  • New year's Eve, 2023:
    Hello everyone!
A short video this week - to say Happy New Year to everyone who has watched the channel since last January when I started - and also to say Hello to anyone who has just stumbled across Gladys by accident. I ought to explain, for you newer viewers, that Gladys is the name of my narrowboat which is being built. Not completed yet, but I'm hopeful of a launch some time in the first part of 2024.
Believe it or not, some viewers have asked to hear more of my unique style of guitar playing, so you guys are getting rewarded with a little blast on my Admira A15. I haven't played any guitar for a couple of months, so have spent a few hours practicing before filming this video. The result is still very questionable, but please stay with it - the pain will soon pass!
Hope you enjoy the video, albeit a short one. I'll catch up with you again on January 8th I expect - back to the usual Monday morning schedule.
Have a great New Year and see you all again in 2024!
    Cheers,
    Jeff
By the way, if you do enjoy the video, then please consider subscribing - it really helps me to grow the channel!

      Actually since you're a musician I have a question.
Do you have an intument to recommend for a beginner?
I've been thinking about buying one lately but Ive never been educated in music. So I'm hesitant
I was thinking maybe a guitar but It may not be a good option since I have very long nails and I've been told it even leaves blisters on your hands. Not to mention everyone in my entourage who owns a guitar all gave up within a year 😑. So I'm a bit discouraged.
So maybe a keyboard?? I'd appreciate some advice if it's not too much too ask?

Hi Tessa, you're very kind in describing me as a musician! I'm really not very good at all (mostly self-taught, I did have some lessons with a guy who was a tutor and who actually builds guitars - but I found him simply overwhelming and gave up!), but I am happy to offer some advice, being someone who never played anything until about 10 years ago.
Obviously, as you see, guitar is my favourite instrument - but you're correct about the long nails - whilst they would be ok on your right hand (assuming you are right handed) for playing a Spanish guitar like mine, your left hand would need very short nails, in order to press down firmly on the strings along the neck of the guitar. (or vice versa if you're left handed - and you'd need to buy a left-handed guitar in that case).
I used to have a Yamaha keyboard and your nails won't be such a problem if you got one. There are lots to choose from and they need not be too expensive. I'd suggest you get a full width one rather than one of the shorter ones available, as it's more like playing a piano then. You'll need somewhere you can place it - at a suitable height - or else maybe buy an adjustable folding stand, which is what I did. Most keyboards have sound effects so that you can choose which musical instrument it sounds like. I used to like playing with either church organ or harpsichord selected. You can usually plug in headphones too if you don't want the rest of the house to hear you!
You'll probably get a how-to-play book with the keyboard but basically, most simple tunes revolve around the middle C note - once you get used to where that is, you'll soon be playing familiar tunes and songs. Then, there are plenty of teach-yourself books on Amazon.
You don't need to be able to read music to get going. Once you get into it though, you'll probably learn to do that - at least to some extent (as I do).
So I hope that helps! Good luck and let me know how it goes 👍

@@Gladysthenarrowboat Thanks I'll update you after a while. I've decided for the keyboard since I'm actually left handed. Thank you very much for the detailed explanation! Take care of yourself!
