  • I modified TOMYTEC 1/150 scale "The Trailer Collection" into a radio control car.
The motors are LA4-466FB for both steering and running.
Wireless communication is done with two RN4871U (Bluetooth module).
RN4871U must be set up for communication before assembly.
Wireless communication from trailer head to trailer is infrared remote control.
The transmitter is built on the breadboard.
The microcontroller used is ATmega88V for the transmitter, ATtiny3217 for the trailer head, and ATtiny412 for the trailer.
The power supply for charging the trailer head is DC 5V.
I omitted the trailer charging circuit.
The grid of the cutting mat in the video is 5cm square.
    TOMYTECのトレーラーコレクションをラジコンに改造しました。
    モーターはステアリングも走行用もLA4-466FBを使いました。
    無線通信は2つのRN4871U(Bluetoothモジュール)で行っています。

    【FAQ】
[Q] Can I sell your artwork?
[A] I often remove small parts from my creations to reuse in future pieces, so most of what I make no longer functions properly and therefore cannot be sold.
[Q] Won't exposed copper wire short circuit?
[A] The wire is an enamel wire (magnet wire) coated with insulation material on the surface, so it doesn't short circuit.
[Q] Where did you buy the parts?
[A] I often buy electronic components from the online stores of "Akizuki Denshi" or "Marutsu". Additionally, I disassembled a large quantity of junk digital cameras that I acquired from Yahoo Auctions and picked up stepping motors, gears, shafts, photosensors, ultra-small switches, and other components.
[Q] It looks like there are no marking-off line, but are you processing everything by eye?
[A] It's hardly visible on the camera, but I mark them with a needle or cutter.
[Q] Why don't you make printed circuit boards?
[A] Since I'm not mass producing, it's quicker to use universal boards. Also, to make it smaller, I sometimes have to modify the pins of SOT or SOP packages and solder them, which is difficult to do with a printed circuit board. Also, it's common to change electronic components after testing, so a universal board is easier to work with.
[Q] It's difficult to solder chip components even with a loupe, but you do it well.
    [A] I solder with a microscope.
[Q] I was disappointed because I thought even the power windows and wipers would work.
[A] Please give me a break...
[Q] How long did it take to create it?
    [A] It took several months.
[Q] Can you tell me the cost of materials?
[A] Since I use a lot of parts and junk parts that I already had, there are many items for which I do not know the price.
    [Q] Please make a drone.
[A] I do not have the knowledge to make a drone, so I cannot make one. Even if I could make one, I cannot think of any differentiation from those who are currently making drones.
[Q] Please make your micro RC car drift.
[A] As the car gets smaller, it's already a challenge just to make it run normally, so there's no room to make it drift.
[Q] Please make the model run faster.
[A] It is difficult to make a small model run slowly, so I intentionally run it slowly. Also, I do not make it run faster because it would look too toy-like and lose realism. Additionally, if the model is driven by a stepping motor, it cannot run faster.
[Q] Please modify a Hot Wheels.
[A] Since many other people are already modifying Hot Wheels, I currently have no plans to do so.
[Q] What is the development environment for microcontrollers?
[A] I write programs in C-language using Microchip Studio 7.0 and run them on AVR microcontrollers.

Crazy to think a hobbyist with understanding of their goals is able to outdo a mass produced item. I've never understood why there can't be one guy on the r&d team for these companies to make products that rival what hobbyists can do, but I guess that's the thing you run into when the bottom dollar is more important than the product.

@@jetjazz05 There's much more work required for a toy that is to be mass produced. But there are some which are mass produced, the TURBO RACING C72 for example is a good one.
The market is very niche tbh and does not justify the R&D costs sometimes. At the end of the day what sells most is the cars that drives fast and drifts and that's where most companies chose to invest.
If this guy somehow is able to make his own circuit boards and give the schematics, then i guess it would be easier for other people to build one themselves with easier soldering.

If you really want to learn I suggest following some tutorials for this kind of remote control, build up the circuitry on breadboard. Then when you are comfortable with that you could consider building something up on perf board like in this project. It will be a steep learning curve in the beginning though.

Look at all the precise work that went into the rig!
Sure, the magnification makes the control circuitry appear large, but those are some tiny chips and soldering joints. I didn't expect the retrofit to go through the lengths of rigging the truck's and trailer's lights, too. So, that's a pleasant surprise.
I wish the toys from my childhood were made with this much diligence and attention to detail.

Fantastic work, and being just a bit off from N scale model trains it might still fit in without anyone noticing. The operation is very smooth too.

I'm blown away by connecting magnet wire to magnet wire and not having it short out, plus all the other connections. I used to rewire tonearms and I thought that took some skill, HA!

Magnificent! The detail is astounding and the bespoke installation of the RC components is stunning.
You have some real estate in the trailer, what about a sound module? Revving engine and reversing beeps to start?
Incredible work. You deserve for this to go viral!
