I'm running a home brew of Forgotten Realms for my and the neighbors kids aged 8-12, so 4-5 players (1st level, evil campaign). I'm having them enter through a portal from the astral plane into a waiting room blocked from the guild by a secret wall. When they open the passage into the guild the alarm goes off leading to negotiations, fighting, or something unforeseen, we'll see...
I'm torn on if I want my players to meet the Xanathar. It could go sooo wrong, but I have a wicked Krang impersonation that I want to use as my Beholder voice.
One thing I'm confused by. You're talking as though the players know about The Xanathar. I thought the fact that the Xanathar was a beholder was a closely guarded secret that only a few people know. Is it fair to say that most people in Waterdeep assume that Xanathar is a humanoid (probably a human or elf)? Are you just working on the assumption that after gaining a few levels and making some allies the players learn what's up. Does that mean that literally every member of the Zhentarim, the Lord's Alliance, the Harpers, the Emerald Enclave etc, know that Xanathar is a beholder? Is it like any member of any of those organisations could share that information, which surely means it's not much of a secret.
the "players" probably know xanathar is a beholder because of "xanathars guide to everything" the "PCs' and "NPCs" wouldnt, until they got a first hand account of it!
@@NoFunAllowed thanks, but would a first hand account have to come from one of Xanathar's lieutenants or, e.g. a very senior Harper? Or could it come from any member of Xanathar's Guild or any Harper. I guess what I'm struggling with, if a major member of any faction knows that Xanathar is a beholder, why doesn't literally every member of that faction know this secret? Further, wouldn't any good aligned guild also share it with the general public?
Was super stressed about how to get my party into the Xanathar’s Lair. Turns out, they wanted to go down there themselves 🙏🏻
haha saves you the hassle!

My plan is to have Nihiloor try to convince the party to help get a tadpole into the Xanathar.
oo that can be some awesome subterfuege!
That was my thought. Somthing as arrogant as a mind flayer would have to try it eventually hahah
