Oh! This is overwhelming Michael. I've never seen anything like it in my 70 years. In my lifetime we have had to beat rocks, get dust, use water as mirror, use pointed sticks with animal hair, use cotton spun and woven and tacked onto crude wood frames, risked cancers from our loved colors, I......just don't know what to say. My wife loves your British accent. You have an astoundingly enviable studio in which you have put much thought and effort, all in the space of a bedroom instead of a coveted barn. I admire it very much. Thank you. You have an excellent on-line presence working to the camera. I feel like I'm there with you as you explain. I related best to the foam cushion attached to your chair, being poured into a pillow-packed office chair myself. This is a good video. Please keep them coming.

Very interesting. I'm not contemplating doing this but who knows what the future will bring. I really love your style of painting. It's so amazing how you paint so realistically. People tell me that I try too hard to paint realistic paintings. But since my other hobby is photography I love paintings that look real. Thank you for all your help.

Thanks so much! I really like this. I’m totally into cameras and gadgets. I was really impressed with the tripod in that articulating arm also. I enjoyed the tip on how to use a straight it with one hand pulling it with the rice stuffing is the other side. I tried to say braced up against the other side but the word recognition change the settings. I’m dictating. I think you and I appreciate what you are doing very much. The pain in acrylics and have been always but I am interested in oils, and If I make that shift I will attend your school online to learn. My mother was in oil painter and I have some information stored in my memory banks that could be reactivated by a good teacher like yourself like you keep up the great work. Glenn

    • @robhov188

The tutorials are complete step-by-step and very helpful. Every aspect of the painting is covered.

    • @mariegutscher1183
      @mariegutscher1183 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi Dennis, I agree with everything Robhove188 has written.
In addition, I like that the tutorials are broken down into multiple videos and are in real time. Each tutorial has downloadable PDFs of the photographs and sketches. Some people print them. I keep them on my laptop so I can zoom in on them.
There is a discussion board area for each tutorial where we post photos of our paintings in progress and finished work. We discuss the process, colours etc. I find these discussion boards helpful as there are quite a few established/experienced artists taking Michael's course who offer excellent advice and encouragement.
Another thing I like about the art school, is that Micheal has been able to create a supportive international community consisting of absolute beginners like myself, to experienced artists who all want to learn his specific techniques and style. One is able to discuss progress privately, or publicly and it’s a great way to meet like minded people. I have found this particularly helpful as I live in a remote area of Ontario, Canada and do not know any other people who oil paint. Because of the art school, I can learn in the comfort of my own home and still be able to reach out to others - all while painting in my pyjamas! LOL

I'm replying MC Gutscher because I live in Kitchener Ontario Canada so wanted to say hi..but also, want to thank you for your thoughts on the on line school. I paint with oil, but I've mostly done portrait work..I want to learn how to paint the landscapes and I love Michael's style, but have felt unsure about joining because I really like to read reviews first. So thank you for posting your thoughts on it..I feel more inclined to join now.

      Hi Paula!
Thanks so much for your message. I know Kitchener quite well as my sister lives close by Fairview Mall!
I'm so pleased to have helped in some small way. A new friend of mine, Roena King is one of the professional artists taking Michale's art school. If you search her on TH-cam with "How to Paint a Red Parrot Tulip Flemish Technique Oils or Acrylic" you will see what she normally paints. She's extraordinary!
There are a lot of really talented accomplished artists participating in Micheals school and of course there are people like me who are very new to painting.
If you join, Paula, feel free to add me as a friend, I'd like to introduce you to Roena. She's wonderful!

I also love seeing the behind-the-scenes of artist's studios. I am new to painting, starting out with acrylics actually, and had a couple of questions for Michael or any others who wish to reply. First, is it common for artists to "specialize" in an area? Like you say that you are a "landscape artist" I assume that helps you stand out from others who paint anything and also, helps you get really good at a few specific things, like trees, water, mountains. Is it better to specialize or be more general?Second, I wonder what the art community, in general, thinks about this kind of "hyper realistic" style of painting? Seems like I remember hearing an artist once say, "if you want a very realistic painting, you should go take a picture (with a camera)" However, I know there are also a lot of people who judge how "good" a painting is by how "real" it looks. Just wondering what everyone thinks.

My biggest frustration in painting, is finding the correct lighting. I have little natural lighting and can't really rig up overhead fluorescents where I paint. I'm relying on modern bulbs with 5k lumens, but they do something nasty to the paint colors which look wholly unnatural to me. When I take my paintings outside in daylight, the color I thought was on my panel, looks a little different outside than inside. Even so, how does one adjust for or determine the lighting under which the painting would be viewed after being sold? I guess what I'm asking is, how does one discern what is the proper lighting?

If you have a good lighting store near you ask for daylight bulbs. If you don't you can find them on Amazon. Their a bit pricey but well worth the expense.

JT Paar I had the same problem with lights. I recommend that you go to a site on the Internet and learn about the different wavelengths and luminosity of lightbulbs in the coding system that shows whether a bulb is cool or warm weather is like sunlight or not and once you have that information order yourself five or six cheap light holders and about $10 a piece for the bulbs in the states and I can simulate sunshine or indoor light whatever. I don’t have any windows in my studio! Glenn

I have some Sunco led daylight brightness lights at my studio, I realized there were too bright, and too white, so I disconnected a couple, and on some of the others I painted the tubes ( just small parts of it, more like I stained them with a very thin layer of acrylic color that I made, like burnt yellow orange , I washed it with a wet cloth until I got the correct balance between warm and cold light in my studio. This is not a professional advice but I got exactly the light I wanted.
Also try to mimic a regular house light in your studio. nothing like a photo studio.
Also be carefull if you have too much wood in your studio , the wood will reflect in the walls and create a warm colored wall.
Paint your studio a neutral white,( not to bright, more like a very lite gray.)
      Led tubes are not hot.
Check this guys studio interior colors, very neutral, so the painting is the only thing important.

proper light with color temperature and intensity noted, since both affect the appearance of color - I've wondered how I could paint anything under artificial light so that it looks natural under natural light as it varies throughout the day; figured I'd just paint under natural light.

The first time I tried Micheal's technique I was using cheap acrylics and cheap paint brushes. It was definitely frustrating as the technique is different depending on the medium (I believe). Once I invested in some oils and slightly better quality brushes, everything worked out quite well! Good luck!

The oil paints and brushes I use are the less expensive 'student grade' paints & brushes. I was amazed at the difference compared to trying to achieve the same results with acrylics. Don't forget to invest in the medium Liquin that Micheal speaks of. I find it near impossible to achieve his results without it! Have a good day!

Lighting....lighting....lighting!!! What about lighting? I have a rather dim room, with regular incandescent lamps that do not give me enough light to paint on overcast days, or when the sun goes down. Many artists (which I have seem on You Tube), use brilliant artificial lights to paint by. But no one every mentions what type of light they use or where to purchase it. Local shops, near me, do not carry such things. I can buy a work light online, but don't know if that's the right kind. And video/ camera lights are way to expensive. How about really bright track lighting? There's GOT to be an answer to this. Can anyone out there help????? It's very frustrating to work on a painting indoors - thinking it looks good ...and then take it outdoors and find that the colors are wrong.
