  • Scott's unconventional dance moves cost him more than just the competition.
In this scene: Barry Fife (Bill Hunter), Liz Holt (Gia Carides), Scott Hastings (Paul Mercurio), Fran (Tara Morice), Shirley Hastings (Pat Thomson)
    About Strictly Ballroom:
This wildly off-beat comedy is about a male dancer who refuses to follow the accepted rules of ballroom dancing and creates his own style of choreography, which infuriates the ballroom dancing establishment. Before he's scheduled to compete in the Pan-Pacific ballroom championships, he's forced to take up a new partner, a beginner who initially seems without promise. With his help, she turns into an assured and wonderful dancer.

There's so much going on here aside from the dialog. The characters' appearance, makeup, clothes, actions, attitude and more. Every little thing tells you who each character is and their motivation. It's like a visual poem. If you look closely, you'll be amazed at all the little things Baz Luhrmann and the crew did to make this movie a classic. That's why this movie is loved all around the world and continues to find new audiences who weren't even born when this came out. This movie is wonderful. This movie is Love.

Doug and Shirley are still some of my favorite supporting characters ever

Doug is a GREAT character: in mythological terms, Scott is The Champion who is thrust into The Hero's journey because of his intuitive rejection of the false paradigm of the dance world in which he lives, but Doug is The Wounded Hero who is trapped in The Underworld (a fate he chose because of his love for Shirley), who reveals himself at the critical moment and saves The Champion. In saving Scott at the crisis moment, Doug bares his shame and risks being discarded by everyone he loves, in order to save his son and set The World free from the darkness.

I've had to teach Baz Luhrmann films more times than I care to remember. The only thing I like about them is they're easy to understand - largely because the guy takes film techniques and throws them at you with all the subtlety and finesse of a sledgehammer. But, his stuff is still better than the mediocre quality of pretty much every other Australian film or TV show.
And I am an Australian :P

I love this film 💖 I also loved the original stage show of "Strictly Ballroom" when it premiered in Leeds. It was almost exactly the same as the film, but by the time it went into The Piccadilly Theatre in London, although still great it was very different from the original🥰
I won't say on here what I thought of the more recent tour😢😅

Always loved that man to man chat with his Mum's dance partner and he's taking the lead but everything he's saying is rubbish and said very faffy.
It's a very funny and well played scene.
Also love that Fran is in the back dancing the lead with a woman and her posture is horrific.
