This is so helpful thank you! I actually reached out to Elsa Chang about a year ago asking for a critique on my portfolio and she was able to respond. She gave me great advise on how to improve and what I needed more practice with and suggested I look at Chris Oatley for more helpful tips. Honestly hearing back from her was so heart warming because like you mentioned in your video, professionals have very limited time so for her to take the time to help was amazing.
My teacher assigned us to contact a professional in our desired field of study. It was so hard to get anyone to give me the time of day. I ended up forging the answers myself bcuz I couldn't get anyone to respond. I think reaching out to professionals for an assignment sounds cool, but in hindsight, an actual professional in the industry doesn't have the time of day to talk with students just because they have an assignment.
I just wanted to say thank you for being so nice and helpful to the community. I hope to see your channel skyrocket so it can help other people who haven't found you yet, but honestly, the fact that you're so insightful and knowledgeable to us speaks volumes as to how wonderful of a person you are. I love art but I struggle to do it because I suffer from anxiety and depression on a horrendous scale, so I beat myself up and I never want to "try" at anything. But when I watch your videos they make me forget about that for a time. Thank you
gabbie or something this is such a nice comment, thank you! I struggle with an anxiety disorder too and it can have a negative effect on my art. I think creating art and videos has been helping my mental health in the long run though 😊 thanks so much!!
So I'm an animation student at SCAD and I'm coming up on that time when I need to do stuff like making decisions about my portfolio and building it and figuring out how to land a job after I graduate. This video was SOOOOOOO helpful to me! It's really good to know how to approach professionals in the field and what I should try to narrow down for myself moving forward. Thank you so much for making this it's a life saver!!!
you're very down to earth in your videos !! i just recently found your channel and i love it ! i'm an aspiring animator, and i've found your videos to be very inspirational
I actually have that school assignment interview now!! It's for literary journalism and I chose illustrators 'cause I like watching art videos anyway. SO that's how I found this channel. The great news!!! Due to the social distancing, my professor said it's okay to use a TH-camr who has answered all the questions already as an interview. So thank you for making so many videos I can get an in depth look at the animation industry!! (I don't do YT comments)
Oh man I got the school assignment interview. It was so awkward to just... ask recruiters and people I barely knew to just let me in their studio and talk to them.
I am loving your videos! Super inspired by you, I have loved Disney my whole life and to see a fellow artist succeeding and doing something they love makes my heart happy! You absolutely deserve it. I'd absolutely love to work for an animation studio/Disney one day but I need to work on my portfolio. To be honest I'd be happy to create licensed work haha :) Going to work super hard over the next few months improving my work and towards my goal. I LOVE environmental pieces like you create! I've just started getting into it but I definitely feel I need to add more to my portfolio :) Thank you for all the advice you give with your bubbly personality!
Omg you are a straight up ANGEL! I want to get into this industry but I'm a graphic design major and my university won't let me do Animation/Illustration so I'm basically on my own. Your videos are incredibly helpful and I really appreciate that you took the time to make these videos. I look forward to getting into this industry one day ☺
I found your videos not long ago, and I have been binging them ever since. I am studying animation and have just started going back to school, your videos have been so encouraging and uplifting when a lot of people just want to paint this industry as something difficult and unachievable. It's a joy to know there are other, passionate women working in the industry.
Your ongoing advice on the animation industry is such a kind thing to do. As we all know, it can be super bewildering to navigate, and it's so great that you're giving back to the community with valuable information. Kudos!
Just finished watching this video and I'm already watching it again to make sure I take notes of all these precious tips! I have a small TH-cam channel but I receive many repeated questions of things that could easily be found on Google, so I can only imagine how many of those you get every day. Thank you for sharing this, especially the part of reaching out to other artists who might not necessarily be in the industry. This is great advice!
Thank you so much for the advice, I always wanted to ask a professional artist like yourself and others for art advice and a better critique then to just “practice”. No one is very literal on what I have to fix. Your advice will help me in the near future when I do need critique or industry questions. This takes off a big load of stress of “if I’m messing up” or “am I wording things correctly”! I’m saving this video for the future when I need again!! Thank you ^^
Another fantastic video again! I'm absolutely in love with the content and information you put in your videos (in addition to your art, of course lol) Thank you!
I'm subscribing! I saw your last video about your journey as an artist and felt the same way! The rejection was so much on my confidence as an artist and seriously had me thinking " How could I get a job in something that I love, when I'm bad at it" . I'm now an upcoming 3rd yr animation major at MICA and your videos will definitely help when I'm applying to internships! Thank you so much!
Thank you for compiling all of these tips, its SO appreciated! I really enjoyed having the bonus about reaching out to recruiters at the end. You're amazing, thank you so much!
Thank you for your videos. They are very helpful. While I am not an artist, my daughter is, and I find myself forwarding your stuff to her all the time.
This was incredibly helpful and meaningful to me personally because I always wanted to know how to begin or develop a portfolio and reach out to professionals. I am right now studying advertising at an art school right now, but I have always been interested in animation. Just knowing that you dont specifically need to have studied animation or fine art in university is kind of a relief to me because I always thought it was a requirement. You just need to work hard and build on your talents. Thank you so much!
I remember getting that assignment of interviewing a professional from the industry for an essay in my animation course...while I understand the benefits of it but I knew that alot of people in the industry wouldn't like getting those emails. Especially when they're on a tight schedule themselves. It can feel like a time waster for both parties which doesn't make it worth it. Some really good tips in this video! :D thank you so much for making this! I've been watching your videos recently in order to get some inspiration and tips for applying for the animation industry and these have been helpful and giving me an insight!
I'm SO glad I have never done any of the "do not do's" and that I've done everything in the "please do's" Also I have been contacted TWICE about doing an interview when I wasn't even in the industry yet :))) Thank you for this video! Very helpful for many many people!!!
This was so helpful. The student assignment one was what I had to do at my university and it makes total sense for you guys not to answer them. The only difference was that we needed to do a video recording of the interview as opposed to a written interview, which seemed really inconvenient for you guys :l Thankfully, we had another option which was to do an essay. Thanks for sharing this for everyone!
This is so helpful ! thank you for putting out this content it really helps and gets me motivated to start creating an animation portfolio ! I am literally obsessed with your videos 😍
Thank you very much for making this video! I'm going to be applying to a studio soon and I was getting really nervous because I was worried about what to do. This helped a ton! Thanks!!!
G'day Laura. Thank you for your wonderful video. Shortly after finishing my own animation degree here in Sydney, I did struggle to find work, in fact I didnt. Going by your video I may have approached them incorrectly, because on most occasion, I just did a cold call, with a follow up email. After some time, I did give up and tired to do my own business without luck. While I still have a passion and practice my animation, I have been concentrating on other creative areas (graphical designs). I do get passive feedback from some people, its not what they a looking for at this stage. However, watching your video has made me rethink that maybe its possible, despite the small industry here in Sydney. I just need to believe in myself and try as hard as I can. Thanks again. Great inspirational video.
Thank so much for your advice videos! They are so helpful and so positive. I've been on really bad artist blocks/burnouts but watching your videos really encourages me to fight through them. 😀
even if i'm not interested in being an artist of any sort I really liked this video it was interesting. And I just found your channel and really like your videos!
Your videos give me so much inspiration and it’s so amazing how much you have accomplished as an animator so far! I’m going into my second year of high school and my passion is the arts 🎭 I have good grades and am leaning towards becoming a psychologist, however, I dream of working at Disney animation just like you are doing right now. Thank you for helping me have hope to follow my dreams and that one day they could become a reality 💕
Aw man, I have to do that interview assignment and wanted to ask an animation professional, I wish I didn't have to bother one but if I don't do it I don't graduate high school ._.
thank you so much for the tips! im rn starting freshman year in art college, even so, i want to start making portofolios already! thank you for being an inspiration!
Thank you for not only putting all this information together but for also editing these videos. I’m sure it all takes a lot of time and this limits some questions you always get. That’s if people do their research. 😏
thank you for this! I recently got a comment saying how I don't put enough creativity or effort into editing my videos and I was like, I put SO MUCH effort into my videos! so thank you for noting that :) I guess this way I can just link my videos if I get questions I've answered on my channel at least haha
I had to do that assignment in my senior seminar class I hated doing it cause I just felt like I was bugging everyone!! I did end up getting an interview and some very awesome information and the artist was super sweet about it, but I still felt like the assignment was not even that necessary and the information I got was stuff I could've figured out on my own with experience or through a bit of research.

I’m 15 and I want to work in animation industry in the future and it looks like I need to learn digital art but I dont which tablet to get can someone help me and I really need someone to cheer me up because my parents doesnt believe in art in general and they say stuff like “ you are not going to accomplish smth by drawing “
Hi Laura! Thanks for making this video; I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge of the industry! There's something I'm curious about: do you know anything about freelance animation jobs--that is, if there are any special freelance job boards out there for animators? I'm trying to get into freelancing while I look for my first studio opportunity.
has your anxiety ever hindered your professionalism? (my biggest worry) .. how do you overcome this? love your videos! would be great to see a video about the transition of an artist to a professional artist! glad I found your page, have a nice day 😄 ✨🌸
My student turned me on to your channel, I'll have to thank her because you have a lot of practical advice to give artist. Do you know Chris Sonnenburg?
That's good advice for job hunting in general, thanks for posting! I haven't seen that many crash-zooms since Attack Of The Clones lol/jk I love it :) Keep up the good work!
Great tips. Do you recommend copyrighting art work? I’m focusing my talent on being a character designer but I’m apprehensive on putting my work ‘out there’ with the feeling my ideas will be stolen. I’m a bit possessive right now but will let it go one day. It’s a very grey area between artist inspired and theft. I’m learning the whole animation pipeline and will perhaps just put it on social media platforms such as YT to mark my content and originality. Only sure way to say ‘you saw it first’ on my channel. (Not this channel I’m currently on, but my real name). I’m torn between character design and character rigging though. It must be the engineering in me 🤔 My character designs definitely fall inline to Disney and Pixar themed animations. Something new. I’m thinking box office... Dreaming big 🤠 Nevertheless, as long as I grab some attention and not worry about the age old question of ‘what if’... Great channel. Thanks.
Hi Laura, I've started watching your videos this week and love your content. Your artists tips are excellent and it's great to see a professional being frank and honest about the industry. But I was wondering if you could perhaps someday do a video on plagiarism and the pitfalls of creating art and making sure it doesn't resemble other people's work (if you have the time, of course). I have had situations where I thought of something 'original' only to find out later it looked a lot like someone else's work, completely unintentionally. Have you ever gone through something like that and how did you deal with that and manage to stay original?
Hello, I just wanted to say that I am really glad that I found your channel because I wanted to be an animator and I dont know where to start. I am in college working my way through art and animation classes but after I graduated I got lost on what to do next. I was wondering if you have ever done internships before you started your career or did you have a mentor?
Conerning #4 : what if your knew to the field, (havent been to college) and want some feedback/ advice from someone in that area of animation.( i want to be a 3-D modeler.)
I have a really important question about recruiters: How do you even find them? Is there a website or do you just ask random artists and hope they are a recruiter??
Hey Laura! When applying as a background painter to a studio, how many pieces do you suggest we should have in our portfolio? Do you think it’s a good idea to make multiple bg for multiple “worlds” draw in different styles? (So they can see you can do different styles). Or is it enough to draw different kinds of bg of the same world in one style? Thanks for always creating informative and fun videos! :)
FactitiouslyFic good question! I think showing you can do multiple styles is a great idea. I would show around 10-15 pieces, and include your sketches and ideas you came up with before choosing your final piece! they love to see your thought process
Hi! My names Will and I’m 16 right now. I really want to work at a Disney animation studio. It’s been my dream since I was 6. I can draw ok but I really want to pursue animation. Any tips on how I might be able to get in.(yes I know, the video talks about this.) One more question. What programs for animation should I start I look into to? I’m more into the 3D animation, so that might help. Thanks and sorry for the questions. Very inspiring and I hope you and your work go well in the future.🙂
try to research schools with animation such as sva, calarts, ringling, otis and art center! i think it’s good to do life drawings in public places like cafes, parks, and malls!
If you are looking for a good 3D animation program, download blender. It's free, open-source and fully functional. It's powerful enough to create Disneyesque movies, same quality, everything.
To Laura or anyone reading this: is it okay if i reach out to an artist and offer help and services (for their projects lacking in budget) in exchange for a chance to learn or have an apprenticeship from said artist? i just really want to learn but don't have the money to go to art school or classes and i have exhausted the free tutorials of the internet and yet i feel stuck in my art. i just really want to learn and grow and to know the process of doing a personal project (on a similar category as the artist that i'm planning to contact) from scratch. i just want to know if doing this is rude or if i'm in over my head. thank you in advance! PS. Laura, i really love your videos! definitely subbed. :D
Her teeth are so perfect

G'day Laura. Thank you for your wonderful video. Shortly after finishing my own animation degree here in Sydney, I did struggle to find work, in fact I didnt. thank you! and yup I work with Chris!
Laura Price my animation studio is just down the street, I would love to take you guys out to lunch sometime.
love your art soo much!! I draw traditionally, and i was wondering how you find inspiration, out of work?
I hate the interview the professional thing because I know they hate it.
That's good advice for job hunting in general, thanks for posting!

It must be the engineering in me 🤔
My character designs definitely fall inline to Disney and Pixar themed animations.
Something new. I’m thinking box office... Dreaming big 🤠
Nevertheless, as long as I grab some attention and not worry about the age old question of ‘what if’...
I wish this video and social media was available 18 year ago. I might have been doing art for a living.
When you got your job at disney, did you already know how to draw digitally? I would like an animation job but I only know how to draw traditional.
This video is super helpful! Thanks!
no problem! :)
:D thank you so much for responding!
Ha ha ha... *nervous laugh* before I watched this video, I had done nearly all the What Not To Do's. Oh well.
🙂🙂
Animex Animation Studios Thanks!!
how fast do you have to be to work in a pro's environment?
I have the same question.
Do you have a Pinterest?
I will very likely fail in art.
But boy if I get married to someone like would be a great break even.
0:15 thats how mafia works

I am just trying to finding animators on TH-cam, and i came across this 😅😅
