  • In this episode I head to Lanzarote to ride gravel with Sisters in the Wild, then fail to actually do that. BUT I still got to go bikepacking, swim in the sea and discover the best off-road gravel cycling trails on the island.
    A HUGE thanks to Freemotion for coming to my rescue. I’ve used Freemotion Bike Centre many times in the Canaries and they’re always great!

    Absolutely love your posts and the utterly adorable, attempts by yourself to organize the accidental disorganization and semi chaos, that is your life.
    So entertaining for us as viewers! I say that with complete respect, and thorough enjoyment of your films.
    I'm so glad of your honesty, and that you don't try to edit in a way that would not reflect your actual experiences.
    Like I said, it's honest, it's fun, it's life (your life), and completely enchanting. Thanx for taking the time to film these adventures.
    Take care Juliet 😊

    Hi Juliet and yes at 74 I ride with crash detect running on my Garmin 820. It works pretty well as I do usually have one fall per season LOL and then I have to call my wife to tell her to disregard. But I am normally cycling alone and while I am on a major but slow road along the north shore of Lake Ontario there is a chance I could fall and break something and having crash detect working is a safety feature. I've added a Garmin 955 wrist watch with GPS (woo hoo) and it too has crash detect and I'll probably set that up as well. May retire the 820 if the wrist watch keeps tracking to Garmin Connect and to Strava ok. BTW 10 days out from Covid which at my age was very rough so really really enjoyed your ride video today :)

    Love it!! Was actually going to join Sister’s second Lanzarote trip late Jan but it was all booked up! Planning to head there in February anyway as desperatelyyyy craving some winter sun… UK so grim at the minute ay? Lovely to see this vid as a little taster of what’s to come! Much love 🎉

    Thanks for this, I am away to Lanzarote on Thursday, biking, running, walking, swimming and hopefully sea kayaking while my other half relaxes with a bag full of books. What a brilliant island it is.

    Thanks for sharing your experience of the island. Wow you travelled quite a distance in that one video!! It is such a beautiful place. I arrived yesterday for ten weeks with my road bike. I’m 74 and allowed to come for that length of time! I’ve been spending the winters here for the last five years and simply adore it. I left the highlands of Scotland with a minus 5 last night. It’s plus 23 here today. Yay!!

    So remote and fascinating a place is Lanzarote, I literally stopped and plugged in the headset to better appreciate the sound of the waves crashing onto the shore at sunset 🌊🌅
    I can see why the whole trip had a positive impact on you! =]
    Be careful nonetheless and enjoy the rest of your stay there 😁 🌞

    How could you NOT be happy there, it's beautiful!!! Whilst I'm here in the Pacific Northwest about to head out on a wet windy ride. 😄 I'm curious about your Garmin video because I have a fenix 7 and I had no idea it did that! I mostly mtb so I don't think I'll turn it on but it's nice to know it does that. Cheers Juliet!!

    This time last year I bought a new Garmin watch with incident detection. I set it up, and then forgot all about it. About a month later, I had an embarrassing "stationary, clipped-in and leaned the wrong way" fall and was fine, but because I'd forgotten the incident detection it had already contacted my wife before I realised what it was doing! Worked well... possibly too well ;-)

    Re the Garmin accident thing, I have experienced this with my Garmin 530 computer. Breaking fairly hard and running onto a rough, gravelly lay-by, the computer interpreted this as an accident. I didn’t spot it had gone into this mode until my wife called me.
    “What’s going on, why am I getting texts saying you’ve had an accident?’ !!!!

  • @glennsirett3246
    @glennsirett3246 ปีที่แล้ว

    Quite right. Garmin incident alert is too sensitive. I keep it turned off! I do carry a PLB all the time as I'm in the back blocks of NZ

    I had incident detection enabled on my garmin, turned it off after it kept texting my emergency contact everytime I went over a bump/pot hole, and its alarm would blare out for ages until I disabled it.

  • @bubblesezblonde

    I've disabled incident detection specifically because I don't need my partner panicking when a gust of wind blows my bike over while I'm having a caff during a rest stop.

    I bet there's plenty of bike-rentals on Lanzarote. It's probably even less hassle to just rent one than bring one by plane. Just don't forget your own saddle if you wanna do long days 😉

    • @JulietElliottsChannel
      @JulietElliottsChannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s definitely less hassle and Freemotion have good bikes. No gravel bikes tho

  • @captain1664
    @captain1664 ปีที่แล้ว

    I tried incident detection on my Garmin Edge 530 but I got frustrated with too many false alarms, each of which I had to cancel quickly to stop an emergency call going out. Its a shame there is no sensitivity adjustment as its a great idea, but it needs to have far fewer false positives.

    Safety tracking. After I had a triple heart bypass my wife was worried about me cycling alone in the countryside. We use the free "Live Location" feature in WhatsApp when I'm out on the bike so she can see I'm still moving, and know where I am should anything happen.

    Next time you go to lanza and bugger your bike, bikesensations have gravel bikes for hire(only place on the island). I usually take my own but when the baggage handlers were playing silly beggers last year, I left it at home and rented a gravel bike in Puerto del Carmen. The northern side of the island is so much better than the honey pots of the south and isn't the view from Los laderos brilliant? Hate the south side.
