I was taught not to use steam when interfacing :) in mass producing they use special machines that sandwich the fabric and interfacing together using just heat and force. There are small glue dots on interfacing fabrics, and so steaming might make it come loose or not stick at all. Also another tip that I was taught - when interfacing very large pieces, it is better to interface the whole fabric first, and then cut your pattern pieces. Otherwise interfacing can shrink your perfectly cut and measured pieces.
If you're ever worried about crushing the nap of the velvet (the raised fuzzy bit) while ironing you can make a fabric sandwich to help prevent it. Place the piece you want to iron face down on another piece of velvet that is laying face up and then gently iron. This also works great with corduroy as you can line up the ribbing to interlock with your scrap piece. I've also heard of people using a terrycloth towel as the under piece but haven't tried it myself.
I use teflon tape for covering the ends of my metal boning. Learned that tip from Gertie’s Lamour dress sewing tutorial on TH-cam. It’s a plumber’s tape available at Home Depot or Lowes.
Thank you! I really enjoyed working with it as well. Two of my favorite makes have been on velvet, it always gives it such a luxe look in my opinion. 😊❤️❤️
Thank you! Yes, the black velvet is actually very hard to photograph unfortunately. Good attention to detail! I did want to add something to the neckline originally, but I just couldn't find the right trim for what I had in mind in time. I did actually order a pretty beaded & rhinestone trim that I might be adding after the fact, but I do really love it how it is now so I'm torn!
Hi Cait, I love your channel and your smile❤ So inspiring how you talk about creating things, I'm also a self taught sewist and learnt a lot from your videos. Have you tried the sewing mentorship?
Hi Cait, question for cutting out pdf patterns. Do you print yours at home and tape them together, get them printed at a large print shop or use a projector?. I’ve been sewing for years but am intimidated about printing! There are so many Etsy patterns I want to try and get started with. Thank you! Loving your videos
Hi! I print out mine at home and tape them together with clear packing tape. It's a bit time consuming but worth it in the end. I usually do that part while I watch a movie or some youtube videos :) So glad to hear you're enjoying my channel! Thanks so much for watching & best of luck on your next project!
The dress is stunning Cait! Haha I admire your commitment on interfacing everything 😅 that’s such a tedious process. Little tip - Armscye is pronounced Arms Eye :)
Haha truthfully I had no idea they made black interfacing until I read this comment and looked it up 😆. My local JoAnn’s only had white when I was shopping for the project.

Thank you! I will definitely apply this next time I’m interfacing! ❤️❤️

So interesting seeing the Elizabethian fashion returning. I get to live during these times. ❤️
This is so lovely in the black velvet! It’s been ages since last time I sewed with velvet, but I loved doing it.

So beautiful - even more so in person I’m sure!!! I’m surprised you didn’t add a detain to the neckline based on your inspiration pictures xx

Why didn’t you use black interfacing
