In the early seventies I had to drive a very large wheeled earthmover in convoy with four others from Dartford where we had been working on the new power station on to Bristol where we were going to work on the new Portbury dock. We were escorted right through the centre of London by a similar crew of motorcyclists to the M4 where we had to wait for daylight before proceeding down the motorway with civilian escort vans. Between Dartford and the M4 we didn't stop once, even for traffic lights that we damaged because they were not wide enough to allow us through. This is not allowed now and all oversize machines have to be transported. For the technically minded the machines were four wheeled Caterpillar dumptrucks, 769Bs, that were fourteen feet wide. A normal truck is 9foot 6ins.
Thought I'd get bored after the 1st 5 minutes but it had me riveted till the very end. I was actually leaning round the corners. Thanks for the upload..

One of our drivers saw me and then had a quick chat with SEG. Next minute one of the SEG came up to me and said 4 ways on and keep up. It took me 14 mins to get to Hounslow instead of the normal hour. Drive of my life. Great guys.

Well done. Should be called 'HCEG' Herding Cats Escort Group.
‘They don’t know the route.’ Absolute tosh. They recce the route time & again and have a full briefing pre escort. Every Force in the country has VIP trained drivers & bikes.
Having said that, the 2 working bikes up front do a great job for the convoy. We always used 4 workers & a convoy commander
At 8:40 in this video the IPP was a sitting duck and with no visible exit route. More surprisingly, the SEG were not armed. Now they are and the IPP would have had a chance for survival under their operations of not securing the route.
You forget there was a firearms team in that first convoy. Back then, there would have been at least 1 or 2 armed protection officers in and following the car with the VIP. Still the same now, just with all SEG bikers armed too.
WOW 😎😎😎 I feel very privileged to have watched such a fascinating video 😊😊😊
How can back-seated VIP have any comprehension of traffic congestion in the city if they are just allowed to breeze through.
Great video. Like poetry in motion
Jeremy Dewitte should take notes and learn from these guys....
fantastic documentary.
could you tell me please, what the later bikes SEG use?
many thanks
The SEG used the BMW R1150RS up until 2011 when they changed to Honda VFR 1200 motorcycles.
Currently back to newer BMW 1200RS again (Sport SEs). th-cam.com/video/RjuLtiR-qtQ/w-d-xo.html
