The Battle of Fraustadt was a revenge for us Swedes or our Carolingian army. A few years earlier, the Russians did exactly the same thing by slaughtering Swedes. It should be remembered that the great Nordic war was not started by Sweden. Poland, Denmark, Russia declared a joint war against Sweden. For us Swedes, this was a defense war

Technically, you are correct. But I'd like to point out, looking from the other side of this conflict, that Sweden had annexed many lands during 1600s that prior belonged to the countries that declared this war. It was extremely naive of swedes to expect its neighbours not to do anything about it. So, who can be considered the aggresor depends entirely from which side of the conflict you are looking since each side felt they were justified in their actions. Just saying it's always good to consider a wider perspective.

@@vaivasoriute6699 yes is depends on how you see it, but Skåne and two other provinces was taken in a war that denmark started and when Sweden took Gotland plus some more provinces it was because denmark almost encircled Sweden and they even asked holy roman emperor, Poland and Russia to help with it and they charge Sweden for money when they did trades so there denmark was aggressive towards Sweden since they saw them as weak after 30 years war but they where not weak though and the 30 years war was not started by Sweden. But yes it depends on how you see it. But the Great northern war started because Denmark-norway, Poland-lithuania and Russia did not want Sweden as a power

Thanks for additional information about Denmark, I surely didn't know that. I was reffering more to the Polish Lithuanuan Commonwealth perspective, since I am more familiar with that.

This song transitions perfectly into poltava at the end.

Yes!! I was surprised when I put these two in queue in spotify and couldn't tell the exact moment when one ended and the other began even though I know both songs :D

Probably because poltava was the next battle at least i think

Livgardet/Royal Guard isn't technically from the album, but it might as well have been! Make sure to watch the official videos for both the swedish and english version, they are both pretty cinematic. Looking forward to following you on your trip through the battles and politics of the northern war! And yeah, Fraustadt is one of the best examples of why Caroleans had their reputation.

I suggest watching English first, then Swedish. That way the videos will make most sense, even if they were released in the opposite order.

The tempo fits though---a fast song for a fast battle. If I remember correctly, the main part of the battle only lasted about 30 minutes because the Swedes were outnumbered and had no cannons; so, they had to advance quickly to limit the usefulness of the Saxon artillery and numbers.

Somehow I get an almost Iron Maiden vibe from the guitars and the bass there.
And you are absolutely right, the Swedish version made a point of killing those that surrendered. The English version sounds a bit more heroic - though it does have the chorus where "they will never survive" so still quite the massacre.

At the battle of Fraustadt the Carolean army managed to do a double envelopment on a force twice its size. Like Haniball did at Canae.
Basicaly trapping all of the enemies.
But in the aftermath russian prissoners might have been executed.

The execution was either a revenge for an earlier battle, or another interesting theory is that Russians were wearing their coats inside-out, making it look like they were Saxons, since the Saxons were getting better treatment as PoWs.
And I think disguising yourself as another faction was punishable by death or something.

I had never heard the second theory, that’s interesting.

And a second commander pointed out that some of those executed were done so because the Swedes were not capable, in his opinion, of giving quarter as their left was still under assault at the time.
