Hey i liked your tips ..thank you very much.. i have a character design portfolio ... if could check it out and help me how i can improve it to get a CD job.. chak1902.artstation.com
Here's something shady IG does (and probably the other networks too): On 60 Minutes last year they revealed that likes you receive are withheld and then dosed to you at intervals based on your usage patterns. Think of the times you log in and get an avalanche of activity vs others when there's not. Long story short, they're using the neuro-chemistry of rewards & addiction to keep people hooked on using the platform. Why? Because you're not paying for using those free apps- advertisers are. Look up their story "Brain Hacking" for more information. Like you said in your video: "Don't let numbers discourage you". Quite right, especially when those numbers are being used to manipulate your behavior.
oh my gosh this is horrible, I had NO idea! it makes total sense how they're trying to get us addicted just so we see more ads. this is why I have trust issues with social media!
Its like, insta deletes my followers 3 times a day.. I dont get the 50 followers even if i had already pics that got liked like 35-54.. There are people actually liking my stuff and following but insta aint wont me to be succesful with my art.. Its so hard to deal with that. There already people following.. I was already 2 times on 48 and then 6 got deleted.. Irs just weird..
My insta keeps notifying me that I have 20 over likes but I’ve seen the same notification countless of times and those 20 likes are old news. I don’t use insta often so I’m guessing they just want to keep showing me to likes to get me to use it lmao.
@@VVfanXXLx3 That's not Instagram doing that. Some users on insta use the follow/unfollow methode to increase their follower count. They basically follow you so you follow them back. And as soon as you follow they will unfollow or if they follow you and you don't follow them back they unfollow you in the next 2 days.
It's so annoying that artists have to go such lengths to promote themselves to get any spotlight at all. I don't work in the industry and honestly, after hearing what it takes, I probably don't even want to. It just feels humiliating idk, I'll settle for my few notes on tumblr here and there and post for a small audience of loyal followers. Good luck for you, tho, you really deserve it for all the hard work you put into this.
I know right? Its also kinda unfair that we have to compete with people, posting their selfies or coffee from starbucks... No offense, anyone can post what they want, but looking at the effort you have to put in... I guess youre right to stay away......
Don't think that you need the spotlight to feel credible for your art. If it's your passion then keep going and DON'T give up! Social media has been making young people feel bad about themselves and it's now targeting creative people, don't let it! and don't feel like you're in competition, just do what you love!
This video put my mind at ease because I put all my art on Instagram and my follower count doesn’t budge. There’s a lot I can do better but I’m relieved it’s partially the system’s fault too!
Tumblr has gotten really bad, there was a time I used to get hundreds of notes, now I'm lucky if I get 30. I find that for getting followers it helps if you stick to one or two fandoms (if drawing fanart). I draw whatever I want from different anime to GOT to Disney to original art so I see my numbers fluctuate up and down a lot.
Algorithms are so frustrating! I love the community of artists I've found on Instagram but I definitely have to make an effort to check in with them in order to see if they're actively posting sometimes. I also find it helpful to not just like artist posts but engage directly when I see something I think is really cool.
This was so helpful! Especially the part about not re-writing your description after 24hrs, I didnt know that! I really love your art related videos, please do more :) xx
Thanks for sharing these tips! I didn’t know about the 24-hour editing affect for IG descriptions and I’m totally guilty of doing that all the time. I am really inspired by your art journey and appreciate all the insight you share on your channel. And your artwork is amazing!
I've been following you on tumblr for years!! But it wasn't till recently I started following your other social media accounts! I love you art work keep working hard even if the platforms are working against you!
To keep people interested, as it takes so long to get a new sculpt complete, I'm always posting to social media aiming people to my TH-cam gallery channel. (videos seem to show the sculpture work better than a bunch of 2D pics).
One thing that helped my Instagram find an audience (despite algorithms and all this other nonsense) is I found a community of other beagle accounts spanning the globe that all use the same tag to stay in touch. It's more than just using the tag on all my posts though. There's also participation with the group- the SOCIAL part of social media! If there's a similar group out there for artists (or whatever), consider getting involved, at least as much as you're able or willing to. If there isn't, start one yourself. Odds are there's probably other people out there in the same boat. Networking, networking, networking (as they say in business school)...
that's awesome! I use some similar tags with my french bulldog's account, there's a huge amount of networking with frenchie owners which is super cool.
Thanks for this! It's really a shame how much research needs to go into your social media sites of choice before you can give yourself the best chances with their algorithm.
Wow, thanks for the tip about not editing your Instagram description!! That's one I've never heard and I usually always change it so I will stop doing that, lol
Hi I work as a sr. graphic designer at the moment working my way up the graphic designers ladder, but I always felt that at heart I'm a doer, a drawer, illustrator, character designer. I'd like to know about illustration as a job too, maybe a book illustrator? I gravitate towards children's books and being able to come up with unique characters. Having a ton of experience with many aspects of graphic design (restaurant fast food industry). What advice would you give someone that wants to break out of their corporate shell (I love what I do by the way and its very rewarding with promos, photography shots that I do as well) and just focus on one thing?
Thanks I now use Apple Pencil no screen protector on Ipad pro. I like to doodle daily in my Instagram and sketch movie posters for my movie reviews on weekends, in my Instagram, the sketches of movie posters are my most popular posting on my Instagram. I would like to use those same sketches in my twitter, or should i make all new content for my twitter which will include my movie reviews, Daily thoughts ,etc. Should I always different content on different platforms?
I love when go through artist's Twitter and their pictures are a bunch of gifs or those pictures with lots of hearts they're responding to a friend or something like plz nu
Never heard the don't edit 24 hrs after posting, rule! Oh nooooooo .....I edit immediately after I post! 😆 No wonder I hardly have any followers for my paintings! 😢
If I have twitter and instagram, do I need to make differnt artworks for both. Should i make artwork for Instagrma and Artwork for twitter or can post the same artwork across both platforms
Hey, Laura! I'm starting to see the power of social media and want to see how it works out for me. If you do decide to change your username in the future, does it effect your follower count? I can foresee that a sudden change will have your followers confused and then suddenly unfollow.
hey! I wouldn't worry too much about changing your username in the future. I was originally lulutumbles on tumblr before finding a name that I could be across (most) of my social media. as long as you don't change the content you've been posting. sometimes popular instagrams will make a post if they decide to change their username, and explain why :)
Thank you for this! I've been having trouble with this for a while :) Had no idea that Instagram changed their algorithm, I used to get a lot of activity on my posts but it's plummetted recently (sort of like with your Tumblr!). I'll definitely try your tips!
hey! This is great advice! Found your link here thru Twitter, so I definitely see you which is good! The algorythms are crazy out here that's for sure. I like to space my art posting between platforms, I dunno why, it just works out for me when I do it. but it's been a slow, steady crawl. Hope things are well with you! Subscribed.
You say follow hashtags, and I'd love to, but Instagram doesn't allow me to follow hashtags on my art account. The error message "couldn't follow hashtag" always comes up. Does anyone know why, or even better how I can fix this?
Amazing video Laura! 💕 For that one Instagram link, there's a loophole! Many users put in an app called "link tree" or "carrd co". These are one link options for Instagram that allow you to link to all of your other social media when followers click that one. Hope this helps! 💜
Is there an online class that I can take to learn all of this stuff!? There is so much here and even if I watch this 10 time I'm still not going to get it. I learn by doing not by listening. And suggestions?
what does it mean that you 'follow hashtags'? How do you follow a hashtag? And is a hashtag an actual account being run by a person or...? Gosh I sound thick dont I?
Thank you for this tutorial and good presentation Laura👍 I'm also Art painter and used Instagram, but is not easy to post a tutorial video from youtube👍
I'm going to share this with my friends. Thanks What's weird about social media is you can post your own original art it could get less then a dozen likes, but if you post a photo of what you bought that could get hundreds..... it's almost creepy.
Good tips, thank you! I miss the days of Instagram being chronological. I don’t want to see the same posts I already saw three days ago on top of my feed :/
I was never able to use Tumblr. The first day I made an account, they IP banned me with no explanation, and when I contacted them to appeal the decision they never responded. I never made a single post. Thanks, Tumblr.
I have similar woes on Flickr... I am an armature photographer... I have gotten some likes, but it seems like there ought to be more... Maybe it's the algorithm?
I post ofton 2 times like.. If my work dont gets its 10 likes in 10 min i delete it and post it a few seconds or min. Later and it gets like 20 in 10 min.. Its tricky and a few might think its weird but it works!
I got 70 followers on Instagram for 3 days. But I have Tumblr for a month and I don't have a single note for my post. The ironic thing is that the drawings that bring me around 100 likes on Instagram and Amino bring me 0 notes on Tumblr.
Instagram is kind of restricting, but you can make your one link lead to linktr.ee and have a bunch of links there. Great video, I learned some new things!
Great advice Laura! Also if you want to add more links on your instagram description you should use Link tree! It directs people to a list of links so they wont have to search you manually :)

Had to *like that* because it's *true*
i was about to comment that

Tumblr is a Christian site now.

It's too expensive, can you Laura your price
OK that actually made me laugh 😂
Editing screws up your views...
But i edit all of my posts, pretty much every single time.
This explains a few things.
This was so helpful! Especially the part about not re-writing your description after 24hrs, I didnt know that! I really love your art related videos, please do more :) xx
Choco Oreo how to not rewrite ?

I’ve been on tumblr for over 7 years and NEVER KNEW ABOUT THE FIRST 5 HASHTAG THING. WHAT.
Thanks for the tips! I'm going back through it later to make written notes.
Things stick in my head better that way.
Wonderful advice as we’re always trying to be one step ahead these days!
Wow, thanks for the tip about not editing your Instagram description!! That's one I've never heard and I usually always change it so I will stop doing that, lol
