Awesome video with good explanations on construction. I’d like to try out your design because of its weight and functionality. Well done Dave cheers m8😊
Very nice design. If I was making it, perhaps I would go for plywood bed bases rather screwed and glued slats as it would be much more durable, especially if a heavy person sat on an overhanging corner joint? Very nice clip and design. Thank you for sharing your idea with us.
super! This thing has a real everyday usage as bed for guests. We don`t have much space. Excellent video Dave. A really sound lightweight structure which can be further customised as needed. Just came across this and although from your very clear drawings it was straightforward to see how it works, seeing your manufacture with some design changes on the way, was a delight. Thank you!
Nice video! 2 Suggestions, if you don't mind! 1st I think it should be better for the overall comfort if you put your slats left to right instead of front to back of the vehicle. 2nd I think you should simply put Ikea slat bed base instead of making it! I hope you to make and sold as many as you want! Have a nice day!
Hi Thanks for watching. Yes the slats could go left to right or either way, once the foam cushions are on either would do. Also I looked into the ikea bed slats but the wood was a bit thin to screw to the main frame.

Great video. Really appreciate that you actually demonstrate enough of the process of creating the various parts of the vans you build. It will hopefully come in handy one day for the likes of myself who wouldn’t know one end of a screwdriver from the other 😂.

Beautiful work. I was wondering if when you make the bed into a couch, it looks like the seat extends to the side unsupported. Is the frame strong enough if someone sits on that unsupported end of the couch seat.
How do you propose the mattress to operate? Will the three sections somehow be attached to each other? If not, what will hold the section at the door end in place to stop it falling down the back? Extremely nice job by the way.
Hi, Yes the foam is cut into 3 sections and in the MKII R&R bed I put a thin shelf on the bottom of the back section for the foam to sit on while the bed is in the seating position.......seems to work well. Thanks.
Friend of mine has asked me to help convert his transit custom into a family camper/day van. This rock n' roll bed will be ideal for what he has in mind. I'll have to make it as a 'full width' and the base frame will need to be taller to accommodate the 'downstairs' beds for the little 'uns, but there's no reason it can't be adpted to suit...maybe a couple of additional braces/crossmembers to account for the extra height. Thanks for sharing your project and explaining the process in such an east-to-understand format.
Hi Dave enjoyed the build video, you mentioned you may make them for various vans? Do you have or could you make one for short wheelbase 96 VW T4? After needing 4 of us to remove our original rock and roll bed including 2 strong younger generations lol, we realise why we are struggling. We are in age group 65-70 years old and determined to hang on to our old van. Any help or information would be much appreciated, cheers 🍻
Hi dave great video i am nearly there with the build but cannot find any 800mm runners without them being around 60-80 pound I have found 750 for 12 pound would that suffice many thanks
Hi, Yes I used the 750mm ones after making a couple with the 800s. But I had to alter the length of the seat section so the bed would still fold out properly.
Really like the design concept but I've been struggling to transfer this to my medium sized van - Expert/Dispatch/Proace size which really only have a workable floor space of around 213cm x 126cm roughly. For this length the bed frame would always be restricting the side door entrance I'd have to step over and with utility units on opposite side, I'd have to step outside van each time to fully extend bed. Not ideal in bad weather. I can only think of some kind of an extension ?
Howdy!! This looks REALLY space efficient- Do you think this would be a straightforward, if time consuming, build for someone without super in depth knowledge of wood working?
Hi, Yes I do make them for sale...a slightly different design with ply boards instead of the slatts....email me at mrdwatsong@gmail.com if you are interested.
Hi Dave, Great video. Just wondering if you have the dimensions for a full size double bed. I presume the length would be very similar just the width being different as the mattress would be 135cm wide? Thanks again for a really informative and detailed video.
This is just what I have been looking for to build a bed in my kia pegio van where are you situated what country I'm in central coast Australia Australia
hi Dave great video. Have you decided to start making these yet ?. i would be very interested to know if you could give me a price for one to fit in a v w crafter . I don't have the room to build one or time . regards allan
Great job, I’m seriously thinking of getting a vivaro, as my next van, I currently have a VW T4, that was already converted when we got it 7 years ago, but now I need a daily van / car / camper, one ring to rule them all kind of thing, really want to convert my own as I know what works and what doesn’t work for us now, can you sleep width ways in the back of the van ? I am 5ft 8” small and missus is 5ft, so I think as width ways bed would be better for us, then we can leave it down if we have the awning with us, or put the bed up and have the sofa if we are just vanning it
Thanks a lot....the vivaro is just over 5" wide and once you get insulation and panels on it would be a bit tight I think. But the R&R bed is a good solution 6" long and folds away real easy.
Dave that is brilliant and exactly what I’m after. I also think you can put a draw u der it for clothes. I have no skills what do ever and I’m inspired to give that a go. Do you provide plans that I can Jerry rig to my van and I’m happy to pay. Happy to buy one from you absolutely, but I’m in Australia. So could you do it as a kit? To minimise costs
Hi, I did try sending a couple with a courier but they arrived damaged and it would cost a fortune to send one to Australia. I don't have plans in PDF form but you could take a screenshot of the plans on the video. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
Great work and craftsmanship there well done Dave! Do you think this could be made the opposite way so the front seat part is fixed and it pulls out backwards?
any chance you have the plans available. Im visiting the UK July 2 and I'm going to build out a mates Nissan NV200 van so I can borrow it for a few weeks. Having the plans would save me a ton of time and faff. :)
Hi Dave - this is fabulous and looks ideal for our Vito compact conversion - dimensions are right too! You mention possibly making to order - in which i would definitely be interested! Would that be possible? Cheers Paul
Hi Sandra, Glad you are enjoying the videos. I do make the beds for sale but I can only do "local pick up" as a couple I have sent by courier have arrived damaged. The postage was £35.00 so if you are in traveling distance of NE33 let me know and I will be able to make a bed to fit the SWB trafic. Thanks for watching.
Hi Dave - thanks for sharing this. I love the design and have built one for a smaller van - I’ve a 19mm floor thats stuck down already so I,m wondering how you finally fixed it to the floor? I cant come up through the underside of van with long bolts etc, I,m thinking 6 M6 coach bots through the frame into the 19mm floor should be ok but wonder if that’s strong enough?
You are not going to able to stand there to put it away when the sink/hob/counter is in, you will need to access the other side, which may not be easy. I have a 4 piece R&R bed and that has three advantages, the sofa is further forward for ease of fold up, under bed storage is much bigger and there is storage behind the sofa for a lot of bedding and clothes bags. Mine is a steel frame, but I am sure you could do a 4 section wooden version. Couldn't you make this from plywood 8'x4'x12mm with holes/slots?
Hi. That's why I put a pull strap on the middle section, so you can pull the bed back into seat mode from the front of it. (I might not have shown that in the video, I cant remember). It could be made from 12mm ply but that would make it heavier and not as much fun to build. Thanks for watching
@@dave-watson Easier to make too, make sure you put a long strap on, I put too shorter one on mine and it's hard to find. So I always end up lifting from the side But this kind of bed is easily the best, much better than a slide out with movable cushions. It's really handy having storage behind the sofa. Thanks anyway.
Hi, I'm working on a flatpack idea for the bed so I can deliver them easier. I think the primastar is the same van as the Vivaro and Trafic so one the same as the one in the video should fit. If you would like to discuss it further please email me mrdavewatsong@gmail.com Thanks
Finally, a video that actually explains how to do the thing.

That’s absolutely awesome!
Thanks a lot. I put one of these in a van I built earlier in the year it works great and is really light weight in the van.
Absolutely superb video, about to embark on the build. Can you recommend where to get decent runners. Thanks again!
Thanks a lot. I got the runners off ebay, "750mm ball bearing drawer runners". Good luck with the build and thanks for watching.
Hi, Thanks a lot. Yes i think that could be done you would just need to put the sliding frame on the other way around. Thanks for watching.
Brilliant video
Thanks a lot Andy.
Id love to cone and spend a day with you doing woodwork.
Just look like a top top man
any chance you have the plans available. Im visiting the UK July 2 and I'm going to build out a mates Nissan NV200 van so I can borrow it for a few weeks. Having the plans would save me a ton of time and faff. :)
Hi, I don't have PDF plans but you cold take a screenshot from the video.
Hi Dave - this is fabulous and looks ideal for our Vito compact conversion - dimensions are right too! You mention possibly making to order - in which i would definitely be interested! Would that be possible? Cheers Paul
Awesome love it
Chevy express extended. How much for plans?
Thanks very much. It was a great project.
if you were to start making these would be very interested.I have a transit Custom
Hi, I do make them for sale and I can make one for a transit custom. Email me if you would like to discuss.
mrdwatsong@gmail.com
Thanks
Would love one for a Vw transporter t5.1!
They would fit in a T5
Would you be willing to share your plans with me so i can make one please? Thanks
@@georgelatham9336 I don't have a digital copy....but you could take a screenshot
Love watching your videos,, love to buy one for my Renault traffic swb if you can make one , sandra
Dave could I buy one for a short wheelbase transit custom please.
Hi Jim, Yes I can make one to fit a transit custom. If you email me we can discuss dimensions etc. email address is
mrdwatsong@gmail.com.
Thanks
Hi Dave - thanks for sharing this. I love the design and have built one for a smaller van - I’ve a 19mm floor thats stuck down already so I,m wondering how you finally fixed it to the floor? I cant come up through the underside of van with long bolts etc, I,m thinking 6 M6 coach bots through the frame into the 19mm floor should be ok but wonder if that’s strong enough?
I think that would be more than strong enough....I usually screw the frame to the floor and that seems to be good.
Brilliant ! Very pro! What's the length of the runner extended? I have runner 60cm folded, 120 cm extended, your seems double extended 🙂
hanks a lot, The runners I am using now are 750mm and extend to 1500mm, I've tried a few different sizes but the 750s work best.
are the sliding legs few mm shorter to ensure a smooth sliding without rubbing the floor,or the are the same lenght as the base?
Yes i made them a couple of mm shorter and glued some felt on the bottom of them so as not to scratch the floor.
Would definitely be interested if you do start making them for Nissan primastar
Hi, I'm working on a flatpack idea for the bed so I can deliver them easier. I think the primastar is the same van as the Vivaro and Trafic so one the same as the one in the video should fit. If you would like to discuss it further please email me mrdavewatsong@gmail.com Thanks
How much does sliding hardware you have on this design cost and where would I find them to purchase?
I got the runners of ebay I think they were about £12.00 for a set of two. Thanks
Brilliant thanks
My pleasure.
Nice to see you back Dave you managed to find a new van ?
Yes it's good to be back. I have a new Vivaro that I'm going to do over the next few weeks, so loads of videos to come. Thanks a lot man.
Fantastic Dave. Can you do me one for my 71 VW please?😁
Hi, I can make one to fit but I can only do local pick up. If your not to far away from NE33 let me know and I will get some measurements from you.
Wow amazing nice to a video how to make one fancy making me one 👍
Thanks......I do make them for sale...send me an email if your interested. mrdwatsong@gmail.com
Hi dave have a short wheel base vivaro could you make 1 for this van
Hi, Yes I could make one for the SWB Vivaro but I can only do "Local pick up". I'm at NE33 if thats not too far away from you let me know.
Verry good idia sir❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊
Thanks a lot.
Love this build. I am modifying it to make a queen sized bed. How long are the screws you used for the top?
Thanks, screws which went through the slats into the runners were 30mm. Good luck with your own build.
