Lovely video! 05:03 - very important message. Non-stop, forever. Once you set rules, you have to carry them thru the dogs life. All-tho you can brake the rules if necessary and the rules are clear to the dog ;)
My 2yr old lab X walked great with me then i got diagnosed with breast cancer and while going through treatment my brother was walking him he now pulls on the lead non stop. I'm still having treatment but not as harsh as before so am getting back to walking him myself and will def be trying your method. Thanks Will.

I am training my dog/puppy to be a service dog and he's amazing at most things but he's "reactive" to other dogs--like this dog he wants to say hi and greet every dog he sees; often whining (at best) and frequently pulling and/or lunging. Can't wait to get out into the yard and start working on this.
Great video, my spaniel has exactly this problem, such a good dog apart from lead walking, he will heal next to me off lead but as soon as I clip it on he’s like a rocket! Training starts tomorrow!

great video! Assuming you suffered an achilles rupture since you're using a vacoped boot? 7 months post surgery for me ... there is a light at the end of the tunnel! (there is also a light that never goes out-Morrissey/Marr 😉)

I appreciate this info, but in my dog's training, she doesn't seem to be very food motivated so I have a mid-afternoon class and feed her a smaller breakfast. Is there any other recommendation of how to motivate when she doesn't seem to care? We have tried at least 20 (and will continue to try more) very smelly, high value treats.

I bought a head collar off Amazon and it works right away! I fell 3 times from my dog pulling. I saw the dogs wearing a head collar at the Dog Whisperer with Cesar Milan show. So I got it and no more pulling.

Wow!...perfect timing and so well explained. 3 weeks ago, I adopted a 9-mo old rescue Rat Terrier mix and he does better when we are alone ...until he sees a bird or dog, etc., then he's very leash reactive. I look forward to trying this method as explained ...and Ben did a fantastic job as the handler. Thank you both!

We just got an 8 month cockerpoo that is certainly cocker spaniel then poodle and this has helped so much only on day 2 but it’s working

Ecollar, prong, slip leash, flat collar, off leash commands. They are all the same principle. They are a tool to explain to your dog what not to do. Never ignore a tool on principle. Ecollar, for example, allows your dog to roam freely while learning to be safe. How else can you teach a dog from a distance?
Well maybe accept that as a responsible dog owner that a dog being allowed to be off lead at a distance will depend on your dogs personality, if making a dog compliant can only be acheived by the use of a prong collar or ecollar then maybe just keep them on a lead rather than make them uncomfortable? @joefish6546
@joefish6546 IMHO, pain as a method of changing an animals behaviour is just wrong, only in an emergency would it be acceptable to hurt an animal, and I know that when "used correctly" these tools are not that bad but sadly many people misuse them or are not educated enough, because their capability to cause pain is always there IMHO they should be banned.

The other that was done is they stopped using the shoulder harness. These can result in more pulling.
Are you able to link the slip lead that you use? I struggle to find quality and well-working ones in pet stores here.
What to do with a dog who won't respond to treats for rewarding 😢 she is just mega focused on one certain thing, she won't pay attention to anything else.
Start training her at home, where there are less distractions, before moving on to training her outside. Also, my dog reacts to petting much more than treats, but I have had success training him before his meals, when he is hungry, using his regular food as treats. It worked really well.

I use my dogs toys for training because she is so prey driven food wasn't a good motivation.
Or physical praise. Some dogs react well to lovin and petting if not food or toys

Any recommendations on what a good slip lead should have? I'm seeing such a wide variety. Some freely slip, others you set max size with either a spring loaded adjuster or what looks like a nylon strip. I've also seen some where you adjust a min and max loop size. I've already been doing things wrong on walks by giving into a harness due to her pulling, I don't want to compound the problem by buying a bad slip lead.

Got any tips on how to walk a 7 month border collie next to the road without chasing or jumping at cars it only happened since she got hit by a builder's van when she was 4 months she's good off the lead in fields away from the roads and comes back when I use the whistle
Now, if the owner doesn't want me to use a slip lead with their dog, as long as I can get that dog's attention (with say a whistle, or a clicker sound, etc.,) can this still work? Working with a very smart German Shepherd with basic training in 'sit, stay, lay,' commands but pulls the leash at 80 lbs and I'm only 4'11".

Hi Will, love all your videos, but how do you transition from indoors to going on a walk? I have a 1 year old toy poodle and He behaves perfectly when training at home but as soon as we go outside for his walk it's like he forgets everything he has learnt? I have mobility problems and use a crutch, and he has nearly pulled me over a few times, I don't want to be scared to walk him but I don't know where to go next. PS I had a trainer when he was a puppy and again he did perfectly when she had him but as soon as he is passed back to me he forgets everything, thanks for reading.
So I’m not a pro dog trainer but I have worked with my dog and another dog who was a very distracted Aussie collie mix.
Any environmental changes you give your dog leads to them not being as focused on you. The worst mistake I made when training my personal dog was trying to take her out for a fully outdoors walk around the block right after I finish training her indoors. When you bring your dog outside, I would suggest training it up and down your sidewalk. If you have one or in very close proximity to your house, you’re gonna have to be willing to pretty much retrain your dog every time you take it outside until it begins to understand the concepts, both outside and inside, a lot of people would disagree with me on this point, but I actually trained my dog at night time when I made sure there were no cars or any other distractions because not many people are active at night time meaning that it will be any more low distraction environment to train the dog in.
The fact that it walked perfectly outside with the trainer, and did not walk very well outside with you can mean a bit. A lot of times, training the dog is about 10% of the total equation. Teaching the owner how to maintain the training is the other 90. I would suggest perhaps reevaluating your training methods, going over this trainer’s videos, especially on communication with a slip lead, and seeing where you might not be pressuring at the perfect moment, rewarding at the right time, etc. Adjust when necessary and be consistent in about 5 minute sessions. If the dog is super distracted on a walk, but knows a few other tricks, such as down stays and recalls, I would actually suggest working on the down stays and recalls to where the dog has an understanding that those tricks can be done outside and inside before working on your walking in general, specifically the downstairs and recalls tended to help me when transitioning my dog from inside walking to outside walking with distractions because it built the relationship outside as well as inside with your dog and allows it to focus on you more than other distractions.

If you don’t have one, I would also personally suggest investing in a dog training clicker and treat bag because it can kind of help nail right when your dog is doing exactly when you want what you want it to if you need it that second. It really helps with timing. Training the clickers really easy. Just give your dog a whole bunch of treats and click at the same time you give them the traits for a while, and then build duration to where you click and then a few seconds later you give them a treat. It was a complete game changer when I started doing this with my dog and she is now now walking almost perfectly every time.
My dog won’t stay I can go out with her and I try to stand still but she slowly pulls me further and further. She’s only a small dog but over time it’s starting to hurt my arm. How can I teach her to sit and stay calm on a walk before I start lead training.
What slip leads do you recommend, I tried one and doesn’t stay in the right position, again same as this dog, lovely but just over playful, and pulls ahead, then the slip come down from behind the ears to the lower neck. I have done training and do engagement training and he’s even done the kc bronze and passed.
What breed of dog do you have?

I need advice on slip leads as well. Mine is a 38kg standard poodle. Nothing I try seems to keep from lunging ahead and I’m one walk from a fall at this point.
Slip leads never stay high up the neck enough to be effective without constant adjustment. Get a Halti or Gentle Leader. Far more effective in a shorter space of time.
So I have 1y.o. golden retriever x Labrador mix. I live in a flat 9th floor. my problem is to get out to her potty. She gets extremely excited when it's time to go and pulls absolutely horribly on the way to the lift to the stairs front door...And when I give her all the length of the leash to play when we get to get spot outside she uses all over it and more ALWAYS which makes pulling even worse. I feel like I'm trapped especially with this slippery weather. What would you or any dog owners here recommend? Because I feel like she listens so well at home...

I've seen people use head halters, it turns the dog's head if they pull, so you don't even need to yank it. Check out Beckman's dog training, he's good.

I pet-sit a Great Dane who pulls especially when he sees little dogs (pun intended) and he has a horrible recall. I've been trying to work on it with him.
I let my dog pull on 1 of his leads because he wasent trained not to want an long lead and heyd have to over compensate too much not to hit end of lead
I had a dog for 17 years until he passed away last year . I miss him dearly but i dont want another dog ever. All this hair and food and vet bills , no holidays etc. I am finally free but I donate £10 for dog trust a month

I am a total convert to your videos and methods and have some good success with calming lead pulling with a 3yr old working cocker spaniel . But with other dogs it disappears instantly and not even chicken will distract him! He is intact and highly aroused by any other dog so he can't be let off. I wonder if he can ever get to this stage??
Why will the dog not listen to the owner's voice but the light ' tap taping' will be listened to, unless it is because it causes discomfort.
Incredible that the instructor mentioned the dog's tail as a sign of 'happy' since dogs will wag their tail in many different scenarios, including fear etc, therefore the whole body needs to be taken into account. I saw a frustrated dog , mixed feelings between happy to get any kind of attention and frustration of being allowed to 'sort of' go to the place they want but then not allowed to, and feeling that lead pull. It's a lead pull, not a 'tap tap taping' however the instructor wants to phrase it. You pull on the lead, the dog feels it on their neck, the dog feels compelled for any reason to make that tap go away.
If it wasn't aversive and it was just communication, the dog would be listening with a simple voice cue. If the dog needs anything 'stronger' than a voice cue, that's because the dog is over threshold. Is it not better to teach self control rather than pull on the lead with as much force as is needed to make the dog stop (aka 'yell your cue louder', even if that is a light tap for the human. the lightness ought to be measured by the dog's response, not what the instructor thinks is light).
There are so many different ways to teach self control, calmness and proximity to the owner, as well as attention to the owner, without any lead even, let alone needing to add even a light lead pressure in order to be able to communicate a refusal.
What happened to errorless learning? The dog is allowed to keep doing the undesired behavior and then being refused to follow through.
The 'trained dogs' all show lip licks btw. They dont look too calm or happy.
I really dont understand the strong headedness and close mindedness of trying to conceal aversive techniques with honeyed words, the average joe wouldn't be able to tell between a happy tail wag and a frustrated one. Why the continuing insistence on lead pulling, however light, and trying to make the dog listen when the dog is unable to, when much proven methods of no frustration for the dog are already being applied in real life. Better have a look at Control Unleashed.
If the lead pull works, it's because the dog wants it to go away. If the dog wants it to go away, it's because its aversive for the dog. Nobody else gets to decide what's aversive, but the dog. And that dog had mixed feelings of frustration and happy to get some treats. Mixed feelings is not what i want for my dog.
Theres also the question if what we need is heeling, or do we just need the dog to have a loose leash. But that's another subject...
I really really wish this trainer would look into alternative ways to train those behaviors, build on what he currently knows along with what other people know, rather than not being able to let go of this outdated kind of thinking.

My question is about leash length. I noticed that in the videos, while training the dogs, they are all on short leashes. None of them are being trained on a full leash length. My dog will behave on the short leash but when given the full length he wants to get to the end and my loose leash is gone. Also, if you keep him on a short leash how do they manage to find spots to pee and poop?
If they are truly engaged, they will never reach the end of the leash regardless of the length. Hence loose lead. They will be given the opportunity to potty etc.. ideally let them do that before your walk

I will never understand it.... people strap their pooches into a device that was designed to give a 4 legged animal the best power to weight pulling ratio..... and then wonder why the dog becomes so effective at pulling.... A dog in a harness pulls.... it overpowers the walker and gets what it wants, it gets its reward.... you are quite literally training your dog to pull if you try to train them using a harness.
I was silly enough to do this lol you are right, just makes it more comfortable for them to pull you. Some dogs are okay in them though if they are less energetic I guess. But my high drive dogs just take the mick lol

The slip lead is totally unnecessary here tho. This dog (and pretty much every dog) would do much better with capturing a loose leash, and there would be literally no need to inflict pain on him. A good dog trainer who follows LIMA protocol would never go straight to positive punishment before exhausting alllllllll the other options. To say it nicely, this is a really shitty dog trainer.
