There is yet another species of orangutan that was found in the secondary jungles near the town of Sitiawan in peninsula Malaysia. I saw it about 20 years ago, and was probably the last of its species, as it was in the company of two white gibbons. All the forests around Sitiawan have now been cleared and planted up with oil palm, and hence this species may now be extinct. I got a good view of this ape before it disappeared into the jungle with its friends. It had bright orange fur , more bulky and slightly taller than the gibbons and walked like an orangutan and not like a gibbon.
The children look even more human, because they don't have sagittal crests, ridges on the back of the skull where muscles anchor to to provide more bite force. As a drawback, sagittal crests restrict brain size, so humans evolved our skulls to permanently underdeveloped, so that we can have a larger brain size at the expense of our bite force. Essentially, humans are big baby monkeys.

Yup that’s how it goes. Even scientists with the most benevolent of intentions need funding to further their research. This is their way of marketing their “progress”. Investors don’t pay money to have discoveries be kept secret. Ofc now that these apes have been discovered, new conservation efforts will be underway, as well as new bounties posted on the black market, and a mini industry will form around them. People are going to find a way to profit off of this one way or another.
There are probably several ways. Actually count a small number of orangutans, observe them for a while, so you know how much territory they use, generalize this number of urangutans to number of square kilometers ratio to the whole area where they are thought to live to get an estimate. Or estimate the productivity of the area in biomass available to the orangutans for eating, so to get an estimate. If you really want to know, read the papers.

"There are 3 species of orangutan. The Bornean, the Sumatran and the recently confirmed new species (as of 2017), the Tapanuli. These great apes are only found in the wild on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra." "Orangutans are great apes native to the rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia. They are now found only in parts of Borneo and Sumatra, but during the Pleistocene they ranged throughout Southeast Asia and South China. Classified in the genus Pongo, orangutans were originally considered to be one species. From 1996, they were divided into two species: the Bornean orangutan (P. pygmaeus, with three subspecies) and the Sumatran orangutan (P. abelii). A third species, the Tapanuli orangutan (P. tapanuliensis), was identified definitively in 2017. The orangutans are the only surviving species of the subfamily Ponginae, which diverged genetically from the other hominids (gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans) between 19.3 and 15.7 million years ago." @@dl2839

Running the world like you are describing would cause the large majority of the planet's population to die of starvation in just a couple hundred years.
@Fungo Slungo And at the rate we are going we will be completely out of phosphorus in 80 years
I almost wish the species stayed undiscovered, for their own sake.
Don't think it would have made a difference sadly
Now that environmentalists are aware of an endangered species, it probably gives them more leverage in protecting the land from development.
Species always go extinct with or without human involvement that is part of evolution...if there's a small amount left they are just another species becoming obsolete that's how it works

What do orangutans do when they're mad at each other?
They have a Gorilla war!
"New Species Of Orangutans Found"
Scientists: "yo get the tools"
When orangutans 🦧 saw humans, they called their scientist and agreed that humans are the new animals with a tail from the front. What a stunning evolution.
Less than 4 years of it's discovery, and it's already an endangered species
I wonder how many unknown species we have destroyed without even realising it. Let's leave these guys alone and in peace....
Well you’re gonna have to bring their argument to those billion dollar corporation’s
Orangutans are just the gingers of the ape world. There, I said it

Primates are just. Magical imo.

Thanks for the compliment :)
It’s scary how recognizable great apes are. Almost human looking but just not quite there.
Nah, still an ugly monkey
I feel dogs and dolphins are closer emotionally
The children look even more human, because they don't have sagittal crests, ridges on the back of the skull where muscles anchor to to provide more bite force. As a drawback, sagittal crests restrict brain size, so humans evolved our skulls to permanently underdeveloped, so that we can have a larger brain size at the expense of our bite force.
Essentially, humans are big baby monkeys.

This 'new' species is a hybrid between two distinct species of Orangutang, the name Orangutang in certain Filipino dialects translates to 'Old man of the forest'.
Is there any orangutan in filipino?
yuko mulyono No. Not sure about the translation into Filipino, but Orangutans come from Indonesia and can only be found in Borneo & Sumatra. Orangutan means “Man of the Forest” in Indonesian.

🤣, locals found them first in 50's and then starting to hunt and eat them coz they're canibals, but they keep secret n quite and then my government found them 3 years ago after open forest for Wood resources, so since then our government put a lot forest rangers and soldiers to protect that rare orang utan, don't worry they will be okay, coz animal primate experts is coming from Australia and USA to help our government to safe their populations

Wow. Thank you.
First person to discover the orangutan: look it's a shiny!
Hey look a secret species! Let’s tell everyone about it.
Makes me wonder how they got the number 800. Someone counted everyone of them?
Or ask them how many family members they each had?
Lol
@Jack Schneider yeah, you’re probably right
They probably do estimates and math
There are probably several ways.
Actually count a small number of orangutans, observe them for a while, so you know how much territory they use, generalize this number of urangutans to number of square kilometers ratio to the whole area where they are thought to live to get an estimate.
Or estimate the productivity of the area in biomass available to the orangutans for eating, so to get an estimate.
If you really want to know, read the papers.
@L S LOL
@@Danquebec01 Right, maybe that’s how they do it. No need to be so hard on. Just that whenever I watch a new documentary on discovered/endangered species, the numbers they pulled just made me ‘lol’.
I hope @TierZoo will make a walkthrough for this creature, its not everyday you find a secret character!
So we still haven't found those deceptive dropbears but have found a new primate
It's not a new species, there's only one species of Orangutan.
"There are 3 species of orangutan. The Bornean, the Sumatran and the recently confirmed new species (as of 2017), the Tapanuli. These great apes are only found in the wild on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra."
"Orangutans are great apes native to the rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia. The orangutans are the only surviving species of the subfamily Ponginae, which diverged genetically from the other hominids (gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans) between 19.3 and 15.7 million years ago."
