  • Peter Gilroy from Bonny Doon creates small components using the mini coining die shot plates. He starts by making metal shot from wire and then uses the Monster bench block, a hand punch and 2-lb. brass mallet to get crisp details. Peter also demonstrates using the coining dies with your hydraulic press to get clean impressions. Finally, he walks you through polishing the die to keep it in like-new condition, delivering the results you count on.

Something I figured out years ago is to use a stationary planishing hammer (my students call it the Bammer) to hammer the shot into the plate. The guided and sprung hammer face goes down parallel to the heavy base so you cannot veer off at an angle and accidentally damage your plate. 2 or 3 strikes and you have great results all day long. Plus I put a little mineral oil in the plate impression for clean removal. You heard it here first! Carl Stanley from Carl Stanley Jewelry Arts - Santa Barbara, CA

That's a great tip! I don't have a "Bammer" but i might have to get one now! One thing to note, the way these dies and punches are precision hardened means that the punch is slightly softer than the die, so it would take some real effort to damage the die.
