Ren Gill, a dynamic singer, guitarist and songwriter, was born in Wales. Known by his stage name, Ren, he came to attention on the pavements of bath where he played with an indie-pop band called Trick the Fox.
Chinchilla is a British singer-songwriter who describes her music as "kind of fiery soulful empowering pop”. She is best known for being the support act on the latest McFly tour in 2021. She has released two EPs, Awakening (2020) and Moon Maintenance For Dummies (2021), and several singles, such as Elements, Fabulous, Demand Respect, Cold Water, How to Be Me, The Lockdown Getdown, and Fingers.
Ren X Chinchilla - Chalk Outlines (live) is a video of a live performance of a song called Chalk Outlines by British artists Ren and Chinchilla. The song was released on December 15, 2021 and is produced and written by Ren. Both Ren and Chinchilla have commented that from the time they met, they were like siblings, understanding each other's performances and humor. You would enjoy their collab I Forgot How to be Me - another extraordinary song, and vocally very different.

One thing that makes this piece catch your heart is that they are not listening/matching each other. They are each singing WITH the other with their being. It gets captured here and is captivating.

Chinchilla: Fingers live, absolutely!
I found Ren in mid January. I honestly have no idea why he isnt mainstream yet. So much talent.
Ren oozes talent - his voice, his expressive guitar playing,his lyrics, his melodies and his performance. Like nothing I've seen in years. The reason I think he is not mainstream is his songs are not upbeat in their message. They dwell on unpleasant things and and there are many people who don't want to listen to that kind of music. I am not one of them - his music is wonderful, never mind the message.
The mainstream music industry only want soulless,clueless generic stooges who they can screw over and then throw away when they are no longer useful.
Unfortunately…or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, he refuses to sign to a major label where they have major distributing and marketing power. He would be a household name overnight if there was an entire marketing team working around the clock to make it happen. However, he refuses to sign to a major label because he refuses to change who he is or his music to fit into that mainstream. Plus he said in a recent interview that he actually doesn’t care about becoming rich or famous he just wants to live comfortably and put his art into the world for people to enjoy.
Same. I was put on to Hi Ren in December as it really started to take off. I'm listening to his music all the time now and can't help but think it's only a matter of time before he gets huge. It's not like we're listening to a couple of decent tracks or something... His back catalogue is massive and so varied. There is so much to explore. I wouldn't usually listen to much in the way of rap music but even that stuff is compelling due to the story telling in there.

Chinchilla - Fingers (Live for HungerTV) would be a great reaction.
There's quite a few videos of Ren and Chinchilla busking together, so they likely have quite a bit of time singing together. For some reason when she says "Sertraline and a sip of serotonin" it get's me every time. I've probably heard this 100 times, and someone is always cutting onions.
Because its how some of us feel every day.

You need to react to the How to Be Me live performance. I love these two so much and that performance just makes me cry everytime.
Ooh yeah, How To Bé Me or Fingers live, both well worth thé time spent listening.
Chinchilla is a spirit. The lights flickering was her drawing energy so she could manifest and sing a haunting song with Ren.
This is especially haunting when Chinchilla’s voice sounds like cries towards the end. They are very in sync but still distinguishable and distinct. How To Be Me is a vocal pas de deux more than a duet. Their voices sort of swirl around one another almost like smoke. It’s crushingly beautiful.
Oh, he knowsss. 😊 And choosing the space with acoustic is one of his skills. Especially evident in The Tales of Jenny Screech and Violet.
Now check out Chinchilla's performance Fingers (live). It really shows her wild skill and it's FIERCE.
Best video (IMO) for Ren's vocal skill (and is much more playful) is probably him with Sam Tompkins busking, doing Earned it /Mans World / Falling
Independent artists like Ren and Chinchilla need exposure on big channels like this. Thank you! Plus, their vocals are amazing, and your breakdown of technique is always very interesting.
This is by far my favourite Ren & Chinchilla song. As many will comment, the song hits those of us who have delt with severe pain over time and depression. But it is still uplifting.
I play it when I'm having a bad day and feel better for a while.

Chinchillas elements lyric video is a fun one and then her fingers live will set the bar for you going forward when it comes to singers.
Beth, great reaction and analysis. You make a great point about the rawness and imperfection at the end. If this had been clean and perfect, you would lose much of the emotion and impact. It is the imperfection that made it perfect. I hope you do more Ren and more Chinchilla.
Brilliant analysis as always, Beth. A natural progression from this will be their How To Be Me, which is once again, live. It is an amazing song and performance.
I love the rawness and admire the courage of doing these live recordings as the main video rather than an obscure "unplugged" version. Having seen a couple interviews with Ren and Chinchilla, they describe each other as artistic siblings and I love all of their duets.
How to be me LIVE is a must ..ive never felt a duet done so emotionally like this song
My stray suggestion out of Rens collection would be "Humble (Feat. Eden Nash)". It showcases another facet of his voice and instead of hitting hard in the watery eyed feels, sooths and makes you feel all fuzzy inside.

You need to hear him and Chinchilla doing a song called How To Be Me (live version), incredible collab lyrics and vocals on a song about a friend he had who lost due to suicide, every song in his catalogue in all different genres has never ceased to amaze me, he is what is making music relevant and interesting again, i hope you keep going down the Ren rabbit hole, once i did...i just enjoyed my stay there.

As far as I know, they both suffer from Lyme Disease which makes Beth's comment about two people sharing an experience that more insightful.
I have to jump on the bandwagon here. "How To Be Me" and "Fingers" live by Chinchilla will both knock you out, then "I Shot the Sheriff" by Ren and The Big Push, where his voice is almost unrecognizable from these, but STUNNING. Loved your reaction!
There are at least three versions of The Big Push doing that song. The one you want is the "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop" one, with Ren in red braces.

I think you'd also be interested in the complete uniqueness of, "Fingers" (Live for Hunger TV), which is Chinchilla solo with a piano. It is something I'd love to hear your thoughts on. When you're constantly fighting, both physically and emotionally, the struggle to feel better is always an up hill battle. Pills will numb you to everything for just a while but at a cost. You're not you. You're numb. On the days where you feel "fine", you're so worried about that mindset changing that you can't focus on the day you could be having. It's a helpless, turbulent cycle.
Please don't forget to take care of yourselves.
I'll add the hundredth comment suggesting the live version of How To Be Me by Ren and Chinchilla. As good as this one is, that one gives me insane goosebumps every time.
Also, as others have also mentioned, Chinchilla's solo stuff is excellent, and the version of Fingers Live for HungerTV is not only good but really interesting in the way she delivers the words vocally.

I saw another person who interviewed Chinchilla. She said this was indeed one take and they really didn’t rehearse it all the way through. Just parts. They basically are so in tune they sang off each other in this recording. Pretty amazing.

Im a 38 year old man and this song ALWAYS brings a tear to my eye. "How To Be Me (live)" by the both of them is even more soul touching.
Nothing is better than a song of truth-good or bad-he delivers his truth with such conviction and lyrical strength that can't be ignored. This duet is superb! Her raised vocal at the end there breaks my heart everytime. What a great pairing!!
REN is a portal to another musical universe, and a modern day Pied Piper. Artistically brilliant and a peach of a human.

Chinchilla Fingers (Live) should definitely be on your list. It shows what she is vocally capable off and she is a powerhouse
Something I found interesting on this track was when Chris Liepe did his reaction he pointed out Ren taking influence from Jeff Buckley in the way he sings. Ren later commented on that video to say that he used to use Chris’ videos on how Jeff Buckley sang to learn how to sing!
You definitely need to check out their other main collab “How To Be Me” though as well as “Fingers (Live)” by Chinchilla

I agree with you regarding his lyrics. The lyrics in all of his songs are so simple and so powerful and brilliant at the same time. He never fails to impact your emotions on every song.
The fact that they can do this in one take is mind blowing. I love how Ren's voice cracks at the end and they just leave it in there.

Thank you for doing this. I found your channel about a year or so ago and I appreciate how you break down the technical aspects of singing. I know nothing about the art of singing but I learn so much from your reaction videos. When I found Ren in January, I wanted to know if what I was hearing was as good as I thought it was, from a technical side, and I really wanted to hear your reaction to it. I even sent you an email asking for one haha. Your reaction never came and I thought maybe you did hear it and didn't want to say anything bad, because I don't know what I'm hearing. I'm glad you do seem to appreciate it too, and I did recognize the quality of the songs. On a side note, I have since discovered that there are a lot of song reaction channels. I didn't know there were so many. I still like your break downs. Thank you

me and my buddy share this song, if we need and find it correct we share it together and time later after over n over listening we settle in and are done for the time being. there is tons to dissect when it comes to song build and such but for me n buddy its lyrics, so we share it together and keep at it till it eases up together. Ren and Chinchilla is doing great vocal work. putting very much emotion into the text and music. they arent singing a pre-written song by someone they are singing lyrics they know and mean. "been there, done that" situation. they been involved in situation so they can put the emotions into it. not just say the words but mean them.
I would like to add my voice to the calls for a reaction to Ren & Chinchilla's "How To Be Me [Live]". Get the tissues ready - I'm a 58 year old bloke and I cry every time I hear it... the emotion, the harmonies, the lyrics, the sentiment. Simply Beautiful.

Hi Beth, thank you for reviewing this song. Not only is it a wonderful performance by both Ren and X Chinchilla but Ren puts into words how my life has been for nearly 50 years. "I'm still here in this bed that I crawled in, I hope I am someone else in the morning" that is me.
Any how, it is such a wonderful performance, like most of Ren's and X Chinchilla's music, I can sit back and just enjoy the brilliance of the song without delving deep into the subject matter.
