  • I've been thinking about trauma and memory lately, and a thought/memory came to mind that I wanted to share with y'all. We'll probably talk more about this in the future, but for now, here's end-of-day me thinking end-of-day thoughts.
    CREDITS:
This video was shot and recorded on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Musqueam people.
Music: "Lola" performed by the United States Marine Band, in the public domain.

I am so glad you are enjoying the book, and I hope the last few chapters about healing and recovery are helpful too!!!

I was at one of the branches on the day GVPL closed, and was actually the person to lock the return chute. It all felt weird and scary and I was really happy for the handful of books I was able to take, and the digital services.
Although we were paid a bit for a few months, the management stung pages along with "we'll update you about your job class being recalled in May... October... August". Come August, they let us know they wouldn't be bringing pages back, although we could apply for the job once they restructure it if we want.
It still breaks my heart when I think about how I am definitely no longer a person who works in a library, and how little pages were/are valued.

I worked at an arcade. We had already announced we would be closing the day of the St. Patrick's day parade since the neighborhood is so chaotic on those days we wanted our staff to be able to stay home and stay safe. I was going in while one of the machines was being fixed so I could grab something I had left the night before. That's when the owner decided to close for "at least two weeks" and a few days later the governor closed all non-essential businesses

    Hey hey! Nice video!
Working in fitness & community recreation we had a lot of the same issues and the same response - people expressing gratitude for the work we did (before, during & after the various lock downs). Still plenty of work to do in the coming year(s) but it feels good to have that confirmation of what we contribute in the mean time.

This somehow gives me hope for the future, uncertain or not. Hang in there.

I didn't really get a "last day open" at my library, or at least not until after it happened. I work alternate Fridays and Saturdays and Friday, March 13 was a "weekend Friday" for me. I saw a movie in a theater (a noon showing of Onward, I was the only one in the screening, brought hand sanitizer and didn't touch the armrests) and got a haircut, knowing that I probably wouldn't be doing a lot of either of those things in the near future. When I got out of my haircut I checked my phone, where there was a text from my library saying that once they closed at 5:30 that day they would be closed indefinitely. I had (and still have!) plenty of unread books and streaming options so I didn't feel the need to do any last minute borrowing and I'm not quite sure what things were like those last few hours in my library.

Interesting, at my current system, and in the system of Philadelphia, the limit even pre-pandemic was 50. I think it's helpful, especially when families of children are checking out dozens of tiny board books. (We are also fine free!)

oh wow. My library system's limit is 100 total items. we limit dvds to 10 , cds to 25, and video games to 2 but everything else is fair game. we've also beenfine free for 2.5 years.

I think this video is awesome and wholesome, but all the more because of the unintended upload date: 20 years after 9/11

Yeah, that occurred to me too an hour or so after uploading!

Sensible decision in the context. Better home with people in lockdown than sitting on a shelf not moving.

This was the big thought that went through my mind, tbh. We knew we were going to close our returns but didn't know when we were going to open them up again. Some patrons were worried about that, but the sensible decision we had to make was, "regardless of what happens, we're doing this here and now and we can sort it out later. Don't worry, just take what you need or want."
