Molly, this is one of my favorite of your tutorials, and that's saying a lot, because I like them all. This was so helpful, especially the way you started with the explanation of pen and ink calligraphy and how that translates to using the Apple pencil. I would appreciate even more tutorials comparing analogue and digital calligraphy. Thank you!

Thank you for making this! I've struggled so much with the streamline settings but I never thought about slowing down. I set streamline at 100% and slowed way down and it's improved my letters considerably!

You’re very welcome! I’m so happy my video helped you improve your lettering. I must say that I really hate how streamline gets a bad rep! Many people have the expectation that because it’s digital calligraphy, it can be done more quickly than with ink pens. Absolutely untrue! Doing it well requires the same pace as a real calligraphy pen, even though the tools are wildly different. :)

Great tips! How do we get flat tip at the end or at the beginning of our down strokes. For example downward stroke for a letter should have flat top. Where do we set this setting in the brush studio?

Thank you so much for the tutorial Molly. Just wondering if you had any experience working with Procreate Pocket on iPhone and if these techniques could be applied there too. Thank you.

Molly, I am a traditional calligrapher and typographer with many years experince in history hands but am new to "Modern Calligraphy" with Procreate. Your tutorial is EXCELLENT, thank you. Why do you refer to "analogue calligraphy'? Surely you mean good old fashioned pen and paper?!

What a great video! I’ve never learned calligraphy, and I’m here because I’m a digital artist working on a commission that needs some nice lettering. What’s interesting is that in digital drawing, one is supposed to draw fast and loose lines in order to keep the lines stable (especially with streamlining turned off, as it decreases the accuracy of the line).
I just think the differences are interesting, as I never would’ve thought to take this approach myself.

Thank you, Sofia! I’m so happy you enjoyed this video. You’re absolutely right that this technique is counterintuitive for many other types of digital artists. I also do some illustration and the differences between calligraphy and illustration on the iPad are just as pronounced as they are when using traditional media.

What does it mean when you press down with the Apple Pencil, and you start with a thin line but all of a sudden - with the same pressure- you get a blobby oval coming in and out of tip? I can’t find an answer anywhere beyond “checking pressure sensitivity”. I’ve been messing around with it but nothing definitive on the solution. I DO change the pressure sensitivity to allow a lighter touch (and alleviates the wrist pain), though.

      Hi Jessica,
Good question! This has happened to me, and is not actually a matter of the pressure sensitivity programmed into your brush, so I would recommend resetting the default settings that came with the brush (swipe left on the brush and you will find that option).
This issue could be caused by any of the following:
      • Adjusting the *tilt* of your Pencil - tilt and pressure are separate brush settings, and some brushes change shape based on tilt. It’s possible that even if your pressure is consistent, the angle at which you’re holding the Pencil against the screen is abruptly changing, such as when going around a curve.
      • An oil smear on your screen causing a disruption in the connection of the Apple Pencil with the software, so try cleaning your screen really well with a microfiber cloth.
      • An issue with your screen protector (if you use one) that is weakening the Pencil-software connection (not all screen protectors are great for drawing, unfortunately).
      • A matter of disconnecting and reconnecting your Pencil’s Bluetooth connection.
When this happens to me, it’s usually a one-off, random event, so I simply undo and keep going. If it happens many times in a row, I do suggest considering the factors listed above.

it was refreshing to hear an instructor admit that she was totally frustrated by Procreate. So, was I! I still am. My own attempts to add calligraphy to pictures created on Ipad were disastrous and discouraging. Apple classes did not help. The charming young geniuses at the Apple store were programmed to help users draw and paint a pre-designed picture.
They were not trained to help with calligraphy or other explorations - Few users of Ipad Procreate were interested in calligraphy.
. I left Procreate alone for years and did good old fashioned handwriting - with a wedge-shaped nibs. The effects were good but the process was time-consuming and the hand-written work but could not be edited. .. The great advantage of Ipad calligraphy is that it can be edited a zillion times over.
Molly has rekindled my enthusiasm for creative greeting cards made with the Apple pen on an Apple Ipad. It is still a challenge but a manageable challenge not a frustrating one.
Thank you Molly. I hope to take your class soon.
    Peace!
    Udhaya
