    There's something perfect about how you frame the shot, the sound of the piano, and how you play. It's a rare treat to see talent up front, and I'm still learning plenty too. If you ever play the UK I'm there. Stay cool Kent.

      Dan, Thanks! That's a great compliment...particularly because I'm low-tech and I only use a Canon Powershot S-95 for sound and video and a free Windows editor. Most people doing this are using complex hi tech equipment. Some of my relatives are from UK. Swing loose!

    Love these two new videos which I discovered while trying to find where I left off in the beginning jazz series. I fell off the "piano practice wagon" for a little while due to home restoration issues, but I'm back now. I'm really excited to continue and even bought your book this morning. Can't wait to dig in and apply the material. I'm sure it will help me work through your many wonderful free videos. Can't thank you enough for your unwavering dedication to jazz education. It must give you tremendous satisfaction to know you are helping so many people improve their skill at this mind bending genre. You are a treasure!

    This video is great because you could use this for laid back and fast jazz too. Core concepts explained through a simple exercise. Also you focus on everything other pianists don’t. It’s definitely a first step to jazz that I couldn’t find anywhere else. I know it’s good to understand different modes, chord progressions, modulations, and how to input them properly, but you need to understand the flow and all the fundamentals before tackling advanced stuff. Great tutorial for people beginning jazz improvisation!

    when you put the syncopation in it.. it brought it alive.. Basically I learned it from humming and singing.. the metronome won't do that..I didn't realize what syncopation was until years into music.. had a vague idea but always learning.. btw I'm getting the herbie Hancock riff down in all the keys.. i have the g minor one down almost perfect. I just kept at it. Another thing that has helped me and I'll pass this on. The brain will work things out.. I've gone to sleep and woke up and played
    guitar solos and likewise piano pieces. A simple coffee break., lunch, a phone call,etc. There is something about these interruptions that does a. rain reset. Also after practicing physically demanding piano parts,,got body will also sync in with brain. and it does eventually. become natural.

    Excelente video, tengo 65, soy aficionado a la música desde niño, toqué guitarra desde los 13 canciones de Beatles, hendrix, clapton y stones. Por mi madre aprendí amar la ,única de Beethoven, paganini, liszt y bach y rachmaninoff. Jack loussiere, amstrong, goodman los aprendí de mi papa. Me interesé en el piano y empezaba a preguntarme cómo evolucionar de las escalas tradicionales mayor, menor y alteraciones ( séptima, novena, etc.) al mundo exótico del jazz. ¡Y AQUÍ LO ENCONTRÉ! Muchísimas gracias a Kent, pero muchas muchas.

    Very good exercise. Also, very stressful...but worthwhile. I've been doing this lesson (at the highest step #8) for the past several weeks and it has done wonders for my confidence. It shook my confidence in the beginning but over time, it has built it back up. Also, I've been using various randomly selected syncopations (I write it down), which adds to my stress level but it sounds great. Sometimes, the beat is 1, 2&, 4, and other times, it's 1&, 2, 3&, 4&. I use dice and a reference chart to get my randomized beats.

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Different types of soloists....
    1) Beginner - When the band asks who wants to take a solo they avoid eye contact at all times and stop speaking so as not to draw attention to themselves
    2) Mr I. Amsafe - Regurgitates the exact same scales arpeggios and licks for every solo cause they work or just too lazy/scared to move out of their comfort zone
    3) Living Dangerously - uses theoretical knowledge of the chords to just play stuff he has never played on the spur of the moment..sometimes its bad sometimes its great :)
    4) Already hears the solo in his head before he has played it. Doesnt go by any name!
    5) Fret Wanker - speaks a lot but doesnt actually say anything

In chords I used your ii, v, i as a base for key c 1M7- 2m7- 5dom 7(2nd inversion) -1M7-- 1DOM7--4M7--3m7--2m7 -- 1M7 -- 1 dim7--2m7--5dom7--1M7.     What does adding 8th note mean?

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      An 8th note gets 1/2 a beat, so there are technically 8... 8th notes in a measure of 4/4 time. As in math, two 8th notes equal one quarter note.

    Hey Kent, thanks for the lesson. Really helpful. I was wondering, when you get into the syncopation steps, are you hitting that target tones on the ands of the beat? Or are the ands for the approach tones

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Without looking at the video again, I would say that it's both. The target tones will fall often on the off beats (or an's) that makes jazz syncopation really swing, but also they will fall on the down beats. Good question. Check out bebop notation...that should help you to understand it, if you analyze it.

  •  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You lost me in step 2 when adding passing tones. You never explained what they were or where they came from. You moved too fast for me to see and understand what you were doing. Could you explain passing tones please? I hear them referred to often with no explanation. Is passing tone played with the cord before the target tone or in the cord with the target tone, which cord does passing tone go with? Where do you get passing tone from. Target tone comes from cord. Target tone comes from? I apologize I know this is elementary for you and many of your students.

      I thought I covered that in this video. But I now have 250 videos , so I can't remember. Please go to my videos on jazz improvisation from my playlists (see below) . Start with the easiest ones...they will explain target tones and passing tones, and how to use them in composing and improvisation.

    How do you separate your foot from your hands? I, for the life of me, can't consciously tap my foot while playing "out of rhythm" in the right hand. Do you have any tips?
    As an aside, totally love your videos. As someone who was only classically trained for 9 months, this really opens up Jazz Piano for me, so thank you.
    Keep on bein groovy Kent.

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the question. It's a good one, and perhaps would make for a useful video. There's a step- by- step process that will help you, involving playing quarter notes connecting with the foot beats, then 8th notes, then emphasizing the 2nd, 4th, etc, 8th notes (off beats: those not on the beat), eventually leading to playing syncopation in hands while keeping steady quarter note beat with foot. Using a metronome will help.

    I have a question - Instead of making up my own melody, I could just use a melody from a simple jazz standard and then follow all the steps you did here, correct?
    All the things you are
    C jam blues
    autumn leaves
    If you have others that you think would be a good place to start feel free to add to it.

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, you can use any song. I used a common 8 measure progression so I could keep it short. Most songs will be 32 measures. (blues are generally 12 measures).

    Rewatching this.. watching your other one on same subject.. you just posted. I passed a a musical milestone .. my base clef note recognition is just as good as the Trebble clef. I don't use every good boy .. that's a crutch.. we should know the notes as they are.. My problem is timing now. I can keep time with my ear, but seeing the music and getting the right timing
    quickly is my present battle. I wish it came easy. My grandmother used to say if wishes were horses, beggars would ride. I look at this as a challenge. When a field is cleared of big rocks, you have to keep hitting them untill they crumble. The reason I use this analogy is that the rock seems like it's never going to crumble and then it does. Do you have any downloads that address timing specifically? working on the Oscar Peterson Dominants.
