Was at my 8th year of doing night shifts and my constantly drunk neighbors(with a non stop screaming recently newborn) just won't let me have a minute of sleep in those 3 days. It ended in the worst way. Smacked the guy in the mouth. Later that evening went to work in almost insane state of mind and withdrew 410 Euro payment instead of 4,100, i was out to lunch. I’ll never forget it. It felt like I only play for 10 hours. I remember after trying to ask for a ride home from my mom an she thought I was drunk because I kept stuttering and was shaking when I grabbed things. But I wasn’t, I was just tired. I have also done four days awake (though potentially I slept approx 10 mins per night) when I was in my early 20's (Not due to drugs etc). No hallucinations, however I did find that I would have time-skips in my cognitive memory, where I would remember part of a conversation, but not all of it (though I had apparently responded with basic responses)
On day four I was micro-napping, where I'd "blink" but my eyes would remain closed for 1+min and I'd jerk awake.
And there were definitely impacts to my health, my skin was dry and pale for a few days afterwards, emotions were heightened, but I felt wide awake and almost euphoric for the first few days after the initial 'lull', and for the first few days I was continuing to interact and do the same activities without noticeable impact to those observing me (besides potentially a slight lag.)

I think the story is not real. Regarding sleep deprival it is used as an interrogation technique. Myselfe I did hellweek in officer scool. We where not allowed to sleep. This was done by forced marching. What I can confirm is people start sleeping when marching. Strange they always walk to the right before stopping. Just standing. Its called micro sleep. People also start seeing things that in not there. We when allowed 5 minutes rest to sit down. How often I do not remember. Everybody started sleeping within seconds. Even when eating. Sleep was more important to the body than food and water. The exercise had to be cut after maybe between 40-45 hours. A few guys strayed into the forest to get some sleep. We had make sweeps to get them back.
This was in 1986, late autumn in Norway. Cold, dark and raining. Walking was an important way to keep us warm.
We did not get any drugs, but some coffein tablets to keep us awake. After that we got a minimum of 4 hours sleep a day. Some years later I was told the instructors doing this hellweek was almost demoted because it was sadistic and not safe.

  • @TheBlessedRed
    @TheBlessedRed 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Four and a half days is about the longest I've ever gone without sleep (no help from outside substances other than some military decision making) and I do NOT recommend that at all.
The hallucinations are very real. Motor functions become almost nonexistent without muscle memory. Basic understanding of most things is much more difficult. It becomes difficult to just have a normal conversation. There are some very real periods of micro sleep, as mentioned in the video.
It's a strange feeling to be focusing as hard as you can on something due to lack of sleep and then suddenly you're waking up because you didn't realize you dozed off for a minute or however long it was you were out for.
Severe lack of sleep isn't a fun feeling. And sleep deprivation is one of the most effective forms of torture known to man. You can actually break a persons mind and make him/her insane with sleep deprivation.

I would stay awake all day and when night rolled around I would turn all lights on in the house to ward off anything startling me in the dark corners while I played games and watched TV to help me ignore the noises in my house. I would go without sleep several days at a time and would start to see shadows and people moving out the corner of my eye, and on more than one occasion ran for a weapon for something I was certain I had saw coming for me in a dark corner. I stayed there for 6 months and was a wreck by the time I decided to move in with family. I lived in one corner of the house so that nothing could be behind me. But the longest I've been awake is around 48 to 60 hours. It's hard to keep track when you just have to keep going. It's easier if you have varied tasks. Impossible while driving straight roads. Gotta have curves and obstacles to stay alert.

Yep, this is my area of specialty. Yes 4 days is an inflexion point. The drugs are the problem here though. @@erfho8y The basic concept of this story is actually quite correct and explains a very real phenomenon. I speak from direct experience as a non-military specialist/consultant in a certain field. Basically, there is a process that has been experimented with over many centuries. It’s all about possession, think exorcism and where that story came from? Look at ancient stories of such a process. That’s the ballpark we are in here. What if people with a dark intent wanted to weaponise such a process? Well they did, but it is largely useless for accurate military application due to complete lack of command control. Think more like a berserker, just load them up, point in the general direction and stand back. Folks who have toured the Middle East theatre would understand this.
We have all seen the videos of meth-heads with almost superhuman power that require 6 police to hold them down etc. so what is happening here? Some refer to this as some seriously “biblical shit!”. A lot of stories like this a based in real experiences, quite overwhelming when you see it for yourself. Certain drugs were found to enhance the opportunity for a possession to take place. The best so far is meth. In my circles we say “it allows the big boys to come in”. These could be referred to as Satan’s soldiers. 😎
Sleep deprivation has been a fascinating field of exploration for a very long time. It does not lead down the same road as the possession topic unless a person already has a specific tendency/availability. Mostly sleep dep is used to investigate certain levels of perception, think about the stories of Shaman. It can be like taking LSD. Day 3 or 4 is always fun, that’s when the little black spiders come out. Sleep dep renders your motor functions to be quite useless, making a cup of tea can be dangerous 😂

Even one story were they got bombed by jdams and when the damage assasment team came in to check, there was this one dude half underneath the rubble who cleary had "more than just a scratch" that still had the power to pull a granade from his vest and tried to pull the pin. But going back to what you and the other gentlemen were talking about I have also heard about some of these stories about drug addicted people who in the face of the public would be weak and couldn't even rip a leaf but when they are high on whatever there on they show almost superhuman strength as you said and which is also a very fascinating subject about possession, and exorcism like stuff but what I trying to say is about the whole actually seeing a dream while your asleep. Am currently 20 years old turning 21 in December but in all of my life up until now I have only have bits and piece of each dream I have some I remember as if I just had them and so where I don't I wish I could actually see and live my dream wither its a bad one or a good one I just want to see it with my own eyes then just closing my eyes and seeing darkness for what seemed like a minute then am awake and the sun is out. But this would be my last question but do you think you could actually tell me what this dream I had when I was very little about right around when I was about 9 or 10 if not then it was still good to hear about your explanation about this topic on sleepiness

Well, "Mama Elvis" was given Desoxyn (generic brand pharma grade methamphetamine) by her doctor, and considering she was too fat to move around the house, she depended on her son to assist her. Naturally, as most teenagers do, Elvis took a few to experiement with himself one day, and that eventually led to what we now know as a very high and sexually charged Elvis going 100mph on the Ed Sullivan show shaking his hips and shit while sweat pours off his face.

I was a section commander and remember at least 3 of us suffering severe hallucinations. Not sure if ‘Holdfast’ is still in the curriculum with the change in battle theatre and trend in Iraq and Afghanistan, as there were a lot of FIBUA exercises added to teach room/building clearance etc. can’t imagine battle trenches would’ve been a valuable use of phase 2 training for the Middle East. Although this does seem to be very fictional, if nothing else because of people living sfter removing organs, I’m sure @Jameson Travrls, aswell as many others that have experienced extreme sleep deprivation, will agree, the level of craziness spoken about is more than believable, although gas or no gas, I’m pretty positive, that medically, it’s not possible to survive 15 days without sleep (even 7 maybe) let alone 30, without sleep.

Tired? Yeah. I was a Marine platoon commander in Vietnam in 1969. We operated mostly at the squad and platoon level. There were a couple of times we operated as a company but not in any standard tactics. The company would be in the same area and we took orders from the company commander but we still operated as independent platoons, especially in the mountains and jungles. There were two battalion size operations in which we did operate as a company with three platoons on line during sweeps for about a week, but that was about it.
Anyway, I never had more than 34 Marines in my platoon that included a machine gun squad and a 60 mm mortar squad. I had two platoon sergeants for short periods but neither were experienced with infantry platoons. I once had two of my 3 squad leaders were Lance Corporals and one was a corporal, but most of the time I only had three lance corporals. Turn over due to KIA, WIA, disease, accidents, transfers, and rotations back to the states was extremely high.
My platoon CP was usually just me and my radio operator. I usually paired my platoon guide with the corporal squad leader and they would alternate checking lines every hour or he would take a night patrol with one of the inexperienced lance corporals.
Keep in mind that while boot camp in those days was very good, the School of Infantry training was nearly as good as it is today. In 1967 because of the demands of Vietnam boot camp was reduced from 13 weeks to 8 weeks and infantry training was reduced from 8 weeks to 4 weeks. Replacements to my platoon didn't have the basics of map reading, using a compass, land navigation, or sound squad tactics. They were not cross trained with the M-60 machine gun or the 60 mm mortar.
But one of the most important skills needed in Vietnam was know where the Hell you were. That was not easy for me and impossible for my squad leaders.
The only navigation aids we had were the standard military compass and out of date French maps of Vietnam. Later we did also get Pictomaps made from satellite images, but there were often a lot of clouds that covered the image and many of my firefights seem to happen where the clouds were. Go figure. I used both. The Pictomaps were better in some cases where terrain had changed, but the French maps were more accurate as to where villages were or used to be.
When operating in the rice paddy areas, there were not major terrain features to correspond to the map and when operating in the jungles and mountains, I where couldn't see any major terrain features, I didn't know where exactly I was.
Why was that important? Because without the ability to do a cross section with the compass on major terrain features, it was really difficult to tell where I was because the maps were out of date and the satellite Pictomaps were not that useful in those days. I felt lucky if without specific verified locations on out of dated maps if I was 1-2 thousand meters of where I actually was.
I only had one radio in the platoon which was normally used to communicate with the company but we would switch freqs for resupply missions and when we had to call in artillery or close air support. When I arrived in Vietnam, I had never been trained on the M-16. The Basic School only had M-14's. It was a bit embarrassing that my own Marines had to show me how to disassemble the M-16. No one had battle sights. Although the PRC 77 was introduced into Vietnam in 1968, I initially used the PRC 25 and only received the PRC 77 about six months into my tour. The PRC was light and mobile but not encrypted so we used local codes for coordinates such as a car code which measured distance from a predesignated coordinated. It went something like this: From Ford, down 3 right 7. The code changed everyday and included birds, animals, cities, etc. The PRC 77 was encrypted but required the NESTOR system added to it which doubled the weight and required more batteries. The radio operator carried that plus his combat gear. Never once heard a complaint from my radio operator, the machine gunners, or the mortar me. God bless their dedication.
The context is important because there was no sleep during daytime activities and the radio had to be manned 24/7. My platoon mostly operated independently for up to a month or two at a time. We would be brought back to the battalion (in the middle of nowhere) for three days to have hot chow, showers, rest, replace uniforms, etc. But we didn't get much rest because we were required to stand part of the battalion perimeter at night which meant my Marines didn't get much sleep. So when operating as a platoon, at night I would stand radio watch an hour and my radio operator would stand it for an hour. The reason was because the chances of staying awake more than an hour at night was zero due to the mental and physical exhaustion.
Not a problem for a few days, but for two months, it was really difficult to stay awake just an hour at night. And it didn't always work. Into the end of the first month into the second month in the field it became increasingly a struggle of the will to stay wake for that hour of radio watch.
The platoon daytime activity would typically go from sun up to sun set. A long day. The regiment required platoons to run two daytime and two night time squad activities every day. That's four squad activities with only three squads and so every day one squad had to do two activities and the night time activities were all night. On all night ambushes, it was common for most to all Marines to fall asleep.
Add to this the stress of the firefights, the mines, the booby-traps, the unbearable heat in the dry season and the constant rain in the monsoons, and you have a real problem with Marines being alert, especially at night.
During the monsoon, I learned that when it was my time to sleep, I'd just lay down in the mud in a driving rain and fall asleep. What, just lay down in the rain? Yep, we didn't have tents, only ponchos and during the monsoon the poncho was about as useful as a wet paper towel. You were soaked 24/7 and the uniform began to rot off. A form of trench foot was a problem because there was no way to dry out the feet.
But back to sleep. Keeping Marines awake on the lines at night was a major effort. Between my platoon guide and me, he checked on the half hour and I checked lines on the hour before I got my less than one hour of sleep.
It wasn't all that bad the first month or two, but the mental and physical exhaustion just beat you down. Sleep was measured in a couple of hours a night broken by the need to relieve your counterpart stand his watch.
I remember in my 10th month I was supposed to link up my platoon with the rest of the company in a heavily forested area separated by an open space at night. I arrived at about 1 am (0100) on time on my side of the space and then waited for the company. After two hours, I fell asleep. Now I don't mean that I fell asleep consciously. I mean I fell asleep because it was impossible to stay awake.
When the company commander finally arrived at the link up point, he couldn't get anyone on my radio to respond because my radio operator was also asleep.
So the company commander fired a machine gun over our position to wake us up. It was embarrassing but I will tell you that each and every night while in Vietnam after the first month, it was a real struggle to overcome the mental and physical exhaustion to stay awake even when your life was at risk.
Unless you've been in extended combat operating 24/7 for two months and sometimes more without rest, you have no idea what stress does to you. And that doesn't include (or maybe it does) the the stress of losing KIA and WIA. One day when the sun rose, I had about 34 Marines in my platoon. On that day when the sun set, Only four of us were still alive and unwounded.
You have no idea what continuous combat does on someone. I was lucky. I didn't suffer from PTDS. I don't know why. Maybe because I could stuff it down inside better than others. But so many of my Marines did suffer from PTSD. I may not have PTSD, but I have lived with it in one way or another for the rest of my life.
My distress from Vietnam is guilt. I'm now 74 and to this day I wonder if I had just made a different decision in combat if perhaps some of those wonderful Marines would have returned home to family, pizza, and beer. I know in my heart I tried to be a good and fair leader. But I was responsible for all of my Marines and at 74 I still grieve and wonder what I could have done differently.
I'll live with that until I die..... and then perhaps God will give me the truth one way or the other.
Sorry for the long post. But Vietnam triggers emotions and memories.
If you weren't in extended non-stop combat in the days where technology was based on WW II and the Koran War, then I doubt you could understand. Everything from knowing where you were to artillery to close air support was a crap shoot.
After a month in Vietnam, sleep was more than food, water, ammo, and even life. So hard to explain. You may not be able to understand what mental and physical exhaustion does to you over time---and it only gets worse the more time in combat you spend without rest.

I remember being pushed hard on exercise for a couple of weeks in the Australian army in the early 80s. Hardly a couple of hours sleep per night. I then drove an armoured vehicle with a gas mask on for several KMs running over a fence without me or the commander knowing. We also didn't realise we were running parallel with a 5 mt drop that would have rolled the vehicle and killed us.

Used to be doing meth, and my record of awake time was 5 days. I do believe at the day three or four your mind turns on you, focus increases but perception and attention decreases. I went for a short drive at the day four I saw a green shining ball is coming streight at my car, I dodged it and pulled over to investigate, and the only green light in the area was coming from a lamp of a kiosk nearby and its refelection on the wet street. the thoughts and paranoia is persistant and consistant to the next time you stay awake for long time agan.

I once had an exam which I could have started early on (were talking weeks), but I didnt start before I had about 45 hrs before deadline: I sat in a chair in front of a computer typing, thinking, and reading, barely ate, lots of energy drinks, too much ritalin (I got ADD). Remember I was really really stressed out, and hyper focused, no breaks, only to got to the bathroom, and there was also fear of the consequences of failing. I stayed up for 37+ hrs, before my brain basically shut down. The last hour of that period, I suddenly realised I had been re writing the same sentence for who knows how long, I just couldnt spell it, nor write it properly, even though I knew what I wanted to write. I wasnt ready to give up. Thought Ill lay down for 30 mins, and see if that helps. Every black dot on the walls looked like bugs crawling, a sock under my desk looked like a cockroach moving. And my backpack looked like it was melting. The sensation was really frightening, everything around me seemed to "pulse". Now Ive been up for 30+ hrs many times before that time, and after, and its not dangerous, but add in all the conditions I outlined, and it can be. A friend of mine was up for 65 hrs once, he isnt really a gamer, but he had a period where he got really addicted. He spoke about hallucinations aswell. Sleep deprivation certainly isnt healthy. PS: I fell asleep, no way I was in a state to finish, and the task was monumental. Had to take the exam one year later, did it properly that time.

The narrator is totally wrong about the part about you can’t stay up on meth for two weeks ! I am clean now ( only because of giving my life over to Jesus ) and the prayers of my mother , but when I was using meth I stayed up for 15 days . I was hallucinating badly with a paranoia that was so severe that I ran across the hwy in the middle of the night without even looking ran until I came to a small lake that was surrounded by trees because I thought there was people chasing me , trying to kill me ! I thought they had caught up to me because I had no where else to run , so I got on my knees and begged for my life for so long crying and yelling out please don’t kill me that I had not knowingly been kneeling on some rocks and they had worked there way inside my skin and I was bleeding profusely ! With all the strength I had I stood up and dove into the lake not knowing it was only a few feet deep and full of glass and some other stuff that was sharp and swam to the other side got out and ran into the first building I saw which happened to be the Exxon building right off of I35 in Dallas, I ran and dove over the counter right at the security desk ! Which all the personnel there left immediately because I was screaming someone’s trying to kill me ! I told him I was not leaving and to call the cops ! So this gas that you’re talking about I don’t think was gas I think they were giving them meth which is a lot stronger now than it was then ! Only by Gods love and grace was I able to stop or I would be dead now ! The more you use Seth the worse it gets a very small amount ( one 1/4 inch line ) will keep you up for two days without no problem ! I was shooting two grams at a time ! Bad , Bad stuff !!! Stay away from it !!! It only takes one time and your hooked !
