This song touches me deeply no matter how many times I watch this video or hear this song. I can very much relate to this and many of his other songs as they describe my daily struggle over the past 25+ years. Ren has been able to express through his songs what I have been unsuccessfully trying to communicate to others regarding my mental, emotional, and physical struggles. I would also recommend you also check out Ren's other collaboration with Chinchilla, "How to Be Me," as well as their busking sessions in Brighton. As for "Chalk Outlines," it is one of my favorite songs right now; it is beautiful yet sad.
Given Ren's medical history, I interpret this song to address mental illness diagnoses, and prescription psychotropics, which leave you emotionally dead (hence, the chalk outlines around your dead self). I can attest to the reality of this; for over 15 years, I was prescribed a cocktail of max doses of psychotropics until I decided to carefully wean myself off all medications in 2014. The side effects of the drugs were too many and too severe, left me an emotional zombie, and the benefits were negligible. I still struggle with my mental health and physical symptoms daily, but I rather feel pain than nothing at all.

I have been watching Ren busking live for seven years but this is my favourite of all his songs because it is so hauntingly beautiful.
Another great thing about Ren's music is that it is encouraging other people to discuss their own mental health issues. The stigma is melting away.

You've fallen down the same rabbit hole as me, so glad I found Ren and his music - gives me hope that there is still originality and as Frank Zappa said, 'Music is the best'. Your reactions are very sincere, I've loved watching people's reactions to Ren's work as it is like seeing it again for the first time. Very moving.
You're doing better than I did. By the time Chinchilla started singing, I was already sobbing. This is my favorite song by them. Gorgeous, excruciating, haunting, necessary.

Since I was very fortunately introduced to the music of Ren, through, "The Big Push" at first, I have not stopped smiling with joy, at the most immediate, urgent artist of current times.
He gives so many of us such hope though his music, as dark as the themes may sometimes be.
A sheer joy to watch.

I think Ren and Sam (the other amazing singer he was busking with) direct and produce the videos together.
I would recommend seeing Ren X Chinchilla How to be Me, but I'd suggest the live version of that before a lyric video as someone else suggested. That's another powerful song that really shows off both their vocal abilities so well, and it's an incredibly moving song, too.
It is a different Sam, the singer is Sam Tompkins (who was opening for Justin Bieber in his European tour). The videographer is Samuel Perry-Falvey.
I was corrected in that the videographer is a different Sam but I can't say that the singer Sam doesn't have something to do with an aspect of production.
@@DyvmSlorm I don't think so but Sam Tompkins and Ren collaborate time to time and are friends. Ren does almost all of his beats btw. Directs the videos as well, but the cinematography in many are done by Samuel. Ah btw Samuel is the one driving the car in this video :), he is in front of the camera for a change.
Sam Tompkins is a talent in gigs own right, but no he has nothing to do with any of the beats, music production or videography. The Ren stuff is all Ren & Sam (not Tompkins) not being critical, but want to see the right guy get the cudos! He collaborates singing wise with different people & his friends take part in some videos, Illest of Out Time, “What you Want”, Fish eye”, etc, the backbone to his solo work is all him! Just saying!

Really enjoying your reactions to the beautiful gift that is Ren. Not necessarily to react to, but there are two songs I listened to today where Ren offers a very raw and vulnerable insight into the sum that is he. "Depression" is like nothing I've ever experienced. A human being could not be more vulnerable than he is in this song. The last minute is beyond words and not for me to tell. It's personal and can be shared only by Ren. The second is called "Dear God" and again he found the strength to put into words what must of been so difficult to do so.
