Ben and Mighty Mouse were the reasons why I ever even looked at One, and I have been hooked ever since.

The problem about scaling is that MMA more directly related to violence and aggression. Inflicting intentional damage to the body of opponent if sparring. Other sports are less explicit in these terms. They are a bit more strategic and intelligent. So while smashing the face is not nation specific sport it is also less socially accepted. It's catered for certain personality. Yes, you can view training for martial arts as positive, it's great for fitness and mental strength, but who got time for that. It also requires certain personality and physique to be serious about it. There are easier way to get 6 pack. But unless you're under 30, it's not gonna impress anyone but gay men.

You sound like the type of person that claimed no one needed the internet, or who would benefit from a wheel.
Not saying mma is a disruptive invention like the above named examples but the sport registered significant growth over the past 10 years and is definitely far more than just "smashing your opponents face".
People can for example start with more soft sports such as Bjj, Judo, Capoeira etc. and then transition into more impactful combat sports like boxing or mma. And you certainly dont have to train at competition level in sparring, some people just like to train and get fit and they do not get injured more than in any other sport
