- I purchased a Yuma 550 watt 3/4hp AC servo sewing machine motor to upgrade my Jet 9X20 lathe. i decided to do an Unboxing video and peek under the hood.

This got me thinking about upgrading my own Lathe. I decided to go with an AC Motor as i did not want to have to deal with brushes, or burned commutators should the motor ever lock up. plus the AC Servo motor was much smaller. Most of the AC servo's have a clunky, hard to use digital read out and push button speed and direction system. I’d love an update and running video of it on your Lathe if you’ve got it on there! Super cool! These motors would be awesome for smaller drill presses and mills too honestly. They’re just such killer value.

Thank you for showing, I have a 9x20 G4000 and your idea would be perfect in my case, however, I was hoping that you would show the mods to the motor and lathe, I know now that I have to try to fit it my self and see how I will and complete the mod, thank you and have a good day.
Now that was an unboxing on steroids! I especially liked how the control box was opened to see how difficult it would be to extend the controls for the lathe. Very well done. It would be nice to see a follow on to see how well it is working on your 9x20 lathe.
Eidetic Goone just got the pulley for the motor machined. And now i am working on the motor mount. Stay tuned!
Did the lathe require a different profile of belt, or were you just needing a different diameter that wasn't available. I have what appears to be the same BLDC 550 watt motor for my old singer 112w-139 walking foot sewing machine with the digital 4-button control. The motors are incredibly quiet. I think it uses a 15mm ID pulley with a 3/16 key. I bought a 45mm pulley, but the profile works with a standard v profile belt.
I have been wanting the 9x20 lathe (may be 8x16) to possibly do a cnc conversion on. So I am interested in your build.
The pulley that comes with the motor is wrong. I bought a used pulley that is the same as what my Lathe motor has. But it is for a 14mm shaft and the Yuma motor is a 15mm shaft. So I machined it 1mm larger to fit.

I want to make a tool post mounted milling/drilling spindle, one of these motors would be ideal for that.
Did you ever get this installed? Also, if so, how is it holding up? I have heard that these inexpensive servo motors are not always long lasting.
Sir, is the speed linear with the movement of the lever ? I noticed you change the program speed. Is the program speed the setting of the max speed the motor could turn ? This means if you set to 3000 rpm, the speed can vary linearly between 0-3000 rpm?
I am looking to use for cnc application. Does the input control take voltage say 0-5 or 0-10 V?
Do you think the motor is usable for a small bandsaw?
The variable speed makes me think of using it so my bandsaw can be used to cut metal

The controller chip looks similar to electric bike controller. Same hall sensors and three phase bldc motor
hy ! can u maybe help me a little ! i want to add such a motor on my mini mill x2 rom Sieg. and i would like to know if the shaft from the motor has the pin sticking out or is this a threaded shaft ? and also , could you please tell me if there can be new mouning holes drilled and tapped on the plate where the shaft is sticking out ?
Those are some tiny wires for a motor with that much power draw. I think im going to buy one for my Harbor Freight mini wood lathe
How is the low speed torque? I've read that a BLDC motor will never be great for low speed torque and a induction motor with vfd is much better.

did you watch the video? he had it at its lowest speed and he couldn't stop the pulley. so yea, they got torque.
Dang looks like you got the only one. I can’t find that thing ANYWHERE NOW. It’s all the cruddy little membrane buttons.
I checked out your videos and you never did a follow up video actually showing the installed motor with comments about how well it functioned It would be nice to know if it worked or not.
One thing I forgot to add is that these have Braking action! so when you let off the speed control, the motor actually brakes. which on a lathe, my need to have some adjustment to make work. I just got the pulley machined for it and will be working on making a motor mount next when i get time again. stay tuned for further episodes of this adventure!

It looks like Zamir Sew no longer has that model on their website. But if you search eBay for :sewing motor 3/4" a variety come up. Many look exactly the same but with digital up/down buttons. If i had the $$ I would like to buy a couple of these and open them up. I would be Dollars to donuts that they are exactly the same and could be converted to a manual speed control easily. But. It's a guess.
Yeap i was recently looking at the Consew CSM3000 but would have like to to be 'Less digitally controlled" and more manual (dial potentiometer etc) as well. Its a 1hp as well.. Sure there are plug-n-play controllers for its PCB board out there somewhere. Yeah .. too bad he doesn't respond to email these days. I've sent 2 over the pass couple of weeks trying to get info on the controller and pulleys etc (or even try to buy the controller and pulleys for my unit) .. yet nothing- no response . Others in FB groups have had similar experiences with this person. If you happen to get some info on this I'd be MOST Interested.. thx
Randy, this visually seems to be the the same motor and controller I bought off craigslist for my walking foot sewing machine. I located a source on ebay, but the guy selling has a store in L.A. where he sells it for less ($115) with free shipping.

For $115, the machine comes without a needle position sensor which is not necessary on a lathe or mill.
Compare the $330 kit to the $115 sewing motor kit.
Besides the pulleys, belt and simple aluminum plate, there is red box with a knob which replaces the foot pedal actuated lever speed control box used on a sewing machine. Is the red box necessary, could you easily build your own, or could you simply use the sewing machine lever sensor?
The lever has only a small range of angular motion about 15 or 20 degrees, making it more sensitive. But settings allow the controller to compensate somewhat for this increased sensitivity. When the upper speed limit is reduced, the lever range seems to be remapped to cover the reduced range of output speeds. The upper limit can be set from 500 rpm to the factory set 3500. But actually the controller's menus allow setting this up to 7000. The speed is shown on the display starts with 200 in increments of 100 rpm. I can hear that there are speeds between the 100 display increments that can be achieved by feathering the foot control. I am guessing that these are at 50 rpm increments.
In addition, there are internal menu settings that change the response curve of the motor, to give better low end control.
I think a workable speed control could be achieved by removing the return spring replacing the lever with a knob, and adding some stiction to prevent the knob form turning too freely.
I recently opened the box containing the lever.
Inside, a lever moves a magnet over this analog hall sensor labeled "49e 337". Probably this one:

The hall sensor is the only component on a PCB mounted inside the lever box. The lever box itself is bolted to the standard industrial sewing machine motor mount and can be removed with two bolts. The circuit board is mounted with two screws through elongated holes so that the sensor can be fine tuned with either a long or short dead zone.
If you used a similar mount, you might need to get some longer bolts to accommodate the plate. The motor itself is designed to be gripped on its side in some extruded slots. This allows for fore and aft positioning.
Anyhow, more info than you might be interested unless you get one of these. I have more that I have learned, but unless there is someone to pursue this, this post is long enough.
