    Although the new cars use a single lug nut, the older ones used 5. They could potentially get so hot on long runs that as they’re screwed off they could ignite the spilt fuel by sparking. Rubber build-up in the wheel well will catch on fire occasionally too. Especially at short-tracks where the brakes are being heavily used, they can glow bright orange/red. So there’s all manner of hot stuff that can set off spilt fuel.

      Do they have any anti-static equipment while refueling?

    Man, the safety crew to take care of the fire so quickly was pretty awesome to watch. The pit group are the unsung heroes of racing.

  • @SaltyFrosticles

    You can get ignition of the gas when the car spins its tires. The lug nuts/wheel nuts spark if they get caught under the tires when they leave. Rubber pieces from worn tires can ignite on the exhaust or brake components.

      Depending on what track they are at if it’s a short track with loads of breaking the breaks are 1800+ degrees so if the fuel touches a red hot rotor it will spark a fire also

    I still think one of my favorite NASCAR moments was when F1 Driver Juan Pablo Montoya moved to NASCAR and struck a jet dryer truck on the track, causing it to catch fire. (His name was referenced at 8:40 in this video - though not the incident in question)

    • @hehe-IgoBRRRR
      @hehe-IgoBRRRR ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Kinda sad though, not many people realize Montoya actually was a very decent driver in Nascar and is a good example that a driver changing motorsports won't always conclude badly. But unfortunately the jet dryer incident is his reputation..

    Only slightly over 500°F (260°C) is required for gasoline fumes to 'auto-ignite' -- you don't need a spark or flame, only a heat source greater than the ignition temperature of the fuel.

    My employer use to have accounts with most of the Nascar teams. Many are headquartered in Mooresville NC just North of Charlotte. I always enjoyed running service calls to the garages and watching the pit crews practice. It's amazing to see 4 tires and a fuel fill up done in 15sec or less!

    If you look closely, you can see that the exhaust ports come out of the cowling at the back, near the point where the fuel cap is located. As the car sits idling, there is an ignition source coming out of those tailpipes. Any spills that occur can drift over to a point where the exhaust can ignite it.

  • @davidbarshjr9854
    @davidbarshjr9854 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The ignition source is actually the brakes. If you ever watch a nighttime race, the rotors get so hot they will actually glow red, that is what causes spill fuel to combust.

    That level of training and self-discipline is impressive. They know to hold their breath if they catch fire. The fastest danger isn't even the flames on your skin, it's if you inhale the burning air. Scorch your lungs and you're done. Nothing they can do for you.

    Many of the fires are from fuel spilling down onto hot areas around the tire. That could be lug nits, breaks, and other things. Plus, during the removal of a tire, the lug nuts spark. The other scary part about some of these is that most pit road speed limits are 55mph with the slowest being 35 mph

  • @beccaRey

    Most over the wall guys in the pit crews are former college football players or NFL players. The crews practice during the week using actual recreation of the pits at their home shops. They film it from all angles, study it and look for ways to cut time, even if only a half a second.

    Was watching the race this past Sunday and a driver had a tire fall off. They said the guy responsible in the pits gets a few week suspension. Was like damn that's crazy. But I can see cause it's dangerous. Don't watch every week like I used too so not sure how long this rule has been around. More Nascar please. Maybe do some the best of Dale Earnhardt or Jr etc..

  • @jeff2545mp

    NASCAR currently has a pit road speed limit which varies from track to track (30 mph at short tracks, up to 55 mph at super-speedways). All the way up to 1990 there was no such speed limit and cars would regularly race down pit lane at full throttle on their way to their pit box while crew members were out servicing cars. A wreck on pit lane in Atlanta in 1990 in which Bill Elliott's rear tire changer, Mike Rich was killed was the incident that inspired the rule changes. Before the speed limit was implemented pit lane was an even more insane place to be.

    It's not the liquid that's the real danger. It's the vapors coming off the gasoline.
    Any spark they talked about can cause ignition.
    A normal pit stop with 4 tires and topping off fuel onky lasts 12 to 16 seconds.

  • @SoonerStoneAI

    You can get sparks from removing the lug nuts, or from lug nuts sparking under the tires when they leave the pits.

    The risk of pit lane fires is why F1 redesigned their cars so that they could do the entire race without having to refuel. It's a major reason why their pit stops are now _so_ ridiculously fast compared to footage you see from a decade or two ago. And because they now have to start the race with _so_ much fuel they had to majorly change the design of the entire fuel tank and fuel supply system to the engine, so that in the event of a hard crash there wouldn't be a huge spill and lethal car fire. The new "soft cell", self-sealing racing fuel tanks then made their way to most other racing cars, and you can even find them on certain road vehicles now and even modern aircraft too. Yet another way F1 is influencing the safety systems of motor vehicles in general (along with the invention of the monocoque or drivers "safety cell" which is also now part of most modern road cars as part of their basic frame design).

  • @tons0ffun519
    @tons0ffun519 ปีที่แล้ว

    One of the biggest factors to some of those fires were the fact the catch can at the back of the car wasn't fully engaged. A big safety change was to eliminate the catch can to allow the fueler to engage the can easier leading to less spillage. Especially with hot lug nuts flying off the wheels and causing sparks near spilt fuel.

    The problem is when the fuel gets down on the brakes on the rear tire because they are red-hot when they come in. That is what ignites the fuel.

  • @Titus-as-the-Roman
    @Titus-as-the-Roman ปีที่แล้ว

    Actually fire's are rarer than you might think, specially at pit stops, if it was the heat of the exhaust then they would be doing that all the time, there usually needs to be some sort of ignition, like a spark of a lug gun.

  • @ccramit
    @ccramit ปีที่แล้ว

    I know that in Formula 1, the brakes get so hot that they will sometimes just shoot out in flames. NASCAR cars don't lay into the brakes quite as hard as F1, but I wouldn't be surprised if the brakes started one or two of those fires with all that gasoline being sprayed around.
