    I edit the Doctor Who reactions for the Blind Wave TH-cam channel. I would recommend starting from the 2005 reboot and not the 1963 origins. That way it should take you about 3 or so years to catch up if you do 1 episode a week.

    Start with the modern series 1, 9th doctor (Eccelston) and work forward. Most people haven't seen the old episodes anyway due to the fact they aired from the 60-80's. Then you can go back and watch a couple great episodes from that era. This way the new series was a kind of reboot for the modern audience so it explains a lot of the mythology and the pretext towards The Doctor

      Appreciate the info! Got a lot'a folks recommending to start from the new series, so if we decide to jump in, that's probably how it'll go haha. Just gotta get over those purist vibes 😅

      @@ReelRejects watch a couple of stories from each Classic doctor (there are loads of 'best Classic stories to watch' lists on the Net). This will help keep your viewing reasonably pure,and will allow you to enjoy many of the classic references when they appear in the new series (and there are a LOT of them).
      Nonetheless,there are several Classic Who reactors who are watching as many of the stories as are available. One more will be good :)

    When I was growing up I saw the Dr from the 80s, but every Sunday on UK Gold (basically a repeat channel) there was a Dr.Who Omnibus which was 5 episodes back-to-back from the very old episodes. I found that enjoyable to watch, even if I have to admit they were cringey. There was a charm about the old episodes. T'was the 60s after all. So if you watched 5 episodes a day it'd take you 24 weeks to get through the entire back catalogue. That's about 6 months. In all honesty though starting with the 2005 series is good, because there was a break of like 16 years between Sylvester McCoy the 7th Doctor and Christoper Eccelstons 9th doctor. The movie released in 1996 was a failed attempt to move in to the film format so when the 2005 series started with Christopher Eccelston it acted like a new beginning. It explained alot of what had happened before. In fact the show uses the Companions as a great way of getting people up-to-date if you missed a series or are a first time watcher.

    • @ReelRejects
      @ReelRejects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Damn! That's a pretty lovely memory! I feel like I would've enjoyed those old Who episodes growing up. Appreciate the history as well! 😊 Gonna try and convince the G-Train to start at some point. We can both be kinda purist-y about the order of our shows, but in this case the overwhelming majority seems to suggest starting with the new series haha, so, I imagine that's probably what'll happen.

    • @Kasterborous1963
      @Kasterborous1963 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Small correction: The movie wasn't an attempt to move to a film format. It was just the pilot of an intended series on Fox as a co-production between the BBC, Fox, and Universal. Reception in the UK was divisive, but reception in the US was so negative that Fox and Universal backed out leading to the Paul McGann series not happening.

    They didn’t change the rules of regeneration per say, they just hade something happen so the doctor got to start another regeneration cycle. So even though it would be 13, 14, 15 regenerations and so on, it’s the start of a new cycle, 1, 2, 3, etc at the same time.
    At least that’s what I can gather from it.

    Greg if you are going to watch doctor who which I doubt you will just watch it from the 2005 soft reboot. Lots of people suggest watching any episodes called Blink as a tester episode. The newer series episodes are 42 minutes long but the older series episodes were 25 minutes and could of been part of 3,4,5 or 6 part stories.

    You keep saying that you’ve seen two seasons if you’re going by British seasons. What? That makes no sense. We have the same seasons, if you’ve only watched the 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccelson) then you’ve only watched one season. Cause he only did one season.
    Christmas episodes are mid point between two different seasons, most seasons have 13 episodes apart from Season 7 which is longer as they had the 50th anniversary. In 2009 there was only four episodes of Doctor who that year and they were branded as “special” episodes as they were scattered throughout the year like having an Easter special, Christmas special. The actor who plays the Doctor stays for the whole season. Eccelson (2005)did 1 season, Tennant(2006-2010) did 3 seasons plus 4 specials, Smith (2010-2013)did 3 seasons and so did Capaldi (2013-2017)

    Basically when the Doctor regenerates he/she gains a new body and personality while maintaining memory. As we know nurture is far more important than nature. He/she is essential the same person but acts and responds differently to situations. This is awesome because it's a huge deal for actors to take on this iconic role but gives the freedom to create their own interpretations. It's also a huge burden because fans give a lot of pressure to make sure you don't fuck up their favorite character...a character so many people have loved literally since childhood

    Start with the 2005 Revival with the 9th Doctor. I'd recommend including all the mini-webisodes as well that can usually be found on TH-cam as well as some of the 'Children in Need' Charity specials. The revived series covers the important stuff from the 'Classic era' that most people will have missed. You might not understand a few references here and there for hardcore fans who will have watched the entirety of the classic series but it's not a deal breaker. That will pretty much give you the definitive Doctor Who experience explaining and showing you everything you NEED to see in order to fully understand and get the most out of the show. There should be lists online on where to slot in the mini-episodes amongst the main ones. Hope this helps :)

    Start in 2005 and power through. Some of its campy but heartfelt and fun, some of its hilarious and witty, some of it's down right creepy, and some of it is the best writing in television. This is the show that basically has zero boundaries and can literally do anything.

    I've seen quite a bit of the old stuff growing up, and I enjoyed it, but it's the new series that really got me hooked. And David Tennant is my Doctor for sure! He's my favorite, but they all have something to offer and are fun to watch! Give it a chance. You might like it!

    Classic Who's stories were 4 episodes, the equivalent to a two parter now. The episodes were 25-30 minutes an episode. The newer episodes regular episodes are 42-45 minutes, some are a little over an hour, but two-parter's now are the equivalent to a whole story back then, but even singular episodes are good enough. 12-13 episodes a season in New Who, and a Christmas Special every year. The new season will consist of 10 episodes, each around 50 minutes I believe.

    Woah when you compile all his dark moments together, it makes Doctor Who look like a really dark show. There's a lot of humour in it I promise :)
    Also start with the 2005 reboot - season one. There are moments in Moffat era that may make you want to give up on the show, but you can make it through :)

    if you guys want to start watching Doctor Who the new episode that comes out 10/7 is the perfect jumping on point because its a new actor and a new show-runner and they have said that they will not reference previous continuity for a couple of seasons.

    Well the idea of restarting a regeneration cycle didn't start with the revamp. In the classic episodes the master was reaching the end of his cycle and bargained with the time lords for another 12 regeneration to help save the doctor.

    I don't know why your channel has never showed up in my suggestions! I'd love to see reactions to NuWho (2005 - ) starting with 9/Eccleston like others have suggested.
    Like many people, I've only watched NuWho. I think John's pitch for the show was real good.

      Sorry, that's how it was pitched to me initially. Maybe whoever told me that was used to the idea that British seasons are 6 or so episodes and assumed they'd been lumped into one for America or something like that... either way, I stand corrected!

    The new series who has 13 episode per season Eccleston did one season, Tennet did 3 season and a bunch special/ep, Smith did 3 and Capaldi did 3. Also there's always a Xmas special/ep after each season

    Ps. remember to watch the christmas specials!

    Two of my favorite things.. You two reacting to stuff and Doctor Who, my favorite TV show. I don't get why John says Eccleston did two seasons by British standards because it'd still just be one season. But never mind that. Don't start from the very beginning. Start with the new series (144 episodes I think) and then potentially go back to watch some of the highlights of the old ones. Each Doctor brings something unique to the role, while some of them are obviously influenced by previous portrayals. Definitely worth the watch
