    You do a really good job at explaining why other cheaper options don't work well, while not belittling people who use them. The Milsim headset is good for what it is made for.

    I am a 14 year MilVet/25 year State Trooper SWAT (Asst. Team Leader/Sniper). I was lucky to be given a set of Com Tac 3's but was not able to get them to work with Baofeng radio's so I rewired them with a 3.5mm plug and I have a set up like you describe that works great!!

    This seems very very good I was going to do this myself actually so I'm glad to see it wasn't a waste of time. Now anyone wondering about water proofing there's many many things you can do, if you use common sense and be creative. With heat shrink, rubber cement and zip ties to keep plugs from yanking free clip them neat, even wire bundle flexible wire condition can be used and look appropriate and not all half ass. I have been poor many times and was able to modify things slightly to get way more performance out of them over the years and not look like a trash can handful. Might even do a video on e I get it all together myself

    One *BIG* issue with the Walkers is the lack of RF sheilding.
    Peltor Rangeguards are very similar, but have good RF shielding so you're not frying your earpro every time you transmit.

    The problem with these lower end setups is their weatherproofing and the 3.5mm Jack is not secure to the hand set. I'm also not so sure these units are rugged. I appreciate this work around and I'm sure it would perform in a pinch.

    • @bigpatty823
      @bigpatty823 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Been running a similar set-up for a while now, and haven't had any issues. The price discrepancy makes it worth it. A proper comms headset costs 10-30x as much as these Walker's, and that's not even including a PTT which is $150+ for a nice one.

    • @fl96inches
      @fl96inches 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Your high end setup still has to plug in to the radio. So, your weather-proofing is still compromised. As far as a secure connection, that's the same deal. However, I've caught my cord that runs from the radio to the mic, on a door knob, and ripped the radio off my belt. It was left hanging on the door knob, still connected.

    Ah, finally a "budget" comms setup that works and makes practical sense. Thank you for the explanation and insight; this is tremendously helpful. I already have a ham license, handy talkie (Yaesu FT-65), and the Walker Razors. I've been looking for a way to integrate them, and your idea about using the hand mic + headphone jack is perfect. I agree that there's really no need for a boom mic on the headset, especially if the hand mic location is right where the boom mic would sit in relation to your face anyway. -KI5LYX

    Does the Commountian's handset have a specific listen-only feature when an audio line is connected in the supplemental jack? By that I mean does incoming audio still get produced from the speaker in the handset even though it's connected to a headphone of some sort?
    I ask because I have a similar setup and the audio still comes out the speaker on the handset, which is overall unhelpful.

    Hope gawd that, as a ham in any public service comm response I wouldn’t be anywhere I’d need to worry about wearing a gas mask! Having said that, I’ve been in may situations where noise cancellation has been as equally important as noise suppression.
    I’ve gotten the impression frequently that hams confuse noise cancellation with suppression, the former being transmit audio and the latter being receive audio. I’ve seen virtually NO consideration given to noise cancellation in either commercial headsets intended for the ham market nor in TH-cam videos on the subject. It doesn’t take much to imagine situations where ambient noise needs to be cancelled in transmit audio during ham activities such as comms at air shows, running and equestrian checkpoints, multi-station net control points, field day stations closely approximated etc. Been there, done that, got the tee shirt and coffee mug.
    Surplus aircraft headsets and call center head sets can be readily adapted for the purpose and can be highly effective for both ambient noise suppression and cancellation.
    Best regards, n6med

      Same. I believe it's because the output jack on the speaker mic is mono, the cord is stereo, and the input on the headset is stereo. I think a stereo to mono adapter would fix it, but I haven't tried it yet
