As a teacher my classroom library is my ultimate passion and I spent WAY too much money buying light wood children’s bookshelves for my classroom and filling them with 2,000 children’s books to recreate exactly the cozy feeling I had as a child for my students. I even catalogued every single book online and taught my kids how to be the weekly librarian and help their classmates check out books with a functional scanner. I probably need to get a life.
@@Scoutharper2 wow I love that, your students are so lucky!! I was also a librarian assistant (3 days a week during my lunch break) when I was like 13 - I took it very seriously! The librarians taught me about archiving and the dewy decimal system etc, I loved it!

Even if you don't need them practically, which that many hard angular surfaces going on, curtains just make the whole space feel softer in ways that defy logic. Also, I'm assuming that they reason you have the bed + stands shifted that far over instead of centered on the wall is because of the door, but it looks like there is still a bit more room to shift them over? The closer you can move it to center on that wall will give more room for the desk and help it not feel so tight. Welcome Boots! We love you already! The shelf extenders will not only provide more space but will also help the wardrobe feel more intentional. The space above the dresser is also screaming for a shelf for Boots so they can enjoy the sunshine in the window. Those windows make this whole room work. Without the daylight it would be too dark but the light and the plant… it works so well! If you don’t do a shelf over the dresser, please add a mirror or piece of art. I’d also recommend an area rug. It’ll be cozy on your feet at night and it’ll help soften sound.
I love that color wood so much more than the honey oak color. I know that doesn't ease YOUR anxiety about it, but a nice warm walnut I think is just the perfect shade and in fact yours is just a hair lighter than what I want in my dream office space.
13:16 AHA. See, at the beginning of the video when you said the dark shelves might be a bad idea, I was think about how the contrast between the book covers and the wood would make everything pop. And it turned out so pretty. 🤗
There’s something magical about having a cozy, personal space filled with books, a sanctuary where you can escape into different worlds or find inspiration whenever you want.
This is so amazing! Absolutely in love. Here is an idea for you with the outlet behind the shelves, you could cut a feed spot though the cabinet shelf’s back and have it sit on the bottom shelf and have a hidden away charging compartment for your cameras or whatever your heart desires!
I ADORE watching bookshelf setup videos because I can’t wait to be in my own apartment and buy a bunch of bookshelves too. Unfortunately I got evicted and have been hopping around temporary living situations, but all my books in my storage unit will eventually be set up like this and I’m SO excited for that day! I’m very impatiently waiting 😂
Yes, move the bed to between the windows. Put nightstands on either side and if you’re allowed to hang some drapes. Move the cabinet case to the right side of the wall the bed used to be on, and put the desk next to that. Move the bookcase behind the door over into the cabinet case’s spot and leave the dresser/credenza where you have it. Get some rugs in there too and some appropriate art over the bed, dresser, and desk. You could even mount a mirror on the wall space behind the door but make sure to put in a stop so that door doesn’t open up all the way and smash it or the edge of the bookcase. Looks like you have a fantastic view and a beautiful space to live in. ❤ Also, if you’re allowed to paint, do the wall space above the rail and ceiling slightly darker in shade than the walls, this will help the ceiling feel closer but not closed in.
Bolt those bookshelves to the wall! I was almost crushed by an unsecured CD shelf as a kid. Things can topple over in the blink of an eye. Great room setup. ❤
For anyone else who does this, please note that it's hugely easier and simpler, as well as far better looking in the end, to go ahead and secure the bookcases to the walls before loading them with books. That way the odd gaps can be eliminated, especially where the angled corner unit so awkwardly doesn't fit squarely and tightly between the units on either side. Once the shelves are loaded with books they're far too heavy to make the fine adjustments that are so easy when they're empty. All that said, I absolutely LOVE this project which is motivating me finally after more than twenty years in our house to replace my "temporary" bookcases with these units. THANK YOU FOR POSTING! LIKED AND SUBSCRIBED!
I highly recommend Dear Modern’s feng shui videos and book (haven’t read it yet but I’m guessing it’s similarly good) and maybe tagging him in a short clip of your situation asking for advice so he might explain how to organize this room most logically/in a way that won’t make your soul cry
These are actually the exact shelves and color I'm planning on getting! I'm so glad I saw your video bc it reaffirms that they're gonna look so cozy and amazing!! You did such a great job!
Honestly writing on a typewriter is super satisfying. I’m sure there has to be a way to make it more efficient by scanning the pages or something. The sound and lack of distractions does something good for my creativity
You could paint or wallpaper the back of the shelves to break up the dark wood if you wanted! I would use a switch fused extension but ideally cut the back so can access the plug.
Nice to see a library with actual books! Good job with optimising the book filling, spacing the shelves adequately etc to reduce empty space. Some comments: 1) Top extenders! Apart giving more shelf space, the book shelves will look better! Unlike your previous apartment, it seems you here have plenty of ceiling space, maybe even for two extenders, although the second might require some minor DIY, like drilling holes from the top for fasteners. You already have a ladder, should be sufficient to reach the books. 2) Fasten the shelves into the wall using the IKEA-provided fasteners! Yes, you need to drill into the wall for this but is absolutely necessary for safety, in particular if you are going to extend them upward. Also, it is not so easy to anchor the corner shelf once they are put in place, this should be done during assembly. Maybe you can do it from the top, normally it's done from the floor. Finally, the shelves can be bolted together for a more secure and tighter look, although that produces holes in the sides of the shelves (if you ever want to break up and sell them). 3) Reading light! The chair looks awesome, but you also need a good lamp. Thanks for the inspiration, in particular the barcode scanner was a revelation. Funny it got killed by a barcode virus, didn't know that was a thing. I think the cup board doors look very cool, like a passage into a wall of books.
Extenders in that tall room would be gorgeous and just draw the eyes up! And absolutely put the bed between the two windows! It would feel grand and comfier feng shui that way anyway and the nightstands wouldn't be out of place at all. Those shelves are lovely. 😍😍
The cupboard reminds me of the wardrobe to Narnia. I think you should be cheeky and put a hidden mural inside it. Make yourself smile every time you’re going to get a new memory card or battery.
I would just switch around the desk and the dresser (or whatever you call that bit of furniture with the typewriter on it). That way you have more room behind you to get in and out of your desk chair without hitting the bed behind you. And if the desk is where the dresser is, the window would be to your left, and your bookshelves to your right. That way you get a view of the outside world, plus a view of the bookshelves (rather than having your back to the lovely bookshelves). Then you also get better natural lighting for when you're writing at your desk if the window is to the side rather than in front, so you don't get that blinding contrast.
I know you were nervous abt the darker wood but i KNEW it was going to look stunning bc dark wood always does (dark wood supremacy). Also, at first the cabinet between the shelves looked weird but 1) like you said, with the books on the shelves and on top of it, it looks way more cohesive and surrounded, but also 2) from an architectural point of view its also better, bc that way you dont have the cabinet's door banging against the bedroom door
the bed on the wall with windows would be suchhh a vibe and also more feng shui! (you're not supposed to have your bed in front of a doorway bc you're right in the flow of energy/ less of a private cozy space). also the display table with the typewriter makes sense to be by the door since it'll be displayed right when you come in and you can do your computer work in the cozy window corner!
The colour of the shelves is stunning! Hope you'll figure out the best placement for all your furniture soon, as you spend more time in the space. It looks beautiful already! I think it's wise to ban your cat from this room until you mount all the shelving units to the wall, just in case. The same goes for your friends' children or very young family members, if they are around. Very happy for you! 😊
Looks amazing!!!!! Love the books surrounding the cupboard and love your choice of bed frame and desk especially. That 100 essential books print is Gorgeous. You should get that framed and put it over your desk. Personally think the bed is better where you have it too, and I would put a large antique landscape oil painting in deep greens and browns above your bed to add to your classic library feel. (I'm a closet interior decorator lol) SO exciting to get into your own beautiful UK apartment. It looks fantastic.
I like the color of the bookshelves. I would suggest getting the bookshelf you want now while the color is still available, but also so that when the sun fades them a bit they'll match. I like the idea of matching the door one on the other side. Esp. since you have the room.
I moved into my first apartment 4 months ago and with my budget of basically nothing I've been really struggling to find motivation and turn what I have into something beautiful. This vlog has inspired me to get up and move stuff around and experiment with my apartment. The space you've created is beautiful, and I know that someday it will be everything you dreamed of and more ❤️
This summer, I moved 1000 books across the country, too! I also swear I'll never move again. HOWEVER i am American and my country is much bigger, lol, so that gave me a laugh. I thought, Jack. How hard can moving across England really be?!? Your country is like twelve miles wide lol. Also: I bought Billy bookcases 10 years ago, when I was a broke graduate student in a tiny D.C. studio apartment. I still have those same bookcases, many moves later. They last!
Yes!! Headboard moved to the middle with the bedside tables on either side. I vote curtains too (it will tie everything together so nicely!) I also vote to put the desk where the bed is but feel much less strongly on that. (I feel very strongly about the bed)
Looks absolutely amazing. I suggest getting some sort of UV filter on your windows to protect the books and shelves. Not sure what is available to you there, but could be worth it.
You might want to add a doorjamb/stop to keep the door from banging up the shelf, especially if you ever plan on reselling them after getting custom shelves.
Hey Jack, I know you won’t read this but it makes me so happy to see you achieving all these cool things. I have been following you since your studytuber days and it just makes me so happy to see you grow so much. Every time I see you do something new and cool, I am in awe and honestly you are such an inspiration to me.
I got those shelves with couple of glass doors and am in love with the oak and vibe. I got an armchair, ottoman and a vintage reading light. It’s a whole mood and I never leave my reading room.
23:08 about the reshuffle, I was gonna mention it but until this minute on the video you didn't ask SO: basically, if you put the bed between the windows and the table on the other wall, you will always have a view of the door, which not only feng shui endorses, but also makes the room feel more flowy and less "blocky", you can pretty much access anywhere without having to walk sideways or anything my room has a similar layout and I was very hesitant to make a similar change and oh boy did it change my life, hope you try it out, if it doesn't work, at least you can move it back! Also, happy to see you happy
Omg i think the bed would look so much better against the window wall!!!! It would make the room so much more symmetrical, and would make it a center piece to accentuate the beautiful bed. Ur furniture is gorgeous
I love the vibe of your bed-library!! I think the idea to switch the bed and desk is very good, because currently the bed is standing right where you’d walk through the room to the window, and it’s blocking the natural pathways in the room. If it was inbetween the windows the desk would have more space to sit at and the bed would seperate the reading corner and the desk space a bit!
Your library looks amazing! This might be a weird take but I would put the bed where the dresser is now, just because I don't like the door near my head or windows directly behind me (for vibes/feng shui reasons). Then the dresser could go on the window wall and the desk could go with the bed (though it's harder to appreciate the books that way). I definitely agree though that the bed on the window wall is better than where it is now!
I'm a German so imma complain! - The shelves need to be attached to the wall asap. That's a literal ton of books waiting to fall onto you and crush you when A) you reach for them B) run walk against the shelf at night C) an earthquake happens. England is mostly earthquake free, but some areas like London do have moderate risk. - The now inaccessible extension chord behind those shelves will definitely become a fire hazard over the next years of poor ventilation and especially because you're gonna pull on it every now and then. Cutting a hole in the back of the shelf for access to the socket is the usual MO. - Books in the bedroom are a risk for the books. You breathe and sweat and that's moist. You're asking for mold. - The windows are gonna bleach your spines. - Books in the bedroom are a health risk. Once they get moldy on the wall-facing side, you won't notice for years. But you'll breathe the spores. - If heaven forbid there's ever a fire in your building while you're in that library, you. are. dead. Of course, consciously ignoring any or all of these risks is your good right 👍🏻 Just making sure it is a conscious decision
The room as it looks like right now is very similar (though about twice as big) to the room I grew up in back home. Yes, the power sockets were behind the bookshelves full of pretty old books. Yes, there most likely was mold. Yes, the bookshelves were not attached to the wall, and also full of books and almost ceiling high. That was the room I stayed in as a toddler (basically since I was born, until I moved out at 18)... I think I wasted all my survival skills in my early childhood, that's why I'm such a hazard to myself now. No other possible explanation.
I don't understand what you mean. Just put extension chords in that extension chord and web them behind the shelves. The heat will keep the books dry and free of mold.
Wait, so where are people who live in apartments supposed to keep their books? I have *always* kept all my books in my bedroom, as that's the only space I've ever had for them. I don't have as many books as Jack, but I do have a few shelves full. I have never gotten mold in my books, either, and have never once thought that could be a thing. I know the UK does have a general damp/mold problem though so that's probably more a possibility here than it is for me. Just kind of blown away that books in a bedroom is seen as such a health and safety hazard when I have never once considered it.
Love the tall ceiling, the huge windows, the natural lighting, and all the new bookshelves. What a cozy room and you have nice furniture! I hope you anchor the bookshelves to the wall, to be safe, so that you don't accidentally get murdered by books if one topples over.
Looks really nice! I think before adding the extenders i would cut a hole in backwall of the closed cupboard to thread a powerstrip through it to have a little powerstation for your filming equipment behind closed doors. I think there were wall outlets behind the shelf to the left of it?
I, too, made my apartment into a book sanctuary. People walk in and comment on it every time, and I'm just here living the dream. (Also, please attach the shelves, I don't want to read about you being injured by a falling booshelf!)
It would be so cool to replace the bedroom door with closet doors and then have it be surrounded by books too. Or to have several additional closet doors embedded into the books, leading into book worlds like Narnia. Although having multiple closet doors might get confusing 😂

My husband does woodworking and has made custom bookshelves for someone before. While they weren't cheap by any means, they will last a lifetime and the homeowners were thrilled. That said, having moved a thousand miles several times and realizing how hard books are to move...I feel pretty good about getting 99.9% of my reads from libraries and owing just one tiny shelf of books. Never again; moving with books is a nightmare.

Also, I need to know where the dresser and besides came from. I love that dresser!!!
Anyone else here obsessed with Oliver Mercer's book "Hidden Manifestation"? It's like discovering a secret treasure map of manifestation!
Loveee the colour of the new wood
Poop colour
@@matthew-j75 yeah, that's called brown, lil bro. grow up
There’s something magical about having a cozy, personal space filled with books, a sanctuary where you can escape into different worlds or find inspiration whenever you want.
I love the colour of the bookshelves you picked! We love intense dark academia vibe! I found you through your dark academia video! It's perfect!!!
Yes yes yes to switching the desk and the bed, it'll frame things nicely, and the vibes will feel better I guarantee. 👌
Also, if you’re allowed to paint, do the wall space above the rail and ceiling slightly darker in shade than the walls, this will help the ceiling feel closer but not closed in.
I think a chair would be a great addition. This beauty of a room really requires it, Jack! (Invitation to creep in through my screen.)
I agree for the bed going in between the windows! You definitely could use some wall art and some curtains!
20:22 Jack the hair is haring it's so cool
These are actually the exact shelves and color I'm planning on getting! I'm so glad I saw your video bc it reaffirms that they're gonna look so cozy and amazing!! You did such a great job!
Honestly writing on a typewriter is super satisfying. I’m sure there has to be a way to make it more efficient by scanning the pages or something. The sound and lack of distractions does something good for my creativity
I am very happy that there are so many young men on You Tube. They are very interesting and inventive in their videos. Love it
You could paint or wallpaper the back of the shelves to break up the dark wood if you wanted! I would use a switch fused extension but ideally cut the back so can access the plug.
Nice to see a library with actual books! Good job with optimising the book filling, spacing the shelves adequately etc to reduce empty space. Some comments:
1) Top extenders!
22:38 OMG 😭😭😭 I’m cryinggggg I laughed way too hard at that, it caught me so off guard I’m dead 😂
The bed between the windows is perfect, but the best place for the desk is not on the right, but on the wall where the bed is now!!!!
Esp. since you have the room.
the dark wood tone is giving great cozy vibe to the room!
definitely switch the bed and the desk tho
the desk looks too close to the bed right now :(
I moved into my first apartment 4 months ago and with my budget of basically nothing I've been really struggling to find motivation and turn what I have into something beautiful. This vlog has inspired me to get up and move stuff around and experiment with my apartment. The space you've created is beautiful, and I know that someday it will be everything you dreamed of and more ❤️
I love the colour of the bookshelves, it looks very grand British library.
They last!
The wood color is so beautiful!! (and in my humble opinion waaay better than the previous one)❤
I love the color of the shelves!! Elegant and beautiful, so hope you’re no longer questioning it✨🙌
You might want to add a doorjamb/stop to keep the door from banging up the shelf, especially if you ever plan on reselling them after getting custom shelves.
Might be one of my favourite videos of yours so far!
I LOVE the darker book cases!! Looks so fancy, also the extensions would look perfect
Hey Jack,
I know you won’t read this but it makes me so happy to see you achieving all these cool things. I have been following you since your studytuber days and it just makes me so happy to see you grow so much. Every time I see you do something new and cool, I am in awe and honestly you are such an inspiration to me.
The bed shouldn't face the door, bad juju and feng shui. Love love love your home library 🤌🏼 chefs kiss
I got those shelves with couple of glass doors and am in love with the oak and vibe. I got an armchair, ottoman and a vintage reading light. It’s a whole mood and I never leave my reading room.
A chair is definitively missing :)
I know that’s what I was thinking 🤨
And a big cosy rug
I immeadiately loved the wood! I think it will make the hole thing calmer and more classy!
the Jordan Theresa cameo was so wholesome!! the absolute astonishment and terror with the expanding mattress 😂
23:08 about the reshuffle, I was gonna mention it but until this minute on the video you didn't ask
SO: basically, if you put the bed between the windows and the table on the other wall, you will always have a view of the door, which not only feng shui endorses, but also makes the room feel more flowy and less "blocky", you can pretty much access anywhere without having to walk sideways or anything
my room has a similar layout and I was very hesitant to make a similar change and oh boy did it change my life, hope you try it out, if it doesn't work, at least you can move it back!
Also, happy to see you happy
Agree with non feng shui
So excited to see this, an era ends but another begins❤❤
Omg i think the bed would look so much better against the window wall!!!! It would make the room so much more symmetrical, and would make it a center piece to accentuate the beautiful bed. Ur furniture is gorgeous
as a person who loves dark wood with light walls, the shelves are gorgeous ❤
12:55 pin interest board , so lovely
It’s actually ‘Resident Internet Librarian ASMR’. Feels awesome 👏🏽
0:34 No, it actually reminds me of open air book vendors in Kolkata. Good memories.
I visited Kolkata last year. Beautiful ❤
Was literally just rewatching your videos, hoping for a bookshelf update!
this is absolutely gorgeous 13:59
Loved this! & on behalf of my feng shui riddled mind, I have to say yes! Please switch the bed & the desk!
Jack, why are you enabling our unrealistic home library fantasies?!😭
That wood tone is timeless. It works with the white walls. The bed coordinates as well.
These were my concern as well! (Canadian)
Mentioning fire hazards? Definitely a German 😄 as a fellow German I approve of everything you said in your comment 😄
I hope you anchor the bookshelves to the wall, to be safe, so that you don't accidentally get murdered by books if one topples over.
a chair is definitely NOT missing from this room (I’m scared)
Such a beautiful room! But you know what's missing in it...
a chair
No, a cinema hall
All my favorite TH-camrs posted about moving and the stress and dread it causes. In the midst of my own move, the shared experience was so comforting! I thought the same thing about my next hobbies…because books and crafts are TOO heavy! 🤣 Loved this video so much. The new library looks amazing.
Been waiting for this!
12:59 the big reveal wasn't that jack has a cat??
hey i think if you have a little book below the window or just a little storge unit and upper part with seating for read especially during rainy season or a good sunny day it kinda gives the vibe to sit and enjoy ur book with coffee/tea.. and super cozy omg idk it just i feel it suits perfect in there hahah
You know what's missing from that room ?
Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I love it.
A big deek. Tom Hiddleston's boner is missing 😢😢
I'm loving the wee book trolly. It is such a vibe. I'm also jealous of you having such an extensive library. It's the sort of thing that I dream of.
Such a Harry Styles outfit! ❤ I’m so jealous of all the books
