@13:42 - I may have read Eli Wiesel's "Night" in school... So heartbreaking. Stories like this have taken on new meaning for me since discovering my Jewish ancestry early last year.
PIPPIN CAM and open mouth purrs ❤❤❤❤❤❤ Totally agree on The Girl with Seven Names. I love Elton John's music so i love his autobiography. The things that the "rich and famous" go through behind the scenes for the price of fame or doing things they love sometimes show they are no different than the rest of us.
Yeah, Unbroken and Night are at the very top of my memoir list, no doubt. Surprised by Joy is C.S. Lewis' spiritual memoir and I re-read it every few years and never fail to be mesmerized by it. And The Word Came With Power is a stunning missionary memoir that was a read-aloud I did with my kids for school and it brought me to tears and also helped me have some really challenging conversations with my kids about suffering, tragedy, and faithfulness.
This is so cool! I'm writing personal essays as a form of memoir and I've really been inspired by your author journey Tori so to know that you also love memoirs is freaking awesome ❤
Loved this video! Memoirs can be such another level of emotional and hard-hitting, as you consider that this isn’t fiction, this is something this person actually experienced. Some of my favorite have been the Night trilogy by Elie Weisel, Man’s Search for Meaning, by Victor Frankl, The Hiding Place, by Corrie Ten Boom, and (on an entirely different note) Making It So, by Sir Patrick Stewart. Have a great week!
@2:50 - Added "The Girl with Seven Names" to my never-ending TBR. A similar survivor story I HIGHLY recommend is "In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl's Journey to Freedom" by Yeonmi Park.
Admittedly I don't read a lot of memoirs, or non-fiction for that matter. But there are some memoirs that I really enjoy a lot, and yes some of them have really impacted my life. Some of my favorites includes The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Portrait of An Addict as a Young Man, A Grief Observed, Pimp, Christopher and His Kind, Mortality, Black Boy, Blankets (comic), and My Friend Dahmer (comic). There's others, but I'll stop there. Also you really like a lot of heavy books...I guess I shouldn't be too shocked. Great video!
I read The Girl With Seven Names because of you and loved it, so I feel like I can trust your memoir recs blindly hahah. Adding all of these to my list, hope some of them have audiobooks because I love listening to memoirs! Unbroken and Night are probably highest on my priority list now. And I will definitely look up Michelle Knight now, I'd somehow never heard of her before! Some memoirs that really hit home for me are Know My Name by Chanel Miller, Finding Me by Viola Davis, and a more fun one in Beyond the Wand by Tom Felton purely because of nostalgia 🥰
I love Memoirs! I'm glad you loved Girl with Seven Names, it's such a powerful read! I'm pretty sure a few of these have audiobooks. And I totally agree, that's actually my preferred way to experience memoirs as well. I love having the author's voice telling their own story.
Great video Tori, I think I'll have to add Gone To The Woods & Unbroken to my wish list. (I have watched the film of Unbroken and thought it was amazing). I read both The Things They Carried and If I Die In A Combat Zone by Tim O'Brien and they are fascinating reads. If you liked the Vietnam setting then i can highly recommend Chickenhawk by Robert Mason & The Greatest Beer Run Ever by John Chickie Donohue. Also can recommend: Touching The Void by Joe Simpson (This was number 3 on my favourite books of last year) Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer The Stranger In The Woods by Michael Finkel Eat & Run - Scott Jurek & Steve Friedman
I read The Girl with Seven Names this year. I knew it was the story of a North Korean defector but what struck me was the prejudice she faced when she got out, being unable to say she was from N Korea and the “business”that cropped up around taking advantage of people who have been through so much already. She was not welcomed into the world outside of N Korea. She had to keep fighting. I have The Things They Carried at home but have not read it yet. I also just found out that Michelle Knight’s book is free on Audible with membership so I added that one as well. Thank you for bringing attention to these books.
Here's my list of my favorite memoirs The great peace by mena suvari High on arrival by Mackenzie Phillips Not my father son by alan cumming his first memoir This is me by Christy metz I have the right to by chessy prout Brave by rose McGowan Lucky me by sachi parker The woman in me by britney spears Miss memory lane by colton Haynes Tell me everything by minka Kelly Inside out demi Moore
I'm not generally a fan of memoires and read few of them. The style that I do tend to read is very different. With that noted, I did like: George MacDonald Fraser's "Quartered Safe Out There" EB Sledge's "With the Old Breed" Adm. Sandy Woodward's "One Hundred Days" Heinlein's "Tramp Royale" But none was life-changing for me.
Excellent!. Thank you!
@7:37 - "The Things They Carried" was one of my required readings in college.
@14:48 - I've had a physical copy of "Unbroken" sitting on my TBR shelf for years. Need to get to it sooner than later.
@13:42 - I may have read Eli Wiesel's "Night" in school... So heartbreaking. Stories like this have taken on new meaning for me since discovering my Jewish ancestry early last year.
@8:57 - Wow. What a heartbreaking story... I've added "While the Locust Slept" to my TBR.
It really is. 💜
Will be looking into Michelle Knight. Great video, Tori! ❤
Thanks Monique! She’s a gem.

He really said, "my fans need me!" for this video XD

I’ve read some of Lewis’ essay work! Not that one, I’ll have to look it up. 💜💜💜
I just finished Night. You described it perfectly. It was an experience to read it and I know it will stay with me forever.

Thanks so much! I do love memoirs. :D I love the idea of personal essays, best of luck with your writing!
@@ToriTalks2 Thanks Tori! ❣️❣️❣️

Great list! I need to read The Hiding Place.

Added "Every Falling Star" & "Gone to the Woods" to my TBR as well.
I have a Yeonmi Park book on my shelf!
This is great! I'd love to read more Memoirs and now I have a great reference on where to start.
Thanks Tori!!
No problem! 💜
Probably the best go to channel for bibliotaphs like me.😌😇

If your open to Graphic Novels, both Maus by Art Spiegelman and Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi blew me away and are truly great reads imo.
I have Maus on my tbr shelf right now!

I’m definitely going to have to check out Gone to the Woods. Gary Paulsen was an author I loved reading as a child!
It’s SO good!

Yes! The prejudice was almost more heartbreaking than the first part of the book. She should’ve found people who were immediately helpful to her.
Gary Paulsen! Have you read Winterdance? A must read! Some favorites here plus some new ones for me to explore. Thanks, Tori!
I haven't! Thanks for giving me the nudge to finally make this video with the one you did earlier!
Need more Pippin Cam.
He agrees.
If you like memoirs of resilience and spiritual growth, I'd recommend The Autobiography of Malcom X as Told to Alex Hayley. It's fantastic.

I don't think I could read any of these books. I'm sure they are wonderful but I can't handle these kind of books.
That’s completely understandable! 💜
Shame George HW Bush's memoirs got wrecked by Bart Simpson. Bet he had a great underdog rags-to-riches story!
