It may sound dumb, but as a teen watching Davids play with glasses gave me hope that I could play no matter how bad my sigth was

Davids at Juventus dominated the midfield with his power and pace, earning him the nickname ‘The Pitbull’.
Football in the '80s, '90s and early 2000s was plenty of defenders and defensive midfielders like Davids.
They were the real reason why guys like Ronaldo Nazario, Batistuta, Signori or Shearer were not scoring 40 goals every single season, unlike nowadays when every year a new record is broken due to the ridiculous defending.
People today say Ramos or Chiellini are the toughest guys in football... Back then, guys like them they were just normal defenders.
EXACTLY!!! Defenders back in the days were absolute warriors units and DM'S were real defensive midfielders not freaking Deep laying play makers they werent as good on the ball but passing them was like trying to jump over a 7ft wall

Yeah, same as with strikers such as Haaland, midfielders such as Valverde or other defenders such as VVD. They are rare or even unique now but they were common player types in the 2000s.
Football has become much more frail. I’m not going to act like there were no players who were on the softer side back then but today it’s on another level. They’re mostly little princesses now who go to the hairdresser before noon and to the tattoo studio in the afternoon, and cry over tiny things like little girls. Maradona was badly slide tackled by three people in a row and still continued running.

Watching Davids growing up I never knew he was so short, he played in such a way you just wouldn't think he was.
It's the "pitbull effect" Edgar Davids had He was a pitbull for real when you look at some crazy looking pitbulls you can get the feeling that their bigger than you because you know in a fight they would munch you
I tried to emulate Edgar Davids every time I played. He was the Pitbull. An absolute dog on the field. With an engine that never gave in. I still have the nickname Vindog now, 25 years after I stopped playing. If only I could have been a small percentage as influencial on the field as he was. He never gave up. That Dutch team he was part of was probably the best team not to win a Copa Mundial. Those Surinamese players just clicked so well for the Dutch national team. If only they could have accepted them. Still goes down as one of my favourite players ever, especially when he was at Juve with Del Piero.

Zidane told this story: When they were playing at Juve, going to train or after that, they stopped the car in a parking lot and there was some teenager playing (on the concrete) and they asked the two legends to join and play with them. Edgar told Zizou "Let's go" and Zidane replied "We are pros, we signed a contract, we're not allowed to do this, we can get injured", and Edgar was like:"C'MON, THIS IS THE REASON WHY WE PLAY FOOTBALL.".

Davids organized a lot of street football tournaments throughout the late 90s and 2000s, and often would join or do one-on-one Panna matches. Truly "the streets never forget" legend
Edgar Davids was a spectacular legend where he battled from nearly being blind to being an extremely so fantastic footballer at every footballing clubs where he joined,good friends!!!I do hope to see him being a manager at a footballing,not necessarily from the top flight,Lower and Non Leagues and long live to him,good friends!!!:-D
He was already a fantastic footballer before being a bit blind. That’s a misconception. He got blind later. Just like Petr Cech who had already won the premier league twice before his helmet
Correction, they were not immigrants from Surinam, but have Surinam roots, Dutch born and raised. There is a huge Surinam community living for generations in Holland, delivering many great sportsmen and women.

I met Edgard Davids in Turin during his stint with Juventus. He was waiting in line before me at the computer shop just chatting with a friend of his. Believe me, his physical build was terrifying, a muscular beast, like a pit-bull. I pity the midfielders who had to face him.

I know it's an almost prehistoric era but a doc on John Charles would be amazing. Probably the finest player this nation has ever produced yet nobody outside of Wales seems to know him. He's got an amazing story and I think you'd do it justice with the heavy research you put into each video.

He was my favourite player when I was a kid. I also had to wear (sun)glasses for medical reasons outside doing sports. People often reacted weirdly to it so it was so important to have someone to point to. And I was also doing the most running of all kids - though in contrast to Davids that was because of a lack of technical skills.

I became a Barcelona fan because of Ronaldinho hype from 2002 WC. Few remember how bad they were until Davids arrived in January.
Climbed from like 12th place to 2nd, and then began the Ronaldinho era the next season. Davids indirectly helped to fascilitate Ronaldinho, then Messi, and without him who knows how football would have looked. I'm not exaggerating. Very influential player.
As a kid, i used to think edgar davids looks damn cool with those goggles/glasses. Very iconic and boy he is amazing
Wow, amazing research and all that original footage, on point, also script. His key attribute IMO is his staggering power and stamina for such a small frame, would not want to meet him in the ring. Zidane + Davis was epic. I recall watching him for barca for that half season, he was like a triple shot of esspresso for the team, and MVP almost every match.

Davids is from my village Coronie in Surinam. I also served in the Royal Dutch Army with his older brother Ricardo Davids. Edgar is one of the most fascinating players the world has ever seen. Because he played like a pitbull on the pitch, but was actually one of the most technical players ever. Quite the contrary.
That face off between Edgar and Messi arg vs ned at world cup he looked a real gangsta.

One of the greatest midfielders of the 90's and 2000. I have watched as a dutch person so many games of him, and he was very special. Unique. So strong and so teechnical.
I feel as though Davids legacy was really overshadowed by Seedorf
Seedorf was definitely the more technical player of the two, Seedorf was a scalpel, Davids a broadsword.
They are completely different players with different strong and weak sides. Davids is faster, better defensively and actually technically better in small spaces. Seedorf is tactically much better, has a better pass, better long shot.
As a kid watched both of them play together and Davids was my favourite over Seedorf, Rijkaard and Kluivert were also great, maaan whoever loved football had to love those Dutch teams of the 90's. De Boer brothers, Koeman, Van Basten, Van Der Sar, Gullit...
It is such a hard choice, they were all amazing.
It was magical, those Dutch national teams.

@@lucas82 not sure about the technical per se. I've seen them both play in the Dutch league and abroad since I was young. The scalpel / broadsword comparison is a very, very bad one. They just had a different style. It's like saying that compared to Ronaldinho Zidane is a crowbar. Just dumb.

he wasn't nearly blind at all, he had early stage glaucoma, he had surgery to fix it before it became a problem which also saved almost all of his eyesight, he then wore goggles to protect himself and prevent any further damage.

I remember playing against Edje as a young kid. One time during Davids Cup, and every now and then he just dropped by and played with us "young kids" on the streets of Amsterdam. It was during his Juventus days.
He had lots of love for street football (you could even tell by the way he was playing on the pitch).
He did a lot for the culture, and the kids.
Davids Cup, Monta, panna-knockout, masters of the game. He gave a lot of us a platform.

Just a note: the 5th tier, Vanarama National / Conference is not amateur. Most teams are professional, with some being semi-pro. Barnet would have still been fully pro. I think the highest amateur team in the UK is Corinthian Casuals, who are 8th tier.
For me as a kid, it was very cool to have such an amazing player wearing glasses to play football too, it was very iconic.

Davids/Seedorf duo was the midfield backbone of Ajax and the Dutch team. Davids never gave up chasing the ball, putting massive pressure on the other team. Called him the pitbull back then.
I've shown my 6 year old grandson videos of Davids. He has been complaining about having to wear sports glasses because of his eyesight as the other kids was making fun of him.
He's a fast little player. He won almost every race at his school's sports day last year. In a recent tournament, he carried his team, scoring 7 of his team's 8 goals, including 5 in one game and stopped the best team in the tournament getting a 100% record by scoring an equaliser. His team was the weaker of the club's two teams and the coach was an idiot who clearly had his favourites, so he's moving to another club - and one which even takes the youngsters to tournaments in Europe. He really was carrying that team because none of the other players would run up the pitch with him so he had to do it all himself, something that pissed him off. He's the white, 6 year old Davids. 🙂 I'm just hoping we can keep him going on this trajectory.
One of his best ever games was as a centre-back, against Real Madrid in 1995 in which Ajax won to a standing ovation.

Doesn't change much since a 'cabal' is a faction and the 'kabel' pretty much *was* a faction, it does sound a bit less devious to me.
