All the coven heads have this weird, ironic quality to them and the choice to give Raine *stage fright* despite their aplomb and clear self possession was so great.
People with anxiety often are ruthless and stone cold when the situation calls for it. being afraid of everything and then still functioning means when someone or something that terrifies the people who haven't lived in fear their entire life comes along the person to whom fear is an old friend can act despite that fear because they are used to being afraid. when the chips are down? the person with anxiety is the person that will not be stopped. when the chips are down the person with anxiety fears nothing not even god. because they are so terrified they cannot feel anything at all.

! Spoilers for Watching and Dreaming ! Raine is especially scary in this episode- not only do they break the Collector's curse, but also was strong enough to throw Belos out of control of their body. This kind of strength is UNREAL, especially after seeing how much it took for Hunter to overcome Belos' possession (he DIED). Hell, Belos even comments on how he always hated how strong they are, which just gives an insight on how even he would have trouble going against Raine. Absolutely a ruthless but loving character.
@@emrysrainejackson7242 he is also a magic less child. Raine has had longer to perfect their art and has something to draw on he doesn't, as hard as he tries to stop Belos, even through self sacrifice.
Another thing i love is how raine's ruthlessness doesn't necessarily translate to them being heartless. When asking for eda's help, they specify "if you have nothing to lose" and don't ask anything of her just yet. They're letting her know what she's getting herself into beforehand, instead of springing the sacrifice play on her later on. Then when playing the requiem, they mention, "we may not make it out ourselves", and there's an implication of "but you already knew that". Because, again, they made sure she knew what she was signing up for. Alternatively, i think they could have been giving eda one last chance to back out. Granted, i don't know what they would have done if she had, but it's still an acknowledgement that this sacrifice is a massive ask from them. Even if they think that eda has nothing to lose if they go through with it. They still obviously care deeply about eda, to the point where they almost seem regretful over asking such a big favour from her (again) with the sigil, but it takes an incredibly strong person to not put personal attachments in front of their cause. They want to keep eda safe but not at the cost of the entire boiling isles. Ruthlessness has not made them uncaring or cruel, they're just willing to make sacrifices, even if they're not their own. Fantastic video! This entire thing was so thorough and well put-together, i was astounded to realise it was only 10 minutes. This whole channel is full of nothing but gems.
They ask to do all these things on the razor's edge of tension, keeping in mind that they have anxiety! It's unfathomable the level of muscling through they've done.
@@idlescree A quote from Animorphs that I think perfectly encapsulates ruthlessness; ""People don't understand the word ruthless. They think it means 'mean.' It's not about being mean. It's about seeing the bright, clear line that leads from A to B. The line that goes from motive to means. Beginning to end. It's about seeing that bright, clear line and not caring about anything but the beautiful fact that you can see the solution. Not caring about anything else but the perfection of it."" I think that encapsulates this mode of action beautifully. It shows the exact meaning of ruthlessness without cruelty. This character in that series is one of my favorites, simply because he knows how to win, and is willing to pay the price, but he still has emotions and conflicts, he isn't some heartless monster of callousness.
To add another layer to their deception: clearly, they are a fantastic actor (so long as they're not on a stage). But the best liars convince you that they're terrible liars, and even the people who saw their betrayal (Darius and Eber) said "we didn't tell you about our plan because you're a bad liar." Just think about that one.
@@kalifogg6610 oh hell yeah they did!! love that show, and Raine is absolutely like that. Incredibly skilled in espionage, horrendous on a stage. Sophie's a great character (not nearly as dear to my heart as Raine, though)
@@arzadu1138 my favorite part is when we first meet her and Hardison, Parker and Eliot are horrified that Nate wants to recruit her. And her overly dramatic performance for the soap commercial audition is so funny. Rains and Sophie would be besties.
@@kalifogg6610 And so would Raine and Ned Stark. Like, when both of them bullshit, they bullshit with so straight a face that you won't think they're bullshitting.
Something else is Raines power of deception. I mean they managed to deceive everyone except Darius (and probably Eberwolf) following the "brainwashing." Raine deceived everyone by making everyone think they were brainwashed even the person who was doing this (Terra.) Now that takes massive skill and makes Raine even more complex and powerful
Certainly. It's unsure at what point Terra caught on but Raine made quite a game of it. There's plenty more to talk about when it comes to Raine for sure but man I just know they're not an enemy I'd like to have. Of the adult characters who aren't Belos, I'd consider Raine easily one of, if not THE most dangerous. I feel like with almost all of the heroic ones they're the one that would be least inclined to mercy if the stakes were high enough! Thanks for the comment :D
@Idle Scree I'm still deciding when I think Terra caught on tbh but I am thinking it was in the few days before the Day Of Unity just when I'm not sure. Raine most certainly did a great job at hiding it though. Raines someone with so much to talk about especially after how strong they're shown to be in the finale. It really makes me wish we saw more of them (although I feel that way about all Coven heads.) If I had Raine as an enemy I'd certainly sleep with one eye open. I'm not sure who I consider the most dangerous adult characters outside of Belos but I imagine Raine would be up there if I made a list. They definitely weren't inclined to mercy in the finale but I cant say I blame them (I'm trying to be careful what I say for anyone who hasn't seen it that's why I'm wording it so vaguely 😅) No problemo :D Thank you for the amazing video

4:55 [SPOILERS FOR WAD] there’s a running theory that Raine did have a palisman the whole time, they just disguised it as their violin! We see them with a fox palisman towards the end of the episode, which looks similar to the design at the end of their violin!
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that 😂💕 I didn't think that Raine had a palisman until the end of Watching and Dreaming and that they just used their violin instead. But the theory that they did have one before anc had to sacrifice it to Belos for yhe good of the rebellion is both really sad (and dark) and makes me love their character even more x 💕🎻✨️

@@Manas-co8wlyeah, but if the moment is put off you have a better chance to escape, especially if the person is too busy enjoying it to pay much attention
HELL yeah. Raine is stone cold. Raine used to be a teacher! Someone specifically in a position to be looking for signs of abuse- i can hardly imagine how much it must have hurt to see hunter, know they couldn't do anything to help him, and have to watch in silence because the best way to help him was to defeat the emperor. Though, I have no doubt that if Hunter had fought Raine and forced their hand, they'd have been prepared to take him down for the good of the mission, and there's no way Eda could ever do that, even if it meant way more people getting hurt. raine whispers fucking rules
RIGHT. A teacher, someone who is so perceptive--it just boggled my mind even on the first watch. And they were capable of a pretty crazy "stand" against Eda while pretending at mind control in addition to everything else. They had to become so metal despite the fact that really good teachers have a warm, soft core of compassion and kindness...And yeah, I didn't go into this in great detail here but they would absolutely have been prepared to take Hunter down if they had to. Weeps. Thank you for the lovely comment.
It’s extremely good that Raine is on the side of good because if they were on Belos’s side the boiling isles would have been lost before Luz ever set foot on it
Belos didn't consume Raine's palisman. In one episode (can't recall wich one) a we see a paper with data about them, and it sais "Palisman: unknown". If Belos coonsumed their palisman the status would be different
Someone mentioned that in the epilogue Raine has a little fox palisman, and their violin's head is carved in the shape of a fox, so the palisman was probably disguised as the violin the whole time!
BELOS GOT SO SLOPPY with Hunter it's wildly ridiculous. Abusers have to be SO confident to be leaving marks on a child's FACE and the EC's uniform includes a white cloak! Blood and injury would be so apparent!
It’s even worse when you realize that Raine might have had to abuse the kids himself for appearance sake. Hunter says that Coven Heads backstab each other all the time for their own wants and needs, likely including him. If Raine really wanted to show that he fit in, he likely did something unforgivable to the kid himself just to keep appearances
It’s possible that rain hid their palisman or kept them far away from the castle because they had a fox during the ending of Watching and Dreaming. This could be a new palisman but I think they had their fox for a while as they seem really comfortable flying on them.
Interestingly enough, their instrument’s head is also fox. This could mean that they had their palisman disguised as their instrument right under Belos’ nose the whole time!
@@sharkfin4194 I remember someone saying that their palisman could be the neck up of their instrument, meaning as long as that was intact, their palisman was fine. It makes sense considering the two times we see it broken, it's always the body
Raine kept their palisman hidden right under Belos' nose, their staff transformed into their violin. Which makes them breaking their violin to try to stop Belos from possessing the Titan's Heart all the more heartbreaking.
Loved this!! Raine is such a complex character and it’s great to see them getting some recognition for how much of a stone cold badass they can be. they’re a revolutionary!! ok I’m gonna rewatch the video now
I LOVED this video essay. Raine has always been one of my favorite characters but I’ve never really been able to put my finger on why. I always just said they had a quiet sort of strength which was certainly part of the equation. I’ve been able to point out moments that resonated with me. The reveal that Raine has been faking their submission to Tera while completely cognizant and actively rebelling the whole time. Raine’s sympathetic look at Hunter in Any Sport in a Storm while still reluctantly but willingly following the other coven heads. Their entire motivation being to keep Eda safe, but failing over and over again. Their character is constantly at odds with itself but it actually works to make them a more believable person. After everything they’ve been through, I’m glad they’re the one who was possessed by Belos. Every coven head has sacrificed so much (just consider the chances that Darius knew *something* about Belos’s grimwalkers), but Raine is the one we learn the most about. For so much of their lives, they’ve been complicit in Belos’s plans. Them being possessed is the physical manifestation of all their struggles. And also gives them the opportunity to overcome them.
Wow, this is a really great observation! The note that they keep trying to protect Eda and failing over and over, and how their contradictions come together to make a really believable person. Absolutely loved this. I've meditated a lot on what the coven heads know...Thank you for for this comment, and thanks so much for watching!
Oooh, I didnt think about raine getting possesed as a physical manifestation of all their struggles, but it definetly makes sense, and adds a reason storywise to why it was them, and not one of the other rebellion members. I was pretty upset that they got possessd, calling them the writers' punching bag as a half joke, but you shed some light on it! Thank you!
I like how you brought up Raine noticing Hunter’s abuse. I have a little fan theory that Raine, Darius, and Eber Wolf knew the golden guard before Hunter. For me personally it would make sense why the three decided to rebel together, we already know that Darius was hurt by the previous guard’s death and showed distain towards Hunter following Belos blindly, but giving their ages and Hunter’s age it could work. Obviously not much can support this theory besides the interactions we’ve seen between the three, we don’t know how long the rebellion has been in motion, but for me personally it feels like an interesting way to connect these characters instead of just small, yet significant, interactions between.
i wanna add something about the moment when Raine pulls Eda's hand (sorry if any of this sounds scuffed, english is not my native language) so what i wanna talk about is their "last" words "I promised a special kid i will protect you" they knew they probably wont make it out alive. it was their last words. they chose this words, not "i love you" or smth why? so, after "Eda's requiem" they were determined to keep Eda safe. they knew she will go on a suicide mission if needed. and she went to confront Darius and Eberwolf with Raine in the first place because she thought her kids didn't love her so the thing they decided to tell is to reassure her, that she has people to lose, that they love her, that they specifically went to ask Raine to protect her. they made sure she wont try to kill herself again but anyway they are alive and gay so thats okay 😊 /insert the Raine seeing Harpy Eda scene with happy kids music/
Thank you, upon rewatching the fight between them and Eda where Raine tells Eda to back away "please", you see Raine's face and it screams of "I don't want to hurt you". Now knowing that they were not under Terra's control puts it in a different light.
when Eda got her sigil I thought how is raine just letting this happen cause I not used to characters like them. With this understanding I love their ruthlessness. (spoilers for fanale) aaaa aaaaaa aaaaa aaaa aaaa aaa aaa aaa aaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!! I think Raine might have ended up chronicly injured from the possesion, we see them fighting for a longer time than Hunter and their possessed for longer. We see their body giving in as things go on. Even Belos says they're annoyingly powerful that just adds to this side of them.
They're quite unique! It's rare to see a character like this depicted in such a stark fashion on a kid's show--and they let it stand without commentary which is partly for time but also a very bold move. Thank you for your comment, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! :D

THIS! i know Raine is loved by the fandom, but i still consider them to be underrated for many of these reasons! Raine’s personality, ambition, determination, sacrifice - practically everything about them makes them one of my favorite characters in the show
I love Raine ❤ that's all I really have to say. That and the fact I was happy they gave them anxiety but still made them an incredibly strong, tough character outside of that. Similar to Hunter, although not quite the same thing.
FINALLY a video that gives Raine the appreciation they deserve! I hadn't even thought about some of the things you mentioned and I have analyzed them HARD (and now I feel even worse for them :') ) People tend to perceive them as some anxious wimp rebel-wannabe and miss literally EVERYTHING about their character. I love Raine so much for literally every reason you mentioned and more and it pisses me off so much when people miss literally everything that makes Raine Raine. I've been looking for a video like this, thank you for giving them the analysis they deserve. they are one of my top favourites and one of the ones I look up to most for a reason
Yeah u hit the nail right on the head Raine demonstrates the lengths u need to be willing to go through to pull off a successful rebellion. Also yeah not only would Eda not be able to do what Raine did but I think Luz would also be in the same boat like Eda Luz can't stand seeing unjust actions fall people like Hunter.
It turns out that raines palisman might have been their violin the whole time, just hidden away, because their palisman in the end of the newest episode was a fox, just like then neck of their violin
Wow! You definitely made me appreciate Raine’s character a lot more with this. Funny enough the themes of sacrificing your own morality for the greater good is something that’s just come up in my philosophy class! Definitely going to be thinking about this during those discussions :)
I honestly need to rewatch the show sometime to better appreciate these characters better because they are really well crafted. Also it amuses me to no end that my middle name is actually Raine and was considering making it my first in my hunt for a new name years ago before Owl House. We would have been nonbinary name buddies, an massive honor. But hey, I still get that honor regardless in the end.
Honestly, i was very skeptical when i first started the vid because i only ever thought of Raine as just some nice side character with some social anxiety who wanted to rebel against Belos, but GOD DAMN, u made some rlly great points. Good job!! :D
Thank you! It's a very high compliment, I love it when people bring their skepticism to something I have to say. I'm glad you enjoyed :D And yeah I remember Raine's cold ruthlessness was quite striking but not a lot of people were discussing it so I thought I'd offer my two cents on why I think they're so cool (and DEEPLY dangerous).
Afterward it's been confirmed raine didn't give belos their palisman, that their violin(?) is their palisman, but that just adds another layer of sacrifice. That in the finale raine, with very little hesitation, smashed their own palisman in hopes of stopping belos from accessing the titan's heart. I think we got confirmation that their palisman was able to recover from that but holy cow that moment shows that raine really will sacrifice anything.
This analysis of Rain makes me think of them on a while different light. Like. I had respect for them before. But I have even more so now. Given how strong they would have had to been to do all of this. This made me tear up ngl. It may be because the series just ended but still. This video is amazing.
I like that in the final *spoilers ahead* they are so powerful that belos was annoyed about it hell they broke out of a spell that the *Collector* placed on them!
Dude, I love video essays like these. You brilliantly summarized a character that hasn't been executed in this medium before, or at least, none that I can recall. You are awesome, thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Ever since in Season 3, even Belos also said something about them saying how he hates how annoyingly strong they are and that's when u know raine compared to belos saying that is really intimidating but also badass
Oooh great analysis! I love Raine and you did them such justice here Something that I find really interesting about this is that, on the Day of Unity, when the fight breaks out between the coven heads, Darius joins in, UNTIL- Eberwolf is threatened, and he surrenders. Unlike Raine, Darius holds strong attachments to others (regardless of how much he pretends not to), and by backing down, Darius ruins any chance they had of stopping the Draining Spell. Although obviously the Collector intervened and stopped it anyway, this is something I could see Raine actually getting really angry at Darius for...
Thank you! I think about this constantly. Darius for all his posturing I don't think is capable of the kind of ruthlessness Raine is XD He's pettier than they are but yeah. I dont really see him as a killer. That freeze there was instinct.
I love this video!! Literally all of this is so true, and is reinforced wholesale in the Owl House's spectacular, if slightly premature, final. Raine shines in s3e3, resisting Belos' possession of them both physically and mentally, enforcing not only their strength of will, but also their magical prowess. Even BELOS admits that Raine "was always annoyingly powerful." FR. Raine is just such an awesome character, and you did an awesome job analyzing their character! Props!!
You also forgot the amazing detail that the only reason Raine didn't die when Belos took control of the Titan was because they were whistling the "malice" away from them.
im so happy we see raine has a palisman in WaD, and somehting that I HC, is that their violin IS their pallisman, as you can see the head of a fox on it.
That's a great HC! I knew the odds of me being potentially wrong on that point were HIGH, and while one cannot prove a negative, it's certainly a good theory!
Pretty certain that if Owl House was around when I was a kid, and I looked up to Raine as much as I do now, I would have figured out that I’m non-binary a lot sooner and been more confident about it. Not in an attempt to be more like them, but to understand what it is I see and hope for in myself, thanks to the many lessons this series presents
Yeah!! This kind of representative fiction is INCREDIBLY powerful! I am so grateful that the kids of today have this, and those of us who are post-kid get to appreciate it for what it is now!
Same! Like I'm definitely in a spot where I both want to be Raine and want to be _with_ Raine cause they're just so cool in a way I can't explain but they would have definitely also helped me realize I was non-binary too XD
Something that I don't see people point out enough: when Raine learns Eda has kids but she dismisses them. Raine was a _teacher._ They probably know better than most that just because you're not blood doesn't mean you're not family, and how important mentors are to their students.
Raine is one of those characters I wished existed more often, that morally gray dubiousness all for the sake of a greater goal, and NOT being felt as the bad guy, is always a beloved breath of fresh air. I can only name a few characters who gave the same vibe, and even they don't come anywhere close to as agreeable to me in their decisions as Raine because usually there's some form of cowardice holding them back too. Raine didn't have that.
The coven system is so STUPId it's so clearly stupid and it makes no SENSE and that's the point but oh my GODHSFLDSFALSKGJ GLK and you're absolutely right
Rain didn’t give up his palisman though, it’s his violin, expertly hidden from Belos by staying in that form while hidden away unless battle or play is required.
a thing i always thought about with raine's magic that i haven't seen mentioned is that they can make forcefields, lightning storms, neutralize terra's poison, neutralize spells, control people's limbs, etc. with just *one note*. not even a chord or anything, just a whistle or an open string pizz is enough to match coven scouts and eda in a fight. what's going to happen when they play an actual piece?? the boiling isles explode??
i believe raine’s palisman is heavily implied to be their instrument, with (spoilers) context from watching and dreaming. i think they hid their palisman from belos via disguising it as a magical instrument
this video reminded me of a fantasy book series that also has quite the emphasis on sacrifice and greater good vs. personal attachment. (a fuckton of spoilers for Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. i dont even know why i made this comment.) Eda reminds me a lot of Aelin, and Raine reminds me a lot of Dorian. Aelin has a fate to sacrifice all of her magic and her self to forge the Lock and put it into place to seal the three Wyrdkeys into the Wyrdgate. This is purely because of an ancient debt caused by the mistake of Elena in her efforts to defeat the Valg king Erawan. Because Aelin has godly fire magic and blood relation to Elena, she is eligible to forge the Lock. But Dorian also has a blood relation to Elena, and godly raw magic(raw magic is the ability to make your magic take any form you need or want). He has both requirements as well, but the only difference is he has nothing to lose and a lot more pain. Aelin has been through a lot in her 19 years on Erilea, but through all of the torture and pain she found family and love and caring friends in Dorian, Chaol, Rowan, Fenrys, Elide, and Lysandra to name a few. She had people to help her heal from child abuse, the labor camp, being forced to work for a tyrant, waking up covered in her parents' blood, etc. But Dorian, being the son of a tyrannical king, hasn't been able to find that many people. The only person being Chaol for the longest time, and when chaos was brought to his doorstep via Aelin, he finally found a lot of friends. But even then he didnt let himself get too close to them after being possessed by a Valg Prince and having an identity crisis because while being possessed he learned to like hurting innocent people. So Dorian tried to take Aelins place in forging the Lock, even though Aelin (now being reasonably suicidal) came up with a plan to fulfill everyones wishes, keeping everyone she cares about safe, and forging almost the entirety of the Lock. The only reason they're both alive now is Aelins plan, and two strokes of luck one of them being a very anti-climactic reveal. Just like Raine, Dorian had nothing to lose. And just like Eda, Aelin was fine with ending herself for the greater good even if other people depended on her.
Spoilers for the finale: I hope that’s enough to hide it. Belos actually complains about how powerful Raine is. They are just that much of a threat even with all of the restrictions and only barely failed to prevent the tyrants plan one their own. I would not want to be on their bad side even in Mario Party.

I could just imagine the chill on the kids' spines if Raine saved them from any large threat like Kikimora. I wouldn't doubt in second to last episode, Raine would've done a simple draw on the bowstring and cut Kiki's head clean off her body.
That would explain Odalia's absence in the timeskip - Raine very likely did kill her, eventually. Odalia tried something dumb and ended up facing the lion, instead of the fox - Raine is, after all, as much lion as fox.

Yea Raine is the only thing to survive belos possession
Also, they didn’t have to give up their palismen
@@isabellagoldleaf1751 Yeah, disguising their palisman as their violin was genius, assuming that theory is correct of course
I think the reason Hunter almost died when he was possessed by bellows is because he jumped in the water and almost drowned
Thank you for the thoughtful comment! I love that, "ruthless, but not heartless." What a great way to phrase that!
They ask to do all these things on the razor's edge of tension, keeping in mind that they have anxiety! It's unfathomable the level of muscling through they've done.
You deserve these likes, you just wrote a small essay
Agreed "ruthless, but not heartless"
@@idlescree A quote from Animorphs that I think perfectly encapsulates ruthlessness;
""People don't understand the word ruthless. They think it means 'mean.' It's not about being mean. It's about seeing the bright, clear line that leads from A to B. The line that goes from motive to means. Beginning to end. It's about seeing that bright, clear line and not caring about anything but the beautiful fact that you can see the solution. Not caring about anything else but the perfection of it.""
I think that encapsulates this mode of action beautifully. It shows the exact meaning of ruthlessness without cruelty. This character in that series is one of my favorites, simply because he knows how to win, and is willing
to pay the price, but he still has emotions and conflicts, he isn't some heartless monster of callousness.
Truth and silence lie better than even the silvermost tongue.
Leverage has a Grifter who’s terrible as a regular actress, way too dramatic, but she’s basically flawless when she’s running a con or in on a con.
Eda is a dissenter, Raine is a revolutionary
Oh this is a fabulous way to sum it up!!
Are you really bringing up Hogwarts houses? About a NB chracter? Fckin YIKES. Harry Potter adults learn to let go of racist childrens books written by a transphobe challenge
Don't know how Darius called him a bad actor

Belos even admitted himself that "raine is ANNOYINGLY POWERFUL"
Yeah, our powerful badass bard 🥰
Well I'm not sure what Belos was expecting, he literally recruited the "baddest, coolest, kick-buttiest witch of all time" 😂
Plus their palisman is a fox in the time skip😭😭❤
It's been confirmed now

Can we just notice the genius that Raine is a whistleblower? What a PERFECT allegory!
😮❤❤
Raine fits the "good man(person)" quote from Pratchett. "If you have to look along the shaft of an arrow from the wrong end, if a man has you entirely at his mercy, then hope like hell that man is an evil man. Because the evil like power, power over people, and they want to see you in fear. They want you to know you're going to die. So they'll talk. They'll gloat. They'll watch you squirm. They'll put off the moment of murder like another man will put off a good cigar.
So hope like hell your captor is an evil man. A good man will kill you with hardly a word."
Raine is a good person.
Off topic but I'd... rather die immediately, thank you...
I didn't realize it was possible to love Raine even more, but after this video I do
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Same 😂💕🎻
It’s extremely good that Raine is on the side of good because if they were on Belos’s side the boiling isles would have been lost before Luz ever set foot on it
Yeah, bad people need their enablers and it's good that Raine wasn't motivated in the way some of the other coven heads clearly were...
@@mimicmey:0 like the princples palisman becoming his hat?
I DIDN'T EVEN THINK ABOUT RAINE POTENTIALLY KNOWING ABOUT HUNTER'S SITUATION OH MY GOD
@@frankwest5388raine uses they/them pronouns

Raines palisman has been confirmed to be hidden in the violin
Raine kept their palisman hidden right under Belos' nose, their staff transformed into their violin. Which makes them breaking their violin to try to stop Belos from possessing the Titan's Heart all the more heartbreaking.
Loved this!! Raine is such a complex character and it’s great to see them getting some recognition for how much of a stone cold badass they can be. they’re a revolutionary!! ok I’m gonna rewatch the video now
Aaah thank you. I love Raine and their sharp edges. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Eda: strong but shows mercy
Raine: strong but cant risk mercy..
Man so many of you are full of such pithy, powerful statements and I am HERE for it. Absolutely love that.
Raine was always so intelligent. I only noticed in the end when Raine was shown to have a palisman, but hid it as a violin which I found mind blowing.
SO many ways to look at it--absolutely amazing stuff. They're such an incredible character.
Thank you!
A very intriguing observation 🤔 now I understand why it was Raine who got possessed by Belos, thx for that 😂💕
You made me realize that Raine is wayyy stronger than they look like. And the fact that now Belos has those abilities makes it even worst
Eda being such a softie at heart is just the best. I love that she's such a badass with a heart of pure gold.
Kinda got the impression watching that Eda is totally a hard ass with a soft heart while Raine was steel core in puppy disguise X)
i wanna add something about the moment when Raine pulls Eda's hand
(sorry if any of this sounds scuffed, english is not my native language)
so what i wanna talk about is their "last" words
"I promised a special kid i will protect you"
they knew they probably wont make it out alive. it was their last words. they chose this words, not "i love you" or smth
why?
so, after "Eda's requiem" they were determined to keep Eda safe. they knew she will go on a suicide mission if needed.
and she went to confront Darius and Eberwolf with Raine in the first place because she thought her kids didn't love her
so the thing they decided to tell is to reassure her, that she has people to lose, that they love her, that they specifically went to ask Raine to protect her.
they made sure she wont try to kill herself again
but anyway they are alive and gay so thats okay 😊
/insert the Raine seeing Harpy Eda scene with happy kids music/
They also pretended not to care about eda to keep her safe Wich must have hurt so much but they care so much about her and ahh I love them!

Raine’s personality, ambition, determination, sacrifice - practically everything about them makes them one of my favorite characters in the show
I'm just saying, I would not have been opposed to more of Raine acting as a double agent. (Raeda villain au enemies-to-lovers let's go)
THAT IS A GREAT IDEA LETS GO LETS GO
Idk if people even have the heart to make Raine a villain or raine acting as a stone cold double agent here **against** Eda
With the finale, I think it's definitely seen how powerful Raine is, not only from what Belos said and also their constant resistance
I love Raine ❤ that's all I really have to say.
That and the fact I was happy they gave them anxiety but still made them an incredibly strong, tough character outside of that. Similar to Hunter, although not quite the same thing.
FINALLY a video that gives Raine the appreciation they deserve! I hadn't even thought about some of the things you mentioned and I have analyzed them HARD (and now I feel even worse for them :') )
People tend to perceive them as some anxious wimp rebel-wannabe and miss literally EVERYTHING about their character.
Glad you enjoyed it!
petition for a whole OVA episode starring Raine Whispers (and Eda for kicks and giggles)
We needed a raine appreciation episode ima be honest...but tbh they're to precious, we need to protec the enby bard
Agreed 😅💕🎻
I honestly need to rewatch the show sometime to better appreciate these characters better because they are really well crafted. Also it amuses me to no end that my middle name is actually Raine and was considering making it my first in my hunt for a new name years ago before Owl House. We would have been nonbinary name buddies, an massive honor. But hey, I still get that honor regardless in the end.
Thank you for sharing!!!!
I love Raine Whispers so much.
As you should ❤️🎻✨️
Love the comparison to Luthen Rael. Both great spies and freedom fighters!
This is random, but that description reminded me of "OH NO! IT'S BOILING ACID!" I haven't thought about that meme in years.
I already adored Raine, but this makes me love them even more
I like that in the final *spoilers ahead* they are so powerful that belos was annoyed about it hell they broke out of a spell that the *Collector* placed on them!
this video just made me love raine even more. they’re such an amazing character. the writing in this show is just incredible
They deserve better imo
I just wanna see them when they’re not in a possession situation, real or not :
Raine is also terrifying cause they literally ejected Belos out of their body when they were being controlled
Rain is honestly one of my absolute favorite characters along with Hunter those two are just adorable and badass in so many different ways I love it
Dude, I love video essays like these. You brilliantly summarized a character that hasn't been executed in this medium before, or at least, none that I can recall. You are awesome, thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ever since in Season 3, even Belos also said something about them saying how he hates how annoyingly strong they are and that's when u know raine compared to belos saying that is really intimidating but also badass
Oooh great analysis! I love Raine and you did them such justice here
Something that I find really interesting about this is that, on the Day of Unity, when the fight breaks out between the coven heads, Darius joins in, UNTIL- Eberwolf is threatened, and he surrenders.
Having folks talk about the subtext of the story makes the series feel less short
They're ESPECIALLY scary now after the final too.
People have theorized that Raine's palisman took the form of their violin, but we don't know for sure.
THIS is why Raine is my favorite Owl House character
Pretty certain that if Owl House was around when I was a kid, and I looked up to Raine as much as I do now, I would have figured out that I’m non-binary a lot sooner and been more confident about it. Not in an attempt to be more like them, but to understand what it is I see and hope for in myself, thanks to the many lessons this series presents
Yeah!! This kind of representative fiction is INCREDIBLY powerful! I am so grateful that the kids of today have this, and those of us who are post-kid get to appreciate it for what it is now!
Same! Like I'm definitely in a spot where I both want to be Raine and want to be _with_ Raine cause they're just so cool in a way I can't explain but they would have definitely also helped me realize I was non-binary too XD
can we also take into account just how strong bard magic is?
Another piece of ATLA's legacy - the same way that Sokka can be cynical & paranoid yet ruthless & self-sacrificing.
Something that I don't see people point out enough: when Raine learns Eda has kids but she dismisses them. Raine was a _teacher._ They probably know better than most that just because you're not blood doesn't mean you're not family, and how important mentors are to their students.
YESSSSSSS YOU GET IT
I’m so glad someone did an analysis on my fav character!
saw one video, and youtube has been RIGHTFULLY recommending more of your stuff. and now i need to rewatch owl house lol
so glad my fav character getting some attention
After seeing the finale, I gotta say ooh boy.
raine actually hides their palisman in their violin
And yknow raine is incredibly powerful
Raines instrument is their palisman
Raine is one of those characters I wished existed more often, that morally gray dubiousness all for the sake of a greater goal, and NOT being felt as the bad guy, is always a beloved breath of fresh air. I can only name a few characters who gave the same vibe, and even they don't come anywhere close to as agreeable to me in their decisions as Raine because usually there's some form of cowardice holding them back too. Raine didn't have that.
The weakest coven/magic type is potions and you won't convince me otherwise.
The coven system is so STUPId it's so clearly stupid and it makes no SENSE and that's the point but oh my GODHSFLDSFALSKGJ GLK and you're absolutely right
Congratulations, you get to spend your whole life making magical soup while other people get to control animals and create life.
Raine is so cool, and so are you!!!
Rain didn’t give up his palisman though, it’s his violin, expertly hidden from Belos by staying in that form while hidden away unless battle or play is required.
Not to mention that they’re stupidly overpowered-
This is amazing!! I love Raine and this analysis of their character is really well done. Great video!!
Thank you!!
Raine did have a foxy palisman after the time jump. Couldnt tell if it was a new one or not
The odds of me getting proven wrong on that point were SUPER high but yknow what it's fine! The interpretation works either way u v u
a thing i always thought about with raine's magic that i haven't seen mentioned is that they can make forcefields, lightning storms, neutralize terra's poison, neutralize spells, control people's limbs, etc. with just *one note*. not even a chord or anything, just a whistle or an open string pizz is enough to match coven scouts and eda in a fight. what's going to happen when they play an actual piece?? the boiling isles explode??
i believe raine’s palisman is heavily implied to be their instrument, with (spoilers) context from watching and dreaming. i think they hid their palisman from belos via disguising it as a magical instrument
That is an interesting theory, I never thought about it that way 🤔
this video reminded me of a fantasy book series that also has quite the emphasis on sacrifice and greater good vs. personal attachment. (a fuckton of spoilers for Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. i dont even know why i made this comment.)
Eda reminds me a lot of Aelin, and Raine reminds me a lot of Dorian.
And just like Eda, Aelin was fine with ending herself for the greater good even if other people depended on her.
just the word choice and way you describe them in this video is incredible and also hilarious lmaoooo
Thank you!!
Raine actually disguised their palacmen as an instrument to keep it from getting taken :))
Their violin IS the palismen, and raines actually palismen unisguised is a fox!
Update: their violin was ALWAYS their palisman. They never lost them

I hope that’s enough to hide it. Belos actually complains about how powerful Raine is. They are just that much of a threat even with all of the restrictions and only barely failed to prevent the tyrants plan one their own. I would not want to be on their bad side even in Mario Party.
The fact that your character is a bat, and Raines rebellion was the Batts, is so perfect lol❤
Raine actually still had their palisman, look closely at the handle of their violin.
Raine literally nearly stopped belos from becoming the kaiju he becomes
Raine is hands down my fav and i wish we couldve seen more of them in general ;-;
Raine is a next level badass and I'm so pleased that the finale validated every insane thought I ever had about their intensity and then some
They feel like an anti hero a little. Like they are willing to let things burn for the greater good no matter who it effects
I love this analysis, I didn't realize how much Raine would have to give up, especially their palisman.
Raine is such a great character, as someone who's nonbinary and has anxiety, I love that they're such a great character.
Their *
@@celestialhumanoid Thanks, I was writing and playing with a kitten at the same time. Usually I'm good with their and they're.
@@midnights2631 no worries! I'm nb too
@@celestialhumanoid Same here :D I'm nb too.
@@midnights2631 I'm nb too 😝
I never realized this about them.
So in conclusion raine cool
I loved this video! We really need Raine content, they are the best and I think a lot of people do not pay enough attention to how deep an strong can their motivations and actions be
This video makes me realize why Eda and them make such a great team. They're very parallel for different reasons and motivations
Theyre both such amazing characters and flawless counterparts I go feral when thinking about them
what an incredible video!! ive seen many people (though mostly before wad) complain how the show makes raine very flat but they've actually been really well characterized, the show just doesn't tell you what theyre like word for word. fantastic little essay, made me appreciate and understand raine a lot more :)
Actually it was confirmed the violin was his parliament and is was repaired after he smashed it.
Omg! Yes! I love this character study!
Love your character analysis here (and in masks off) These are wonderful (and I'm pointing authors to them because there are some good take aways here)
Wow! That's a very high compliment. I'm so glad you enjoyed, and thank you for watching!
I like to think that the fox palisman that Raine has in the last episode has always been their palisman, so they didn’t give it to Belos
