There are too many knife reviewers. I just watched another guy baton a log with a 6" knife JUST to have something to do for his video. There isn't 20 min worth of stuff to say about a metal thing thats been around since cave men. THIS dude just briefly ran through like 10 knives in 1 video and I saw about as much of each one as I needed to. HE appreciates your time. And now I know I want that SCAR Bear knife from the thumbnail... job done.

Handful of years later, no one remembers most of the knives featured in this video. But as others in the comments section have pointed out, Kabar's line of Becker knives is still going strong to this day. Likely will be, for many years to come.

    KaBar/Becker BK2
    Buck 119 Special
    Buck 620 Reaper
    Swiss Army Knife
Those are my knives, and they do everything I need them to. I highly recommend them. Also, although you can get knives that are pretty much designed for batoning (like my BK2) using a hatchet is SO much easier and it does the job much better than any knife ever could. For that, I recommend the Fiskars hatchets.

For a little more money I would go with a wooden handle hatchet like the Husqvarna or Marbles

I'll just stick with my BK-9. It's never failed me after 20+ years of hard use. It's been my " go to" knife and why change a good thing? It's a beast of a knife and can do whatever I throw it's way.

    My 5 favorite knifes :

I am planning on picking up a Morakniv bushcraft for my all-purpose knife. So many glowing testimonials for that company. As for a budget-friendly "one-tool option," I chose the Kershaw Camp 10. It's a versatile medium-sized chopper for under $40. Kind of a kurki-style knife with a really comfortable/grippy handle and high-carbon steel blade. Razor sharp out of the box. Many positive reviews. Affordable. Highly recommend.

I don't wish to burst anyone's bubble about knives, But let me say something about knives.
The survival knife is the one you have on you at the time you find your self in a survival situation. Most likely it wont be a belt knife unless your carrying a folding belt knife, which is legal just about every where. This knife was selected by you for its durability and blade strength and most important its ability to stay sharp. This is what your going to rely on!. All else is what you PLAN on taking with you for an outing into the wilderness. If you go down town toting a big Bowie knife on your belt, you can darn near for sure scare someone and the cops will be looking for you.
to carry a knife all the time is to have a need to be discreet!.
I went into a Tractor Supply store a while back and was standing next to a cowboy, wearing a Bowie knife, a revolver, arm guards, a well worn cowboy hat. And boots to match, he really did have a need for these items, his life depended on them. A discreet knife would be a small belt knife, nothing so imposing as to cause alarm a small folder or a straight knife would pass ok.
Survival is what you carry at all times. these are the items you carry with you where ever you go. You are not preparing for an unexpected tour of the wilderness. That why its called SURVIVAL!. Unless you carry a light backpack with the essentials for such an event, where would you carry extra food, a large knife, a light weight bed roll, camp fire starter stuff, an extra sweater etc......
Whats right for an author or a naturalist, a columnist my not be right for you. Before YOU finally settle on the perfect knife, you''ll probably have bought a half dozen of them. My wife has bought me a couple knives and I don't like any of them, except a small well made pocket knife, which would do fine for a survival knife in a pinch.
All that said , I very much like medium to large knives and carry a medium pocket knife.

I am good friends with John Luthy, the designer of the Papa Bear and he is one big guy, hence the big grip. He spent literally 20 minutes explaining the survival applications that went into the design of that knife, drawing from lots of personal experience in the USMC as well as an outdoors-man from Wisconsin. Good video, quick and to the point.

Undoubtedlly yes, but steel snobs with big wallets just dont care, another community ruined by elitism, in condor they worry about performance more than elitism, that why thei stuff is meant for rugged use, as seen by the argentinian whi work daily with their stuff.

I normally avoid knife reviews as I love the few I have and don't have a reason to purchase anything at this time. However, this was an excellent review. For the manufacturers.... that are reading this... this guy is great. Not biased as far as I see it, and he spoke honestly about each knife. I now have a couple ideas for my next purchase, or at least recommendation.

I just received a knife from Schrade with the nylon sheath and I love it so much. Since I already was familiar with the Schrade brand and having seen this knife on their web site I ordered it and was really amazed when it arrived and I had the opportunity to use it. The knife have a full tang blade, and rubberized handle with grips which make it easy to hold. This is my first fixed blade Schrade knife, but not the only fixed blade knife as I own many others also.

Say Heah Tim, WoW is this summer going fast, I'm the summer I like to incorporate a long knife to help me with the brambles, But when you mentioned a One Tool Option, right away I thought of my Potbelly, I bought it together with the Parangatang which I use alot as one of my long knives, But the Potbelly was a stepping stone for what now is one of my Fav's One Tool Option. My Ratweiler. What helps me alot, For a big knife, the choil allows me to do fine work with it, Although I teamed mine with the Rodent Solution, I basically just use the Ratweiler for everything. I also started using my new found large knife that I had for a while now, I bought it more as a chopper, But when my BK-9 out chopped it, I sort of put my BK-4 aside, Then I started using my Summer Long Knife to clear the Brambles then the light went on. It is called a Machaxe, It's OK using it that way, But I like mine just a little longer. But when I realized for good it sliced and did some of the fine work, The light went off again. Why not just use it as a long knife. A tool was born. I did take it out this weekend, But as my large knife, I teamed it with my BK-2 and it's good, But I think I will try teaming it up with my BK-10 next time. But since I don't carry both knife at the same time, Don't get me wrong, So far that combo is working out great. Actually tgere really isn't a whole lot of difference in thickness, maybe a 1/16th" That's not that much and besides I did wear my Mora 510 as a neck knife and in the cabin, We went out for a Bush Craft 4th of July weekend, But all we're doing is feeding our faces heh heh heh, Anyhow, I Wish you a Happy and Safe 4th of July.

If I walked into 1 store with all of these, I'd be paralyzed by indecision! Lol. I've recently gotten the Mora companion in black. Yes, I ground the spline to 90. Then I used a Verde salsa for a spot patina followed by the Apple cider vinegar. Wrapped the sheath in bank line. All of which I found from TH-camrs. Such a wealth of info out there. The knives turned out great!

Best "survival" knife will ultimately be the one you have on you at the time you are in a "survival" situation... You will adapt from there... good to look at different types etc, but know in your heart that a knife is still just a tool, an extension of yourself, that is the true survival tool... knowledge, knowledge knowledge, and the wisdom to know how to make incorporate that knowledge into any given situation, that is true art of survival...

    Just signed up,
Hope you offer on the job training for what you show, your showing what they look like an a few spec's is nice for eye appeal. Its to bad that ammo was'nt as easy to order as bushcraft, survival, camping , food prep knifes, a knife for every occasion, a steel selection as well. Reviews are super great but fact is, we all pretty much have to buy knifes until were broke or get lucky and inherit that old hickory when grandpa kicks the bucket that he used and shared with grandma at dinner time. Yea as many knifes as comments, i stopped counting mine a long time ago, like some one said, you cant carry them all, yet i don't even consider selling one. Knife lovers are just that, we are under there spell. So as for me, i say thumbs up and keep showing with the spec's and throw in a little wood occasionally just for good measure. Thanks again I'm sure i will enjoy watching while i clean and sharpen mine, and even see one or two i cant live with out. HAPPY TRAILS !!!

Cool video. I just have one question. None of those knives look used.... how can you be sure that they are "the best" survival knives if you've never tested them? What if they don't preform how you expect them to? But again, cool video.

    • @SteveSmith-sd5hq
      @SteveSmith-sd5hq 8 ปีที่แล้ว

***** Well to me a survival knife is a knife that can do everything- small and big stuff. Can make feather sticks for a fire, and can also baton (I never chop with a knife.) And you have to remember that in a real survival situation you might not have a hatchet with you. I know that when I go into the woods I don't always carry one with me. I carry my knife that can, essentially, do the same thing, just not as well. I've been eying the Esee 6 for my next knife, but you say you can build your own knives? Is it expensive? It is difficult? How can I get into something like that?

    • @SteveSmith-sd5hq
      @SteveSmith-sd5hq 8 ปีที่แล้ว

***** I don't only go into the woods to camp. I don't know about you but when I'm hunting, or on a hike, I don't want to be carrying a tool that I won't be needing unless I get lost and have to spend the night. That's why I don't always carry an axe/hatchet- I'm not going to use it, and it's just extra weight. If I'm going into the woods to camp, then yes, I'm going to bring an axe/hatchet with me. That's why I carry a knife that can, if needed, do more than just small stuff. It can, if it had to, baton/split wood, as well as small things, like feather sticks and gutting fish and game. That way I don't need to carry all those extra tools with me.

Steve Smith Maybe it's possible he tested a different actual knife but of the same model to judge them but used new ones in the video for appearance so people know what it looks like that they might buy.

  • @paulie4x1

Say Heah Tim, Thanx, great review. I have the Benchmade Bushcrafter #162, F.Y.I. for a very reasonable price, I got the Frog for the Dangler Ring on the sheath from Battle Horse Knives. It matches very good and I really like that sheath alot better now. I also got a similar set to your O.K.C.'s I Got THE Ranger RD-9 and the Afghan both in the 5160 and the Hi-Viz Orange Handles, I have a nice story with that steel and the RD-9. I just pulled the trigger on a Mora Hatchet and the 2000 both in the Orange so they'll match as a nice set. Seriously a great video. I would also like to Wish You a Happy Easter.

The Shrade could have been taken a step up by adding a compass although I don't know how to use perhaps on the end of the knife or on the sheath. Just my thought!😯

There are so many knives, so many reviews/videos, but I liked seeing some of the lesser known brands by lesser known companies. I liked most of them and would consider looking at them besides the more common fair. Gotta say tho', I have the Schrade SCH55 and for a smaller knife it is amazing. Such a feeling of quality in a small compact blade and just large enough not to feel undersized in my hand. I would still purchase the SCH42.
Maybe it seems redundant, but versatility of size is an advantage.

Did You ever see the WAKÒNDA knife?
It's a Swiss knife, designed by Jürg Schär and made by Thomas Künzi.
It's by far the toughest knife I've ever seen.
Got one in 5mm thick D2-Steel - that thing is just awesome.
As long as You don't loose it, You'll never need to think about buying another survival-knive again in Your life....
This fact makes it a bit less expensive... ;)
