My rescue mixed breed loves mental stimulation. He's got some bit of Border Colie in him surely. Best way to make him happy tired is to have pack migration to my parents, then do some obedience (he absolutely loves everything that involes waiting, when I put him in sit/down and stay and walk away, you can see energy in him while he waits for break command so he can sprint towards award). And at the end he can do what he enjoys the most, which is just sprinting in circles around my parents elderly Rottweiler (She is a sweatheart, 11 years old, and my puppy respects her immensly). This kind of evening makes him incredibly happy and amazingly tired.

He is actually brilliant and friendly and well trained. He’s just gotten to a point where he’s also brilliant about getting into all kinds of trouble. Thank you for showing us how to be firm and consistent leaders with him through this difficult phase so we can get our dream dog out of it on the other end.
You shouldn't work puppies too hard. I imagine by now he lasts much longer but still one should avoid really hard workouts and impact activities. Their joints are still forming and can be easy to injure.

We have a border collie. I take her to the ocean where she runs in the surf for an hour.....very quiet on the way home. We get into our yard and she heads right to her frisbee and will play catch till your arm falls off.😂

I have a cattle dog staffy x and it wasn’t until about 6 months ago she suddenly became interested in the ball. It’s so easy and she loves it. Her recall has improved, she is learning stay, so much better than before. I’m very inexperienced but this trick has been helping so much.
On the the of the hardest things to teach a Dog is to behave , chill , relax and not bark while you while your away from home. Grace my Lab X Staffie cross has had Sep Anx since the day I picked her up at 8 weeks. Honestly I must of watched every TH-cam tutorial out there ! Leaving her with a bone , A pigs ear ,it could be a pound of fillet steak left on the coffee table as soon as I left she would ignore her treats until i returned . I would depart and enter my home with no eyes contact and with no fuss , starting off with 1 minuet leading up to 15 . Any more then 15-20 minuets and Grace howled. I reached out to a Dog trainer and she told me throwing or launching a ball raises her Adrenalin and that Adrenalin stays in her system several hours hours after a walk . Leaving a Dog thats not calm before you leave isn't a good idea When ever I need to leave Grace I dont throw the ball on a walk prior . I also close the blinds and leave her in one room (as instructed by the trainer) She has just turned 3 her anxiety is still there but down by 30 to 50% . I also bought a motion censor camera with a Mic and speaker so I can watch and talk to her via my phone when im away ( when she is about to bark or howl) Will , please could you make a video on Separation anxiety as I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject.
Pack play gives Max the most joy! But we just have to limit it because of his hip dysplasia! Roll on replacement number 2! Even when it’s limited he’s happy and exhausted and if he’s happy I’m happy!
My dog is walked on an extension lead, I have no issues with him walking ahead or momentarily behind sniffing, I’ve got my eye on him, and know mentally I’m the leader and a quick command will bring him back on track if I change direction, regarding playing fetch I always get my dog to return the ball and do a random command, sit, down etc just to break his concentration then throw again
Question for you…what if you need to let the dogs burn off a bit of the super crazy energy before you can loose leash walk? I have one dog I need to pre exhaust before we do leash work, and I’d like to find a way to make him calmer at the start.
After doing your Perfect Puppy course my daughter's dog went from 'perfect puppy' and became the crazy adolescent dog - but this crazy teenage behaviour is being cured by your tricks on tiring the dog mentally and always behaving the same way with him (consistency) - so now he is so much calmer and even does one walk every day totally on the lead!
You will hit that sweet spot, all of this will pay off and in a couple of months he will wake up and be like "oh yeah, perfect dog, can do and will do" adolescence is hard but the consistency makes it so worth while!
@@benbrown2096 The Perfect Puppy course made a vast difference to my daughter's dog. Her dog is huge and as a puppy was fairly mentally disorganised. The course has built a bond between my daughter and the dog, so the dog now looks to her for guidance. The important thing is consistency - never relent and give training a little break - just keep on at it.
The ONLY thing I disagree with is the comments about what you can do while your dogs play. Being on the phone; doing business; etc….folks drop the phone. If you’re too busy to spend quality time with your pup…don’t get one. 👍🏼🇨🇦
If you have super high energy dogs that demand constant attention, it's ok to occasionally be on your phone or do business while throwing a ball. There's a limit to how much you can give them. But I will say, my dogs KNOW when I'm not giving them 100% attention.
I often have an audiobook playing while I play fetch, or walk with mine, but never through headphones/ear buds because then I can't hear any approaching vehicle, person, or animal (yes I know....🤔). We should be enjoying the actual time with our pets, but I don't think some music or quiet narration takes us away, it just makes the waiting for the ball to come back part go quicker! I also found I stay out to play much longer that way which is a huge point for quiet audio! But I'm in total agreement that watching or typing or even talking to someone are too distracting unless you're in a totally fenced in secure area, during daylight. Edit: And you're missing time with them, and it goes by far to fast. I know I'll never regret spending time with my dog.
People lost the art of being in the moment, which is actually the simple secret to having a zen moment. Completely involved with whatever your doing, mind and body. Very rewarding and calming.

HI Will, I love watching and trying all your dog training techniques. Currently working on walking on a loose lead and getting my strong border collie to accept that I am the leader and not to be fearful/anxious on lead walks. Your tips are working well so far. Just on the retrieving a ball, my dog loves to retrieve the ball but not bring it back. Instead he finds it more fun to come zooming past you ( we call it 'buzzing the tower') and waiting for you to chase him. Which, in all fairness, we have done this in the back yard at times. So probably our cues are confusing. Anyway, would love to hear your advice. Lisa

Any tips on training to actually bring back the toy? I've got a Staffy-Ridgeback mix that will bring it back once or twice, but then doesn't want to come back anymore. Instead he wants me to chase him, which is not the end of the world but I'd like him to properly learn it. I've tried 'leaving him wanting more' but then he stops even bringing it back those first time(s).
I have recently got a boxer puppy we got our daughter for her birthday. He was 9 weeks old when we got him and having had a mature boxer before we thought we were well ready for another perfect pet in our lives,however he is far from perfect!!!in fact he’s a daily nightmare!!! I feel like we’ve got off on the wrong foot down to my natural reaction to his unbelievable bad behaviour and although I’m now having watched most of your videos adopting a completely different approach he’s not responding and I’m afraid he’s never going to respect us and change which is going to result in us having to get rid of him which will devastate my daughter but he’s now 5 months and getting a big strong dog and she’s terrified of him unless I have hold of him on a tight leash. Any advice on how to get him to behave please 🙏
Ditto on the fetch, I had a golden that could not say no to a good game of fetch, she would run so hard even when she was dead tired, I knew when she was tired because she would not give the ball back. I would have to take it away from her and I would do at least 2 more throws just for good measure then we would go to the pool for a relaxing swim and a cooling off.
Thanks for these videos. I'm a British expat in Japan and we just got a lovely Shiba join our family. He's been incredibly responsive after following your videos and advice despite thier reputation for being stubborn. The only issue I have right now is he nips at my youngest daughter a lot. I've tried very hard to get her to be calm and consistant but as shes only seven she doesn't quite have the patience down. I've also told her to stay standing and not go down to his level. Right now he's only a little pup so it's not an issue but nervous it will grow into a problem. I always remind the kids we should disengage when he acts that way and try to calm him down but wondering if there is more I should do?
im kinda having the same problem with my rott/lab (working line rott) pup, she is 10 months old and she loves to nip my mom, doesnt listen to her at all and loves to jump on her (btw dog is 25 kg mom is elderly and just about 60kg), so you can immagine, dog needs just a bit of power and she can topple mom down some stairs, if im near to stop dog its fine but if they are alone dog doesnt stop when prompted

My dog used to love to run with me. She seemed to automatically switch into we're a pack mode. I clipped her lead to my belt but she always naturally paced herself in step with me.
I have a rescue GSD x Lurcher, she'll play ball all day in the garden or the dog park but won't play out on a walk? she's brilliantly well behaved now and stays beside me and ignores other dogs and people, I just feel just a "walk" isn't the best exercise for her?
Love your videos and your philosophies, in particular "guidance and direction", " loving leadership" and "pack migration". One comment to the game if fetch in the video: I think it is not a good general advice to "just throw balls for your dog" without any "rules". To really tire out your dog and prevent him from getting crazy about movin things like thrown balls, having to wait until allowed to "break" is essential - at least for dogs with high drive. Finally, Riley is absolutely amazing - very very lovely and great lab! 😃
So funny I have a roll model dog . Remi. Ex pig hunting dog. Record by himself held 142kg of very angry bore. Well socialised. Down at tne Sunny Coast visiting a relly. Did the towny thing and eent to the dog park. Well, Remi had the best time of his life. 9 yrs old and very fit. Every time a new dog arrived be it 5kgs or 50 he'd greet it and PLAY. Tired dog was an understatement. He didn't move from when I got home until the next morning and that was only to move from the lounge room floor to where Cousin Graham had his breakfast coffee and biscuits that was very genorously shared. That arvo Coming to the park? I reckon he managed to lift one eyebrow and that was it. Next day he was good but he tempered his enthusiasm and still had a great time. I'm a part time animal behaviorist. Horses. Dogs and children and they all work o tne same program. Thanks Will for giving me the confidence to go back out there to help our community both animal and human.
I have 2 American bullies one 12 Months male and the other 9 months female. They’re always trying to get ahead of the other for the leading positions and constant pulling when I walk Them both of them . When I walk just one dog they’re fine, focused and not pulling at all. I just want to be able to walk both dogs without hassle.
Love your videos, I have recently rescued a Malinois and she loves fetch but i sturggle to get her to drop the ball she is approx 9 mnths old she sits on command however due to being young she gets distracted very easily any tips and tricks to get her to drop the ball
Although I do really like your content feel like this specific video ultimately was a big let down for me. Both methods require very specific things, a dog thats motivated to actually play fetch and also a group of friendly dogs with a big enclosed space. Some content around beagles/hounds would be appreciated. Keep up the good work 👌, bit envious as this advice is spot on, just doesn't apply to me 🥲.

I know that fetch is supposed to be a simple thing to teach, but my dog will chase the stick or ball, and just refuse to bring it back to me. She wants me to run after her to get it!! She's absolutely not interested in treats, so how can I train her to bring the ball back?
I've been told Border Collies will run for a ball all day, every day. Repeated exercise is how they train race horses. Running after the tractor, running after the sheep, it's their forte. Our game of fetch includes some sniffing out. My garden has several fences and walls. I throw a ball on a rope over one wall, she has to run around to that area and find it. There may be long grass, it might be under an evergreen bush or hung on a branch. Its very windy around here so sometimes my throw isn't good and I can't see it hung up in a hedge. She can smell it and I can bend or prune so one of us can find it. She loves the working together! The ball on a rope type means you can use different muscles as you throw over arm, under arm, over your head, backhand, between your legs. She has to guess, read my body language, to predict where it's going. I don't get RSI in my nearly 70 year old shoulder. Thanks for the video.

Can you please tell me how you get your girls to play together? I have 2 girls and they both get to excited then a bit snippy.. I have an older American staffy (9) and a young English staffy (17 months) and my older girl is grumpy sometimes and my baby it's so excitable. I would hate for them to get into a proper fight. I can't walk them both because they pull and criss cross. I'd love to be able to walk them both together. I feel horrible because they don't get out nearly enough.
Will, can you please do a video on playing tug of war with your dog? Good idea? Bad idea? If good, how can it be done without teaching your dog to fight for his toys with you?
during tug of war you can teach your dog "let go" command easily. and saw people teach "leave it" as well using the toy alone without treats. because toy had very high value to the dog as well. tug of war is great energy outlet and makes you included in the game with your dog. its not fighting for his toys. he is playing. teaching let go and leave it command will make your dog understand that certain things are off limits unless you allow it. teaching those commands during play with toys will make your dog understand leave it when he wants to get that squirrel across the street

Hey i have a question. Are Amstaff's just as good with kids as Staffies? For some reason AKC rates them 3/5, but Staffies 5/5. The AKC is pretty accurate, at least with the Doberman, Bullmastiff, Rhodesian ridgeback ect... All of which ive researched and came to the same conclusions as their ratings. But not sure how accurate the AKC is with the Amstaff.
I tire my chihuahua with teaching tricks and taking him to play with other toy breed dogs off leash ^^ love his happy face when he run to play tag with them
I had a Sheltie years ago, that LOVED to play fetch. She was a very high energy level dog and an hour walk wouldn't tire her enough. Here's an example: My brother used to hike the White mountains here in NH; he took our German Shepherd mix and our Sheltie hiking up Mount Washington, 6,288 feet, an 8 hour hike. The German Shepherd mix was out for the count. Not my Sheltie... I played fetch with her for 2 hours after that hike!!! She had incredible endurance!!!
My lab mix will, most of the time, chase the ball, but you won't be getting it back without trading for something...any ideas on how to train fetch with a dog who would rather just chew everything he can and can get very possessive over balls? Hoping by learning fetch he'll learn tennis/similar balls are for fun play with humans and not edible chew toys to guard with his life.
I’ve got the same and having a second identical ball was a good trade, the live ball in hand is more interesting, maybe worth a try. Having done this for a bit, my dog sometimes gives the ball up without asking now and drops more often on command
I have a Vizsla puppy. If 10 minutes of fetch wore out my dog I'd be thrilled. I stand on my hill and launch it about 600feet. It will do fetch for hours.
Is playing fetch (with a ball or freesbee or whatever) good for all breeds? I'm asking because my border collie gets easily fixated and has a very high level of emotions. The behaviourist I'm working with claims that border collies shouldn't really play fetch as it might lead to even more behavioral problems and actually get them even more excited and fixated instead of wearing them down.
You can teach them "game over". I usually do something to calm them down (decompress) , like throw some treats in the grass. Then after you give the command to "settle " or "place".
@@robynneels9425 thanks, thats good advice I usually forget about 😅 I also heard from my trainer that border collie’s usually become a bit calmer at 2-2,5 years of age. So still some crazy times ahead of me.
@Will Atherton Canine Training some dog trainers say dont Play fetch with your dog as it conditions them to chase after moving things. Is that even true or not. If so, should i only do it somes or should the dog learn to only chase things that i throw and nothing Else?
So my dog is fine with other dogs until the other dog starts running near her, then she snaps and snarls at them and turns and runs back to me 😅 it makes it really hard to exercise her if I take her to a dog park or something. Any tips?

If she doesn't like the ball, then probably best just to find a different game that she does enjoy. My Dane couldn't care less about me throwing something but will chase a flirt pole lure for ages (relatively, she's Eileen on energy). As Will always says you just have to be bespoke to the dog and figure out what they are driven by. If she doesn't go for fetch, NBD, just find a game she enjoys! Hope this helps!

Take a step back and do it in a lower distraction environment, like your living room. It's more important that your dog understand the lesson than you go out adventuring into the world. Baby steps are everything! ❤️
It’s close to the forth of July here and there are a lot of fireworks 🎇. I have two labs and one gets really scared 😳 and starts shaking. The other one is fine they are brothers. Is there anything I can do to help him from being so scared 😱
My vet prescribed Trazadone for my Dane. There’s relax treats on Amazon. Leave TV on & try being w/ them & reassure. If they’re extra tired that helps 2. Hope that helps. My Great Dane has dangerous anxiety w/ thunder & fireworks
"She'd probably laugh at me and tell me where to go." 🤣 My great dane is the same as your mastiff;however, he loves Tug of War. So, I throw his rope and he rushes to get it and come back to me for some Tug of War. This also helps with teaching him "Drop It," and just making sure he knows I'm in charge of this game.
Will is the only person on the planet who can simultaneously walk 4 large dogs and yet have a free hand to carry a walking stick!

I have a cattle dog staffy x and it wasn’t until about 6 months ago she suddenly became interested in the ball. It’s so easy and she loves it. Her recall has improved, she is learning stay, so much better than before. I’m very inexperienced but this trick has been helping so much.

On the the of the hardest things to teach a Dog is to behave , chill , relax and not bark while you while your away from home.
Grace my Lab X Staffie cross has had Sep Anx since the day I picked her up at 8 weeks.
Honestly I must of watched every TH-cam tutorial out there !
Leaving her with a bone , A pigs ear ,it could be a pound of fillet steak left on the coffee table as soon as I left she would ignore her treats until i returned .
I would depart and enter my home with no eyes contact and with no fuss , starting off with 1 minuet leading up to 15 .
Any more then 15-20 minuets and Grace howled.
I reached out to a Dog trainer and she told me throwing or launching a ball raises her Adrenalin and that Adrenalin stays in her system several hours hours after a walk .
Leaving a Dog thats not calm before you leave isn't a good idea
When ever I need to leave Grace I dont throw the ball on a walk prior . I also close the blinds and leave her in one room (as instructed by the trainer)
She has just turned 3 her anxiety is still there but down by 30 to 50% .
I also bought a motion censor camera with a Mic and speaker so I can watch and talk to her via my phone when im away ( when she is about to bark or howl)

My toy poodle loves fetch so much, especially a Frisbee, its the best way to tire her out especially combined with tricks/obedience too.
Pack play gives Max the most joy! But we just have to limit it because of his hip dysplasia! Roll on replacement number 2! Even when it’s limited he’s happy and exhausted and if he’s happy I’m happy!

My dog is walked on an extension lead, I have no issues with him walking ahead or momentarily behind sniffing, I’ve got my eye on him, and know mentally I’m the leader and a quick command will bring him back on track if I change direction, regarding playing fetch I always get my dog to return the ball and do a random command, sit, down etc just to break his concentration then throw again
Finding somewhere to run them off lead is a problem for me.
Question for you…what if you need to let the dogs burn off a bit of the super crazy energy before you can loose leash walk? I have one dog I need to pre exhaust before we do leash work, and I’d like to find a way to make him calmer at the start.
After doing your Perfect Puppy course my daughter's dog went from 'perfect puppy' and became the crazy adolescent dog - but this crazy teenage behaviour is being cured by your tricks on tiring the dog mentally and always behaving the same way with him (consistency) - so now he is so much calmer and even does one walk every day totally on the lead!
You will hit that sweet spot, all of this will pay off and in a couple of months he will wake up and be like "oh yeah, perfect dog, can do and will do" adolescence is hard but the consistency makes it so worth while!
Would you suggest the course? I am new to dog training and on the edge of getting it or not.
@@benbrown2096 The Perfect Puppy course made a vast difference to my daughter's dog. Her dog is huge and as a puppy was fairly mentally disorganised. The course has built a bond between my daughter and the dog, so the dog now looks to her for guidance. The important thing is consistency - never relent and give training a little break - just keep on at it.
The ONLY thing I disagree with is the comments about what you can do while your dogs play. Being on the phone; doing business; etc….folks drop the phone. If you’re too busy to spend quality time with your pup…don’t get one. 👍🏼🇨🇦

If you have super high energy dogs that demand constant attention, it's ok to occasionally be on your phone or do business while throwing a ball. There's a limit to how much you can give them. But I will say, my dogs KNOW when I'm not giving them 100% attention.
I often have an audiobook playing while I play fetch, or walk with mine, but never through headphones/ear buds because then I can't hear any approaching vehicle, person, or animal (yes I know....🤔). We should be enjoying the actual time with our pets, but I don't think some music or quiet narration takes us away, it just makes the waiting for the ball to come back part go quicker! I also found I stay out to play much longer that way which is a huge point for quiet audio! But I'm in total agreement that watching or typing or even talking to someone are too distracting unless you're in a totally fenced in secure area, during daylight.
Edit: And you're missing time with them, and it goes by far to fast. I know I'll never regret spending time with my dog.
People lost the art of being in the moment, which is actually the simple secret to having a zen moment. Completely involved with whatever your doing, mind and body. Very rewarding and calming.

I do fetch up and down the stairs with my Boston Terrier, it helps him build muscle and tire him out!
HI Will, I love watching and trying all your dog training techniques. Currently working on walking on a loose lead and getting my strong border collie to accept that I am the leader and not to be fearful/anxious on lead walks. Your tips are working well so far.
Just on the retrieving a ball, my dog loves to retrieve the ball but not bring it back. Instead he finds it more fun to come zooming past you ( we call it 'buzzing the tower') and waiting for you to chase him. Which, in all fairness, we have done this in the back yard at times. So probably our cues are confusing. Anyway, would love to hear your advice.

How much exercise would be excessive for pups...?
Any tips on training to actually bring back the toy? I've got a Staffy-Ridgeback mix that will bring it back once or twice, but then doesn't want to come back anymore. Instead he wants me to chase him, which is not the end of the world but I'd like him to properly learn it. I've tried 'leaving him wanting more' but then he stops even bringing it back those first time(s).
I have recently got a boxer puppy we got our daughter for her birthday. He was 9 weeks old when we got him and having had a mature boxer before we thought we were well ready for another perfect pet in our lives,however he is far from perfect!!!in fact he’s a daily nightmare!!! I feel like we’ve got off on the wrong foot down to my natural reaction to his unbelievable bad behaviour and although I’m now having watched most of your videos adopting a completely different approach he’s not responding and I’m afraid he’s never going to respect us and change which is going to result in us having to get rid of him which will devastate my daughter but he’s now 5 months and getting a big strong dog and she’s terrified of him unless I have hold of him on a tight leash. Any advice on how to get him to behave please 🙏
Ditto on the fetch, I had a golden that could not say no to a good game of fetch, she would run so hard even when she was dead tired, I knew when she was tired because she would not give the ball back. I would have to take it away from her and I would do at least 2 more throws just for good measure then we would go to the pool for a relaxing swim and a cooling off.

Thanks for these videos. I'm a British expat in Japan and we just got a lovely Shiba join our family. He's been incredibly responsive after following your videos and advice despite thier reputation for being stubborn. The only issue I have right now is he nips at my youngest daughter a lot. I've tried very hard to get her to be calm and consistant but as shes only seven she doesn't quite have the patience down. I've also told her to stay standing and not go down to his level. Right now he's only a little pup so it's not an issue but nervous it will grow into a problem. I always remind the kids we should disengage when he acts that way and try to calm him down but wondering if there is more I should do?
im kinda having the same problem with my rott/lab (working line rott) pup, she is 10 months old and she loves to nip my mom, doesnt listen to her at all and loves to jump on her (btw dog is 25 kg mom is elderly and just about 60kg), so you can immagine, dog needs just a bit of power and she can topple mom down some stairs, if im near to stop dog its fine but if they are alone dog doesnt stop when prompted

Leash the pup in the house, let her drag it around and correct the jumping and nipping right away. Replace child’s arm, hand, foot…with a chew toy.
My dog used to love to run with me. She seemed to automatically switch into we're a pack mode. I clipped her lead to my belt but she always naturally paced herself in step with me.
I have a rescue GSD x Lurcher, she'll play ball all day in the garden or the dog park but won't play out on a walk? she's brilliantly well behaved now and stays beside me and ignores other dogs and people, I just feel just a "walk" isn't the best exercise for her?

One comment to the game if fetch in the video: I think it is not a good general advice to "just throw balls for your dog" without any "rules". To really tire out your dog and prevent him from getting crazy about movin things like thrown balls, having to wait until allowed to "break" is essential - at least for dogs with high drive.

Hello, we did this with out German Shepard and lab pit bull mix and it led to a fight as my German Shepard didn't want to share the ball
So funny I have a roll model dog . Remi. Ex pig hunting dog. Record by himself held 142kg of very angry bore. Well socialised. Down at tne Sunny Coast visiting a relly. Did the towny thing and eent to the dog park. Well, Remi had the best time of his life. 9 yrs old and very fit. Every time a new dog arrived be it 5kgs or 50 he'd greet it and PLAY.
Tired dog was an understatement. He didn't move from when I got home until the next morning and that was only to move from the lounge room floor to where Cousin Graham had his breakfast coffee and biscuits that was very genorously shared. That arvo Coming to the park? I reckon he managed to lift one eyebrow and that was it.
Next day he was good but he tempered his enthusiasm and still had a great time.
I'm a part time animal behaviorist. Horses. Dogs and children and they all work o tne same program.

I have 2 American bullies one 12
Months male and the other 9 months female. They’re always trying to get ahead of the other for the leading positions and constant pulling when I walk Them both of them . When I walk just one dog they’re fine, focused and not pulling at all. I just want to be able to walk both dogs without hassle.
Love your videos, I have recently rescued a Malinois and she loves fetch but i sturggle to get her to drop the ball she is approx 9 mnths old she sits on command however due to being young she gets distracted very easily any tips and tricks to get her to drop the ball
Although I do really like your content feel like this specific video ultimately was a big let down for me. Both methods require very specific things, a dog thats motivated to actually play fetch and also a group of friendly dogs with a big enclosed space.
Some content around beagles/hounds would be appreciated.

I know that fetch is supposed to be a simple thing to teach, but my dog will chase the stick or ball, and just refuse to bring it back to me. She wants me to run after her to get it!! She's absolutely not interested in treats, so how can I train her to bring the ball back?
I've been told Border Collies will run for a ball all day, every day. Repeated exercise is how they train race horses. Running after the tractor, running after the sheep, it's their forte. Our game of fetch includes some sniffing out. My garden has several fences and walls. I throw a ball on a rope over one wall, she has to run around to that area and find it. There may be long grass, it might be under an evergreen bush or hung on a branch. Its very windy around here so sometimes my throw isn't good and I can't see it hung up in a hedge. She can smell it and I can bend or prune so one of us can find it. She loves the working together!
The ball on a rope type means you can use different muscles as you throw over arm, under arm, over your head, backhand, between your legs. She has to guess, read my body language, to predict where it's going. I don't get RSI in my nearly 70 year old shoulder.

Beagles are hounds. Give them scent games to use their nose.
Can you please tell me how you get your girls to play together? I have 2 girls and they both get to excited then a bit snippy.. I have an older American staffy (9) and a young English staffy (17 months) and my older girl is grumpy sometimes and my baby it's so excitable. I would hate for them to get into a proper fight. I can't walk them both because they pull and criss cross. I'd love to be able to walk them both together. I feel horrible because they don't get out nearly enough.
I have an 8 month fox Red Labrador. Lead walking is improving but he leads walks about 1/2 a dog length in front.

Will, can you please do a video on playing tug of war with your dog? Good idea? Bad idea? If good, how can it be done without teaching your dog to fight for his toys with you?
during tug of war you can teach your dog "let go" command easily.
and saw people teach "leave it" as well using the toy alone without treats.
because toy had very high value to the dog as well.
tug of war is great energy outlet and makes you included in the game with your dog.
its not fighting for his toys. he is playing.
teaching let go and leave it command will make your dog understand that certain things are off limits unless you allow it.
teaching those commands during play with toys will make your dog understand leave it when he wants to get that squirrel across the street
What's the best way to tire a French Bulldog?
My dog (7months lab) loves to go fetch but he doesn't want to learn how to let go, i have to open his jaw everytime... 😅 Not convenient at all ! Can you help with that ?

Hey i have a question. Are Amstaff's just as good with kids as Staffies? For some reason AKC rates them 3/5, but Staffies 5/5.
The AKC is pretty accurate, at least with the Doberman, Bullmastiff, Rhodesian ridgeback ect... All of which ive researched and came to the same conclusions as their ratings. But not sure how accurate the AKC is with the Amstaff.
I tire my chihuahua with teaching tricks and taking him to play with other toy breed dogs off leash ^^ love his happy face when he run to play tag with them

I had a Sheltie years ago, that LOVED to play fetch. She was a very high energy level dog and an hour walk wouldn't tire her enough. Here's an example: My brother used to hike the White mountains here in NH; he took our German Shepherd mix and our Sheltie hiking up Mount Washington, 6,288 feet, an 8 hour hike. The German Shepherd mix was out for the count. Not my Sheltie... I played fetch with her for 2 hours after that hike!!! She had incredible endurance!!!
My lab mix will, most of the time, chase the ball, but you won't be getting it back without trading for something...any ideas on how to train fetch with a dog who would rather just chew everything he can and can get very possessive over balls? Hoping by learning fetch he'll learn tennis/similar balls are for fun play with humans and not edible chew toys to guard with his life.
I’ve got the same and having a second identical ball was a good trade, the live ball in hand is more interesting, maybe worth a try. Having done this for a bit, my dog sometimes gives the ball up without asking now and drops more often on command
I have a Vizsla puppy. If 10 minutes of fetch wore out my dog I'd be thrilled. I stand on my hill and launch it about 600feet. It will do fetch for hours.
Is playing fetch (with a ball or freesbee or whatever) good for all breeds?
I'm asking because my border collie gets easily fixated and has a very high level of emotions. The behaviourist I'm working with claims that border collies shouldn't really play fetch as it might lead to even more behavioral problems and actually get them even more excited and fixated instead of wearing them down.
You can teach them "game over".
I usually do something to calm them down (decompress) , like throw some treats in the grass. Then after you give the command to "settle " or "place".

@Will Atherton Canine Training some dog trainers say dont Play fetch with your dog as it conditions them to chase after moving things. Is that even true or not. If so, should i only do it somes or should the dog learn to only chase things that i throw and nothing Else?

If she doesn't like the ball, then probably best just to find a different game that she does enjoy. My Dane couldn't care less about me throwing something but will chase a flirt pole lure for ages (relatively, she's Eileen on energy). As Will always says you just have to be bespoke to the dog and figure out what they are driven by. If she doesn't go for fetch, NBD, just find a game she enjoys! Hope this helps!

Take a step back and do it in a lower distraction environment, like your living room. It's more important that your dog understand the lesson than you go out adventuring into the world. Baby steps are everything! ❤️

It’s close to the forth of July here and there are a lot of fireworks 🎇. I have two labs and one gets really scared 😳 and starts shaking. The other one is fine they are brothers. Is there anything I can do to help him from being so scared 😱
My vet prescribed Trazadone for my Dane. There’s relax treats on Amazon. Leave TV on & try being w/ them & reassure. If they’re extra tired that helps 2. Hope that helps. My Great Dane has dangerous anxiety w/ thunder & fireworks

My great dane is the same as your mastiff;however, he loves Tug of War. So, I throw his rope and he rushes to get it and come back to me for some Tug of War. This also helps with teaching him "Drop It," and just making sure he knows I'm in charge of this game.
