  • I carved 87 lbs of epoxy into a rainbow trout. I used bent lamination for the very first time and it turned out better than expected. I used a chainsaw and other tools to #powercarve this one of a kind sculpture. This was such a fun build! #Carving #woodworking

All the failures and problems with resin casting can be really discouraging, but its so satisfying to see you finally get it dialed in and have everything work exactly according to plan for the resin and wood. I love when expertise and planning turn into pain-free process. That curly maple is excellent. Beautiful sculpture, flawless execution. Great job.

The change in jaw actually made it look better because of where the wood pops out with a deeper jaw curve. Those thin fins were nerve-wracking with how easy they could be damaged with a mistake but you managed 😂. The lovely base of wood really made the piece stand out, I was considering how you’d mount it as it’s such a unique shape.

Looks incredible as always. I love that you try to get the little bits of detail in there too. I think the glitter works well for this fish but I hope you don't use it too often as one of the things I really admire about your sculptures is how clear they are. There's something almost magical about seeing a beautifully sculpted animal and yet you can see right through it to the wood. However, for this fish it really works and adds the water effect.

This is beautiful and amazing job. I love fishing and woodworking. I worked with wood for a long time and my stepfather was a construction worker he owned his own business. He paid me to carve wood and tile. He was very proud of me. Him and my mom passed away two years apart. Mom passed away from cancer in 2015 and my stepfather passed away from heart disease two years after. I have great memories of him. He was a great father even my birth father liked him. He appreciated that he was a good father figure for his daughter. I am handicapped so I have always needed assistance. I was given opportunities in school to learn woodworking and metal because of my disability. I kept working with both until I graduated college. I earned a master's degree in advanced science and engineering I took woodworking classes in the first semester and metal shop as well auto shop. I was the only female in my auto shop and I encouraged other ladies to join the next semester so there were five more the next semester. We built a wooden car with working parts and it ran on cheap gasoline. It wasn't legal so we weren't allowed to drive it on the street. Our professor built us a track on the campus. Other students came out for lunch and watched us drive the wooden car. It was a beautiful dark brown with red oak body and white cider side panels. I made the blueprints for it while the others got everything ready and we worked together to make it and we fixed a few flaws before starting it. It was fun. ❤

Female trout do not have a kype. Two to four weeks before spawning, male trout undergo physical changes that include developing a kype. Farm raised trout are harvested before they can develop a kype. I still like your sculpture even though the mouth is undersized for a fish that has a kype. Kype😀

    • @huntzz21

This is 100% correct. Males develop a kype females do not. It has zero to do with being a hatchery fish. Your brother gave you incorrect information. Methinks he needs to do a little homework before making such a claim. I’m sure he is a great guy, but in this case, his statement was/is false.

I don't care much for fish other then the ones on my plate but I like the craftsmanship and I actually really loved the work on the burl... I think I try another of your videos. I loved the interaction with your brother on the video and I liked how you listened to him and turned the sculpture into a "real" fish!!

This is amazing! If you ever do another one you should seriously consider adding some pearlescent or chameleon chrome powder!!

For those of you who are like me and aren't very familiar with woodworking, I learned recently that this kind of "Tigers Eye" effect is called Chatoyance. It is most often seen in wood and gemstones, but it essentially an optical illusion naturally created in the wood when dark and light grains reflect light differently based on the angle of the viewer. It's seen most often in burl, or wavy-grained woods like maple, but it can happen in any wood that is grown under stress.

From beginning to end, it's so great to see a master carpenter in his own element.
