      jonathanhj I want to show you a professional run but also want to give a little back ground on these wonderful chords. something that helps is remembering that when you have the single notes. c eb gb a as a four note chord they are formed with stack minor diads.. they also have 4 different forms . go up a whole step and stack minor thirds d f ab c the follow same patterns . here is the run it is a hand over hand r stands for right and l stands for left. ( d f ab b ) on right then left same pattern continue moving up the keyboard. then resolve to a c 6 arpegio egac. left hand first then right then left .. these arppegios burn things in your brain by learning these they make you learn these. I probably couldn't forget them if I tried. I've done them possibly a thousands of times.

    Don't have a piano with me..not even my 🎸. I am going to go over the sheet music. Misty would be a good thing to practice.. I get misty when I play all the alt chords and try to apply all these scales Ha Ha..not funny. But I could not play my nylon string guitar.. I loveve to play Fly me to the moon 🌝,chord melody style.
    My A and D string had broke on me a long while back I realized that I could unravel the strings from the tuner keys and should have my nylon string running in a few days. I think I have a few of fly me to the moon lessons on you tube. Anyways..I am now fairly decent on the half whole dim. scale..

    I didn't understand which chords can sit on each scale. so if you have an altered dominant run in one key, which dominant chords can fit over those runs? say for example you have the run in B (B, C, D, Eb, F, F#, G#, A, B), so which dominant chords could fit over that? You had said for C altered dominant, you could have C#, Eb, Gb, A, so what was the logic behind that? Thank you

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it's an altered dominant chord, then the scale starts with a half tone and alternates between half tones and whole tones. That's a symmetrical pattern. So once you go to the 3rd note of the scale the same pattern of notes repeats starting a minor 3rd higher. So the C family includes the Eb dominant, Gb dominant and A dominant. The families form a diminished chord which is intervals of minor 3rds.
      Watch this video for a better detailed explanation.

    Kent..hope you're well. I finally broke down and taught myself all 12 H. W Dom. Dim. scale. I literally have done them hundreds of times in a few sittings. Noticed that the last ascending note will be a whole tone or whole step. In C.. C Bb A G
    Gb E D# Db C.. In descending scale degrees ((8 b7 6(13) 5 b5 (#11) 3 #2(#9) b2(b9) 1 Root)
    As I did this..I realized that the scale could be seen loosely as a C6 and C7.. Add that together C13.. then the b9 and #9. above
    20 Years ago..while practicing I realized that the notes of C dim7
    and Db dim7 together made up a diminished scale. I didn't know anything about the H. W. Dim scale. I know you know this...
    C Eb Gb A and Db F Ab B ..
    together in order make up the H. W. scale C Db Eb E Gb G A Bb C.
    🔽See below for piano notes
    Db Eb Gb Bb
    C E G A C
    (In order. C Db Eb E Gb G A Bb C)
    The C H. W. Dominant Dim. Scale.

    Hello Kent. Thanks for this great video. A point of confusion for me is that each diminished scale works over 4 seperate chords. What your sheet music and the video demonstrates is mainly based on the scale resolving to F major. If I did the same exercise, but resolving to the key of Abmajor (meaning the dominant is Eb7) I assume that even though It is technically the same notes as when resolving to C, playing the exact same notes in the right hand wouldn't work as well as transposing, even though in both instances I'm playing the same scale, just at different positions. I know this is a slightly confusing question, but would I need to practice the runs you wrote out starting at different positions on the same scale when the key is for example Abmajor, Bmajor or Dmajor?

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's optional, since these are symmetrical patterns... you can start wherever it sounds good. Use your ears to decide. If you think of melody as the top note.... figure out what the melodic line should be. Write to my email.

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a video that explains that. I'll try to find a link. Usually the diminished chord can move up a half step to a minor chord as in "Aint' Misbehavin" or down a half step as in "Someday My Prince Will Come".
      In improv you would use the diminished scale resolving to a target tone in the minor chord. Check this:

    Thank you so much for the drills. They were great! I love them because I did a lot of drills as a child taking classical, jazz and blues lessons. I took piano lessons between the ages of 10 to 15 but when I became a teenager my mind went other places so I didn't quite finish up on all of my jazz lessons so this is great for me. Since that time I went on later in life to play gospel for church and to start my own band was plays R&B and Jazz, as well as funk, pop and other genres. Since that time I started several bands that played gospel, R&B and Funk, Jazz and other genres. So this lesson helps me and all of your lessons helped me as a band leader and an ever-growing, ever learning piano player

    .if you are advanced skip this comment. To make a dimiinished chord, just make the dominant chord .. like c7. c e g bb Now make the minor third, flatted fifth and the flatted flat 7. Notes c eb gb a.. The inversions of these are the different forms. Draw the 4 note sequence c dimished. Move up the keyboard in minor3rds . the next dimished chord starts with eb gb a c..just keep moving the circle of notes around as you would do any inversion..I struggle with certain musical concepts. But I can help with the way that I learned.

    I've been studying the diminished scales and how to apply them .while doing your diminnished runs on a 2 5 1. You gave 10 examples on the written sheets. Gm9 arp. Then the c half whole scale then the the one chord. The number two has an f# in it.. is that from a melodic minor. You did a similar thing on numbers 6 andr 7. A little ellucidation when you have the time.. I hope I was clear..

    Wow so generous and even the sheetmusic avaible !!!
    just a little mistake at 3;32 when talking on diminished altered scales (or altered dominant scales as you name it ) considered as a minor melodic a half step above , it is more for the 'altered mode scale' ( 'diminished whole tone scale '), the dimished altered scale have a perfect fith and major sixth in it. Maybe it will help others analysing correctly all your great work .

    I love your idea!
    Too much will sound mechanically.
    I personally don't like those kinds of playing!
    Keith jarret and chick corea when they play, it is technically great and harmoniously theoretical impressive but to the audience it isn't pleasing for me.
    I love the way you play! It has a feel and people can actually feel the emotion you are giving off to the audience. You have the sympathy to play music that could make the audience just look and listen with sincerity without sleeping, something that actually makes sense for the listener.
    Thank you kent and keep it up!

      +Mr. Razzie Binx Thanks Razzie, that's a very nice and perceptive comment. I'm glad I convey that feeling in my playing, Music has to have heart. Also I try to improvise melodically and with the sense of a story line (connected ideas). I've talked about this in my improv videos. However you can see by the number of comments here that people do like this type of concept: the symmetrical patterns built on a diminished scale. So there is something to it as far as a bank of knowledge.

If no luck try going to my old website kenthewitt.net Here's links: www.kenthewitt.com/free-music-downloads th-cam.com/video/07Qlhd_-p0s/w-d-xo.html Please let me know.

      Ed Vojtko I didn't find it right away. I do remember having to hit menu. I think it was three little dots.. they are there in fact I just downloaded Kent's version of Georgia on my mind.

    Really great improvisation tips and love the scales you're using. Have you any suggestions for backing tracks that just play a lot of jazz style chord progressions that one could then solo over the top of? I'm actually using your theory suggestions for alto saxophone, so I can't play my own backing chords! I'd happily buy a CD/MP3 that had some nice progressions and a list of what chords were being played to improvise over.

      James William check quist backing tracks .. you can always make backing tracks using Kent's scores and musescore.. btw way the videos teaching musescore are hard to understand.. go to the help section and read it.. it really does answer pretty much every thing one other thing my ctk4200 has a jazz combo rhytm. You can record a loop and practice .

    The downloaded scale runs says to use them on a C7alt chord. For your alt7 chord are you using 1-3-#5-b7?

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The scale automatically alters the chord by playing it of a straight C7 chord. However you could play a C7b9 or C7#9 using 1st Inversion voicings. There's no #5 (that would be a super locrian scale...check out my vid on that) but you could use a b5 because that's in the scale.
