About Strictly Ballroom:
This wildly off-beat comedy is about a male dancer who refuses to follow the accepted rules of ballroom dancing and creates his own style of choreography, which infuriates the ballroom dancing establishment. Before he's scheduled to compete in the Pan-Pacific ballroom championships, he's forced to take up a new partner, a beginner who initially seems without promise. With his help, she turns into an assured and wonderful dancer.

I loved Pat Thomson in the and also the BBC television series Boys from the Bush. A much underrated actor whose screen career was taking off. It is sad that there is very little online about her. She was brilliant 😊

3:07 - Scott throws Liz into a Dulaine lift - a very dangerous aerial. Then about the 3:20 mark - into a floor sweep! THIS IS NOT SAMBA DANCING, SCOTT! IT IS NOT SAMBA AT ALL! YOU ARE TREATING IT AS IF IT IS A THEATRICAL ARTS DANCE! IT IS SAMBA AND ONLY SAMBA! THAT IS WHY YOU GOT DISQUALIFIED, AND YOU DID NOT WIN THE WARATAH CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!
Charles Smith in Scott's defense they got boxed in anyway. All bets were off at that point, may as well go down in style ☺

:) Ah the floor sweep. It was introduced into the latin Samba in the UK in 1983 first danced in an open competition by Espen and Kirsten Salberg. How do I know? My dance teacher had gone to Norway to watch them dance, loved the move and taught it to my partner and I. It was so much fun to whip this out at a competition - although we did always have to be careful that we were in a clear part of the dance floor :) :)

I had seen the entire movie. Sadly, couple no. 100 - Scott Hastings and Liz Holt - because of Scott's excessive ostentatiousness threatening the destruction of traditional dancesport in the samba heat - ended up in last place (a tip-off that Barry Fife disqualified the couple) - and did not get the Waratah Championship trophy at all. Liz Holt, after the competition, tells Scott that she will never be her partner ever again because of Scott's overly flashy samba dance with her.

Is it me or does that look like a fncking circus all the outfits all the wild, ridiculous dancing?
If you watch ballroom and Latin ballroom comps from the era, the film compares as just a heightened version of it. In Same kind of vein as Muriel’s Wedding when compared to regular Aussie life- slightly exaggerated, but very much rooted in truth.
