After Season 3 Episode 2 of The Owl House, a lot of fans are wondering why Belos pick Raine for his next target in possession. Are the writers just bullying Raine Whispers, or does their beef with Emperor Belos go way, way back to before Raine was even born? Is it possible Belos is just projecting his grudge towards Caleb and Evelyn onto Eda and Raine?

In the memory room, Camilla was looking at specifically the Grom fight photo where Grom turned into a version of Camilla. I think that was subtle foreshadowing of Camilla and Luz’s conversation when the egg hatches. Camilla sees herself in a monstrous form with Luz looking frightened, and she probably connected the dots of Luz being scared of her in some way, which prompts her further into apologizing about trying to change Luz

It’s horrifying how Belos just possesses one of the dead grimwalkers of Caleb, and casually say, "There’s gotta be atleast one still there." Like there just a toy ready to be thrown away.
It's just proof he'd done the same thing before.
That probably means he casually used dead grimwalkers when his body becomes too unstable.

Wait, this kinda makes sense. Only a SMALL amount of Belos goop entered the human realm, and he was able to rebuild his body after 3 months of possessing animals and deer. He targeted Hunter - a Grimwalker - in order to rebuild his body once and for all, but was only able to rebuild it to a sustainable amount because Hunter fought him off.

Belos probably picked Raine to get back at Eda, (and Luz), for revenge and for the turmoil of seeing someone Eda truly cares about being possessed by Belos! 💀
But if Belos catches Luz and caught and I think have an abomination form saving Luz and amity beats up Belos to death and Luz is saved

Belos didn't call Luz Evelyn - he was talking about Flapjack. I don't know if she somehow turned into a palisman or its just a last reminder of her because she carved him, but I'm sure that Belos saying "Good bye Evelyn" while squishing Flapjack is him talking to the bird - not Luz.

that bird was probably Evelyn’s. The bat queen said flapjack have been there are a really long time, so I’m assuming once Evelyn died he ran off to go live at the back queen
@@wren_. I think you're right about Flapjack being Evelyn's.... Which makes me think that maybe the yellow Cardinal that Dell (Eda's Dad) has may have belonged to (or was carved by) Caleb. We're already seeing all these tangled family ties, & Dell & Hunter even resemble each other a bit.
Lilith's tear bringing some consciousness back to hooty is probably a hint as to how to break raine and the others out of being a puppet (other than asking the collector nicely)
I agree and it would bring an emotional storm! And maybe change the collector as well as he sees the love Raine and Eda have for each other may spark feelings of wanting to be loved since he is in essence a dangerous but lonely child.
This should be called the tangled theory or the rapunzel theory
Personally I think that the main reason the writers choose Raine was to make the story more emotional. We all love Raine, and picking them would make the story hit harder. If they picked a character like Odialia, whom everyone hates, it wouldn't leave as great as effect.

Philip will always continue to believe that Caleb fell in love with a witch because he was under a spell that "tortured him against his will" and Philip as an advocate of euthanasia believed that killing him would free him from his "torture".

The thing i noticed is that Luz's Azura hat has a crown on it, which is similar shaped to the castle that in above the titan skull, aka a dead body. There's also the "foreshadowing" we saw in Thanks To Them, when Hunter and Luz walk up the stairs, Hunter's shadow has horns and Luz's shadow looks like she's stabbed. With these 2 informations, i am now very scared for the last episode and i hope that even if Luz dies, it'll be something similar to what happened to Anne in Amphibia. That being said, the little creature Luz saw in the in-between realm at the behinjng of For the Future might actually play a role in this.
I wonder as well! If you think about it, in the season 1 finale Eda almost died, in season 2 king got separated, makes me wonder what’ll happen to Luz-
Not going to lie, King has a higher chance of ending up in the realm between, and no, it's not because of being in that place looking like a titan aka Kings dad but the fact that he's the only one who accessed the realm between without needing a portal door.

One of my favourite details of the scene with Belos and Caleb, is that when Belos says "i tried to save your soul" the camera focuses specifically on the dagger above Caleb's head. Philip never saved his brother's soul, he just killed his brother and He Knows It. Belos and Caleb are some of my favourite characters ever.
There is an interest motif with hanging daggers in literature. The biggest one would be Damocles (the literal dagger hanging over someone head) There are also Sacrificial Daggers that are often depicted similarly.
Philíp's monstrous form reminds me of those things that guarded the place where King's egg was...could it be that someone merged Philip with one of those things and that is another of Philip's reasons to take revenge and destroy the boiling islands ?
Ehhh, that’s a bit of a long shot, but I like your creativity. Palisman magic is able to heal - as seen with Hunter and Flapjack - and we can only assume that Belos consumed so much Palisman in order to stay alive longer and keep his “curse” at bay. The enormous amount of Palisman he consumed ended up consuming his body in King’s Tide, and now that’s his permanent form.

I can't help but think that by the end of the series King will undergo a growth spurt and actually wear the castle crown. Rain is the perfect choice for Bellos. Possessing their body provides Bellos with a natural shield against Eda and company. So long as he has someone to redirect the collector's anger at, Bellos can bide his time till he can attempt to possess the collector.
I think that king Will release a percentage of his titán power but he Will not grow gigantic in an instant

I think that maybe there's also the fact that Raine is pretty much completely unconscious while in puppet form. After Belos possessed Hunter, Hunter was able to actually fight back, seemingly enough for Belos to straight up get ejected out of his body. Maybe Belos realized that, since Raine is literally a puppet right now, he doesn't have to worry about them fighting back, which might be another reason why he went for them instead of Odalia.
Considering they’ve been turned into a puppet, I’m not sure if Belos is eating up Raine on the inside like the earth animals and possibly hunter a little bit(because maybe those new scars were just from physical traumatization? Maybe Belos wasn’t eating hunter inside out, but his possession was just physically traumatizing?) Although, I do find it mildly strange how they still have the same voice, as opposed to just Belos’s voice. Because again, they were turned into a puppet and can only be controlled by the collector. Which reminds me, whoever Raine’s voice actor is, they are NAILING mimicking Belos’s vocal tone or whatever. You can really hear it at the end when they say “what will you do? Collector.”
I love how you can see how much Belos is struggling to hold himself together due to the lack of palismen.
Well that and probably the fact that I assume the Collector's attack that splatter him the first time did a lot of damage, not just physical damage, but psychological damage too, which no doubt makes it difficult for him to hold his form together.
I hope at the series finale they can save all palismen by killing belos, since belos is the reason why palismen trees are almost extinct at this point
Remember when Disney had actually good shows? The Owl House is so mid in comparison to Power Rangers RPM, they even did the "possessed a main character" trope better when Venjix possessed Operator Black.

@disperited soul. Who asked and who cares? Don’t try to put down another creators hard work to give yourself a short term ego boost as its pathetic and will mostly come crashing down as you’ll eventually get roasted.
When I watched this episode, I was so mad he didn’t pick Odalia but it made sense because they wouldn’t really have an issue with her, they’d likely eliminate Odalia but Raine is someone they care about. It adds the extra spice.
@Norski Box Plus Odalia might have decayed but raine was a puppet so it wont decay that fast or easily
The Owl House team probably wouldn't have a problem fighting Odalia but they would save her regardless because she is still Amity's mom despite her being a terrible parent and person.
These are my reasons why
1). Dana Terace wants us to cry
2). Belos wants Eda to suffer and by extension, Luz by targeting a loved one
3). Raine’s body seems to be the most active or automated of the ones available
4). Belos is aware of Raines prior attempts to ruin his plans and wants Raine to suffer.

Something some folks on twitter noticed that I thought was interesting was at the start of the episode when Lilith goes to try to rescue King from The Collector, she says to "get away from her nephew!" As soon as she says this, The Collector gets defensive. This could just be the kid being possessive but The Collector's also spent a very long time around Belos, and that means The Collector has seen a whole lot of what Belos does to his "nephews". Which makes me wonder if that could add to why The Collector got so protective!

Nah. Remember how The Collector was THAT happy when they talked with Belos about the death of previous Grimwalkers? They don't care about death or abuse in the justification of "Play". I say they were offended by the word "my" more . The collector a lonely kid with no one (last enough) to stay with him after all. That, and they must have thought Lilith was gonna steal their playmate.

It makes sense from a pragmatic standpoint. Belos knows that he'll have to face the group again, and Amity's hated mother would be beaten without hesitation, but Eda's beloved romantic partner would be someone that the heroes wouldn't want to get hurt or killed in the crossfire.

When I saw the episode, I thought that Belos picked Raine because he wanted a host that wouldn't resist him or try to get him out. His first humanoid one, hunter, almost got the both of them killed and the titan blood lost for the foreseeable future. This would also explain why we're only shown Belos possessing animals, and not humans, beforehand. He could have realized sentient (and concious) hosts could fight him off and picked one he could more easily control.
Probably as a hostage thing, "Oh you can't kill me, without killing them"
I even have this feeling that eda will end up doing that song again, but this time Raine won't stop it even if they could.
I always did find it a bit odd that Eda hasn't had an interaction with Belos directly since the S1 finale. Even in King's Tide despite being right there they never actually spoke to each other directly.
Now I realize they may have been saving that for this. Eda will have to confront Belos to free Raine, I think
I didn't think about it before, but a lot of his action do seem to be a kind of centuries long grudge against the Cawthorn family. Lilith herself admits at one point that she was not very good at her job. Which kind of make sense while she is very intelligent, she was never really much of a leader, and her loyalty to Belos came just from his promise to cure Eda, which he never had an intention of doing. When you compare her to master manipulators like Terra Snapdragon, or blindly loyal fallower like Kikimora, you kind of wonder we she was put in charge. Also why is she the one he keeps sending after Eda, besides having have failed a bunch of time, he's got to realize that theirs a part of her that's reluctant for a violent confrontation with her sister. Not to mention he seems kind of lenient with her failure, especially when you consider his reactions to Kiki's and Hunters. It kind of makes it look like his main reason for putting Lilith in charge of the emperor's coven (though even then she seemed kind subordinate to Kiki, and if later actions are anything to go by Terra was his closer to his de facto second in command), and sent her after Eda, was just to screw with them both. But probably especially Eda, as we see that she both looks more like, and probably has a similar personality to Evelyn. Also does clear up that contradiction of Belos not being able to dispose of Rain, because he doesn't have replacement for the coven heads, but then having back up for all of them. At first a saw this a somewhat typical attempt to cover up a plot hole, but it really does fit in with the context of being a larger revenge by proxy against Evelyn.
Because belos realized that he can manipulate the collector into trusting him by using one of his puppets he didn't choose Raine just because it's Raine he just saw one of the collectors puppets walking around and was like ok I'll use you the reason why I think the writers chose Raine to be possessed is probably just to make it more suspenseful
Another fun detail! In Belos's lab when he's looking for a grim walker to possess you can see a ribcage in the background. That's presumably all that's left of Caleb

What I saw was not only does the Collector's castle look like a crown, but it's floating above the titan's head, as in he was a king!
I also have a theory that the final episode's title is gonna start with "Watching" because if we look at the first words of the first two eps,

It spells out "Thank for watching!" Just like in the in the first two seasons when you could take the first letter of every episode and it would spell out a sentence.

I think you are spot on about why Eda’s curse flared up. I think that’s why Eda’s curse is uncontrollable when the collector is around. The owl beast is not gonna let that happen a second time and will keep fighting eda (at least until she talks with it).
I was pretty sure he was referring to flapjack as Evelyn but doesn't bode well for raine either way and I'm so scared. Also there's a chance raine may be fine because they are currently wood, since their a puppet there technically isn't any flesh to eat away.
I feel like they're trolling us by keeping Odalia alive.

You missed the way that Luz was pulling away from anything affectionate with Amity because she thought she was going to leave her in the end to go back to the human realm. It breaks my heart
I think it was just coincidence that he took over Raines body. The fact that Eda has a deep personal connection with Raine is just a bonus for Belos, but throughout the entire episode we see how desperate Belos was for a new body, he’s literally falling apart, he doesn’t have the luxury of being picky, so he took the first opportunity he saw.
Was waiting for someone to say that it was just random, because it really was. The writers might have strategically picked Raine for drama, but Belos just wanted a host, any host
@@ChrisRayPlays I get what you both say, but he was right in front of Odalia and then circled around her to get to Raine, calling them "perfect" to become his host if I recall correctly...? So, yeah, Belos was in a bit of a pickle, but he did not seem as if possessing Raine was him merely making due. At the time I thought it might have been because puppetified Raine may have been less fragile and therefore the better choice but then Raine leaked the ooze right after...
@@ChrisRayPlays the fact that Odalia was right there and willing and he STILL picked Raine to me implies it wasn't random. Picking a puppet immediately flagged the Collector's suspicion anyway, so Odalia would have actually been a better choice on the surface, she was even willing to have it happen lol. Belos definitely picked Raine for a reason. And like a lot of people have said, Eda and the crew's personal collection to Raine would be a bonus for Belos in the final conflict. From a writing standpoint, Raine is also a character the fans love and who is more important as a side character than Odalia and a lot of other non-mains, so they probably also wanted them to be directly involved in the final showdown in a more active way.
@@Lisa_Flowers You also have to think about his first action after puppeting Raine- it was to immediately go find the Collector to try and do the same thing; he wasn't planning on keeping Raine as his body at all. The only reason he's still using Raine ATM, is because the collector jumped out of the way and Philip made up a lie on the spot to manipulate the collector away from being suspicious of him.
@@UnluckySuperstition but from a writers standpoint, they probably did this for an emotional stance since they didn't immediately take over the collectors body. And Dana doesn't rlly do the whole happy ending thing so my theory is that Raine might get hurt for good.

Notice how Raine sheds a tear disguised as Belos goop coming from their eye. They know what's happening 😭 I'm wondering if Eda might have been able to communicate with Raine unknowingly. We saw how Lilith's tear (from her cursed eye) was able to kind of bring Hooty back a little. Maybe Raine has been able to hear Eda. What if the Owl Beast is able to help defeat the Collector how Titans can?? 👀🤔

What I’m curious about is WHO did Luz see in that portal zone thingy. You know, when she was coming from Earth to the Boiling Isles
the main guess right now is "the soul of the Boiling Isles titan"
@@megamegatron99 I think it's definitely a Titan, but a different (notably smaller) subspecies than the one that makes up the Boiling Isles. It's features & proportions more closely resemble King's species. Perhaps when the Collector was sealed away in the in-between by the Titans, they decided to leave one of their own behind to guard/observe him.
Seeing as the Titans had a magic written language capable of concealment, preventing them from being detected by Collectors specifically...It could be easily explained why TC never realized there was a Titan in there with him all that time.
I think it was an act of desperation as he jumped to the closest puppet in the area. But in terms of story it makes perfect since great job with the description as why.
The way I see it, the last time Belos possessed someone (Hunter), they were in control of their own body beforehand, and fought back for control.
Raine was already a prisoner within their own body, so they're less likely to resist Belos' control.

I think he picked Raine more for plot purposes. What with Hooty managing to communicate with Lilith, showing the puppets are still conscious in there, I think it’s more that, especially with their history of resisting mind control, Raine will fight back against Belos, probably at a critical moment. Will there be magical healing tears? Will there be true love’s kiss? Both options were foreshadowed by Lilith’s tears seemingly ‘awakening’ Hooty (probably a red herring though) and the repeated references to a true loves kiss between Luz and Hunter that may finally pay off between Eda and Raine. Even better if Raine had been communicating with Eda like Hooty managed to, given how unsurprised she was when Hooty spoke.
Mad respect for being transparent about the sale not working out, a lot of creators would have just made a community post or not mentioned it. It's nice to see that y'all really care about the fans and not how much money you guys can make 👍

Another detail you would've liked to talk about was that in the photo room, Willow was able to pull memories of most of Luz's actions that are most likely the cause of her own trauma and guilt which all cloud her judgement.
The book the collector has king read is actually written by the other collectors.
edit: also, haven't you noticed that when Belos possessed puppet Raine, he was able to speak in her voice and not his voice, so the collector wouldn't recognise him and kick his ass again.

After the day of unity, belos knew eda the owl lady was close enough to raine to take his place and risk her life. I think he’s planning to use this against her specifically. I can’t wait for the next to come out but I also don’t want the series to end just yet. There were so many moments we could have had if it wasn’t cut short.

not to mention Gwendolyn too. seems like the Clawthornes have a naming scheme (not including Lilith)
Something that you forgot to mention in the breakdown, although this isn’t a hidden detail. But it’s actually the fact that thank goodness Kikimora showed up right when Luz was about to tell Amity her plan to stay in the Human Realm, because if she didn’t, well, you know how that would’ve turned out.

When I saw rain get possessed in this episode I literally screamed "NO NOT RAIN" out loud
Thing you may have missed: I spotted a small detail in the scene where Odalia is dragging puppets around, when she sees the coven heads and gets the idea to use them for labor - among all the pictures on the walls, there's _one_ that's torn up and partially destroyed. I assume this was done by The Collector, who didn't like what it depicts, as it seems to be the start of eradication of the Titans, who he just wants to be friends with.
The way Belos always has countermeasures in order to ruin the lives of Evelyn's descendants kinda reminds me of Master Xehanort - always having a plan for every possible situation. If the people are still alive while in puppet form (Hooty was a great example of this), maybe the only solution to save everyone is by bonds of love/family - I can see that happening with:
- Eda freeing Raine
- Hunter freeing Darius
- Gus, Willow and Amity freeing their parents
- Luz freeing Camila (I have a feeling this will happen in the finale)
Something I noticed is that Azura's/Luz's outfit looks a lot like the collector's. The purple and white, the stars, the crown on her hat looking like the Archive. I also think it's interesting that Luz has the star symbol, now and when she wore Eda's jacket, while Amity's symbol is the moon.
also, I realized just now what the nails on the little puppet show that show up at 1:16 are EXACTLY like Eda's
Also!! the whole "there is only one spot open for the emperor's coven" when eda and lilith were trying to get in mightve been set up on purpose by belos when he would out that lilith and eda were the strongest witches that would probably make it in. just an idea!
Because the writers knew that we'd want Belos to pick Odallia, so they defied our wishes and picked someone we have attachment to.

So the Collector that turned the owl beast into a scroll was actually preserving it as part of it's mission. I wonder if the curse aspect was part of the Collector's plan or just an unintended consequence. I think the owl beast itself is going to have a bigger role in the resolution of the story. And the fact that when Eda & the beast finally got together we saw a red thread connecting the two. In legends, the invisible red thread is often said to connect people who are destined to meet or lovers, which makes me believe that the beast may be somehow also tied (no pun) to Raine in some way.

I’m actually excited about episode 3’s main conflict between the main cast and The Collector being caused by miscommunication. I agree that miscommunication conflicts are tired and frankly stupid (why don’t people just listen to each other?!?), but this one is very particular with how it was set up.
See, Belos is a master manipulator. His grudge against all witch kind stems from his hatred of Evelyn in particular, so over the course of history he got better and better at honing his communication abilities. So much so that he can now manipulate anyone like a puppet (Kikimora, Lilith, Golden Guard, and now Raine). His manipulation has been the driving force of conflict for hundreds of years.
From manipulating Raine to be put in the exact position that would result in their puppification, all the way to using Raine as a host in order to get closer to The Collector, Belos has been pulling the strings all this time.
So what better way to enforce one final act of conflict than manipulating the Collector once more to do his bidding? Belos has always been a weakling, but his power comes from his way with words. The Collector could have snapped his strings right then and there in the planetoid bedroom, but Belos talked “sense to them”. Belos took a gamble with telling them to spy on King. When the Collector said “see, I told you he wouldn’t betray me”, Belos simply said “look again”.
Belos has been playing with words against the forces of magic for hundreds of years, so he knows how to handle magical beings. The final conflict isn’t just because of miscommunication, it’s because Belos knows exactly how to misuse communication to his benefit, even when he isn’t the one sitting on the throne.
Belos is the final conflict. He was always the source of conflict. Always the one pulling the strings.
personally. I don't think it was about raine at all. belos saw a literal puppet in front of him and said that would do nicely, and raine was active when he possessed them so he obviously would go after the active one and not one of the disabled ones. + puppets (I imagine) can't deteriorate like flesh can in this situation so they are more durable and less likely to fall apart from him possessing them
I think that the reason that Belos just choose the first puppet that he saw activated(maybe the deactivated ones were too hard to possess)/ the first coven head that he found. Rain was the only active coven head in the entrance area because Odilia was using them to move the other puppets(deactivated). Also Raine was the first puppet that Belos saw and similar to the grim walker where he jumped into the only empty body he could of been desperate.

Another reason, If Eda and Lilith are related to Evelyn, it means Belos is related to them as well. Because of that, he probably views that as abominations that shouldn’t exist, a disgusting blight upon his “family.” They only exist because of Caleb and Evelyn, and he wants to rid the final influence of Evelyn’s insidious influence from the world once and for all, and clean his linage of witches. What better way to get to them other than Raine?

Universal theorie on T.O.H. and S.V.T.F.O.E.
Considdering That Star's cheaks are hearts and Marco's cheaks are quarter moons, and in the collector's book there is the svtfoe reference, and the Collector is a Child from the stars. I'd say that when Star and Marco fused their dimentions together, creating a magical cloud with a big bang, they accidentally created (though time and space) in the T.O.H. universe The Collector. So hé is a child from the stars and is allso Star's Child.

I think is beacuse Raine was in puppet form and "preserved" by the Collector's magic and would be the perfect body for him , beacuse it would not rot away with him inside it
I mean even if Belos tries body jacking the collector and the collector would end up fine to some degree after forcing Belos out of their body, then let's assume when the collector understands, they'll heal Raine especially for Eda.
Im sure someone else has figured this out but... what if the reason caleb looks malnurished is because phillip kidnapped him and used the ilses limited food to try and manipulate caleb to return to the human realm. Of course it wouldnt work so phillips plan B was to kill caleb sense, in phillips mind, he was too far currupted by Evelyn.
Another theory is that Belos chose Raine because their body isn't organic at the moment and he doesn't have to worry about it breaking down like it would if it was living 🤷♂️.
I like this theory, and it seems plausible and might be part of it, but to me, it seems likely he needs a strong witch/body to take over, and that he likely would have picked any of the coven leaders if they were there instead of Raine, and would have skipped Odalia no matter what
I think another reason is that he can get close enough to the collector in order to eventually poses the collector
