    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    THE DRUM FILL TO END ALL DRUM FILLS!!! In my opinion, this is one of the most simple, powerful, and musical fills you can throw into nearly any song. Naturally, it's something that John Bonham made his own and utilized to great effect. DISCLAIMER: Just like John Bonham, just because you CAN throw this into nearly any song, does not mean you SHOULD throw it into nearly every song. I didn't preface this in front of the camera, but it's really easy to overdue this fill if you are composing a drum part because it is so cool and easy to implement. Be like Bonham: use discretion.
    With that said, if you're not familiar with this fill, let's dive in. If you are familiar with this fill, maybe there's a way you can supplement it to make it even cooler!
    Here are some examples:
    Early version of this fill from Heartbreaker (Royal Albert Hall - 1970). If the timestamped link doesn't work, go to :36.
    Great example of Bonham employing doubles on the kick for this fill from Heartbreaker (How The West Was Won): • Heartbreaker (Live 197... (If the timestamped link doesn't work, go to 6:56)
    Example of this technique used in a 6/8 rhythm (I Can't Quit You Baby): • Video (If the timestamped link doesn't work, go to 4:45)
    Another example in 6/8 with the BBC Sessions version of Since I've Been Loving You: • Since I've Been Loving... (If the timestamped link doesn't work, go to 1:48)
    Example of this technique used in early Moby Dick: • Led zeppelin moby dick... (If the timestamped link doesn't work, go to 4:08)
    Great visual example of right hand doubles from 25 May, 1975 Rock And Roll Drum Solo: • Video (If the timestamped link doesn't work, go to 5:16)
    Great visual example of the right hand doubles from 25 May, 1975 Moby Dick: • Led Zeppelin - Moby Di... (If the timestamped link doesn't work, go to 9:04)
    Example of the fill using the right hand doubles in Hots On For Nowhere: • Hots on for Nowhere (R... (If the timestamped link doesn't work, go to 4:02)

      DUDE!!! You made my day! I'm a huge fan of your band, and your work in particular! When 'Feral Roots' came out, I was on the a short music tour of the PNW, and as I was driving the van late at night through the mountain pass in Oregon, I was just blown away at your ideas for compositions in each song; they were all diverse in their styles, but seamless and laced with soul. Needless to say, it made that stretch late at night a lot easier, and I've enjoyed it a ton since then. Great Western Valkyrie got my attention (OPEN MY EYES!!!). You've got an ardent supporter in me! I wish you and the rest of Rival Sons the best. Here's hoping for a safe return to the stage soon!!!

    John often followed Jimmy Pages guitar and would take the riff and make it his drum part for the song.. This is very unusual for a drummer who is usually locked in with the bassist holding down the beat or helping to move it around. And creating that solid foundation for the guitars and vocals. And often a very busy drummer flying around the drum kit playing both rhythm and lead parts just like Page and sometimes both at once! Page's guitar playing is the inspiration behind a lot of the very complex drum parts and solos on Led Zep songs. The triplet patterns John is known for is heavily influenced by drummer Joe Morello who is best known for his work with the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Also played in unusual time signatures. And John Bonham had about the best drum sound in the studio and live on a stage. .

    • @KickItLikeBonham
      @KickItLikeBonham  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That's how I learned to write drum parts - following the guitar. I thought that was normal until I got more experience. I always felt like, "Hey, it's the bass players job to keep up with us, right?!" Guys like Bonham, Keith Moon, John Densmore, and Mitch Mitchell all gave me the impression that you have all this room to work with in the space between notes. I've come to realize there's still a great amount of discipline and discretion in their playing, but boy, did it make my young mind explode when I was 12 years old!
      Great comment, man! Thanks so much for the contribution!

      To Sunlion Indeed. You are correct, Bonzo followed Pagey. If he hadn't Zep would have
      just been an ordinary band. He had big ears and ensured the musical conversation rose to a much higher level and would definitely never be forgotten. Master musicians tuned in to
      each other. One of my favorite drum sounds[check the floor toms], is Thank You. No one
      had such a huge warm sound until Zep showed up. I'm in Toronto and I just heard on university radio that Zep is tops in that world. Timeless stuff. Guess the emo thing expired.

    I've never seen your videos before. I am 64 years old and come from New York City so I sort Zeppelin 19 or 20 times. Three or four of those times I was right behind John Bonham in the sheets going around. I got a career out of learning how to play like that. having said that, I saw most of the great drummers from that Bearer. John Bonham is the scariest drummer I've ever seen. He defied laws of physics, do things. Absolutely not possible. I know you've seen the 71 or 72 solo and when he does the final triplets so fast that you can't see his arms, a couple of times he put up his arm twirling stick and used his foot as an arm and keeping up that incredible blinding speed the triplets kept coming with one arm up in the air. meaning he was doing it with his left arm and hand and his foot which is the fastest foot I've ever seen on a human being. no matter which drum set he played on it always sounded like John Bonham. it was truly a frightening thing to see. a lot of drummers white really speed players like Carl Palmer. So they did not understand what Bonham was really doing. he had Swagger and swing like Elvin Jones or Tony Williams, and he had a great feel for any song period. Play the Crunge you hear James Brown in 7/4. Put on hot dog and he becomes the best country drummer you've ever heard. but when it came to being the engine John Bonham was a one-off. we shall never see his like again. I didn't have any videos to watch just the records and live performances but I got pigs at every audition I ever went on because I did a fair imitation of John Bonham. same for Joey Kramer from Aerosmith as he told me so. so good for you for explaining how beautiful John's work is. Good luck son keep it up.

      If I remember correctly the the fast rolls you hear in the centre are called "Herta" they are a form of triplet with an unusual sticking "snare, rack tom, floor tom, bass" RLRK" but the feel is "RLR K" there is a pause between kick and snare, there are 6 of these rolls folled by standard triplet feel, on the outro there is a definate ending he reverses sticking between the floor and rack, is hard to explain it, @kick it like bonham may be able to, as for me that's the general feel, the tricky parts are the hertas, and reverse triplet sticking lol

    Hey Derek! I just wanted to ask you what camera do you use for you audio/video here out do you use separate video and sound and if so which brands and models? • @KickItLikeBonham
      @KickItLikeBonham  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Vincent! For the camera, I'm using a Nikkon D7100 DSLR camera. I bought it at Costco a while back in one of those bundles that comes with a couple lenses. I would recommend doing a little research on DSLR cameras, as you can find some pretty good ones for a reasonable amount. The only issue with them is that they usually have a 20 minute recording limit on videos. As in, you can record multiple videos that come out to longer than that, but you can only get 20 minutes in one continuous take. I don't know if all of them do that, but mine certainly does. For audio, I have an 8-input interface that's going into ProTools on my computer. So the audio and the video are separate, and then I edit them together in Cyberlink PowerDirector. The ProTools has been an ongoing experiment, as I don't have any formal education in mixing or engineering. I've tried to pick up what I can in professional recording sessions I've been involved in, but it's been a lot of trial and error in the garage and on my own. Still, it's a lot of fun to mess around with, and if you're going to be the one tasked with doing it all, you'll certainly come out all the better for it!

Once I got used to playing a speed king, it made it a challenge to adjust to playing anything else. I have a DW9000 pedal and an old Tama Iron Cobra pedal, and have found those to be incredibly delicate to the touch now that I'm used to the drag the speed king possesses. As a result, I've shied away from trying anything new for a while. I'd love to give it a shot, though. Is that a pedal you're considering buying?

      @@KickItLikeBonham Yes, I was thinking the same thing, trying to understand the timimg from listening to your playing. Can I ask you to explain in writing the exact timing of the fill? I think it goes 1 and(silent) LLRF, or maybe better written R_LLRF, so it is 5 actual sticks in a 6 beat time? Like 1 and 1,2,3,4. Or am I mistaken? Please excuse my bad understanding of the terminology just don't want to muscle learn it wrong and then have to work twice as hard to fix it hahahaha

    • @salsalover69laters

      Can I offer some advice for future videos? This advice is for you being able to make it easier for 'beginner' drummers like myself who are also not too good at reading music or understanding different timings like 6/8 or 16ths etc. Having watched a number of different drum tutorials recently, from very famous drummers, I find the most helpful set-up is to:
      First: show the parts at normal speed (like you do!) so people can instantly see/hear what it is they are about to learn as well as how the piece should 'feel'.
      Then: progressively slow the parts down to a speed that is much slower and best for learning the sticking/timing and to develop the muscle memory.
      Lastly: decribe the exact timing/sticking and play it at the slowest speed (i.e. music reading expanation of 16ths or whatever timimg is required).
      This way a begiiner can learn the sticking and timimg properly, and once they have the basic muscle memory down they can instantly speed up to original speed of the piece and concentrate on the 'feel' of the piece. The feel at normal speed will bring the coordination into line very quickly even without hours of muscle learning.
      Please don't take this as criticism of your videos. I've taught dancing and martial arts to beginners for years, so it's just a teaching set-up that seems to work for the majority of beginners and incorporates methods for different learning styles, i.e. those that learn easier by hearing, those that learn by seeing, and those that learn by doing.
      Cheers and thanks again for the great vids. Been having many 'ah-haaaa' moments watching them!
      For experienced drummers

    • @salsalover69laters
      @salsalover69laters 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      On second thought, after watching your vid a few times most of what I was recommending was in there already! Apologies man, like I said I'm not too good at the technical timing stuff, but with watching a few times the feel is obvious with repeated listening. Experienced drummers probably wouldnt have any trouble getting it all.

  • @duel2k7
    @duel2k7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A mention of the actual timing would have helped in adapting this to other stuff. The lick (I think) is a 16th with the left followed by a 16th note triplet of L R K. The whole thing takes up 3 16th notes all in all. This means for the double right or kick to fit in they need to be 32nd notes within the triplet.

    • @KickItLikeBonham
      @KickItLikeBonham  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's definitely a desire of mine everyday. I have a list of about 500 different ideas I'd like to film - finish covering Zeppelin's studio and live catalog, more lessons/tutorials, more of the original music I've recorded...
      I've got two young kids, a wife going through a medical program, and for a while now, I've spent half my week on the east coast of the US filling in for a band called, Get The Led Out, and then I'm back home in California to try and be the most present dad I can be to my kids. So, it's a weird dichotomy to exist in - I feel more comfortable with Zeppelin's music than ever because I play it ALL THE TIME (and still love every second of it), so I'd love to channel that into more videos for this page. But because of my schedule and priorities, I just haven't been able to put in the time to make videos up to the quality I'd like them to be.
      That being said, I actually did just start shooting some new footage for a video, and even if I have to piece it together over the next month or so, it feels great to finally get back into it! I'm working on constructing a Bonham Amber Vistalite kit that's as accurate as I can get it. I'm using RCI shells, and making sure all the hardware is 70's era specs (lighter vs the heavier modern hardware) and all the badges are correct and in the right place. So, I'm really hoping that's the catalyst for getting more videos made on a regular basis! 🥳
      Is there anything specific you'd like to see?

    This might have nothing to do with drumming but by some accounts John Bonham was a total bastard.😂 When I listen to Led Zeppelin I imagine John Bonham defiantly competing with the "band leader" Jimmy Page and many times upstaging him. I think a lot of the more egotistical guitar legends from the 70's might not have tolerated this.

    • @KickItLikeBonham
      @KickItLikeBonham  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Man, this is where my lack of formal education (and desperate need to educate myself) really expose themselves. The best I can describe it is: If you're counting in "1-E-And-A, 2-E-And-A..." it would be 3(Snare)-E(Snare)-And(Tom)/(Kick) - A(Snare) - 2(Snare)- E(Tom) - And(Kick) - A(Snare). Basically, the first kick hit is a 16th note that doesn't have a corresponding phrase (I think). As a result, the 2nd round of snare hits start just before the next measure / number. So, 1-E-And-A, 2-E-And-A, 3(Start Fill)-E-And-A, 4-E-And-A(Finish fill on snare), 1-E-And-A...
      Sorry for the lack of technicality on my part. Maybe someone with a little more expertise can help transcribe it if my description wasn't enough? Anybody?

      It's always great hearing from you, Martin! It's funny - growing up listening to Zeppelin, I've always based what I play on the drums around the guitar and trying to lock in there, as opposed to syncing up with the bass. Hey, it's the bass player job to follow along with us, right?! It certainly shaped the way I came up with drum parts though. I also loved the way John Densmore from The Doors played off the vocals. Ultimately, you learn to pull from whatever is necessary to make the best song, but I think it's nice to share in what seems to be a slightly unorthodox approach to composing.
