The highlight of quarantine - collectively hanging on to our butts :) Thanks again!

State of the confederation, maybe? I wish I had considered earning my MLIS for less money in Canada. But SJSU was super convenient online.

    Dear Peter,
I’m an aspiring Librarian and have watched your channel for the last several months and really enjoy your content! The video you created on how you became a Librarian really resonated with me. I’m married to a Korean Linguist in the AF, we will be stationed in Hawaii soon and I can’t help but feel like pursuing an MLIS is somehow irresponsible of me. Between all of the debt I will have to accrue and librarianship being a harder to break into field, I feel trapped in deciding between a career I know works with military life and a career I truly want. Do you have any advice for me? We have a lot in common and thought you might have a few wise words. Thank you 💜

      Hi Julia,
Great question, and one I don't have a good answer to! Something to keep in mind is that an MLIS is good for more than just being a librarian, (although if you want it specifically to be a librarian, that might not mean a whole lot of good news to you) and many of those jobs have a pretty good return on investment. The cost is definitely a big hurdle for many folks, and that sucks for sure -- but it isn't insurmountable. Incidentally, that's partly why I did my MLIS in Canada: cheaper all around for a high-quality degree!
Being in Hawaii though, you'll likely want to track down an all-online program to do, which is good too. Hawaii's cost of living is pretty high, although your partner will be pretty well compensated for that -- if you do a distance program and get a job on the side, paying it off wouldn't be terribly hard to do.
Otherwise, I just want to remind you that everything is scary, and nothing's normal, and that everything will come out in the wash eventually. :)

Thank you so much for the kind and wise words 🙏 Do you have any videos that address other opportunities one could seek out with an MLIS other than librarianship? I’d love to do more research! Not surprising I’m sure :)

@@juliadumaurier9494 Sure! So one thing to look at is my first video, "what is library and information science?" -- toward the end i mention some of the careers out there that are suitable for the degree. Another thing you can do is search for "federal government librarian" which should bring you to an article about finding "librarian" jobs for the USG, what to look for, etc... But whatever school you decide to apply to (or look into) should have a "career paths" resource outlining the different options, and what kinds of courses you should take to be suited for them!
