k 120+ is still very niche and not necessary for 99% of professional users. 240 less useful again.
      Even 4k 60 for most professional users is more of a niche setting and a crop doesn't bother me for the small amount I need to use it.
      The lenses definitely are not as broad as Sony or canon but that is changing over time.

    still mft here, I am looking to upgrade from gh5 and bpcc4K? S5 II, or should I go for GH6? Lenses is the problem... Also I shoot everything in log/BRAW. Is the S5 II OK for skin tones compared to blackmagic/canon/sony?

    • @RoryandCasey
      @RoryandCasey  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're heavily invested in MFT lenses and you don't need autofocus then the gh6 is a beast of a camera you can't go wrong with it. S5 will have better low light performance and better autofocus.

      About 3 seconds. But that’s only after it’s been switched off….when you’ve been using it but leave it switched on but don’t use it for a while it goes to sleep, but starts immediately when touching the shutter button.

    • @aiseurnae5976
      @aiseurnae5976 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can confirm the S5II is less sharp, it uses more sharpening by default and more noise reduction with most profiles, low light details look mushy compared to the S5, almost like the 4K is upscaled from a lower resolution. I made some videos about this issue. V-Log is better but not the best profile for low light.
