Thank you so much! I was gifted a singer heavy duty machine before I went off to college by my bosses after I left the store and I just got this problem this past weekend. I spent the entire day trying to figure out what to do and how to fix it because I have an action program project due this Thursday and if I don’t finish it then I won’t be able to take it home with me.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR THIS INSTRUCTIVE AND INFORMATIVE VIDEO!! You just might’ve saved me some time and money from repairs and the chance at me getting to keep my project! 😊

I bought a singer 4423 myself and threw the timing off a few days back. Going to get it fixed isn’t an answer now with so many shops closed for Covid19.
His note about holding down the middle was what helped me fix my machine. After An embarrassing amount of time figuring that out, my machine is back up and running. This was really helpful.

Did you have to open up the bottom of the machine? (Where the feet are) what’s the middle? I’m so confused

I was puzzled why all of a sudden the lower thread wasn't being picked up. Two minutes to adjust and my machine works fine again.

I’ve found a new channel! I’ve gone crazy after sewing on my 3 different $7500 production fur and leather machines I came into possession of a “Free!” Singer 717. This machine DOES NOT serve breakfast in bed like the others! Getting the bobbin wound correctly, the gears oiled and the timing adjusted I’m finally sewing glove leather for presents on Christmas DAY! (It’s a good thing we’re having our family gift exchange TOMORROW! Thank you!

This video is an awesome view, of what is under the Bobbin Case and the movement of the Hook to Needle Relationship. My husband used this lesson to fix my sewing machine last December as I hurried to
finish some Christmas gifts. I bought my old beast because it is mostly mechanical, and most of
this problems can be fixed at home.
This year as I hurry to begin some christmas gifts, I broke my beast again. Now it's my turn to fix
    the timing.
We bought the Singer Futura 900 Service Manual Copyright 1974 and are putting it to use with this lesson.
    *Best practice
Set the machine to Straight Stitch
Stitch Width dial set to Zero
    Needle size 18 which I don't have.
Needle position selector on the RIGHT instead of the left.
Round hole needle plate, which I also do not have.
I'm going to pick up a Size 18 Needle tomorrow and wing it on the rest. You didn't let my hubby down
so that is the best endorsement of this Lesson.

Thank God that I still have the owners manual... As it turns out Size 18 Needle is

My friend's Singer was skipping stitches & bobbin thread was loose between each stitch. Many thanks for this helpful video on fixing the timing & now, all stitches are there. Regarding the bobbin thread being too loose goes, the solution was to adjust a tiny screw located on the bobbin with a single clockwise turn to tighten its tension. Cheers!

Only turn that bobbin screw no more than a quarter turn at a time, very sensitive.

Thank you for this video! Very well done. I got my machine repaired right before the pandemic after 10 years of use. After 1 year of sewing masks, the timing fell out of alignment again! (Just goes to show how much it is being used.) But the sewing machine repair shops are all busy, with 30 day backlogs right now. This video helped me get my machine back up and running properly again!

This was very informative. I don't have the same type of machine but the tip of having it to the needle to the left was the best. Very good explanation. I have a different model Singer but because you share your fundamental understanding of how it works, hook catching thread as it gains slack on the upswing, I know I will be able to set mine properly. Thanks.

Appreciate your attention to detail and repetitive instruction - it is extremely helpful. We disassembled Singer 4423 to cleanout all the crud, but mistakenly loosened the triple screws holding the carrier unit of bobbin/feed dogs thus disrupting the timing. I was able to adjust the feed dogs manually and then reset the gearing to get the hook to grab the thread eye/needle at just the right time!! As a bit of a gear head for old classic cars, I was not going to get beat by a different kind of machine - your video and explanation helped a TON. after all - if I can set timing on a 68' GTO, I can do it on a sewing machine right? thank you again - I am now a subscriber!

Come on people commenting, this video sux it didn't show anything other then repeatedly saying needle must be on left position. The most the video did was get people to wonder if they could fix their own sewing machine and some were able to probably by trail and error. So stop giving this video credit you did it yourself the video DIDN'T show anything not even what he had to loosen underneath. Was it a screw, nut.or bolt? So stop giving this video credit if you fixed your machine you did it yourself and you all deserve the credit for doing it. Good Job to those who figured out how to fix your own machine.

Thanks for this video, i recently got trouble on Jaguar kc-300 the plastic helical gear on the gear meshing to that of the shuttle hook came off causing me to remove that part from shaft and repress that plastic back to its gear again now im having slight timing issues and thinkin of re timing it. This singer got the exact same mechanism principle and got now an idea to easily retiming it again nxtym i got slight runningstitch skips and horrible zigzag issues, one NOTE of advice as well when retiming make sure to have a new straight needle. I suspect that caused me lose timing again after switching to new needle as well. Thanks!

Yes, for us dummies, pointing out the gear, and explaining what type tool will need to loosen and tighten the gear. The rest of the video was so well done. You explained, showed and repeated the instructions. But the timing can't be done if we can't find the correct gear, and loosen it and tighten it.

Good morning. I have a singer 740 and I have just tried adjusting the timing. But if I move the nut at the bottom of the machine, everything moves... I don't know if you know what I mean... When I sew the needle touches the bottom part, bends and breaks. So I am sure it's the timing. But how do I fix that?

If you loosen the screws of the gear underneath your machine, you can go back to the top, underneath the bobbin, and slide the hook clockwise or counterclockwise with your fingers. He explains where it should line up :)

I understand what you said about lining up the needle with the hook, but what do you do to get it that way? I didn’t see you adjust a screw or anything.

Somewhere beneath the bobbin carrier there's a pair of beveled gears (bevel gears engage at an angle, to transmit power around a 90 degree corner); one (vertical axis) is attached to the bobbin carrier, and the other (horizontal axis) is attached to a driveshaft which runs from a support at the right-hand end of the machine to a support on the left of the bobbin. You want to loosen the setscrew(s) in this gear so that you can turn the bobbin carrier into position without turning everything connected to it through the gears. This gear will just spin harmlessly on the driveshaft.
It's probably possible for this gear to slide along the shaft as well as rotate; you want to be sure that doesn't happen, or the teeth won't engage properly with the mating gear. There should be no visible free play between the gears when you're done.

@@markmarkw1919 thank you for this explanation. I too was wondering what screw I was to turn to adjust the hook position. I feel sure with your added information hubby can fix this if ever needed. He is blessed with great mechanical abilities. So nice of you to provide an answer for those of us who lack basic knowledge. Otherwise this was a very good and helpful video.

I have a 750 touch n sew. My needle is being pushed to the left by the hook. Per research on youtube my timing mark is off on my needle bar. Im hoping moving the bar back up to match mark will resolve my issue. Any thoughts or video would be appreciated?

Happy new year friend, first of all I want to thank you for your patience and generosity with these good videos. My machine is a model 401A singer, the guide marks for the height of the needle bar are down and I don't know what I should align them with. I tried measuring the height between the needle and the flat iron from 13.5 to 16 increasing 0.5 mm each time I tried to put it in time with each new height without success :'( before, the machine entangled the thread below the fabric, now it wont even grab it, I have a lot of sewing pending and I have no money for a technician, help!

Does that timing also time the zigzag point? Because my electronic power control machine is in the middle of zigging after the needle is in the material causing every zigzag pattern to come out the same, without clear patterns. It's pushing the material in both directions and instead of a clear zigzag it's a very straight stitch with very little zigzagging. It's happening on all settings of zigzag. Thanks if you're still around!

Great video but we have a problem that when you try to sew it stalls after 1/2 to 1 stitch and starts beeping with all the lights flashing. We have a Singer Confidence 7363. The mechanism moves fine with hand wheel. Some resistance but not a lot. Not sure how much it is supposed to have.

I found an easier way where you don't have to take apart the machine. Open the spot where the bottom bobbin is fed. Take bobbin ans plastic piece thst sits inside of thst area. Then hold the mechanism thst spins ans twist the up down knob. I did it and it worked better then taking apart the damn machine
