Okay so from what I’ve gotten from the comments I have another question. Do you all think things like this are purposely skipped by and, if referenced at all, only referenced in passing or do you think it’s just a lack of time and too much content to cover? I have my own ideas of the way things are taught in the US in regards to historical missteps for the country, but I’m curious what you all think about the way it’s taught in your country. So, purposely skipped or just time constraints?

Since Joakim is czecho-swedish it's interesting that this song has a swedish and a czech prospective.

You got some things right. I'm Czech and living in Prague. Here we learn a lot about this war in schools as it started there. The reasons were, that Bohemians (Czechs) were traditionally protestants but under the rule of the Habsburg family, they were forced to catholicism. Czech nobility hated that as there were treaties allowing them to do their own religious stuff they fought hard for at the beginning of the 15th century (Hussite wars). So as a tradition (it started the Hussite rebellion before) they defenestrated a few guys from the windows. So the war started first as a conflict between Bohemians and Austrians but soon the whole of Europe joined. Bohemians lost at the battle of White mountain in 1620 which was the end of the rebellion and Czech nobility. One of the biggest exodus of people from Bohemia. Catholicism became a law. The nobility had to escape, their property was confiscated and many of those who stayed were executed. It's one of the biggest executions of nobility. 27 of them were killed. A dark time for Czech history as it started forced Germanisation and left the kingdom in despair and under the Austrian boot till the end of WW1. So Bohemians were defeated and forced to join back into the empire they were now fighting for their enemies as the war was raging on. This song is about the final battle of the war which also took place in Prague. Swedes wanted to loot and pillage even though the war officially ended. They took the west bank of the city and the castle. But the citizens fought back. Students, clerks, priests everyone able to protect the walls did so. Swedes were bombarding the city from the castle by the captured cannons but yet no surrender. They were surrounded as another Swedish army came south-east yet they managed to hold the city till the imperial army came and swedes decided to leave.

History lessons in school are usually focused on kings and usually you stop talking about the thirty year war as Gustavus Adolphus dies in the mist. It may be mentioned briefly but definitely not to the extent of the Stockholm Bloodbath, Battle of Lutzen or Carolus Rex possible assassination. Gustavus' successor as well, Queen Kristina, have a lot of other traits that overshadow this event and she wasn't personally involved with it. So yeah, mentioned in passing but no bigger weight attached to it. Oh, and yes the Sabaton history goes well into this, but Swedish generals just wanted the last bit of plunder before peace time and better terms for their sides since the peace talks were happening at the same time as the siege.

the booty was one of the richest ever. Among the precisous artefacts was the Devils bible and the Silverbible , the Czech goverment have asked several times to get it back , our goverment still refuses, the siege of Praque well not our finest moment. Königsmark had a treator inside the city and Queen Christina who was a intrested in culture ,arts , paintings etc was very precise that all these valiuable treusure should be brought back home to her. asap

Plundering their way through Europe was basically how every army was supported at the time and it was commonly accepted as they way wars were fought. There wasn’t logistic support to feed an entire army and their families. Wives and children followed the armies around so with 20k soldiers, the number of people needed to be fed was probably the double.

we talked about the nature of war back in history. what happened to cities when armies that primarily was paid in plunder... got to plunder... we didnt shy away from the atrocities that could befall the inhabitants. honestly, it was Djinghis Khan all over again. if we sack and plunder this city that opposed us, the next may surrender willingly and pay a tribute rather than become plundered. in the long run, destroying one city, meant you saved troops for the next three cities...

30 year war is talked about very very shortly as it’s not considered important enough and there is so much history the school has to cover in a short period of time. A bit of time is given to our great power era but only as a whole not any specific part in it at least for me personally.

Swedish ( and possibly at least German ) history classes about european history is basicly the opposite. Telling kids how evil and racist people was in the past, how drunk they were and how religiously indoctrinated they was and all the bad things the kings and queens did.

  • @faarsight

We do teach even the darker parts of our history, like our very limited stint with colonialism and slave trade, as well as the atrocities carried out by Sweden during the 30 years war. Including the sacking of Prague.

To the swedes: Just give us our books back, keep the pictures from daVinci, Rafael and shit ;-)
