  • Hey Gang. what an interesting past couple of days. Battling Wallpaper, Meeting New Neighbors, and Underestimating Concrete. Everything that we're doing right now in this phase of the project, is going to effect our future selves and more importantly the end result! Replacing the drywall offers huge benefits, as well as save us tons of time. And taking the time we saved and spending extra time setting the drain properly is really the first brick to installing a beautiful and functional shower. We hope you enjoyed this video and if you learned something let us know what it was down in the comments! Of course drop your tips and tricks for us down below so we can learn from you as well. Thanks for watching and we'll see ya in the next one!

      you were short on mud, why didn't you just put the old concrete pieces you had lying on the floor to raise (concrete level) by pushing a few into the concrete to displace the wet concrete raising the overall level?

    Ive been down so many of the same obstacle filled roads as you guys and I usually get a great tip or trick from Paul. I'll throw you one of mine this time. When you're chipping out that old concrete toss the medium and small sized pieces in a spare 5 gal pail and then when your ready fill the hole you use a lot of those old pieces to increase the volume of a single bag. The old concrete chunks make excellent aggregate!

      Find the joists on the ceiling before you begin and snap them with a chalk line. You need to hit the joists, so you'll need to use longer than normal screws to get a good bite. You also need to screw more frequently than normal drywall, otherwise it may want to sag.

    I have to say, I'd have figured out a way to replace as much of that old cast iron as possible, especially the underground stuff. I know Paul said it wasn't in the budget but I would sacrifice something else if I had to to get that old stuff out of there. The owners are already spending a ton of money to gut and remodel, another day's labor (if that) to gain 50+ years is a no brainer for me.

      @78consecratedcardsofart78 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @JJ Willywinkle, that makes good sense. I’m not a paper hanger myself. I’ve only installed it when I’ve had to. But I have done plenty of finishing and there’s a fairly substantial difference in the coverage we get and the amount of material needed on new work as opposed to old work. Obviously Sheetrock and joint compound are formulated for good paint adhesion . The more porous the surface is, the more paint is needed to obtain a beautiful, even and crisp result. When I do my prep work properly on previously painted surfaces I can usually get a beautiful finish within two coats depending much upon the colors I’m painting over. I am imagining how tight wallpaper must adhere to the dry porous surface of unpainted rock as the wet adhesive soaks in to thirsty drywall and joints. No wonder it would be virtually impossible to effectively remove wallpaper without exposing the gypsum, especially when dealing with a finer quality paper that’s been there for ten to fifteen years. It seems to me that the common practice would be the typical properly finished rock with a good coat of primer / sealer and a top coat or two of wall paint.

    Worked in painting, our company had this gunk stripper for wallpaper, we would apply it with a paint brush over the wallpaper and you would see the wallpaper turn into mush after a few minutes, it smelled awful but it did the job, all we had to do is just use a scrapper and it would just come out leaving a perfect drywall surface to prime.

  • @denisegaylord382
    @denisegaylord382 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If the wallpaper is put on unsealed (unprimed, unpainted) drywall. It will bond to that paper facing and the game is over. If the wallpaper is tight to the wall, sometimes you can paint kilz over it to hide the colors, then skim over it with drywall mud to smooth the wall out. It just depends on what type of paper was used, glues, and drywall or plaster & lathe. You may have to try a bunch of techniques to get if off the wall. But sometimes its just so much faster to pull the drywall down.

    It's probably too late for this but what we do with stubborn wallpaper is we just prime it with a really good moisture barrier primer. like bullseye 1-2-3 and it always looks really good. the only thing you have to watch for is blisters in places where the paper wasn't glued properly. (just cut them out and smooth with drywall mud)
    It'll save days worth of work

    Something funny I noticed. On the shower head riser the plumber went through the effort to tape the copper where their galvanized strap. Since it’s copper with a galvanized strap I assume this is to provide a dielectric break to be prevent electrolysis but then they just screwed a galvanized 90 on the top.
    There’s several plumbing oddities. The house is old enough to have cast iron pipe, lathe and mortar for their tile backing and a lead shower pan. These are all old school methods but then the cast iron in the wall had a tie seal. I would think that by the time they started using tie seals instead of caulked joints it would have been to a point where pvc would have been an option. Maybe it was an old school plumber (this is how I am today about pro press and shark bites vs solder) who said “I don’t want none of that plastic junk” and still used cast iron but updated his methods to save time.
    As for the no hub, be careful using the corrugated ones underground or slab. I’m not sure if it’s in the code or if it’s a local thing. I know Austin has their own requirements. They make a version called a shielded coupling that you’re supposed to use. The reason is that corrugated no hub sleeve will rust but a shielded coupling has a thicker stainless steel sleeve. However that’s just code, from a practical point of view the one you used will work fine. It’s surrounded by concrete and right below a sealed shower so it shouldn’t get that much moisture.

    Just bought a house ... and it's lathe / plaster walls. Electrical is wired dorky as hell ( switched neutrals all over the place ) extremely short tails in the boxes so changing switches and outlets is hard. Kitchen has only 1 20a circuit with 3 outlets on it. Lights flicker everytime stove elements go on.
    Hallway with no outlet and only 1 switch for the light. All lights are on 1 circuit. So trying to think ahead to my needs and desires. Bathroom will be the first remodel. Thinking that I'm going to simply rip out all lathe plaster walls ( except internal closet walls ) and ceilings. it will allow me to upgrade wiring and I know how to patch drywalls. But that information of unpainted drywall with wall paper on it .... is a great thing to remember. Paint the wall before you paper.

    What you can do is take the fiber mesh tape and just roll it out and float over with 30 or 45 min DWC. You will have little tiny threads sticking up from time to time I wouldn’t even sand. Just scrape off the high points reflate again with 30 or 45 min, before moving to a final all purpose mix. The thing about the tape is if you need to cut out sheetrock for the wall block, you can screw the sheet rock (general 1/2 is going to sink below the original layer because drywall crews just saturate the wall with compound way back before DWC was 10$ a bag. You can fill up with mesh tape the repair area and then once it’s reasonably level with the original surface you can fiber tape over it. I do this all the time.
    The only reason I would _not_ do meshtape in a formal bathroom is because the original sheet rocking job may not have used moisture resistant sheetrock (like 90% of the time) and you want to do the job right from scratch. But I would take the wallboard out anyway if that was the case. Wet areas tend to have problems in the wall you really want to fix. There are other ho-hum ways like prefloating the wall and using oilbased primer on the wall then mesh tape or actually putting the mesh tape on the wet primer and quickly painting over it (you have to prime the tape on a dry area and Staple bulges) Theoretically that would create a more water-resistant surface. Then float over the whole thing when it dries as described above.
    I love mesh tape, it’s a handy mans best friend

    When my family moved in to our current house, we removed all of the drywall. It all came off pretty easy. In one room, there was 'just' a border in the upper middle of the wall.. The border was attached to the wall using vinyl on vinyl paste (for attaching a border on top of wallpaper). I ended cutting through the drywall top paper on top and bottom and pulling the border and paper off. Went out and bought a 12 inch drywall knife and floated joint compound over the damaged area.

    I'm surprised you didn't elaborate on the 90° bends more. The short or tight 90 should not be used in drains at all and is intended more for pressure lines.
    The wide 90 comes in two or three sizes and the wider 90 should be used in ground or under the sink in a trap depending on the diameter.
    I wish there were more videos like yours, but then again, I'm glad there isn't!
    Great demos!

    The people who did my house also did wallpaper straight to drywall. That is why we also decided to just put on 1/4" sheet over top. Except for the door wall. We pulled that 1/2" off and redid that wall since we did not want to worry about fixing the door jambs. Those steamers work only on properly prepared walls before they wallpaper. I want to find the guy who invented wallpaper and have a "discussion" with him.

    Yep, I learned years ago as a DIYer, that wallpaper on bare drywall is a no-win situation....either take out the whole wall or put 1/4" drywall over it if possible. Wallpaper over latex enamel paint is always the easiest to remove. That little battery-operated hacksaw works like a charm! That Hope you are going to show the finishing of that shower. Thanks for the video!

    Go to sherwin williams and get some romans wall paper remover. Make sure you use a encapsulating primer after the paper is removed so the glue doesn't reactivate when finish coating.

    This is why in my own house I bought a steamer and after about 20mins I called my builder friend and said if I demo it myself and buy the new gib and pick it up with my trailer and then helped him hang it. When you do it that way. It’s cheaper than paying a builder to remove the paper

    I have had to remove drywall because of wallpaper, I have been able to get it removed to repaint and I have also painted over wallpaper after oil based primer was applied. I feel your pain.

    My house has a bedroom that still shows the scars of a similar mess. My wife did the removal as well as it could be done, and we somewhat poorly skim
    coated the wounds with joint compound, to just get done. I might panel that biatch, this fall.

    @3:12 the blue wallpaper looks like it has a special waterproof coating on it. In a bathroom, I put up some wallpaper that had a foil base. I'm glad that I didn't need to remove it.

    My favorite tool for cutting drywall or plaster is an oscillating multitool with a carbide blade. Bring a shop vac into the mix and you hardly make a mess.

    Sometimes you just have to weigh the costs of labor and materials. Just did that with a faucet that refused to quit leaking. Replacing the parts didn't work. Too much time was being wasted. Gave up and did a full replacement.

    When wall paper is hung on unprimed drywall it is not coming off. I just removed a boarder. The ceiling paint was done 1st and brought down 4 incinhes or so. The wall paper came off the ceiling paint much easier than the wall paint.

    All of your videos are great,. Love to watch them. Regarding the wallpaper removal. Before installing paper, the walls must be primed and a wallpaper sizing applied. Probably not done. That's why it was so difficult to remove. Many times, when I run into this, we remove what we can and skim coat the walls. I regard to the paper that came off easily. It was probably "strippable" wallpaper designed to come off in one sheet. It could have also been vinyl fabric paper which is often comes off in whole sheets. We use diluted vinegar as wallpaper remover and to wash the paste off before painting; Keep fighting the good fight. Thanks for the videos!!!

    Wallpapers 🤢 are the bane of my existence! We bought a 1972 house and every wall in every room is wallpapered. I tried removing some of it but in a fit of cursing started removing wallboard with it. In the end I did exactly what you did and just ripped off the sheetrock. Just like you I found black mold behind the sheetrock. Sometimes you just got to go with what your gut says in the first place and save yourself time.

    Big thumps up from DK (Denmark). It's cool to see the pride and hard work you put into your projects, wallpaper removal is a bitc...... Also, I remember the episode where you put a drain pipe through the clay soil and the foundation of a house.... a lot of hard work, you are lucky to have each other, but you know that already.. It's interesting to see the different building techniques that goes into the US house constructions compared to Nordic/European buildings. You should do a builders road trip to Europe at one point and make a "show of it". Cheers and all the best to the both of you.
